The conventional method of structural seismic design was based on increasing structural capacity, which usually didn't reduce earthquake seismic effects. By changing the philosophy of structure design, technologies such as passive seismic control have been used in structures. So far, a large number of seismic isolation systems have been introduced to dissipate earthquake energy that is applied to a structure. These systems act against earthquakes rather than increasing the strength and capacity of the structure. In the present paper, a suspended column called a "pendulum column" is investigated, and a new idea has been considered to improve the performance of the pendulum column isolator by changing the gravity effect by adding a spring under the isolator system. The behavior of the studied isolator system has been researched. Then the isolator system was investigated under different earthquakes and compared with a common pendulum column isolator. The results show that changing the gravity effect has an effective role in the response of the system by reducing the system stiffness. Equations for the system showed that even in a special state, complete isolation is possible. Finally, the tested model verified the theory.

The objective of this study is to establish the fundamental design data for axial load-displacement relationship under axial monotonic or cyclic responses of seismic damping·isolation (SDI) units developed for ceiling structures. The main parameters include the installation of a spring, the number of rubber layer, prestress stress of bolts for connector between the spring and rubbers, and loading type. Test results showed that SDI units with a spring in the core and higher prestress stress of bolts tended to be higher stiffness at the ascending branch and more ductile behavior at the descending branch. This trends more notable for the specimens under monotonic load rather than cyclic loads. Consequently, the energy dissipation of SDI unit can be optimally designed with the following conditions: installation of a spring within 3-layer rubbers and prestress applied to the bolts at 10% of their yielding strength . When compared with the experimental tension capacity of the developed SDI units, the predictions by JIS B 2704-1 and KDS 31 00 are conservative under monotonic loading but higher by approximately 10% under cyclic loading.

To improve performance of the main landing gear for helicopters, a semi-active control landing gear is introduced in this paper. An MR damper based on commercial finite element electromagnetic field analysis of an electromagnet has been adapted the shock absorber. Force control algorithm (which maintains constantly the sum of air spring force and damping force as internal forces) which keep the sum of air spring force and damping force constant during landing, has been used for the controller, applied to control the semi-active landing gear. A series of drop simulations using ADAMS has been done with the passive, sky-hook control type, and force control type landing gears. The result of each simulation has been compared to evaluate the landing performance of the proposed force control type landing gear.

Most countries in the world are trying to reduce the use of fossil fuels in the production of electricity and replace them with renewable energy technologies. In Korea, there are abundant ocean renewable energy sources that will play an important role in power generation in the future. This paper introduces a new tidal energy converter utilizing flow induced vibration (FIV), which can work efficiently, even in the currents slower than 1.0m/s. All tests were conducted at the Marine Renewable Energy Laboratory at the University of Michigan to examine the effects of the damping ratio of the electric generators on the power outputs and power efficiencies. In these tests, two identical circular cylinders were used, and passive turbulence controllers were applied to the surface of the cylinders to enhance the FIV. The experimental results showed that by using the two cylinders in the FIV, the power output and efficiency reached up to 31 W and 36%, respectively. In particular, the results showed that the power efficiency was higher at the relatively low flow speed (4
The passive energy dissipation technology has been proven to be reliable and robust for recent practical applications. Various dampers or energy dissipation devices have been widely used in building structures for enhancing their performances during earthquakes, windstorm and other severe loading scenarios. This paper presents a simplified seismic design procedure for retrofitting earthquake-damaged frames with viscous dampers. With the scheme of designing the main frame and the supplemental viscous dampers respectively, the seismic analysis model of damped structure with viscous dampers and braces was studied. The specific analysis process was described and approach to parameter design of energy dissipation components was also proposed. The expected damping forces for damped frame were first obtained based on storey shear forces; and then they were optimized to meet different storey drift requirements. A retrofit project of a RC frame school building damaged in the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake was introduced as a case study. This building was retrofitted by using viscous dampers designed through the simplified design procedure proposed in this paper. Based on the case study, it is concluded that this simplified design procedure can be effectively used to make seismic retrofit design of earthquake-damaged RC frames with viscous dampers, so as to achieve structural performance objectives under different earthquake risk levels.

The geometric nonlinearity of off-diagonal bracing system (ODBS) could be a complementary system to covering and extending the nonlinearity of reinforced concrete material. Finite element modeling is performed for flexural frame, x-braced frame and the ODBS braced frame system at the initial phase. Then the different models are investigated along various analyses. According to the experimental results of flexural and x-braced frame, the verification is done. Analytical assessments are performed in according to three dimensional finite element modeling. Nonlinear static analysis is considered to obtain performance level and seismic behaviour, and then the response modification factors calculated from each model's pushover curve. In the next phase, the evaluation of cracks observed in the finite element models, especially for RC members of all three systems is performed. The finite element assessment is performed on engendered cracks in ODBS braced frame for various time steps. The nonlinear dynamic time history analysis accomplished in different stories models for three records of Elcentro, Naghan and Tabas earthquake accelerograms. Dynamic analysis is performed after scaling accelerogram on each type of flexural frame, x-braced frame and ODBS braced frame one by one. The base-point on RC frame is considered to investigate proportional displacement under each record. Hysteresis curves are assessed along continuing this study. The equivalent viscous damping for ODBS system is estimated in according to references. Results in each section show the ODBS system has an acceptable seismic behaviour and their conclusions have been converged when the ODBS system is utilized in reinforced concrete frame.
Based on the ball-screw mechanism, a tuned viscous mass damper (TVMD) has been proposed, which has functions of amplifying physical mass of the system and frequency tuning. Considering the sensitivity of a single TVMD's effectiveness to frequency mistuning like that of the conventional tuned mass damper (TMD) and according to the concept of the conventional multiple tuned mass damper (MTMD), in the present paper, multiple tuned mass viscous dampers (MTVMD) consisting of many tuned mass dampers (TVMD) with a uniform distribution of natural frequencies are considered for attenuating undesirable vibration of a structure. The MTVMD is manufactured by keeping the stiffness and damping constant and varying the mass associated with the lead of the ball-screw type inerter element in the damper. The structure is represented by its mode-generalized system in a specific vibration mode controlled using the mode reduced-order method. Modal properties and fundamental characteristics of the MTVMD-structure system are investigated analytically with the parameters, i.e., the frequency band, the average damping ratio, the tuning frequency ratio, the total number of TVMD and the total mass ratio. It is found that there exists an optimum set of the parameters that makes the frequency response curve of the structure flattened with smaller amplitudes in a wider input frequency range. The effectiveness and robustness of the MTVMD are also discussed in comparison with those of the usual single TVMD (STVMD) and the results shows that the MTVMD is more effective and robust with the same level of total mass.
This paper presents and compares a one-dimensional (1D) bending theory for piezoelectric thin beam-type structures with resistive-inductive electrodes to ANSYS$^{(R)}$ three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) analysis. In particular, the lateral deflections and vibrations of slender piezoelectric beams are considered. The peculiarity of the piezoelectric beam model is the modeling of electrodes in such a manner that is does not fulfill the equipotential area condition. The case of ideal, perfectly conductive electrodes is a special case of our 1D model. Two-coupled partial differential equations are obtained for the lateral deflection and for the voltage distribution along the electrodes: the first one is an extended Bernoulli-Euler beam equation (second-order in time, forth order in space) and the second one the so-called Telegrapher's equation (second-order in time and space). Analytical results of our theory are validated by 3D electromechanically coupled FE simulations with ANSYS$^{(R)}$. A clamped-hinged beam is considered with various types of electrodes for the piezoelectric layers, which can be either resistive and/or inductive. A natural frequency analysis as well as quasi-static and dynamic simulations are performed. A good agreement between the extended beam theory and the FE results is found. Finally, the practical relevance of this type of electrodes is shown. It is found that the damping capability of properly tuned resistive or resistive-inductive electrodes exceeds the damping performance of beams, where the electrodes are simply linked to an optimized impedance.
This paper presents a multi-functional system, consisting of a magnetorheological (MR) damper and an electromagnetic induction (EMI) device, and its applications in stay cables. The proposed system is capable of offering multiple functions: (1) mitigating excessive vibrations of cables, (2) estimating cable tension, and (3) harvesting energy for wireless sensors used health monitoring of cable-stayed bridges. In the proposed system, the EMI device, consisting of permanent magnets and a solenoid coil, can converts vibration energy into electrical energy (i.e., induced emf); hence, it acts as an energy harvesting system. Moreover, the cable tension can be estimated by using the emf signals obtained from the EMI device. In addition, the MR damper, whose damping property is controlled by the harvested energy from the EMI device, can effectively reduce excessive cable vibrations. In this study, the multi-functionality of the proposed system is experimentally evaluated by conducting a shaking table test as well as a full-scale stay cable in a laboratory setting. In the shaking table experiment, the energy harvesting capability of the EMI device for wireless sensor nodes is investigated. The performance on the cable tension estimation and the vibration mitigation are evaluated using the full-scale cable test setup. The test results show that the proposed system can sufficiently generate and store the electricity for operating a wireless sensor node twice per day, significantly alleviate vibration of a stay cable (by providing about 20% larger damping compared to the passive optimal case), and estimate the cable tension accurately within a 2.5% error.

Rain-wind induced cable vibration can cause the damages in the cable-stayed bridge due to very little inherent damping characteristics and low fundamental frequency. External Dampers attached to stay cables near anchorages have been shown to be effective means at short stay-cables. However, installation locations of external dampers are limited to a particular range due to aesthetic and practical reasons for very long stay-cables. A recent study by the authors showed that the stay-cable vibration system can perform better than the optimal passive viscous damper, thereby demonstrating its applicability in large cable-stayed bridges. This paper extends the previous study on the taut string representation of the cable by adding cable sag and inclination. The response of the proposed system compared to those of the cable with and without an external damper, and the movable anchorage system provides very effective mitigation of cable vibration. Cable damping ratio is seen to be remarkably reduced by movable anchorage system for a wide range of cable sag. This result shows that the sag effects of the proposed system should be considered.
