Temperament of Ethnic Korean Children : A Cross-cultural Analysis (한국 아동의 기질 : 비교문화적 분석)

  • This study analyzed temperament of ethnic Korean children residing in Korea comparing them with Korean children and American children residing in the USA. Parents of 169 Korean, Korean-American and American 4-7-year-old children rated them on the Very Short Form of Children's Behavior Questionnaire (CBQ; Rothbart et al., 2001). On most subscales, Korean children were reported higher than ethnic Korean children in the US while Korean-American children were rated lower than others. Attention focusing was influenced by macro systems; shifting and impulsivity were more sensitive to biological or micro systems. The bilingual setting of Korean-American children may explain the difference in control of this group from others. This study clearly showed that ecological settings play important roles in temperament.

  • Four different backcrossing methods were designed and 23 near isogenic lines (NILs) of 22 linkage groups were obtained using Hb as recurrent parent, the mutant gene lines which held markers as donor parents. Eleven of them had been mated with the recurrent parent for 10 times, and the others for 7∼8 times. The NILs of other 6 linkage groups are under way and had been backcrossed to the recurrent for 3∼4 times. These NILs will act important roles in the construction of molecular linkage map and gene location and positional cloning.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this research is to identify and understand sexuality in 10th grade co-ed students in Seoul, Korea in order to construct practical curriculum for sex education for youth. Method: One-hour class per week was done to the 3 classes among 6 classes for Spring semester in 1999: small group discussion(for 3 classes) & questionnaires(6 classes) were taken. Results: Despite the increased number of sex education programs, peers apparently remain the major source of information and the counselor of their sexual problems. The rate of correct answer of the sex knowledge is still low, especially on biological aspects of opposite sex. Western culture and women's movements have changed our society. In turn, sexual sterotypes and roles have been changing. Small group discussions were taken after the classes of pregnancy, abortion and unmarried parents. Their opinions on maintaining virginity were collected. The condition of choosing spouse and boy/girl friend is quite different in many aspects.

A Study of Relation on the Trends of Juvenile Delinquency and Abnormal Family (소년비행의 동향과 가족병리와의 관계연구)

  • In recent years, behavioral disorders of young people and juvenile delinquency tend to increase remarkably in number, and closed up highly as a social and educational problems in Korea. It goes without saying that parents generally play important roles in children's development of personality, and the home is mostly responsible for juvenile delinquency. Therefore, first this paper describes a relation between broken family and juvenile delinquents. Burt, Shideler, Neumayer, and Glueck maintain that broken family is a cause of delinquency, on the other hand, Healy and Sutherland assume a critical attitude toward their contentions. Second, Breckinridge, Merril, and Glueck maintain that poor family is as cause of delinquency, while Sullenger, Neumayer, and Dirksen make a considerable point which poverty has no direct connection with delinquency. Third, abnormal family relationships namely, discord family, abnormal parent-child relationship, and immoral family exert a bad influence upon formation of personality, esepecialy during the period of preschool childhood. These results give some empirical support to the theory that children's conduct disorders and juvenile delinquency are caused by defective family relationships. It is necessary that a community has a supporting structure of children's wholesome development and the prevention of juvenile delinquency.

  • Objective : Nursing system in traditional society depended on more private service in family than public service. In Chosun dynasty, there were several books mentioned private nursing srvice to author's family. Method : We tried to find out mentions in books above and analyze them by point of nursing services. Result : In Nehoon nursing was considered as a view of royal family services, in Gyenyeoseo as a view of neo-Confucianism, in Gyubanggasa as a view of obedience to parents and in Gyuhapchongseo there were lessons to author's daughter and in-laws about private nursing. Conclusion : In traditional society, women's activities were limited. However, there were several roles, especially private nursing services to their family through this bibliographical records.

  • This study aims to find out the teacher's role in each procedure necessary for math gifted students' independent study so as to help them grow to become more creative experts. The case study targeted 14 gifted students. The result shows that the necessary steps for math gifted students' independent study are as fellowing; introducing the independent study, selecting a topic, asking a question, literature review, choosing a study method, gathering information, analysing information, developing a product, sharing information, evaluating the study, Teachers should teach students necessary skills with plans and take the roles of advisors and facilitators. Especially, for effective independent study, this should be planned and done in a regular program for gifted students; teachers' and parents' interest and encouragement facilitate the students' study process.

The role of de novo variants in complex and rare diseases pathogenesis

  • De novo variants (DNVs) can arise during parental germ cell formation, fertilization, and the processes of embryogenesis. It is estimated that each individual carries 60-100 such spontaneous variants in the genome, most of them benign. However, a number of recent studies suggested that DNVs contribute to the pathogenesis of a variety of human diseases. Applications of DNVs include aiding in clinical diagnosis and identifying disease-causing genetic factors in patients with atypical symptoms. Therefore, understanding the roles of DNVs in a trio, with healthy parents and an affected offspring, would be crucial in elucidating the genetic mechanism of disease pathogenesis in a personalized manner.

A Qualitative Study on Adult Children's Experiences of Parental Bereavement (성인 자녀의 부모 사별 경험에 대한 연구)

  • This research is intended to examine adult children's experiences with parental bereavement and the effect of the experiences on family relationships and their lives. In order to describe the subjects' experiences as they are and understand their meaning and essence, data was analyzed using the Colaizzi method, an approach to phenomenology as a qualitative research methods. The findings showed that subjects suffered from the loss of parents; however, they recovered from their conditions after an ancestor worshiping service. In addition, they took heavy responsibility for a survived parent after bereavement and experienced changes in the roles of family members. In conclusion, experience with parental bereavement caused adult children to reflect on themselves, to discuss the essence of life, and to change the attitudes of their life from a future-oriented perspective to a here-and-now perspective.

  • The purpose of this study is to develope Premarital Relationship Enrichment Program (PREP). This Program was based on survey (416 data used) for the need of PREP. The results was as followings : 1. The object wanted that the curriclumn were included marital values, love and intimacy, communication skill, understanding of personality, good relationship of both parents, adaptation of both families, healthy self-image, sex knowlege, constructive conflict-solving, financial management skill, reasonable decision-making, family planning, marital roles, concrete marriage readiness. 2. They surgested that variety of methods and proposals. 3. Mother-Child Relationship in Female-headed Single Parent Families (여성 한부모가족의 모-자녀관계)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the difficulties, conflicts, and communications between female-headed single parents and their children, their child rearing methods and attitude, and the political suggestions for the welfare in those families. The in-depth interviews were conducted for 7 women in Gyonggi-Do and Chungnam-Do on March 3-27, 2003. The interviewees were selected for the mothers whose children were enrolled either elementary schools or middle schools. The contents of interviews were receded to be analyzed by qualitative method. The results were as follows; first, female-headed single parent families were in low economic status with unstable employment condition. Secondly, women in that families were confronted with psychological problems because of their multiple roles and low income. Third, although they had a controlled child rearing method, they used much reinforcement and praise. Thirdly, they were in need of the aids for the basic life such as housings and their children's private institute expenses. Finally, they required the repealing of an existing birthright system.
