Underappreciated Resource Phosphorus : Implications in Agronomy

  • Phosphorus (P) which is required by all living plants and animals is an important input for economic crop and livestock production systems. Phosphorus containing compounds are essential for photosynthesis in plants, for energy transformations and for the activity of some hormones in both plants and animals. Loss of soil P to water can occur in particulate forms of P with eroded surface soil and in soluble forms in runoff, soil interflow, and deep leaching. The excessive losses of P from agricultural systems can degrade water quality of surface waters, resulting in accelerating eutrophication. Thus, P is often the limiting element and its control is of prime importance in reducing the accelerated eutrophication of surface waters. However, reserves of phosphate begin to run out, the impacts are likely be immense in terms of rising food prices, growing food insecurity. This paper reviews underappreciated resource as a key component of fertilizers and one of controversial pollutant in terms agronomy and environment.

Removal of S $O_{2}$ and NO by Dry Sorbent(II) - Efficiency of Cu-Ce and Cu-7Al - (건식법에 의한 이산화황과 산화질소의 제거(II) - Cu-Ce 및 Cu-7Al의 효율 -)

  • Flue gas control systems for small-scale combustors must be designed to provide highly effective removal of three criteria pollutants (S $O_{2}$, N $O_{x}$ and particulate matter), and must be safe, reliable and small. These requirements make dry, regenerative clean-up process particularly attractive and this paper describes a new concept for integrated pollutant control : a filter comprised of layered, gas permeable membranes that act as an S $O_{2}$ sorbant, a N $O_{x}$ reduction catalyst and a particulate filter. A mixed metal oxide sorbent, Cu-Ce was used as a sorbent/catalyst and the activity was compared with Cu-7Al. The S $O_{2}$ removal eficiency of Cu-Ce was increased with temperature increase up to 500$^{\circ}$C and the catalytic activity for NO was higher than that of Cu-7Al. By the sulfation of Cu-Ce, the reduction activity was increased at the temperature higher than 350$^{\circ}$C. The regeneration of Cu-Ce was very fast and some amount of elemental sulfar was found.

Performance Evaluation of Domestic -made DOC for the Heavy-duty Diesel Engine (국내 제작된 대형 디젤산화촉매의 배출가스 성능평가)

  • In recent years, environmental damage to urban area becomes serious problem due to the exhaust emissions by increasing the number of vehicle . Especially, diesel particulate matters(DPM) are hazardous air pollutant s to human health and environment. The reduction technologies of exhaust emissions from diesel engines are improvement of engine combustion, fuel quality and development of diesel exhaust aftertreatment. In this study, a diesel oxidation catalyst(DOC) that is one of diesel exhaust aftertreatments was made for performance evaluation . It was tested for NA and turbocharged engine by D-13 mode that currently be used for regulation driving test mode in Korea Scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS) was used for the analysis of the particle size distribution with and w/o DOC. As the results , for NA and tubochartged engine, CO, THC, DPM was respectively reduced 85.7, 40.7,3.3% and 79.1, 53.1, 11.6% by DOC. Test results of particle size distribution was showed that particle number is 107 ~108per ㎤ , 2 $\times$105 ~5$\times$105$\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥ for weight concentration and 100~200nm for particle mean size in diesel engine and there is no effect to reduce the particle concentration by the DOC.

PM Management Methods Considering Condensable PM Emissions from Stationary Sources in Seoul and Incheon (고정오염원의 응축성 먼지 배출량을 고려한 서울과 인천의 먼지 관리방안)

  • In this study, the new particulate matter emissions considering condensable PM (CPM) of stationary pollutant sources were calculated to modify the CAPSS emissions based on only filterable PMs in Seoul and Incheon. When the new calculated emissions were compared to the existing filterable PM based emissions of local governments, different contribution patterns of emission sources were found. For example, the proportion of mobile sources was high when the filterable PM was considered; however, the contribution of non-industrial sources was dominant in Seoul when the emissions of CPM were considered. Also, the proportion of energy industrial combustion and manufacturing combustion sources was significant in Incheon when CPM emissions considered. Therefore, it seems to be much desirable to consider CPM emissions for determining adequate locations of collective energy facilities and manufacturing combustion facilities in the future. In addition, CPM should be considered to solve the dust problem nationwide. The emission analysis, diagnosis, prediction and countermeasures using CPM emissions should be appropriately performed.

A Study on Characteristics of DPF for Heavy-duty Diesel Engine on Pollutant Emission Reduction (대형디젤엔진 배출가스 저감을 위한 DPF의 재생특성 연구)

  • The combustion purpose of diesel engine is to reduce the emission of green gas and to produce high output. Generally, the regulation matter of emission gas is largely diveded by 'THC', 'NOx', 'CO' and 'PM'. Among those matters, the most problem is to disgorge into 'PM', the character of diesel combustion. Diesel PM can be controlled using Diesel Particulate Filter, which can effectively reduce the level of soot emissions to ambient background levels. $NO_2$ generated by the DOC is used to combust the carbon collected in the DPF at low temperature. To certificate DPF device that is suitable to domestic circumstances, it is necessary to exactly evaluate the DPF devices according to the regulation of DPF certificate test procedure fur retrofit. To do carry out the above-mentioned description the understanding of that regulation like the standard of PM reduction is needed. In this study the test procedure including test cycle and BPT test condition was examined, and also the test result for specific DPF was analyzed. In every test like field test, PM reduction efficiency test and Seoul-10 mode test, no defect was showed.

Characteristics of Air Pollution at Kimhae (김해지방의 대기오염 특성)

  • This paper aims to describe the characteristics of air pollution using air pollutants concentration and meteorological data observed at Kimhae from December 1996 to November, 1997. The results are as follows : The concentration distribution of sulfur dioxide($SO_2$), carbon monoxide(CO), particulate matter(PM-10), and nitrogen dioxide($NO_2$) is high during the late fall and winter and low during the summer, but ozone concentration is low during the winter season and high during summer season except Jangma period and these distributions appear to be closely connected with insolation and the number of clear day. Diurnal variation of concentrations for sulfur dioxide, particulate matter, and carbon monoxide are high during the rush hours and nighttime and low during the daytime and these variations are distinct toward the winter season. And diurnal variation of nitrogen dioxide concentration has also same pattern and these patterns are closely related to the increasing traffic volume at rush hours. Diurnal variation of ozone concentration is generally increase for daytime and decrease for the late afternoon and are closely related to the insolation and photochemical reaction. The 24 hour average concentrations of air pollutant observed at Kimhae represented a positive correlation and a negative correlation for $O_3$ and also a negative correlation for the meteorological elements such as wind speed and cloud cover.

Improvement of Working Surroundings in the Industrial Waste Incinerator (산업폐기물 소각플랜트의 작업환경개선)

  • A lot of particulate matter and an offensive odor are emitted during the operations of an industrial waste incinerator (IWI), especially pre_treatment and waste input processes. These pollutants affect the labor efficiency of an operator. Therefore, in this study. we have studied the improvement of working surroundings in the industrial waste incinerator by designing a new control system. A computational fluid dynamics has been used to find the diffusion flows of air pollutants (mainly particles and odor) to the working surroundings of the waste treatment complexes. The results obtained from the simulation analysis applied to the basic design on the points (and/or site) and types of pollution control devices. When pollutant control devices are constructed, the concentration of each pollutant at site 1 and 2 decreased about 83-97% for toluene, 48-72% for styrene, 75-87% for xylene, and 23-36% for ammonia, respectively. In addition, the PM-10 and TSP were decreased about 87% and 86% at site 3 (lower part of the waste input), 87% and 85% at site 4 (side part of the waste input), respectively. These indicated that the new control system had an excellent performance of particulate matter and odor removal and it could be applied to other waste treatment plant in place of an industrial waste incinerator.

Effect of Slot Discharge-Angle Change on Exhaust Efficiency of Range Hood System with Air Curtain (에어커튼형 레인지후드의 슬롯 토출 각도 변화와 배기 효율)

  • When oil is used for cooking in detached or apartment houses, large amounts of oil-mist, smoke, and particulate substances are generated and dispersed into the indoor-air environment. These pollutants diffuse into the surroundings and spread their odor while rising fast at a high temperature due to the heat energy from the gas range. Although the exhaust gas is discharged from the exhaust hood, which is installed on the top of a gas range to remove the diffuse pollutants, the exhaust conditions can vary greatly because they depend on the shape of the exhaust hood and the discharge rate. In this paper, the air that is required for the gas-exhaustion process is supplied by an air curtain that surrounds the kitchen hood, and the pollutant-capturing efficiency varies depending on the angle of the discharge grills; the pollutant-capturing efficiency was studied using a numerical-analysis method. The results indicate that the pollutant-capturing efficiency is not significantly changed by a change of the discharge-grill angle at a low air-discharge rate; however, at a high air-discharge rate, the efficiency value increases with an increase of the discharge-grill angle, whereby the best value occurs at 30 degrees and the efficiency decreases above this angle. Below 30 degrees, the effect of the discharge rate on the capturing efficiency is more than that of the discharge-grill angle.

Alleviation of PM2.5-associated Risk of Daily Influenza Hospitalization by COVID-19 Lockdown Measures: A Time-series Study in Northeastern Thailand

  • Objectives: Abrupt changes in air pollution levels associated with the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak present a unique opportunity to evaluate the effects of air pollution on influenza risk, at a time when emission sources were less active and personal hygiene practices were more rigorous. Methods: This time-series study examined the relationship between influenza cases (n=22 874) and air pollutant concentrations from 2018 to 2021, comparing the timeframes before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in and around Thailand's Khon Kaen province. Poisson generalized additive modeling was employed to estimate the relative risk of hospitalization for influenza associated with air pollutant levels. Results: Before the COVID-19 outbreak, both the average daily number of influenza hospitalizations and particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of 2.5 ㎛ or less (PM2.5) concentration exceeded those later observed during the pandemic (p<0.001). In single-pollutant models, a 10 ㎍/m3 increase in PM2.5 before COVID-19 was significantly associated with increased influenza risk upon exposure to cumulative-day lags, specifically lags 0-5 and 0-6 (p<0.01). After adjustment for co-pollutants, PM2.5 demonstrated the strongest effects at lags 0 and 4, with elevated risk found across all cumulative-day lags (0-1, 0-2, 0-3, 0-4, 0-5, and 0-6) and significantly greater risk in the winter and summer at lag 0-5 (p<0.01). However, the PM2.5 level was not significantly associated with influenza risk during the COVID-19 outbreak. Conclusions: Lockdown measures implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic could mitigate the risk of PM2.5-induced influenza. Effective regulatory actions in the context of COVID-19 may decrease PM2.5 emissions and improve hygiene practices, thereby reducing influenza hospitalizations.

Improvement Plan of Fugitive Dust Regulations in Construction Site (건설현장 비산먼지 규정 개선방안)

  • A recent issue of fine dust is particulate matter with a diameter of less than $10{\mu}g/m^3$. It's classified as a pollutant that has a fatal effect on the human body when inhaled. The fugitive dust must be well controlled, since the adverse effects of dust on the surroundings are increased when the dust is blown away by the wind. Since the construction site is the place where the most fugitive dust is discharged in Korea, managing the fugitive dust discharged from the construction site can be an important issue to solve the problem of domestic fine dust. However, since the construction industry in Korea is the largest in Korea, it is difficult to control the emission of fugitive dust in the domestic construction site. In this paper, we compare and analyze the fugitive dust regulations applied to construction sites in major cities and propose the improvement plans to help control the fugitive dust generated in domestic construction sites.
