In this study, three kinds of brake: discs including two coated brake discs and one steel disc were tested under the same experimental conditions on a reduced scale braking test bench. Plasma spray coating technique was used to coat ceramic powder on the discs. In the test, four commercial sintered brake pads were coupled with discs. Ceramic coated discs have shown good stability in friction coefficient at high speed and high energy braking conditions. However, ceramic coated discs caused more wear loss of pad mass than the steel disc. It was shown that thermal barrier effect in ceramic coated discs adjusted the thermal partition between pad and disc. Steel disc showed fluctuating friction coefficient at high speed but less wear loss of pad mass than ceramic coated discs.
The objective of this study is the finite element-transfer stiffness coefficient method, which is the combination of the modeling technique of finite element method and the transfer technique of transfer stiffness coefficient method, is applied in the static analyses of two dimensional curved beam structures. To confirm the effectiveness of the applied method, two computational models are selected and analyzed by using finite element method, finite element-transfer stiffness coefficient method and exact solution. The computational results of the static analyses for two computational models using finite element-transfer stiffness coefficient method are equal to those using finite element method. When the element partition number of curved beam structure is increased, the computational results of the static analyses using both methods approach the exact solution. We confirmed that the finite element-transfer stiffness coefficient method is superior to finite element method when the number of the curved beam elements is increased from the viewpoints of the computational speed and the utility of computer memory.

The soil concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were measured at 12 sites in Ansung, Kyonggi province, Korea. Correlation coefficient (r) between total PCBs and organic matter content (OM) was significant (r=0.562, p< 0.05). It suggests that organic matter may be a key factor of soil absorption of PCBs. The PCB concentrations of low chlorinated congeners with high vapor pressure were relatively abundant in air but high chlorinated congeners with low vapor pressure were mainly dominated by soil. The results indicated the influence of physicochemical properties of PCBs such as vapor pressure, octanol - air partition coefficient ( $K_{OA}$ ). The calculated soil/air fugacity quotients suggested that the soil may be a source of heavier molecular PCBs (>penta-CBs) to the atmosphere, where lighter molecular PCBs appear to be affected by a movement from air to soil, especially tetra-CBs. Therefore, PCB homologs with low vapor pressure might have been influenced by revolatilization from soil.
The physicochemical and structural properties of new capsaicin derivative, DA-5018, were examined. The reference standard of this compound was obtained by the recrystallization. A method for the determination of the dissociation constant of the compound is described. pH-solubility and distribution coefficient were determined by chromatographic method. Fundamental properties on thermal behaviors were investigated by TG, DTA and DSC. Structural analysis based on spectroscopic method coincided with the chemical structure of DA-5018. Approximate dissociation constant of the compound determined by UV spectral method was 9.35. Solubilities and partition coefficients in various pH buffer solution appeared pH-dependency. No crystal transition or further transition was found in the thermal analysis. This compound showed good stability, but pH 13 buffer and acetone made some degradative products.
To enhance the activity of ibuprofen, amides of ibuprofen, 1-piperazinyl-2-(4-isobutylphenyl)propionamide(Ibu-P.A.) and 1-(4-methylpiperazinyl)-2-(4-isobutylphenyl)propionamide (Ibu-M.P.), were synthesized and the pharmaceutical properties and the pharmacological activities of the amides were studied. The lipid:water partition coefficients and pKa values were examined in vitro, and the antiinflammatory effect, analgesic effects, acute toxicity, and intestinal absorption were studied for the amides and compared with ibuprofen in vivo. The results are summarized as belows; 1) The lipid:water partition coefficients of Ibu-M.P. were higher than those of ibuprofen. 2) The calculated pKa values of ibuprofen and Ibu-M.P. were 5.49 and 8.66, respectively. 3) The antiinflammatory effects of ibuprofen, Ibu-P.A., and Ibu-M.P. were same intensity, but the duration of the effects of Ibu-P.A. and Ibu-M.P. were longer than that of ibuprofen. 4) The analgesic effect of Ibu-M.P. was more potent than those of ibuprofen and Ibu-P.A. in the acetic acid-induced writhing test. 5) The $LD_{50}$ was 495 mg/kg for ibuprofen, 187 mg/kg for Ibu-M.P., and over 1250 mg/kg for Ibu-P.A.. 6) The absorption rate constants(k) and half-life($t_{1/2}$) were 0.74($hr^{-1}$) and 0.94(hr) for ibuprofen, and 0.72 ($hr^{-1}$) and 0.96 (hr) respectively for Ibu-M.P..
Ketorolac tromethamine(KT) is a nonsteroidal agent with potent analgesic and moderate anti-inflammatory activity. The lipid-water partition coefficient of KT was evaluated and KT gel was formulated as a gel containing different pH, different concentrations of polymer (poloxamer 407, carbopol 941), propylene glycol, ethanol and various enhancers. The resulting KT gels were evaluated with respect to their viscosity, in vitro drug permeation rate through hairless mouse skin and stability. In n-octanol and chloroform, the lipid-water partition coefficient of KT was the highest at pH 4 phosphate buffer. The apparent viscosity of KT gel increased with an increase in gel pH, polymer and enhancer concentration. But the apparent viscosity of KT gel decreased with an increase in ethanol concentration. The permeation rate of KT through hairless mouse skin from gels different pH was maximum at pH 4 which is close to KT $pK_{a}$ 3.54. The permeation rate decreased with an increase in polymer, propylene glycol concentration. But the permeation rate increased with an increase in ethanol. The increase of drug concentration from 1 to 3% induced linear increase in permeation rate. The best enhancer was the combination of $Labrasol^{\circledR},\;Transcutol^{\circledR}$, oleic acid and l-menthol. In the accelerated stability test(25, 40 and $50{\circ}C$), pH 5 gel was most stable and pH 4 gel was most unstable for 90 days.
Acetanilide is a High Production Volume Chemical, which is produced about 2,300 tons/year in Korea as of 1998 survey. Most is used as an intermediate for synthesis of pharmaceuticals and dyes. The chemical is one of seven chemicals, which are under the frame of OECD SIDS program sponsored by National Institute of Environmental Research of Korea. Regarding the information on the environmental fate. bioconcentration is one of important factor to estimate the environmental tranfer. However, measurement of bioconcentration needs high expense and time. For this reason, OECD recommends to use BCFWIN model to estimate bioconcentration of organic chemicals, BCFWIN estimates the bioconcentration factor (BCF) of an organic compound using the log octanol-water partition coefficient (Kow) of the compound. Structures are entered into BCFWIN through SMITES (Simplified Molecular Input Line Entry System) notations. The BCFWIN method classifies a compound as either ionic or non-ionic. ionic compounds include carboxylic acids, sulfonic acids and salts of sulfonic acids, and charged nitrogen compounds (nitrogen with a + 5 valence such as quaternary ammonium compounds). All other compounds are classified as non-ionic. In this study, bioaccumulation of acetanilide was estimated using BCFWIN model based on SMIIES notation, chemical name data and partition coefficient as one of environmental fate/distribution of the chemical elements.
Clenbuterol, a selective ${\beta}_2-adrenergic$ receptor stimulant, has been introduced as a potent bronchodilator for patients with bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis and pulmonary emphysema. For the purpose of developing a transdermal preparation for clenbuterol, we attempted to select an optimal solvent system and permeation enhancer among fatty acids and fatty alcohols which are known to accelerate the penetration of various drugs in permeation experiments using hairless mouse skin and Franz diffusion cell. Apparent partition coefficient of clenbuterol was increased as pH of buffer solution was increased and solubility of clenbuterol was increased as the percent of propylene glycol(PG) in buffer solution(pH 10) was increased. Permeability of clenbuterol from different buffer(pH 10)/PG solvent mixtures was decreased as the percent of PG in pH 10 buffer solution was increased and among the various enhancers studied, lauryl alcohol was found to be the most effective enhancer, increasing the permeability of clenbuterol approximately 76-fold compared with control. Lauryl alcohol$(0{\sim}2%)$ enhanced the permeability of clenbuterol concentration-dependently. In this study, the optimal solvent system for the penetration of clenbuterol was found to be 50/50 buffer(pH 10)/PG solvent mixture containing 2% lauryl alcohol.
A number of different methods have been used for modeling the sorption of volatile organic chlorinated compounds such as tetrachloroethylene/perchloroethylene (PCE). In this study, PCE was adsorbed in several natural sorbents, i.e., Pahokee peat, vermicompost, BionSoil®, and natural soil, in the batch experiments. Several sorption models such as linear, Freundlich, solubility-normalized Freundlich model, and Polanyi-Manes model (PMM) were used to analyze sorption isotherms. The relationship between sorption model parameters, organic carbon content (foc), and elemental C/N ratio was studied. The organic carbon normalized partition coefficient values (log Koc = 1.50-3.13) in four different sorbents were less than the logarithm of the octanol-water partition coefficient (log Kow = 3.40) of PCE due to high organic carbon contents. The log Koc decreased linearly with log foc and log C/N ratio, but increased linearly with log O/C, log H/C, and log (N+O)/C ratio. Both log KF,oc or log KF,oc decreased linearly with log foc (R2 = 0.88-0.92) and log C/N ratio (R2 = 0.57-0.76), but increased linearly with log (N+O)/C (R2 = 0.93-0.95). The log qmax,oc decreased linearly as log foc and log C/N increased, whereas it increased with log O/C, log H/C and log (N+O)/C ratios. The log qmax,oc increased linearly with (N+O)/C indicating a strong dependence of qmax,oc on the polarity index. The results showed that PCE sorption behaviors were strongly correlated with the physicochemical properties of soil organic matter (SOM).
