  • This paper presents plastic limit loads and approximate J-integral estimates for circumferential part-through surface crack at the interface between elbows and pipes. Based on finite element limit analyses using elastic-perfectly plastic materials, plastic limit moments under in-plane bending are obtained and it is found that they are similar those for circumferential part-through surface cracks in the center of elbow. Based on present FE results, closed-form limit load solutions are proposed. Welds are not explicitly considered and all materials are assumed to be homogeneous. And the method to estimate the elastic-plastic J-integral for circumferential part-through surface cracks at the interface between elbows and straight pipes is proposed based on the reference stress approach, which was compared with corresponding solutions for straight pipes.

  • An upper bound elemental technique(UBET) is applied to predict forging load and die-cavity filling for non-axisymmetric ring forging. The finial product is divided into three different deformation regions. That is axisymmetric part in corner, lateral plane-strain part and shear deformation on boundaries between them. The plane-strain and axisymmetric part are combinded by building block method. Also the total energy is computered through combination of three deformation part. Experiments have been carried out with pure plasticine billets at room temperature. The theoretical predictions of the forging load and the flow pattern are in good agreement with the experimental results.

  • The purpose of this paper is to present the development processes of the assembly line tester of power transmission for lift truck. Because power transmission is most important part of lift truck, all assembled powertrain parts must be inspected for operational defects, pressures and RPM. Developed assembly line tester is designed to take about 25 minutes for inspecting each assembled power transmission and located it at the end of assembled line. The assembly line no-load tester consists of three parts: (1) the driving hardware part; for installing and operating the transmission. (2) control PCB part; send data from sensors to a computer and control driving part, (3) operation software of no-load tester; for an automatic inspection or manual inspection, for database management and printing transcripts.

  • The heavy duty diesel engine must have a large output for maintaining excellent mobility. In this study, a three dimensional finite element model of a heavy-duty diesel engine was developed to conduct the stress analysis. The FE model of the heavy duty diesel engine main parts consisting with four half cylinder was selected. The heavy duty diesel engine parts includes with cylinder block, cylinder head, gasket, liner, bearing cap, bearing and bolts. The loading conditions of engine were pre-fit load, assembly load, and gas load. As the results of structural analysis, because the stress values of cylinder block and bearing cap did not exceed the basic design can be satisfied. But on the part which contacts with cylinder block and bearing cap the stress value exceeds the allowable strength of material. In order to decrease the stress at that part, it was optimized with parametric study.

  • This paper is concerned with the analysis of the forming load characteristics of a forward-backward can extrusion process. The analysis in this paper is extended to the selection of press frame capacity for producing efficiently final product at low cost. The possible extrusion processes to shape a forward-backward can part with different outer diameters are categorized to investigate quantitatively the forming load, forming energy and maximum pressure exerted on the die-material interface. The categorized processes are composed of combined and/or some basic extrusion processes. After the analysis of the forming load characteristics, the frame capacity of press suitable for a selected process could be determined along with securing the load capacity and with considering productivity. In addition, it is also suggested that different load capacities be selected for different dimensions of a part such as the wall thickness in forward direction. The work in this paper could be a good reference for analysis of complex extrusion and selection of proper frame capacity of press to achieve low production cost and thus high productivity.

  • There are several parameters affecting the response of industrial reinforced concrete (RC) chimneys, i.e., the severity of wind and earthquake loads acting to the structure, structural properties such as height and cross section of the chimney, the slenderness property of the structure etc. One of the most important parameter that should be considered while understanding the wind response of industrial RC chimneys is slenderness property. Although there is no certain definition for slenderness effect on these structures, some standards like ASCE-7 define slenderness from different aspects of the structural properties. In the first part of this study, general information about the definition of slenderness in the well-known standards and ten selected industrial RC chimneys are given. In the second part of the study, brief information about wind load standards that are used for calculating wind loads namely ACI 307/98, CICIND 2001, DIN 1056, TS 498 and Eurocode 1 is given. In the third part of the study, calculated wind loads for selected chimneys are represented. In the fourth part of this study, the internal forces obtained from load combinations that are applied to chimneys and some graphs presenting the effect of slenderness on chimneys are given. In the last part of the study, a conclusion and discussion part is taking place.

  • The occurrence of progressive collapse induced by the removal of the vertical load-bearing element in the structure, because of fire or earthquake, has been a significant challenge between structural engineers. Progressive collapse is defined as the complete failure or failure of a part of the structure, initiating with a local rupture in a part of the building and can threaten the stability of the structure. In the current study, the behavior of the structures equipped with a cylindrical friction damper, when the vertical load-bearing elements are eliminated, is considered in two cases: 1-The load-bearing element is removed under the gravity load, and 2-The load-bearing element is removed due to the earthquake lateral forces. In order to obtain a generalized result in the seismic case, 22 pair motions presented in FEMA p 695 are applied to the structures. The study has been conducted using the vertical push down analysis for the case (1), and the nonlinear time-history analysis for the second case using OpenSEES software for 5,10, and 15-story steel frames. Results indicate that, in the first case, the load coefficient, and accordingly the strength of the structure equipped with cylindrical friction dampers are increased considerably. Furthermore, the results from the second case demonstrate that the displacements, and consequently the forces imposed to the structure in the buildings equipped with the cylindrical friction damper substantially was reduced. An optimum slip load is defined in the friction dampers, which permits the damper to start its frictional damping from this threshold load. Therefore, the optimum slip load of the damper is calculated and discussed for both cases.

  • The swirling flow developing in Francis turbine draft tube under part load operation leads to pressure fluctuations usually in the range of 0.2 to 0.4 times the runner rotational frequency resulting from the so-called vortex breakdown. For low cavitation number, the flow features a cavitation vortex rope animated with precession motion. Under given conditions, these pressure fluctuations may lead to undesirable pressure fluctuations in the entire hydraulic system and also produce active power oscillations. For the upper part load range, between 0.7 and 0.85 times the best efficiency discharge, pressure fluctuations may appear in a higher frequency range of 2 to 4 times the runner rotational speed and feature modulations with vortex rope precession. It has been pointed out that for this particular operating point, the vortex rope features elliptical cross section and is animated of a self-rotation. This paper presents an experimental investigation focusing on this peculiar phenomenon, defined as the upper part load vortex rope. The experimental investigation is carried out on a high specific speed Francis turbine scale model installed on a test rig of the EPFL Laboratory for Hydraulic Machines. The selected operating point corresponds to a discharge of 0.83 times the best efficiency discharge. Observations of the cavitation vortex carried out with high speed camera have been recorded and synchronized with pressure fluctuations measurements at the draft tube cone. First, the vortex rope self rotation frequency is evidenced and the related frequency is deduced. Then, the influence of the sigma cavitation number on vortex rope shape and pressure fluctuations is presented. The waterfall diagram of the pressure fluctuations evidences resonance effects with the hydraulic circuit. The influence of outlet bubble cavitation and air injection is also investigated for low cavitation number. The time evolution of the vortex rope volume is compared with pressure fluctuations time evolution using image processing. Finally, the influence of the Froude number on the vortex rope shape and the associated pressure fluctuations is analyzed by varying the rotational speed.
