In this paper, the ventilating and heating system of T-103 trainer aircraft were investigated and redesigned to improve its poor performance. The ventilation system of the trainer was designed to increase the mass flow rate of fresh air by using air intake valves. The flow-in air through the air intake valve is supplied to the cabin by the ram effect of aircraft and the propeller. And the additional heating system was installed to improve the temperature of the cabin inside. The wasted heat from the exhaust gas of the engines was used as heat source of the additional heating system by installing an heat exchanger around the exhaust nozzle. The additional fresh air and the heated air enter the cabin via two ducts mounted under the instrument panel and behind the pedal in the cabin. The additional ventilating and heating system can be controlled by the first pilot and the secondary pilot individually using the control knob equipped separately. After mounting the additional ventilating and heating system, evaluations such as inspection of parts and component, ground run-up test, in-flight test, user test, etc. were conducted. The result of the tests was sufficient to meet the requirements of the manuals, and the pilots were satisfied with the additionally mounted systems.
Smoke emissions from light duty diesel vehicles were measured using light extinction method with the free acceleration test mode. The smoke emissions for each measurement cycle of the free acceleration method showed large variations according to driver's pedal pushing pattern. The smoke values for each measurement cycle initially increased and reach a peak value. Integration of the smoke emissions with time for each measurement cycle was performed to get a representative smoke value which was obtained by averaging the integrated results. Two kinds of integration time range were used. One is range over the whole measurement cycle of the free acceleration method. The other is only the acceleration range in the measurement cycle. Overall, variation of the representative smoke values obtained by the integration method was reduced comparing to the traditional representative smoke value which was obtained from a peak smoke value over the measurement cycle. Ten vehicles of the same model with 2.5 liter diesel engines, and seven vehicles of the same model with 2.7 liter diesel engines, were tested using the free acceleration test method.
As many systems depend on electronics in an intelligent vehicle, concern for fault tolerance is growing rapidly. For example, a car with its braking controlled by electronics and no mechanical linkage from brake pedal to calipers of front tires(brake-by-wire system) should be fault tolerant because a failure can come without any warning and its effect is devastating. In general, fault tolerance is usually designed by placing redundant components that duplicate the functions of the original module. In this way a fault can be isolated, and safe operation is guaranteed by replacing the faulty module with its redundant and normal module within a predefined interval. In order to make in-vehicle network fault tolerant, this paper presents the concept and design methodology of an IEEE 1451 based dual CAN module. In addition, feasibility of the dual CAN network was evaluated by implementing the dual CAN module.
The passenger car drivers want in general to feel good driveability, but they sometimes feel uncomfortable by shock and jerk phenomena when they push or release acceleration pedal with clutch on state. In this paper, the shock and jerk characteristics are studied on the vehicles controlled by the throttle-by-wire system. Experiments and simulations were carried out on two vehicles which show different control characteristics. The engine torque control characteristics was analyzed by measuring cylinder pressure. Various specification factors of the vehicles and the torque control logic of the engines were simulated through experimental data basis. The result shows the spring effect of the trans-axle in the drive-train is one of the most important factors of the shock-jerk phenomena and the engine torque control method is also responsible for the reducing the shock-jerk amplitude. In this paper a new control logic of the engine torque is suggested for the better driveablility on the tip-in/out event.

Cross-shore sediment transport is very important factor in the design of coastal structures, and the beach profile is mainly affected by a number of parameters, such as wave height and period, beach slope, and the material properties of the bed. In this study cross-shore sediment movement was investigated using a physical model and various offshore bar geometric parameters were determined by the resultant erosion profile. The experiments on cross- shore sediment transport carried out in a laboratory wave channel for initial base slopes of 1/8, 1/10 and 1/15. Using the regular waves with different deep-water wave steepness generated by a pedal-type wave generator, the geometrical of sediment transport rate and considerable characteristics of beach profiles under storm conditions and bar parameters affecting on-off shore sediment transport are investigated for the beach materials with the medium diameter of $d_{50}$=0.25, 0.32, 0.45, 0.62 and 0.80 mm. Non-dimensional equations were obtained by using linear and non-linear regression methods through the experimental data and were compared with previously developed equations in the literature. The results have shown that the experimental data fitted well to the proposed equations with respect to the previously developed equations.
A five-year-old, female Great Dane dog with edema, localized trauma, mild pain, and lameness of the right hind limb was referred to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Chungbuk National University. This dog had a history of mammary tumor excisions 6 months ago. Abnormal changes were not seen in the values of complete blood count and serum biochemical tests. But pedal direct lymphangiography using aqueous-based radiographic agent showed the obstructed lymph flow in right popliteal lymph node. Based on these observations, the dog was suspected as lymphedema resulted from lymph drainage flilure without any other possibilities of inflammation or other causes. Although recommended chemotherapy and physiotherapy had been applied for resolvinr presented problems for one month, there was no improvement on edema of damaged region and any other clinical signs. Therefore, the necropsy was performed after euthanasia under agreement of the owner of patient. In histopatholofical examination, the most characteristic lesions in the mass of femoral region were diffuse edema fibrosis and neoplastic cells in the lymphatics. Also, the neoplastic cells were very similar to those found in the tumor mass of mammary gland, which had diagnosed as fibrosing carcinoma. These facts suggested that the cause of obstructed lymph flow was the neoplasia in lymphatics of the right hind limb. With these results, a diagnosis of malignant lymphedema was made in this dog.
This paper presents an optimum tire force distribution method for 6WD/6WS(6-Wheel-Drive and 6-Wheel-Steering) electric vehicles. Using an independent steering and driving system, the performance of 6WD/6WS vehicles can be improved, as, for example, with respect to their maneuverability under low speed and their stability at high speed. Therefore, there should be a control strategy for finding the optimum tire forces that satisfy the driver's command and minimize energy consumption. From the driver's commands (steering angle and accelerator/brake pedal stroke), the desired yaw moment, the desired lateral force, and the desired longitudinal force were obtained. These three values were distributed to each wheel as the torque and the steering angle, based on the optimum tire force distribution method. The optimum tire force distribution method finds the longitudinal/lateral tire forces of each wheel that minimize the cost function, which is the sum of the normalized tire forces. Next, the longitudinal/lateral tire forces of each wheel are converted into the reference torque inputs and the steering wheel angle inputs. The proposed method was tested through a simulation, and its effectiveness was verified.
In this paper, an energy regeneration algorithm is proposed to make the maximum use of the regenerative braking energy for a parallel hybrid electric vehicle(HEV) equipped with a continuous variable transmission(CVT). The regenerative algorithm is developed by considering the battery state of charge(SOC), vehicle velocity and motor capacity. The hydraulic module consists of a reducing valve and a power unit to supply the front wheel brake pressure according to the control algorithm. In order to evaluate the performance of the regenerative braking algorithm and the hydraulic module, a hardware-in-the-loop simulation (HILS) is performed. In the HILS system, the brake system consists of four wheel brakes and the hydraulic module. Dynamic characteristics of the HEV are simulated using an HEV simulator. In the HEV simulator, each element of the HEV powertrain such as internal combustion engine, motor, battery and CVT is modelled using MATLAB/$Simulink^{(R)}$. In the HILS, a driver operates the brake pedal with his or her foot while the vehicle speed is displayed on the monitor in real time. It is found from the HILS that the regenerative braking algorithm and the hydraulic module suggested in this paper provide a satisfactory braking performance in tracking the driving schedule and maintaining the battery state of charge.
Characteristics of smoke emission in light duty diesel vehicles was investigated according to the year of production, engine displacement volume, and mileage. The smoke emission was measured using light extinction smoke measurement method under free acceleration test mode. Total number of the tested vehicles was 180. The year of production of the tested vehicles distributed from 2002 to 2007. The displacement volumes of the tested vehicles were categorized as 2-liter, 2.5-liter, 2.7-liter, and 3-liter. The mileage of the tested vehicles distributed from 20,000 km to 400,000 km. The more recent in the year of production of the tested vehicles did not show clearly lower in smoke emissions. Smoke emission showed different values according to driver's pedal pushing pattern. Also, smoke emission peak for each free acceleration test initially increased and reach a maximum of the peak values. Afterwards, the smoke peak gradually decreased as number of test increased. A new guide line was proposed to determine the smoke value from the light duty diesel vehicles based on smoke emission peak patterns which were obtained with several repeated free acceleration tests.
The passenger car drivers want in general to feel good driveability, but they sometimes feel uncomfortable by shock and jerk phenomenon when they push or release acceleration pedal with clutch engaged. In this paper, the shock and jerk characteristics are studied on the vehicles of the throttle-by-wire system. With this system, the throttle is not directly controlled by drivers but via a microprocessor. So the control logic of the throttle is very important on tip-in and tip-out driveability. Experiments were carried out on two vehicles which show different control characteristics. The torque control logics were analyzed by measuring cylinder pressures. The results show that special torque control logic is needed at tip-in/out state for good driveability.
