  • In this study, silicon sludge from semiconductor dicing process is recycled to fabricate silica nanoparticles, which are applied as dispersing materials for electro-responsive (ER) smart fluid. In specific, metal impurities are removed from silicon sludge by acid washing to obtain the high-purity silicon powder. And then, silica nanoparticles are synthesized by facile hydrothermal method employing the silicon powder as reactant material. To control the size of silica nanoparticles, the reaction time of hydrothermal method is varied as 8, 15, 20, and 30 hours are applied to control the size of silica nanoparticles. Sizes of silica nanoparticles are increased proportionally to the reaction time owing to the increased numbers of hydrolysis and condensation reactions. As-synthesized silica nanoparticles are prepared as electro-responsive smart fluids by dispersing into silicon oil. Silica nanoparticles synthesized by 30 hours of hydrothermal reaction (SiO2-H30) exhibit the highest shear stress of 21.4 Pa under an applied electric field strength of 3.0kV mm-1. Such enhancement in ER performance of SiO2-H30 among various silica nanoparticles are attribute to the reinforcing effect originated from the mixed particle size, which allowing the formation of rigid chain-like structures. Accordingly, this study successfully propose a recycling method of silicon sludge to synthesize silica nanoparticles and their derived ER fluids, which may suggest new possibility to ESG management emphasizing the eco-friendliness.

  • A model describing the distributions of surfactants and HOCs (hydrophobic organic chemicals) in surfactant/HOC/activated carbon systems for surfactant reuse in soil washing process was developed. The model simulation was conducted for the evaluation of the effect of concentrations of surfactant, HOC, or activated carbons. Phenanthrene as a target HOC, Triton X-100 as surfactant and three granular activated carbons with different particle sizes (4-12, 12-20, and 20-40 mesh) were used in the model simulation. The distributions of HOC were significantly affected by surfactant dosages, especially at around the CMC(s). The results of selectivities for phenanthrene were much larger than 1 at various concentrations of surfactants, phenanthrene and activated carbons, which mean that the selective adsorption of phenanthrene by activated carbons is a proper separation method from surfactant solution. The model can be applied for the design of the surfactant reuse process using activated carbons without extra experimental efforts.

  • This study is to measure the radiation dose of neutrons generated by the particle accelerator during X-ray (photon) treatment with a neutron detection method by using CR-39, and to research how the generation of neutrons may incur problems associated with radiation doses for patient treatment when using high energy photons for cancer treatment as a clinical application. The findings are summarized as follows : The results showed that average 0.35mSv was measured with exposure of 1Gy photon in case of fast neutron, 0.65mSv with exposure of 2Gy photon, 1.82mSv exposure of 5Gy, 0.26mSv with exposure of 1Gy photon in case of thermal neutron, 0.56mSv with exposure of 2Gy photon, and 1.23mSv with exposure of 5Gy of photon. By measuring the occurrence of neutron by using Wedge Filter, it has been confirmed that the occurrence of neutrons increased when using Wedge Filter. The results also showed that more neutrons were detected over the existing experiments when using an SRS Cone requiring high doses of radiation. Total 2.85mSv neutrons were found on the average with exposure of 5Gy photon in case of fast neutron and 1.37mSv neutrons were found on the average with exposure of 5Gy photon in case of thermal neutron. During the general treatment, about 1.6 times more neutrons over 5Gy photon were found in case of fast neutron and about 1.12 time more neutrons over 5Gy photon were found in case of thermal neutron.

  • The porous silica membrane was prepared from Si(${OC}_2H_5)_4-H_2O$ system by sol-gel method. To investigate the characteristics of gels and porous silica membrane, we examined gels and porous silica membrane using TG-DTA, X-ray diffractometer, IR spectrophotometer, BET, SEM and TEM. The optimum mole ratio of Si(OC$_2$H$_{5}$)$_4$ : $H_2O$ $C_2$H$_{5}$OH for porous silica membrane was 1 : 4.5 : 4. The porous silica membrane was obtained by heat treatment of the gel above 700 $^{\circ}C$. The specific surface area of sintered gel was 3.8 $m^2$/g to 902.3 $m^2$/g at 100 $^{\circ}C$ to 1100 $^{\circ}C$ The pore size of sintered gel was in the range 20 $\AA$~ 50$\AA$. The particle size of sintered gel was 15 nm to 30 nm at 30$0^{\circ}C$ to 700$^{\circ}C$. The performance of the porous silica membrane was investigated for the separation of $H_2$/$N_2$ gas mixture. Gas separation through porous silica membrane depends upon Knudsen flow and surface flow. The veal separation factor($\alpha$) of $H_2$/$N_2$ was 5.17 at 155.15 cmHg and $25^{\circ}C$. The real separation factor($\alpha$), head separation factor($\beta$), and tail separation factor( $\bar{B}$) increased as the pressure of permeation cell Increased.sed.

  • Though ethanol can theoretically generate 12 electrons during oxidation to carbon dioxide, the complete oxidation of ethanol is hard to achieve due to the strong bond between the two carbons in its molecular structure. Therefore, development of high activity catalyst for ethanol oxidation is necessary for the commercialization of direct ethanol fuel cell. In this study, some binary and ternary electrocatalysts of PtSn/C and PtSnAu/C have been synthesized and characterized. The catalysts were fabricated with modified polyol method with the amounts of 20 wt%, where the Pt : Sn ratios in the PtSn/C were 1 : 0, 4 : 1, 3 : 1, 2 : 1, 1.5 : 1, 1 : 1, 1 : 1.5 and Pt:Sn:Au ratios in the PtSnAu/C were 5 : 5 : 0, 5 : 4 : 1, 5 : 3 : 2, 5 : 2 : 3. From the XRD and TEM analysis results, the catalysts were found to have face centered cubic structure with particle size of around $1.9{\sim}2.4\;nm$. The activity in the ethanol oxidation was examined with cyclic voltammetry and the results indicated that PtSn(1.5 : 1)/C and PtSnAu(5 : 2 : 3)/C had the highest activity in each catalyst system. Further tests with single cell were performed with those catalysts. It was found that PtSn/C(1.5 : 1) exhibited the best performance while the long term stability of PtSnAu/C(5 : 2 : 3) is better than PtSn/C(1.5 : 1).

  • Three-dimensional finite-difference simulation in a small-scale half-sphere basin with planar free-surface is performed for an arbitrary shear-dislocation point source. A new scheme to deal with free-surface boundary condition is presented. Then basin parameters are examined to understand main characteristics on ground-motion response in the basin. To analyze the frequency content of ground motion in the basin, spectral amplitudes are compared with each other for four sites inside and outside the basin. Also particle motions for those sites are examined to find which kind of wave plays a dominant role in ground-motion response. The results show that seismic energy is concentrated on a marginal area of the basin far from the source. This focusing effect is mainly due to constructive interference of the direct Swave with basin-edge induced surface waves. Also, ground-motion amplification over the deepest part of the basin is relatively lower than that above shallow basin edge. In the small-scale basin with relatively simple bedrock interface, therefore, the ground-motion amplification may be more related to the source azimuth or direction of the incident waves into the basin rather than depth of it.

  • Standardized remediation process for the soil contaminated with arsenic is insufficient due to characteristics of its anion-mobility and speciation changed by Eh-pH of soil. One of the well-known efficient remediation processes is the modified soil washing that particle separation process by only water. However, it is required that the treatment plan for the fine soil what was discharged after modified soil washing. Therefore, this research suggests the treatment plan that the recycling method using arsenic immobilization by FeS-$H_2O_2$. The batch experiments results for the arsenic immobilization showed that the water content was at least 50%, the injection of FeS and $H_2O_2$ (assay-35%) were 8% (w/watdrybase) and 0.2 mL/10 g of fine soil respectively. Arsenic concentration with KSLT was decreased about 95.4%. The results indicated that the mixing of FeS-$H_2O_2$ was highly efficient on the immobilization of As-contaminated soil. The mixing ratio as 13% of bentonite with 3% of cement (at based on 100% of immobilized fine soil) was satisfied with standard of liner for landfill construction.

  • Adsorption equilibrium experiments for the phenol on granular activated carbon(16~25 mesh) and powder activated carbon(325 mesh) were carried out at $25{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ and the results were expressed with Freundlich isotherm. Adsorption rate experiments were executed in batch adsorption system under the condition that can be neglecting mass transfer resistance at the external surface of the particle. The results were analysed with the Miller's method to evaluate the linear driving force(LDF) adsorption rate constant. Fixed bed adsorption experiments were performed by adopting different flow rates in the activated carbon-phenol system at $25{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. The theoretical breakthrough curves were estimated with the simple constant pattern solution. The adsorption rate constant of LDF model was not a fixed value but variable with adsorption amount. The experimental results were better agreed with the estimation of breakthrough curve using the variable adsorption rate constant than the results estimated using the average fixed adsorption rate constant.

  • In this study, we tried to add the conductivity to natural polymer like bacterial cellulose (BC) coated with the conductive polymer PEDOT:PEG, graphene and silver nano-wire (AgNW). Sulfuric acid of 10 to 20% was previously mixed with PEDOT:PEG and then the solution was electron spin-coated on the BC membrane. And then, additive coating with graphene and AgNW were done to improve conductivity, which was examined by hall effect. As the result, we confirmed a considerable improvement of conductivity compared to BC-coated film without sulfuric acid treatment as $2.487{\times}10^{10}$ vs $8.093{\times}10^{15}$ ($1/cm^3$), showing higher electron density with $3.25{\times}10^5$ times. Also, we identified that changed particle type to the polymer type by sulfuric acid using SEM analysis. For FT-IR analysis, it was confirmed that S-O radical ($1200cm^{-1}$) increased in the sulfuric acid treatment than non-treated sulfuric acid. As the method used very small amount of PEDOT:PEG, its transparency could be kept, and pre-treatment process of sulfuric acid will be able to simplify the production process.
