Examining Incentives to License Technology in U.S. High-Tech Industries

  • This paper empirically investigates potential factors that might affect firms' incentives to license out technology. The analysis is done with the help of a panel data set of observed licensing transactions involving U.S. public companies in high-technology industries. The important explanatory factors relate to the firm characteristics such as the company's stock of technological knowledge (patent stock). prior involvement in technology licensing. the company size, R&D intensity and capital expenditure. The results suggest that there seems to be significant inter-sectoral differences as well as similarities in determinants of the propensity to transfer technology through licensing agreements.

  • This paper presents a dynamic analysis of the interaction between incumbent firms and successful new entrepreneurs, that can provide R&D incentives when innovations are cumulative/sequential. It is argued that the insights of the basic model extend to varying market structures and regulatory environments.

  • This paper analyzed technologies related to video and sound device manufacturing closely related to media images, divided applicants into companies, research institutes, universities, individuals and the public, and conducted technical statistical analysis, collective intelligence analysis, and open innovation analysis. It is necessary to express innovative ideas through technology in research institutes or universities, and efforts are needed to expand technologies in the media field in universities. Looking at the contents of patents actually filed, patents filed by companies or individuals were mostly related to media technology, and patents filed by universities and research institutes were mostly related to media content. This means that hardware technology patents should be developed extensively and in-depth in an inseparable relationship between media technology and content, and should be a driving force for software content to play a more diverse and creative role.

  • Since the 2000s, to start inducement of SCR(Selective Catalytic Reduction) denitrification facility by large scale companies which are emitted large amount of nitrogen oxides such as power plants, combined heat and power plant, incinerators and chemical plants due to take effect the regulation of stationary sources of nitrogen oxide(NOx), and the total amount of discharged pollutants, such as regulatory gradually emissions regulations are being strengthened and the expanded coverage due to the use of SCR denitrification catalyst is a growing trend. Since 2010 due to the new catalysts to replace the already installed power plants and incinerators due to inactive, and catalytic denitrification SCR waste catalyst waste as a resource rather than the development of technologies for recycling situation is urgently needed. In this study, analyzed paper and patent for recycling technologies of waste catalyst. The range of search was limited in the open patents of USA (US), European Union (EP), Japan (JP), Korea (KR) and SCI journals from 1975 to 2012. Patents and journals were collected using key-words searching and filtered by filtering criteria. The trends of the patents and journals was analyzed by the years, countries, companies, and technologies.

  • Since the 1990s, the rapid development of information and communication industry, the demand for semiconductor and LCD continues to increase. Therefore in the formation of fine circuit patterns, which are the cores of sensitizer and the most expensive thinner and stripper liquor used to remove photoresist and its dilution, the amount in demand are dramatically increasing, emerging need for recycling of waste thinner and stripper liquor. Recently, recycling technologies of stripping process waste solution has been widely studied by economic aspects and environmental aspects, in terms of efficiency of the stripping process. In this study, analyzed paper and patent for recycling technologies of waste solution from stripping process. The range of search was limited in the open patents of USA (US), European Union (EP), Japan (JP), Korea (KR) and SCI journals from 1981 to 2010. Patents and journals were collected using key-words searching and filtered by filtering criteria.   • The rapid demand for electric vehicles and energy storage systems has increased interest in energy storage devices worldwide. New technological alternatives are needed to reliably supply energy storage mineral resources such as lithium and vanadium, which are key materials for energy storage devices. Already, research and development activities are taking place in various countries on technologies that can directly secure lithium and vanadium. Accordingly, it is very important to analyze each country's technological trends through patent and paper analysis to establish effective research and development strategies and to set future technological development directions. This study analyzed trends in the development of new technologies and the current status of research and development at home and abroad through patent data from Korea, the United States, Europe, and Japan that were disclosed or registered from 1970 to October 2019, and the data searched for papers from January 2000 to October 2019. According to the analysis, the current growth stage of the technology related to energy storage minerals is in the beginning stage. Therefore, it is believed that a strategy to rapidly upgrade technology by combining the development of new technologies and demonstration of developed technologies is needed in order to lead the technology market and strengthen the competitiveness of technologies.

Analysis of Generative AI Technology Trends Based on Patent Data (특허 데이터 기반 생성형 AI 기술 동향 분석)

  • This paper analyzes the trends in generative AI technology based on patent application documents. To achieve this, we selected 5,433 generative AI-related patents filed in South Korea, the United States, and Europe from 2003 to 2023, and analyzed the data by country, technology category, year, and applicant, presenting it visually to find insights and understand the flow of technology. The analysis shows that patents in the image category account for 36.9%, the largest share, with a continuous increase in filings, while filings in the text/document and music/speech categories have either decreased or remained stable since 2019. Although the company with the highest number of filings is a South Korean company, four out of the top five filers are U.S. companies, and all companies have filed the majority of their patents in the U.S., indicating that generative AI is growing and competing centered around the U.S. market. The findings of this paper are expected to be useful for future research and development in generative AI, as well as for formulating strategies for acquiring intellectual property.

  • An analysis of the railroad industry for R&D investments has been insufficient whereas there are lots of analysis of accumulation of technology, economic performances and ripple effects for macroscopic view and other industry of R&D investments. This study decided intellectual rights, patent, and paper as common indicators of scientific and technological performances for setting up performance targets through surveying and analysis of preceding study and verified a appropriateness of scientific and technological performances for railroad R&D 11 projects which were successfully finished. Preceding study has been set up performance targets by research investments as input, but this study made a performance target by model through a cross-sectional and residual analysis of performances of railroad R&D 11 Projects in applying research investments, capital investments, inner labor cost and inner labor cost per man and research time as inputs, and verified a validity and a empirical analysis through analysis of other project.

  • Today, MMS (Mobile Mapping System) uses the strengths of individual sensor technologies on a variety of platforms to increase the efficiency of geospatial data collection. In this paper, we analyzed the market size and technology trend of mobile mapping market in Korea and abroad, and analyzed frequency, trend, and characteristics of MMS related patents. The results of the analysis are as follows: First, it is expected that the domestic and overseas mobile mapping market will continue to grow in the future, and MMS-related technologies and applications are rapidly developing. Active research and development investment is required to preoccupy future market through technology development and patent competition. Second, the frequency of filing domestic patents is highly correlated with the results of national R&D, and industrial patent applications are highly related to national projects. It is analyzed as the result of introduction of preemptive technologies and research and development of companies for preemption in related industry rather than market development. Lastly, in Korean geospatial information industry survey, It is necessary to maintain the data so that it can be compared with the data of foreign institutions. In particular, statistical data that can grasp the market size in terms of geospatial information utilization and technical aspects are desperately needed.

  • Among the next generation memory, MRAM (Magnetic Random Access Memory) is worthy of notice for substituting the preexisting memory thanks to its non-volatile property and other advantages. Recently perpendicular MRAM and spin transfer torque MRAM techniques are under active investigation to realize a high density and low power consumption. As a result, there are increasing of patents applications for high density, low current density for magnetization switching and high thermal stability. In this paper, we analyze the trend of patent applications and registrations about MRAM and propose a direction of future investigation.
