  • This paper proposes a numerical methodology for capturing the complete curve of a pressuremeter test including initial or disturbed parts and loops through a stiffness-based approach adopted in three dimensional finite difference code, FLAC3D. In order to enable this, a new hyperbolic model was used to replace the conventional linear elastic model prior to peak strength of Mohr-Coulomb soil model and update or degradation of shear modulus was considered. Presented modeling approach and implemented constitutive model are impressively successful. It leads to obtain the whole set of parameters for characterizing sands and seems promising for modeling the most of geotechnical structures.

  • In this study, the behavior of R/C beam strengthened with carbon fiber laminate(C.F.L) is analyzed from the test results. Test parameters are the width, the thickness and the length of C.F.L. and method of construction. The failure mode and ultimate load are analyzed from these measured data. Test results shows that the peak moment of specimens strengthened with C.F.L is increased to 1.43~1.90 times of that of non-rehabilitation specimen. The wider lap width, larger amount of rehabilitation materials, the larger strength is obtained.

  • The acoustic emission(AE) signal from concrete cylinder specimen during failure process under cycling compressive loads were recorded and analyzed. Different filters were set on the AE signal duration based on the characteristic of amplitude distribution. From the value of AE signal amplitude, which corresponds to the occurrence of the peak for AE hits, the AE signals from concrete compressive specimen were divided into five sections. The relationship between the AE signal section and the failure mechanism of these materials, analyzed on the meso-structure level was determined. Based on the experiments, the AE characteristics of each failure mechanism are given. The results show that the AE technique is a valuable tool to study the failure mechanism of concrete.

  • The biodegradability of polylactic acid(PLA) fabrics was evaluated by two methods: enzyme and soil degradation. Three different enzymes were selected to evaluate. Degradation times were measured at optimal enzyme treatment conditions. Biodegradation by enzymatic hydrolysis was compared with soil degradation. As a result, biodegradation created cracks on the fiber surface, which led to fiber thickening and shortening. In addition, new peak was observed at $18.5^{\circ}$ by degradation. Moreover, cracks indicating biofragmentation were confirmed by enzyme and soil degradation. By enzyme and soil degradation, the weight loss of PLA fabrics was occurred, there through, the tensile strength decreased about 25% by enzyme hydrolysis when 21 days after, and 21.67% by soil degradation when 60 days after. Furthermore, the biodegradability of PLA fabrics by enzymatic and soil degradation was investigated and enzymatic degradation was found to be superior to soil degradation of PLA fabrics. Among the three enzymes evaluated for enzymatic degradation, alcalase was the most efficient enzymes. This study established the mechanism of biodegradation of PLA nonwovens, which might prove useful in the textile industry.

  • Firstly, FEM model for the body frame of a fuel cell vehicle was built up and design optimization results based on different schemes were exhibited. One scheme was to minimize weight while maintaining the normal mode frequencies and the other was to increase the frequencies without weight change. Next, for a rear frame model, shape parameter study on collapse characteristics such as peak resistance load and absorbed energy was carried out. Also, the stiffness of frame mounting brackets was predicted using inertance calculation and the durability of those mounting brackets for vehicle system loads was evaluated. Finally, for a representative mounting model, the influence on durability due to thickness change was analyzed.

  • The effects of acute ethanol on the high K+ induced $Ca^{2+}}$ signals were examined from primary cultures of cerebellar granule neurons. $Ca^{2+}}$ signals were measured with Calcium Green-1 based microscopic video imaging. Because $Ca^{2+}}$ signal was low in most of granule neurons without stimuli, high KCI was used for depolarization. In most case, acute exposure to ethanol reduced the peak amplitude of the $Ca^{2+}}$ signals, induced by high K+, even though low concentration of ethanol(2~10mM) was used and the effects lasted more than 30min. In was also possible to see differences of ethanol inhibition, i.e. the temporal pattern of $Ca^{2+}}$ signal reductions and the strength of inhibition of $Ca^{2+}}$ signals in cerebellar granule neurons. These results indicate that low concentration of ethanol has diverse actions on the $Ca^{2+}}$ signals in cerebellar granule neurons.

  • The purpose of this study to compare the muscle performances (peak torque (PT), relative strength (RS), average power (AP), and total work (TW)) between taping group and non-taping group after 1 hour extensive exercise. Twenty healthy male subjects were evaluated in this study. Each subject was divided with taping(n=10) and non-taping group (n=10) randomly. Muscle performances were measured at 60 degree/sec and 180 degree/sec on the Cybex 770. The PT, RS, AP, and TW were measured before and after 1 hour extensive exercise. The results showed that taping group demonstrated significantly higher PT, RS, AP, and TW during ankle dorsiflexion and plantar flexion at 60 degree/sec than those of non-taping group, except for total work during ankle plantar flexion. At the 180 degree/sec, PT and RS was significantly higher during ankle dorsiflexion and plantar flexion in taping group than in non-taping group. This results suggest that lower leg taping could be useful to maintain muscle performances during sport activities.

  • Engine Noise is composed of the mechanical and combustion noise. The contribution of combustion noise is generally bigger than the contribution of the mechanical noise at idle condition in DI diesel engine. That noise usually makes a roughness problem at the fundamental engine order. It is difficult to remove the modulation frequency so we have to directly reduce the combustion noise. The key effect of combustion noise reducing solution is the modification of the combustion pressure profile. It is accomplished by the multiple injection method and we solved the 400Hz combustion noise and improved the sound quality at idle condition in DI diesel engine.

• The purpose of this study is to investigate nonlinear behavior and estimate ultimate resistance of the wall structure against seismic loading. Experimental data for RC coupling elements are used for specifying the strength deterioration and stiffness degradation factor of hysteretic model. Modified coupling element models are used in the push over analysis and time history analysis. In the time history analysis, three earthquake waves are used in the analysis and their peak ground accelerations are changed to be 0.2g. The conclusions of this study are as follows : (1) In the push over analysis, yielding of coupling elements occurred at lower story with small story drift ratio as 0.3%. (2) In the time history analysis, the story drift ratio is sufficient for the requirement of Korean Code, But coupling elements at most stories of the buildings occurred yielding. i. e. the earthquake resistant capacity of shear wall structures is not sufficient at 0.2g.
