Synthesis gas was produced by the partial oxidation of methane. For the preparation of catalysts, Ni, known to be active in this reaction and cheap, was used as the active component and $CeO_2$, having high oxygen storage capability and high redox ability, was used as the support. The catalysts were prepared by the impregnation and urea methods. The catalyst prepared by the urea method showed about 11 times higher surface area and finer particle size than that prepared by the impregnation method. The catalysts prepared by the urea method showed higher methane conversion and synthesis gas selectivity than that prepared by the impregnation method. In this reaction, carbon deposition is a problem to be solved, so La was added to the catalyst system to reduce the carbon deposition. TGA analysis results showed that there was 2% carbon deposition with La-added catalysts and 16% with La-free catalysts. It was found that the addition of La decreases the amount of carbon deposition and prevents catalyst deactivation.

This study measured the zeta potential of both latex colloidal particles with carboxylate surface groups and glass beads (collectors) with silanol surface group employing various solution with different chemical characteristics. The results have been compared with the surface chemistry theory. The zeta potential of the particle and collector increased with increasing pH up to 5.0 regardless of the solution chemistry. For a monovalent electrolyte solution(sodium chloride solution) the zeta potential steadily increased until the pH reached 9.5. In contrast, little change in zeta potential was made between 5.0 and 9.5 for a divalent electrolyte solution (sodium chloride solution) the zeta potential steadily increased until the pH reached 9.5. In contrast, little change in zeta potential was made between 5.0 and 9.5 for a divalent electrolyte solution (calcium chloride solution). In other words, the more the pH decreases, the larger the effect of neutral salts, such as NaCl and CaCl$_2$, have on the ζ-potential values. In this study, the PZPC(point of zero proton condition) of the particle and collector occurred below a pH of 3.1, H(sup)+ and OH(sup)- acted as a PDI (potential determining ion), and Na(sup)+ acted as an IDI(indifferent ion). The magnitude of the negative ζ-potential values of the particle and collector monotonically increased as the concentrations of Na(sup)+ or Ca(sup)2+([Na(sup)+] or [Ca(sup)2+]) decreased (the values of pNa or pCa increased). In the case of latex particles, the ζ-potential should aproach zero (isoelectric point; IEP) asymptotically as the pNa approaches zero, while in the case of calcium chloride electrolyte, ζ-potential reversal may be expected to occur around 3.16$\times$10(sup)-2MCaCl$_2$(pCa=1.5). pH, valance and ionic strength can be used in various ways to improve the water treatment efficiency by modifying the charge characteristics of the particle and collector. Predictive capability is far less certain when EDL(electrical double layer) repulsive forces exist between the particle and collector.
This paper deals with the simulation of solid particle coating technology via supersonic nozzle in vacuum environment to devote as an aerosol-deposition device. In order to improve efficiencies of nozzle and coating process, effects of shockwave, nozzle geometry, and substrate location were studied computationally under a fixed chamber pressure of 0.01316 bar which is nearly vacuous. Shockwave is the important factor affect to entire flow because shockwave in the jet flow dissipates the kinetic energy of the flow in the supersonic condition. Results show that various nozzle geometries have significant effect on the supersonic flow and we know that the supersonic nozzle should be optimized to minimize the loss of the flow. Another parameter, the distance between substrate and nozzle tip, shows little effect in this study.
To understand the effects of particle size on sedimentation processes, huydraulic laboratory experiments were conducted using four groups of ssediments: There well-defined sediments of uniform composition and narrow-size distribution, and a fourth group which was a mixture of these three sediments. Entrainment and deposition experiments were performed for each group and sediments with bottom shear stresses of 1~14 dynes/$\textrm{cm}^2$. Inter-comparisons of the experimental results were presented.
To apply diamond films in microelectromechanical systems(MEMS), it is necessary to develop the patterning technologies of diamond films in the micrometer scale. In this paper, three different kinds of technologies for patterning CVD diamond films carried out by us were demonstrated: selective growth by improved diamond nucleation in DC bias-enhanced microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition (MPCVD) system, selective growth of seeding using diamond-particle-mixed photoresist, and selective etching of oxygen ion beam using Al as the mask. It was show that high selectivity and precise patterns had been achieved, and all the processes were compatible with IC process.
In this study, an investigation was conducted to assess the washout mechanism of Asian dust particles through both laboratory-scale experiment and model calculation. To artificially simulate Asian dust particle, $CaCO_3$ particles were generated inside an experimental chamber. They were then scavenged by the artificial rain drops. The abundant $CaCO_3$ particles scavenged on a rain drop were successively identified by SEM observation. The concentrations of Ca in residual $CaCO_3$ particles on individual droplet were quantified by PIXE analysis. There was a tendency toward a high accumulation of Ca on a relatively small drop (e.g., <1.0 mm diameter). It is thus suggested that smaller rain drops can effectively scavenge a significant amount of Asian dust particles in ambient atmosphere. The numerical estimation can account for 92.1% and 83.2% of Ca that were measured in small (<1.0 mm diameter) and large (>2.0 mm diameter) size drops, respectively.
New method and device for the on-line measurement of soot concentration in a diesel engine oil are proposed, where the measurement principle is based mainly on attenuated internal total reflection. The detector were evaluated in various ranges of contaminated oils by carbon black particles. It was found that the proposed detector could be well used to monitor the oil deterioration due to soot contamination. Operational range of the detector was found from 0 to 5 mass percentage of soot content. Test results with water and fuel dilution showed that these effects were not remarkable. However, adsorption of carbon black particles onto the measurement surface was considered to be a critical problem of the detector. Effects of particle deposition on the interface was experimentally evaluated with the oil temperature and flow turbulence and discussed throughout this work.

Supersonic microjets acquire considerable research interest from a fundamental fluid dynamics perspective, in part because the combination of highly compressible flow at low-to-moderate Reynolds number is not very common, and in part due to the complex nature of the flow itself. In addition, microjets have a great variety engineering applications such as micro-propulsion, MEMS (Micro-Electro Mechanical Systems) components, microjet actuators and fine particle deposition and removal. Numerical simulations have been carried out at moderate nozzle pressure ratios and for different nozzle exit diameters to investigate and to understand in-depth of aerodynamic characteristics of supersonic microjets.
We present here an efficient and simple method for preparation of highly active heterogeneous ZnO photocatalyst (graphene oxide-zinc oxide: GO-ZnO), specifically by deposition of ZnO nanoparticles onto thiolated GOs. The resultant GO-ZnO sample was characterized by TEM, XRD, Auger, XPS, and Raman measurements, revealing that the size-similar and quasi-spherical ZnO nanoparticles were anchored to the thiolated GO surfaces. The average particle diameter was about 2.5 nm. In the photodegradation of methylene blue (MB) under ultraviolet (UV) light, GO-ZnO exhibited remarkably enhanced photocatalytic efficiency compared with thiolated GO and pure ZnO particles. This strong photocatalytic performance of GO-ZnO can be attributed to the suppression of electron recombination and the enhancement of mass transportation. The results showed that thiolated GO is the preferable supporting material.
In this work, we report in-situ observations of changes in catalyst morphology, and of growth termination of individual carbon nanotubes (CNTs), by complete loss of the catalyst particle attached to it. The observations strongly support the growth-termination mechanism of CNT forests or carpets by dynamic morphological evolution of catalyst particles induced by Ostwald ripening, and sub-surface diffusion. We show that in the tip-growth mode, as well as in the base-growth mode, the growth termination of CNT by dissolution of catalyst particles is plausible. This may allow the growth termination mechanism by evolution of catalyst morphology to be applicable to not only CNT forest growth, but also to other growth methods (for example, floating-catalyst chemical vapor deposition), which do not use any supporting layer or substrate beneath a catalyst layer.
