  • Low carbon energy demand in South Korea is increasing, hence leading to an increasing usage of wood pellets and the amount of its combustion by-product called wood pellet fly ash (WA). In an effort to develop recycling technology, this research investigates the use of WA as a new sustainable binder for backfill soil materials. The influence of WA on weathered granite soils (WS) is investigated by mixing 5%, 15%, and 25% of WA dosage, compacted at optimum moisture content, then cured for 3, 7, 14, and 28 days. After curing, the compacted specimens were investigated through unconfined compressive tests, pH tests, total suction tests, and microstructural analysis. The findings suggest that the higher the dosage rate, the higher strength and modulus. Additionally, the alkali ions of WA aid in the cementation of WS particles, and newly cementitious minerals are confirmed after 28 curing days. The refinement of pore microstructures led to a denser WS matrix and stiffness improvements. The results validate the binding potential of wood pellet fly ash on weathered granite soils in terms of strength, modulus, and microstructures.

  • The physical and sensory properties of puffed mulberry-rice snack (PMRS) by pellet with mulberry leaf and brown rice flour were evaluated at different temper moisture contents and at varying puffing temperatures. The mulberry pellets were prepared using a food extruder to extrude the dough made from mulberry leaf powder and brown rice flour. The mulberry pellets were tempered to 14, 16, and 18% moisture content and were puffed at 220, 230, and 240$^{\circ}C$ for 4, 5, and 6 sec. The specific volume and breaking strength of PMRS increased with heating temperature and time; however, the breaking strength decreased as the moisture content increased. The Hunter L value decreased as the heating temperature and time increased, showing an especially large decrease with increased heating time. The a and b values increased with increasing heating temperature and time. These results indicated that PMRS, which has a distinctive flavor and color, could be effectively used as a functional food with the use of a puffing machine and that PMRS shows potential for use as new snack product.

  • In the Korea, 80 percent of livestock manure were converted into compost and used as organic fertilizers. The livestock manure compost has two types of powder and pellet type (ID= 5~10 mm). The aim of this study was to investigate the properties of two types of cow manure compost pellet (cylinder and sphere type). Nitrogen concentrations of cylinder type and sphere type of compost pellets were 1.23 and 1.24%, respectively. There were similar with nitrogen concentration of cylinder and sphere types of compost pellets. As a result of analyzing the effect of granulation processing, it was found that the moisture content of the raw material was the most influential factor in the granulation processing in both of the processing types of the screw pressing method and the rotating cylinder method. When the cylinder and sphere types of compost pellets were dry to 20% of moisture content, the specific gravities of these compost pellets were 1.38 and 1.13, respectively. The compressive strength of cylinder type pellet and sphere type pellet were 27.6 and $11.3kg/cm^2$, respectively.

  • Wood fuel must be dried before combustion to minimize the energy loss. Sawdust of Japanese red pine was dried in a batch type fluidized-bed to investigate the drying characteristics of sawdust as a raw material for bio-fuel. The minimum fluidization air velocity was increased as particle size was increased. It took about 21 minutes and 8 minutes to dry 0.08 m-deep bed of particles with average particle size of 1.3 mm from 100% to 10% moisture content at air temperature of $20^{\circ}C$ and $50^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • In this study, the characteristics of the SRF (Solid Refuse Fuel) prepared by blending each of the additives (citrus peel, waste wood, coal) in the heavy oil fly ash, evaluating the heavy oil fly ash recyclability. Recycling SRFs were fabricated by pellet extruding method after blending the heavy oil fly ash and additives based on 30% moisture content. As a result, the formability of the SRFs was excellent under condition of blending heavy oil fly ash with coal or citrus peel and the highest calorific value was 4,274 kcal/kg at heavy oil fly ash mixed with coal. Therefore, the formability and calorific value were improved when the heavy oil fly ash was mixed with coal(20 wt%) at 30% moisture content. From these results, the applicability of SRFs with additives was confirmed by using the heavy oil fly ash from J thermal power plant.

  • Effects of pelleting, drying, conditioning, and additives on the characteristics of Yukwa (fried pellet) were determined. RVA maximum paste viscosity of Bandegi (waxy rice pellet) was the highest after 2 days of moisture conditioning process, and decreased 2 days later. Air bubbles in Bandegi were distributed uniformly but were not significantly affected by conditioning time. For higher expansion and softer texture of Yukwa, the optimum moisture content of dried and conditioned Bandegi was $14{\sim}17%$. The addition of soymilk and 25% alcohol (Soju) as additives was also effective for achieving higher expansion and soft texture of Yukwa, respectively. Larger air cells were distributed in the center and smaller ones on the edge of Yukwa.

  • In order to evaluate the effects of aging on the ignition performance, pyrotechnic igniters were separated from twelve-year-old, fifteen-year-old, and sixteen-year-old live rocket motors. The characteristic values of the ignition material were measured, and the firing tests of the igniters were performed. The moisture content, the outer dimension, the crush strength, the thermal decomposition characteristics, and the heat of formation the B/$KNO_3$ ignition pellet were measured. The crush strength was increased and the heat of formation was reduced as aged, but no change was detected for other characteristic values. The burning test results of the igniter pellet in the closed bomb and the inert motor showed that the burning rate of the ignition pellet was increased by 10%, and the integration of pressure $P_t$ of the p-t curve was reduced by 15% for aged samples. It was inferred that the burning rate was increased as the crack was appeared in the pellet and $P_t$ could be proportionally decreased with the heat of explosion.

  • morphologically different Larix Kaemferi Carr sawdust. The pellet characteristics included moisture contents satisfied the first grade (less than 10%) of quality standard of wood pellets announced by Korea Forest Research Institute. Densities were also adequate for the first grade (640kg/$m^3$) on the quality standard and there was no large difference in other characteristics of pellets, however, pellets manufactured with planer shavings had the highest density. Ash contents also passed the first grade (less than 0.7) of quality standard. But bark pellet exceeded the second grade (1.5%) in ash content. Lower absorption ratio of bark pellet showed the effect on hygroscpicity. The heating value of the manufactured wood pellets in this study exceeded the first grade of quality standard(more than 4,300 kcal/kg).

  • An 8-week of growth feeding trial was conducted to evaluate effects of the experimental extruded pellet (EP), commercial EP and raw fish-based moist pellet (MP) for growing flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus). Three replicate groups of the fish average weighing 43.5 g were fed four experimental diets (EP1, EP2, EP3 and EP4), four commercial diets (EP5, EP6, EP7 and EP8) and MP. Weight gain of fish fed the EP2, EP3 and EP4 was the highest among treatments, but not significantly different to that of fish fed the EPl, EP7 and MP. Feed efficiency and protein efficiency ratio of fish fed the MP were the lowest among treatments, but daily feed intake and daily protein intake of fish fed the MP were the highest among treatments. Moisture, lipid and ash contents of whole body were affected by diets, but protein content was not affected by diets. It is concluded that the dietary formulations used in the EP2, EP3 and EP4 can be applied in the practical exuded pellet feeds for growing flounder of 42-108g size.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of moisture content and particle size of sawdust on the fuel characteristics of wood pellets produced with Mongolian oak (Quercus mongolica, QUM), red pine (Pinus densiflora, PID) and larch (Larix kaempferi, LAK) sawdust using a flat-die pelletizer. Prior to produce wood pellets, the sawdust was controlled to the moisture content of 8, 11, 12% and was screened to the particle size of 2 and 4 mesh. In the analysis of its chemical composition, QUM had a high ash content, and PID and LAK contained large amount of lignin. In case of the fuel characteristics, PID pellets had the lowest moisture content of pellets (P-MC), and LAR pellets was found to have the highest bilk density (BD) and durability (DU). With the increase of moisture content of sawdust (S-MC), P-MC and DU of QUM, PID and LAK pellets increased, but BD of QUM and LAK pellets decreased. When size of sawdust used for the production of wood pellets decreased, P-MC and BD of LAK pellets and BD of QUM pellets increased. Decrease of particle size contributed to the increase of DU of QUM, PID and LAK pellets. In addition, BD and DU of QUM pellets produced with 12% S-MC sawdust increased as its particle size reduced. For LAK pellets, DU was not influence by particle size in the S-MCs of 10% and 12%, but increased with the decrease of particle size in the S-MC of 8%. Based on the results and economical aspects, 10% MC and 2 mesh paricle size for QUM sawdust and 12% MC and 2 mesh particle size for PID sawdust might be optimal conditions for pellets production, and fuel characteristics of wood pellets produced by the conditions greatly exceeded the minimum requirements for the $1^{st}$-grade wood pellets of the standard designated by Korea Forest Research Institute.
