We examined the effect of low temperature heat-treatment on the optical properties of the photonic crystals self-assembled using a monodispersed spherical $SiO_2$ nanoparticle. When the heat treatment temperature increased, the reflectance peak, which is induced by the photonic band gap, moved to a shorter wavelength direction, and the peak intensity of Fabry-Perot fringes also increased. The highest reflectance peak intensity was obtained in the sample heat-treated at $250\~300^{\circ}C$. The heat-treatment reduced the average particle size and the quantity of defects, and increased the packing density of the photonic crystal.
Porous frit-bonded SiC ceramics were successfully prepared at a temperature as low as $800^{\circ}C$ from SiC, frit, and microbeads (glass or polymer). The effects of SiC starting particle size and microbead addition on microstructure, porosity, and flexural strength were investigated. The addition of hollow glass microbead improved the strength of frit-bonded SiC ceramics without the loss of porosity by acting additional binder phase between SiC grains. The 65 ${\mu}m$-sized SiC resulted in lower porosity and higher strength than 50 ${\mu}m$-sized SiC because of higher packing density. Typical flexural strengths of frit-bonded SiC were 23 MPa at 46% porosity and 19 MPa at 49% porosity.

The ice slurry maker which can produce the ice slurry well for the ice particle in-flowing condition was revised. We removed the stagnant region at the top of the ice slurry maker, and IPF 40% could be realized. The IPF controller with 6 mm diameter holes at the bottom was designed. But the IPF controller with only 6 mm diameter holes could not control IPF in a pipe. This is because the ice particles at ice slurry flow exist homogeneously not only at the upper part but also at the bottom part. We changed the hole size of IPF controller surface using fine meshes and then, IPF in a pipe was increased by 70% when the hole size was $80{\mu}m$ and less.

The quality of high performance concrete largely depends on water cement ratio, porosity, material composition and mix methods. The uniformity of color, texture and compressive strengths are quality indicators commonly used to assess the overall characteristics of concrete mixes. The homogeneity and share of coarse aggregates play a key role in concrete quality and must be analyzed in a microscopic point of view. This research studies the quality of high performance concrete by taking drilled cores in both horizontal and vertical directions from a 1.0 $m^3$ specimen. The coarse aggregate, expressed in digitized $100{\times}116$ dpi resolution images are processed based on brightness in colors through commercial software converted into text files. With the image converting to text format, the share of coarse aggregate is quantified leading to a satisfactory assessment of homogeneity - a quality index of high performance concrete. The compressive strengths of concrete and the shares of coarse aggregate of the samples are also compared in this research study to illustrate its correlation in concrete quality. It is concluded that a higher homogeneity of aggregate exists in the vertical plane than that of the horizontal planes of the high performance concrete. In addition, the concrete specimen showing denser particle packing has relatively higher compressive strengths. The research methodology provides an easy-to-use, direct measurement of high performance concrete when conducting quality assessment in the construction site.
Casting behavior of Zr(Y,Ce)O2 TZP/Mullite suspension during pressure filtration was investigated to prepare multi-layered Functionally Gradient Materials(FGM). The dispersion stabilities of each layer suspension were investigated by examination of zeta potential and viscosity. The each suspensions with 20 vol.% solid loading and 100 첸 of viscosity was prepared after fix of the dispersing agent (Sodium hexa-meta phosphate) and the binder (Hydroxyethyl cellulose), and then the cakes were formed at the 2.5 MPa~10.0MPa pressure range. The cake thickness of all suspensions was increased with the square root of time at the constant pressure, and the relations between filtration pressure(P)a nd dehydration rate (Q=dh/dt) showed that the flows of filtrates in the consolidated layers were laminar. The permeabilities were nearly constant during filtration, and kozeny constants(Kc) of the suspensions were 4.8~6.7. These valumes were seen as close to 5, which might be homogeneous particle packing during filtration. On the basis of those data, the multi layered compaction with 9 mm thickness and 52.5% green density was prepared by continuous pressure filtration.

The purpose of this study is to microencapsulate a highly hygroscopic drug, pyridostigmine bromide (PB), with a waterproof wall material, in order to increase the flowability of the drug particles. Polyvinylacetaldiethylaminoacetate (AEA), Eugragit E and Eugragit RS were examined as the wall materials. Microcapsules containing PB were prepared by the evaporation technique in an acetone/liquid paraffin system using aluminum tristearate as a core material, and evaluated for drug encapsulation efficiency, surface morphology, particle size and drug dissolution. The encapsulation of PB in the wall material was almost complete. Among the wall materials examined, AEA exhibited the most excellency in shape, surface texture, flowability, size distribution of microcapsules. Above results suggest that AEA would be a potential wall material for microcapsulation of highly hygroscopic drugs, such as PB. Through microencapsulation with AEA, inconvenience of handling of PB powders encountered in the process of weighing and packing the powders to tableting die or capsule body could be greatly improved.
The modifier proposed in this research is for enhancing the affinity of the glass component with the high polymer resin and the molecular weight. The particle packing, tensile strength and shielding performance of the shielding sheet made of the tungsten oxide were evaluated. The best effect can be obtained when 20% of the modifier PMMA used to improve the shielding performance and maintain the affinity and strength with the sealant is mixed. The fusion of the materials presented in this study and the mass production of the shielding sheet through the modifier are possible and will contribute to the production of lightweight shielding sheets in the future.

Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) has high compressive and tensile strengths due to the particle packing, and its ductile behavior can be ensured by utilizing steel fibers. However, since the UHPC members exhibit different characteristics of crack behavior and tensile behavior from normal concrete, the tension stiffening and cracking characteristics of the UHPC should be accurately modeled for the design and analysis of the UHPC members. In this study, uniaxial tension tests was conducted on the UHPC members with strands, where the test variables were diameter and reinforcing ratio of strands. Detailed analyses were also conducted to identify the tensile characteristics and crack behavior of the UHPC members. By comparing the test results with current code provisions and other models proposed by existing researchers, their applicability for estimation of crack behavior of the UHPC members was examined.
In the present experimental study, the high performance hybrid fiber reinforced concrete (HPHFRC) is prepared using the Modified Andreasen and Andersen (A&A) particle packing model. Total of 16 trial mixes of HPHFRC with Indian standard sand (SS) and natural river sand (NS) are prepared to achieve the selection criteria (flow percent>150 and compressive strength>80 MPa). Based on the flow percent and compressive strength criteria, the selected mixes evaluated to study the effect of usage of natural river sand (NS) and the expensive Indian standard sand (SS) on the mechanical, durability, and microstructure property of designed HPHFRC. It has been found that the Modified A&A model is reliable to design the mix for HPHFRC with excellent mechanical, durability, and microstructure properties. In addition to that, a moderate difference in the mechanical and durability properties of NS contained HPHFRC and SS contained HPHFRC is found. Based on the obtained results of NS contained HPHFRC, it can be concluded that the use of natural river sand (NS) can be successfully adopted for the production of HPHFRC, resulted in a reduction of the production cost without compromising the excellent performance of HPHFRC.
In this study, three pilot-scale wetland systems were built for treating stormwater runoff from asphalt road. Each of the system consists of a settling tank and a vertical flow wetland packed with 25%, 50%, and 75% woodchip as treatment media. According to the analysis of the distributions of particle size, it was found that solids ranging in size $0.52-30{\mu}m$ were predominant in the stormwater runoff. After 24-hours settling, those coarser than $20{\mu}m$ were significantly detained. Further retention, especially for the finer-sized fraction, occurred in the wetland through internal recirculation during the dry day periods. As a primary media of the wetland, woodchip showed a high filtration and attachment capacity for the particulates in pre-settled stormwater, whereas overall amount of solids in the wetland effluent increased due to the detachment of woody elements from the media. This was observed mainly during the initial 75 days of operation, and the size and detachment rate were found to be strongly related with the woodchip packing ratio. The mechanism involving woody particle detachment was modeled as a first-order form. In addition, water quality factors and operational parameters affecting the detachment were analyzed and discussed.
