The purpose of the present study was to investigate the mechanism of metabolic partitioning between oxidization and esterification of liver fatty acids synthesized and secreted by the liver from egg yolk-fed laboratory rats. Animals were divided into four groups and orally administered egg yolk daily for 30 days: CON (control group, 1.0 g of saline solution), T1 (1.0 g of pork belly oil), T2 (1.0 g of egg yolk), and T3 (1.0 g of pork belly oil and 1.0 g of egg yolk, alternatively each week). The accumulation rate of [14C]-labelled lipid in liver was lowest in T2 among all treatments (P<0.05). Phospholipid secretion was higher in T2 than other treatments (P<0.05). The triglycerol secretion was highest in T1 and higher in the order of CON, T3, and T2 (P<0.05). Metabolic partitioning rate of phospholipid from total glycerolipid was highest in T2, followed by T3, CON and T1 (P<0.05). The 14CO2 production from total glycerolipid was the highest in T2 and showed a high oxidation rate compared to CON, T1, and T3 (P<0.05). Metabolic partitioning of glycerolipid from the liver decreased in triglycerol of T2 compared to CON, T1, and T3, whereas phospholipids of T2 increased (P<0.05).

In this paper, parallel computing method on the three-dimensional electromagnetic field is proposed. The present electromagnetic scattering analysis is conducted based on the time-harmonic vector wave equation and the finite element method. The edge-based element and 2nd -order absorbing boundary condition are used. Parallelization of the elemental numerical integration and the matrix assemblage is accomplished by allocating the partitioned finite element subdomain for each processor. The graph partitioning library, METIS, is employed for the subdomain generation. The large sparse matrix computation is conducted by MUMPS, which is the parallel computing library based on the multi-frontal method. The accuracy of the present program is validated by the comparison against the Mie-series analytical solution and the results by ANSYS HFSS. In addition, the scalability is verified by measuring the speed-up in terms of the number of processors used. The present electromagnetic scattering analysis is performed for a perfect electric conductor sphere, isotropic/anisotropic dielectric sphere, and the missile configuration. The algorithm of the present program will be applied to the finite element and tearing method, aiming for the further extended parallel computing performance.

The environmental behaviors of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are mainly governed by their solubility and partitioning properties on soil media in a subsurface system. In surfactant-enhanced remediation (SER) systems, surfactant plays a critical role in remediation. In this study, sorptive behaviors and partitioning of naphthalene in soils in the presence of surfactants were investigated. Silica and kaolin with low organic carbon contents and a natural soil with relatively higher organic carbon content were used as model sorbents. A nonionic surfactant, Triton X-100, was used to enhance dissolution of naphthalene. Sorption kinetics of naphthalene onto silica, kaolin and natural soil were investigated and analyzed using several kinetic models. The two compartment first-order kinetic model (TCFOKM) was fitted better than the other models. From the results of TCFOKM, the fast sorption coefficient of naphthalene ($k_1$) was in the order of silica > kaolin > natural soil, whereas the slow sorbing fraction ($k_2$) was in the reverse order. Sorption isotherms of naphthalene were linear with organic carbon content ($f_{oc}$) in soils, while those of Triton X-100 were nonlinear and correlated with CEC and BET surface area. Sorption of Triton X-100 was higher than that of naphthalene in all soils. The effectiveness of a SER system depends on the distribution coefficient ($K_D$) of naphthalene between mobile and immobile phases. In surfactant-sorbed soils, naphthalene was adsorbed onto the soil surface and also partitioned onto the sorbed surfactant. The partition coefficient ($K_D$) of naphthalene increased with surfactant concentration. However, the $K_D$ decreased as the surfactant concentration increased above CMC in all soils. This indicates that naphthalene was partitioned competitively onto both sorbed surfactants (immobile phase) and micelles (mobile phase). For the mineral soils such as silica and kaolin, naphthalene removal by mobile phase would be better than that by immobile phase because the distribution of naphthalene onto the micelles ($K_{mic}$) increased with the nonionic surfactant concentration (Triton X-100). For the natural soil with relatively higher organic carbon content, however, the naphthalene removal by immobile phase would be better than that by mobile phase, because a high amount of Triton X-100 could be sorbed onto the natural soil and the sorbed surfactant also could sorb the relatively higher amount of naphthalene.

It has been shown that the structure identification of a neuro-fuzzy model improves their accuracy performances in a various modeling problems. In this paper, we claim that the structure identification of a neuro-fuzzy model can also reduce the degree of inconsistency of its fuzzy rulebase. Thus, the resulting neuro-fuzzy model serves as more like a structured knowledge representation scheme. For this, we briefly review a structure identification method of a neuro-fuzzy model and propose a systematic method to measure inconsistency of a fuzzy rulebase. The proposed method is applied to problems or fuzzy system reproduction and nonlinear system modeling in order to validate our claim.
We consider the Fuzzy clustering which is devised for partitioning a set of objects into a certain number of groups by assigning the membership probabilities to each object. The researches carried out in this field before show that the Fuzzy clustering concept is involved so much that for a certain set of data, the main purpose of the clustering cannot be attained as desired. Thus we propose a new objective function, named as Fuzzy-Entroppy Function in order to satisfy the main motivation of the clustering which is classifying the data clearly. Also we suggest Mean Field Annealing Algorithm as an optimization algorithm rather than the. ISODATA used traditionally in this field since the objective function is changed. We show the Mean Field Annealing Algorithm works pretty well not only for the new objective function but also for the classical Fuzzy objective function by indicating that the local minimum problem resulted from the ISODATA can be improved.
The thermodynamic functions for the binding of the peptide Substance P (SP) on the surface of lipid vesicles made of various types of lipids were obtained by using isothermal titration calorimetry. The reaction enthalpies measured from the experiments were -0.11 to $-4.5kcal\;mol^{-1}$. The sizes of the lipid vesicles were measured with dynamic light scattering instrument in order to get the correlation between the reaction enthalpies and the vesicle sizes. The bindings of SP on the lipid vesicles with diameter of 37 to 108 nm were classified into the enthalpy-driven reaction or the entropy-driven reaction according to the size of the lipid vesicles. For the enthalpy-driven binding reaction, the significance of the electrostatic interactions between SP and lipid molecules was affirmed from the experimental results of the DMPC/DMPG/DMPH and DMPC/DMPS/DMPH vesicles as well as the importance of the hydrophobic interactions between hydrophobic groups of SP and lipid molecules.

The sales of consumer durables are composed of first time purchases and replacement purchases. Since the sales for most mature durable products are dominated by replacement sales, it is necessary to develop a model incorporating replacement component of sales in order to forecast total sales accurately. Several single product diffusion models incorporating replacement demand have been developed, but research addressing the multi-product diffusion models has not considered replacement sales. In this paper, we propose a model based on consumer choice behavior that simultaneously captures the diffusion and the replacement process for multi-product relationships. The proposed model enables the division of replacement sales into repurchase by previous users and transition purchase by users of different products. As a result, the model allows the partitioning of the total sales according to the customer groups (first-time buyers, repurchase buyers, and transition buyers), which allows companies to develop their production and marketing plans based on their customer mix. We apply the proposed model to the Korean automobile market, and compare the fitting and forecasting performance with other Bass-type multi-product models.

In order to determine new settings of key process variables optimally, a new rule induction method through a historical data is proposed without using an explicit functional model between process and quality variables. First, a partial least square is used to reduce the dimensionality of the process variables. Then new process settings that yield the best quality variable are identified by sequentially partitioning the reduced latent variable space using a patient rule induction method. The proposed method is illustrated with a case study obtained from steel-making processes. We also show, through simulation, that the proposed method gives more stable results than estimating an explicit function even when the form of the function is known in advance.

Recently the new inorganic sound-absorbing material manufacturing techniques have introduced. These mainly is plentifully used in the place where the noise damage becomes problem in life environment, partitioning of the apartment, the railroad and the express highway, school and the residential quarter neighboring area etc. While the sound-absorbing material has vast quantity of open pore, sound insulation material, used in the apartment and high building in order to prevent the sound between layers, has suitable quantity of closed pore. The fly ash is widely used in the cement materials and the concrete binder material. The bottom ash, however, is rarely used for the grain size is big and multiform with unburning carbon ingredient. In this paper, the practical field tests and the results on the sound reduction properties of formed concrete using bottom ash are described.

In order to apply fuzzy logic, two major tasks need to be performed: the derivation of fuzzy rules and the determination
of membership functions. These tasks are often difficult and time-consuming. This paper presents an
algorithmic method for generating membership functions and fuzzy rules applicable to decision-making problems;
the method includes an entropy minimization for clustering analog samples. Membership functions are derived by
partitioning the variables into desired number of fuzzy terms, and fuzzy rules are obtained using minimum entropy
clustering. In the mle derivation process, rule weights are also calculated. Inference and defuzzification for classification
problems are also discussed.
