  • This study investigated characteristics of children's coping behaviors in the context of perceived controllability of stress in hassles with parent(s), friend-alienation, friend-conflict, and in learning situations. The subjects were 489 sixth grade children selected from seven elementary schools in Seoul. Statistical analysis was by ANOVA, Scheffe' test, and MANOVA. Major findings were that (1) Active, passive, aggressive, and avoidant coping differed by perceived controllability of stress in all 4 stress situations. The children who perceived a higher level of controllability were more active, and less passive, aggressive, and avoidant in coping with each hassle. (2) Perceived controllability was higher in learning related than in friend-conflict situations. Active, passive, and social support seeking coping behavior was higher in learning related stress situations than in friend-conflict situations. Avoidant coping behavior was lower in learning related than in friend-conflict situations.

  • In recent, the concept of system-on-package (SOP) for highly integrated multifunctional systems has been paid attention to for the miniaturization and high frequency of electronic devices. In order to realize SOP, co-integration of passive devices, such as capacitors, resistors and inductors, and active devices should be achieved. If ceramic thick films can be grown at room temperature, we expect to be able to overcome many problems in conventional fabrication processes. So, we focused on the aerosol deposition method (ADM) as room temperature fabrication technology. ADM is a novel ceramic coating method based on the Room Temperature Impact Consolidation (RTIC) phenomena. This method has a wide range potential for fabrication of co-integration of passive and active devices. In this paper, I will present the future potential of ADM introducing various ceramic dielectric thick films for the integration of electronic ceramics.

  • Depending upon the existence of the battery, transponder is divided into active and passive transponder. The passive transponder operates without battery and so has no limitation in its operating range and life time. But it needs the RF-DC conversion circuit. In this paper, the analysis and design of the RF-DC conversion circuit in passive transponder operated in high frequency is presented and is confirmed by simulation and experiment.

  • Many analytical and experimental studies on the active suppression of nonlinear panel flutter by using piezoceramic patch have been carried out. However, these active control methods have a few important problems; a large amount of power is required to operate actuators, and additional apparatuses such as sensor systems and controller are needed. In this study passive suppression schemes for nonlinear flutter of composite panel, which is believed to be more robust suppression system than active control in practical operation, are proposed by using piezoelectric inductor-resistor series shunt circuit. Toward the end, a finite element equation of motion for an electromechanically coupled system is proposed using the Hamilton's principle. To achieve the best damping effect, optimal shape and location of the piezoceramic(PZT) patches are determined by using genetic algorithms. The results clearly demonstrate that the passive damping scheme by using piezoelectric shunt circuit can effectively attenuate the flutter.

  • The purpose of this study is to propose a procedure for evaluating quantitatively the increase of the equivalent damping ratio of a structure with passive/active vibration control systems subjected to a stationary wind load. A Lyapunov function governing the response of a structure and its differential equation are formulated first. Then the state-space equation of the structure coupled with the secondary damping system is solved. The results are substituted into the differential equation of the Lyapunov function and its derivative. The equivalent damping ratios are obtained from the Lyapunov function of the combined system and its derivative, and are used to assess the control effect of various damping devices quantitatively. The accuracy of the proposed procedure is confirmed by applying it to a structure with nonlinear as well as linear passive/active control systems.

  • We consider a statistical multiplexer model with finite buffer capacity and finite number of independent identical 3-state bursty voice sources. The burstiness of the sources is modeled by describing both two different active periods (at the rate of one packet perslot) and the passive periods during which no packets are generated. Assuming a mixture of two geometric distributions for active period and a geometric distribution for passive period and geometric distribution for passive period, we derive the recursive algorithm for the probability mass function of the buffer contents (in packets). We also obtain loss probability and the distribution of packet delay. Numerical results show that the system performance deteriorates considerably as the variance of the active period increases. Also, we see that the loss probability of 2-state Markov models is less than that of 3-state Markov models.

  • A conventional passive TMD is only effective when it is tuned properly. In many practical applications, inevitable off-tuning of a TMD occurs because the mass in a building floor could change by moving furnishings, people gathering, etc. When TMDs are off tuned, TMDs their effectiveness is sharply reduced. This paper discusses the application of MR-TMD, semi-active damper, for the reduction of floor vibrations due to machine and human movements. Here, the groundhook and skyhook algorithm are applied to a single degree of freedom system representative of building floors. And displacement and velocity base control method are applied to reduce t100r vibration. The performance of the STMD is compared to that of the equivalent passive TMD. Comparison of the results demonstrates the efficiency and robustness of STMD with respect to equivalent TMD.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of college women s active and passive smoking on menstrual discomfort. The subjects were 252 college female students (active smokers, 71; people who passively inhaled others smoke, 104; nonsmokers who also didn't inhale others smoke, 77). Subjects were selected from 5 colleges in North Kyong Sang Province, Korea. Data was collected from March to June of 2000 with a structured questionnaire. The instruments used for this study were the revised Menstrual Distress Questionnaire (MDQ) developed by Moos(1968), general characteristic, menstrual characteristic, and smoking characteristic scale developed by researchers. The data were analysed by the SPSS/PC+ program. The results were as follows 1. There was no statistically significant difference of menstrual discomfort level among the active smokers, those who passively inhaled others smoke, and who did not inhale others smoke(F= 2.613, p= .075). 2. The mean score of menstrual discomfort was moderate(M= 60.8008, SD= 17.9243). The level of menstrual discomfort was various (minimum score 29.00- maximum score 110.0). 3. Factors influencing menstrual discomfort were on life stress events(F= 4.057, p = .045), irregular menstrual cycle(t = 3.968, p = .047), and amount of flow during menstruation(F = 4.018, p = .019). The recommendations from this study are necessity of further studies to investigate how heavy active and passive smoking have effect on menstrual discomfort.

  • This study proposes a novel control and design method for a grid-connected inverter with an LCL filter without damping. The current resonance phenomenon must be considered when designing the grid-connected inverter system with an LCL filter. Passive or active damping is used in the inverter system to reduce the resonant current. However, passive damping reduces the efficiency of the system, and active damping methods are complex. If the resonant frequency is in a specific region, then the system will be unstable. This study examines the process of stabilizing the entire region without resonant damping. The validity of the proposed method is verified through simulation and experimentation.

  • During the last decade, social live streaming service like Periscope, Ustream, and YouNow has developed from a niche market into a mainstream activity. In this media environment, social live streaming service has a tremendous impact on the social behaviors of users. Despite the rapid development, there are a lack of studies to make better understand the media environment changes through social live streaming service. This study adopted an affordances approach that leads us to identify six distinctive social affordances (visibility, accessibility, information sharing, social interaction, role-taking, interactive revenue) for user engagement in social live streaming service. Specifically, this study explores the impact of social affordances on perceived flow, followed by user engagement including passive and active engagement. Empirical data analysis with 258 questionnaires suggests that social affordances affected users' flow perception, and flow has an effect on active as well as passive engagement. Contrary to the expectation in a hypothesized research model, only the impact of accessibility on flow was rejected.
