Intra-event variability of bacterial composition in stormwater runoff from mixed land use and land cover catchment

  • Microbial community and composition in stormwater runoff from mixed land use land cover (LULC) catchment with ongoing land development was diverse across the hydrological stage due different environmental parameters (hydrometeorological and physicochemical) and source of runoff. However, limited studies have been made for bacterial composition in this catchment. Therefore, this study aims to: (1) quantify the concentration of fecal indicator bacteria (FIB), stormwater quality and bacterial composition and structure according to hydrological stage; and (2) determine their correlation to environmental parameters. The 454 pyrosequencing was used to determine the bacterial community and composition; while Pearson's correlation was used to determine the correlation among parameters-FIB, stormwater quality, bacterial composition and structure-to environmental parameters. Results demonstrated that the initial and peak runoff has the highest concentration of FIB, stormwater quality and bacterial composition and structure. Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria and Firmicutes were dominant bacteria identified in this catchment. Furthermore, the 20 most abundant genera were correlated with runoff duration, average rainfall intensity, runoff volume, runoff flow, temperature, pH, organic matter, nutrients, TSS and turbidity. An increase of FIB and stormwater quality concentration, diversity and richness of bacterial composition and structure in this study was possibly due to leakage from septic tanks, cesspools and latrines; feces of domestic and wild animals; and runoff from forest, destroyed septic system in land development site and urban LULC. Overall, this study will provide an evidence of hydrological stage impacts on the runoff microbiome environment and public health perspective.

새만금 방조제 완공 이전 만경강 하구역 식물플랑크톤 군집의 주기적인 변동 (Cyclic Change of Phytoplankton Community in Mankyeong River Estuary prior to the Completion of the Saemankeum Seawall)

  • Eutrophicated water fed through Mankyeong River and Dongjin River into the new Saemankeum Lakemight seriously affect the water quality and phytoplankton community in the lake. To obtain control reference data for the later studies on environmental changes due to the construction of the Saemankeum Sea Wall, we performed a monthly investigation on the physico-chemical properties of the water and phytoplankton community at 3 stations in the Mankyeong River Estuary over 14 months starting from September 1999. Water temperature ranged from $0.3{\sim}32.9^{\circ}C$ due to the typical seasonal variations in temperate on the coasts and salinity exhibited a wide annual range of $0.2{\sim}33.7$ psu along with regular and huge hourly variations according to tidal cycles. Inorganic nutrients were supplied from rivers to the monitoring station and the whole lake. The average concentration of total-N, $6.99\;mg{\cdot}l^{-1}$, was higher than the water quality for agricultural use with peak values occurring in winter. Species composition showed a seasonal succession pattern, where a high diversity was observedin summer and autumn and vice versa in winter. Hourly variations of water properties in the "Mankyeong bridge" Station were quite regular and well in accordance with the daily tidal cycles. The different degree of sea water intrusion during the flood tide at each of the 3 stations exhibited a different range and variation pattern of water temperature and salinity throughout a day. Hourly changes in species composition were in harmony with the daily tidal cycles, resulting in extremely variable spatio-temporal variation.

Transformation of dissolved organic matter in a constructed wetland: A molecular-level composition analysis using pyrolysis-gas chromatography mass spectrometry

  • This study investigated the transformation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in a free-water surface flow constructed wetland. Pyrolysis gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) coupled with preparative high-performance liquid chromatography (prep-HPLC) was used to analyze the compositions of biopolymers (polysaccharides, amino sugars, proteins, polyhydroxy aromatics, lipids and lignin) in DOM according to the molecular size at three sampling points of the water flow: inflow, midflow, and outflow. The prep-HPLC results verified the decomposition of DOM through the decrease in the number of peaks from three to one in the chromatograms of the sampling points. The Py-GC/MS results for the degradable peaks indicated that biopolymers relating to polysaccharides and proteins gradually biodegraded with the water flow. On the other hand, the recalcitrant organic fraction (the remaining peak) in the outflow showed a relatively high concentration of aromatic compounds. Therefore, the ecological processes in the constructed wetland caused DOM to become more aromatic and homogeneous. This indicated that the constructed wetland can be an effective buffer area for releasing biochemically stable DOM, which has less influence on biological water quality indicators, e.g., biochemical oxygen demand, into an aquatic ecosystem.

HSPF 모형을 이용한 안양천 유역의 물순환 및 BOD 부하량 분석 (Analysis of Hydrologic Cycle and BOD Loads Using HSPF in the Anyancheon Watershed)

  • 본 연구에서는 안양천 유역에 대해 HSPF 모형을 구축하고 중유역과 전체유역의 물순환 현황 및 BOD 부하량을 정량적으로 파악하였다. 모형을 구축하기 위해 HSPF모형의 수량 및 BOD 농도에 대한 민감도 분석을 수행하여 매개변수를 선택하였다. 또한 다양한 특성을 갖고 있는 안양천 유역을 토지이용, 경사도 및 사용한 기상자료 등에 따라 4개 지역으로 구분하여 검 보정을 실시하여 정확도를 향상시켰다. 물순환 모의 결과 하류로 갈수록 도시화 비율이 높으며 이로 인해 기저유출량은 11.1 % $\rightarrow$ 5.0 %로 줄어들고 직접유출량은 42.5 % $\rightarrow$ 56.9 %로, BOD 농도는 3.3 mg/L $\rightarrow$ 15.0 mg/L로, 단위면적당 원단위는 55.4 kg/ha/year $\rightarrow$ 354.5 kg/ha/year로 늘어났다.

산림특성에 따른 강우유출수 유출특성 및 상관관계 분석 (Characteristics of Storm Runoff and Analysis of Its Correlation with Forest Properties)

  • Environmental policy implementation has been strengthened to protect the source waters in Korea and to improve their water quality. Increasing of non-point source caused water quality problem continuously. Research on runoff from forests, which occupy over 65% of the land in korea, is insufficient, and studies on the characteristics and influences of storm runoff are necessary. In this study, we chose to compare the effects of land use in the form of two types of forest distribution and then gathered data on storm characteristics and runoff properties during rainfall events in these areas. Furthermore, the significance and influences of the discharges were analyzed through correlation analysis, and multilateral runoff characteristics were examined by deducing a formula through $COD_{Mn}$ and TOC regression analysis. At two forest points, for which the basin areas differed from each other, flow changed according to storm quantity and intensity. The peak discharge at point A, where the basin area was big, was high, whereas water-quality fundamental items (BOD, $COD_{Mn}$, and SS) and TOC density were high at point B where the slope and storm intensity were high. Effects of dissolved organic matter were determined through correlation analysis, and the regression formulas for $COD_{Mn}$ and TOC were deduced by regression analysis. It is expected that the data from this study could be useful as basic information in establishing forest management measures.

강우시 도시지역 강우 유출수 오염부하 기원평가 (Evaluating pollution origins of runoff in urban area by stormwater)

  • 홍제천 유역의 평창 배수분구를 대상으로 강우시 발생하수의 특성을 파악하기 위해 유량 및 수질 조사를 수행하였고, 강우유출수를 기저하수, 강우, 지붕유출수, 도로유출수, 관내 퇴적물 등 오염원별로 분석하여 기원별 초염기여도를 파악하였다. 강우시 발생초기의 오염물질의 농도는 초기세척현상에 의해 비강우시 농도의 3-10배 이상 높게 나타났으나, 강우 후반기에는 희석에 의해 비강우시 평균 농도 보다 오히려 낮은 농도를 보이는 것으로 나타났다. 오염부하의 오염원별 기여도 분석에서 관거 퇴적물에 의한 오염도가 전체 오염도에서 COD의 경우 54.6%를, SS은 73.3%를 차지하여, 가장 높은 기여도를 보여 관거 내 퇴적물의 준설과 세정을 통하여 상당량의 오염부하를 저감시킬 수 있는 것으로 나타났다.

북한강 수계 대규모 탁수사상 발생에 의한 댐 저수지의 탁수 영향 분석 (Analyzing the Effect of an Extreme Turbidity Flow Event on the Dam Reservoirs in North Han River Basin)

  • A long-term resuspension of small particles, called persistent turbidity, is one of the most important water quality concerns in the dam reservoirs system located in North Han River. Persistent turbidity may incur aesthetic nuisance and harmful effect on the ecosystem health, in addition to elevated water treatment costs for the drinking water supply to the Seoul metropolitan area. These sufferings have been more intensified as the strength and frequency of rainfall events increase by climate change in the basin. This study was to analyze the effect of an extreme turbidity flow event that occurred in 2006 on the serial reservoirs system (Soyang-Uiam-Cheongpyung-Paldang) in North Han River. The CE-QUAL-W2 model was set up and calibrated for the river and reservoirs system using the field data obtained in 2006 and 2007. The results showed that Soyang Reservoir released turbid water, which was classified as the TSS concentration is greater than 25 mg/L, for 334 days with peak TSS of 264.1 mg/L after the extreme flood event (592.7 mm) occurred between July 10 and 18 of 2006. The turbid water departed from Soyang Reservoir reached at the most downstream Paldang Reservoir after about 20 days and sustained for 41 days, which was validated with water treatment plant data. Since the released water from Soyang Reservoir had low water temperature and high TSS, an underflow formed in the downstream reservoirs and vertically mixed at Paldang Reservoir due to dilution by the sufficient inflow from South Han River.

고랭지 밭 유역에서 융설과 강우유출로 발생하는 비점오염원의 특성 비교 (Comparison of NPS Pollution Characteristics between Snowmelt and Rainfall Runoff from a Highland Agricultural Watershed)

  • Runoff, NPS pollution load and flow-weighted mean concentration (FWMC) occurred by snowmelt and rainfall runoff were compared by a variance analysis. Snowmelt runoff ranged between 1,449 and $19,921m^3$. The peak snowmelt runoff was similar to the runoff that occurred by about 40mm/day rainfall. And average snowmelt runoff was not significantly different from the runoff that occurred by 25.5 mm/day rainfall. Average values of SS loads and FWMCs were 5,438 kg/day and 954.9 mg/L, respectively. SS loads and FWMCs were in the similar range with those that occurred by 39.0 mm/day and 53.0 mm/day rainfall, respectively. Daily SS and COD loads and FWMCs occurred by snowmelt and rainfall were analyzed not to be significantly different. Overall assessment led that the NPS pollution loads by snowmelt runoff had a similar characteristics with the loads by about 40 mm/day rainfall runoff. It was recommended that the agricultural fields in snowy region needs to managed not only for rainfall runoff but also snowmelt runoff for an effective water quality management.

한산거제만 해역의 수질 장기변동 특성 (The Characteristic of Long Term Variation of the Water Quality from Hansan-Geoje bay, Korea)

  • 한산거제만 해역의 장기수질 특성을 알기 위해 1987년부터 2010년까지 만내 2개 정점에 대한 표 저층 수질에 대한 장기관측 자료를 분석하였다. 한산거제만 해역의 수질 영양수준은 중영양(Mesotrophic) 단계이고, 영양염은 대체로 하계인 8월부터 꾸준히 증가하여 갈수기인 11월에 최대 농도를 보인 후, 동계를 지나 이듬해의 춘계인 5월에 최저 농도가 되는 계절적 변동 특성을 보였다. 요인분석 결과 한산거제만은 영양염, 계절, 담수유입, 오염 및 내부생산 등의 5개 요인이 해역 수질 특성의 76.82%를 설명할 수 있는 것으로 나타났다. 시계열분석 결과 수온, DO 및 저층 DIP는 증가, pH 및 COD는 감소하는 경향을 보였다. 특히 N/P비를 기준으로 DIN의 변동 추세는 1990년대를 전 후하여 과잉에서 부족으로 전환되었다. 또한 한산거제만은 전형적인 폐쇄성 내만이며 대규모 양식이 이루어지고 있음에도 1987년 이후 DIP를 제외하곤 수질이 대체로 개선되고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 한산거제만 해역의 지속적 이용과 보존을 위해서는 DIP 증가 또는 축적의 원인 파악이 필요하며, 이를 위해 한산거제만의 주요 양식생물과 환경과의 상호관계 등에 대한 연구가 필요하다.

고성만 수질의 장기변동 특성 (Characteristic of Long Term Variation of the Water Quality at the Waters of Goseong bay)

  • 고성만 해역의 수질 특성 및 정체성을 알기 위해 1987년~2009년간의 만내 1개 정점에 대한 표.저층 수질에 대한 장기관측 자료를 분석하였다. 그 결과 고성만 해역의 수질은 chlorophyll-a, DIP, DIN을 기준으로 중영양(Mesotrophic) 단계이고, 화학적산소요구량(COD) 기준으로 해역등급 2등급으로 볼 수 있어, 고성만은 만내에 유입된 물질수지의 확산이 비교적 더딘 폐쇄성 내만임에도 불구하고 수질은 비교적 양호한 것으로 판단된다. 조사기간 전 기간에 걸친 수질성분에 대해 이동평균 시계열분석, 상관분석 및 회귀분석한 결과 고성만 해역은 시간의 경과에 따라 용존무기인(DIP)은 축적되고, 용존무기질소(DIN)는 감소하는 추세를 보였다. 또한 고성만 해역의 식물성플랑크톤 성장의 제한인자는 용존무기질소(DIN)이고, chlrophyll-a의 농도는 8월의 $4.60{\mu}g/L$로 가장 높았다. 계절 평균 및 계절지수는 11월이 가장 높아 고성만의 영양염 수지는 담수 등에 의한 외부유입보다 만의 내부 즉 수산생물의 대량 양식 및 저층 퇴적물에서의 용출 등이 더 큰 요인으로 작용하는 특징을 보였다. 따라서 고성만 해역의 수질 또는 해역 관리를 위해서는 목적에 따라 동 해역의 용존무기인(DIP), 용존무기질소(DIN) 등의 영양염 수지에 대한 고려가 필요한 것으로 보여진다.
