  • This study investigates how naturally occurring parent groups form by using Schaefer's two axes of affection-rejection and autonomy-control, it also aims to verify whether there is a significant difference in the parent groups' emotional expressiveness and children's peer competence. A total of 201 kindergarten children between the age of 3 to 5 and their parents were given a questionnaire in order to investigate parenting attitudes and emotional expression. And children's teachers measured their peer competence. SPSS 18.0 was used and clustering analysis was conducted according to different parenting attitudes. The first fathers' group was named the lacking-affection group, the second was the democratic-reception group, the third was the ignorance group and the last was the rejection group. For mothers' groups, the first was named the rejection group, the second was the autonomous-control group and the third was the reception-respect group. Parents' emotional expressiveness of each group had a considerable difference while there was no significant difference between children's peer competence. This study was dedicated in deriving meaningful implications on the role of parents by investing the differences between each naturally occurring cluster.

  • To examine the parenting experiences of North Korean parents in South Korea, seven parents(a father, a grandmother and five mothers) were interviewed about their parenting beliefs, attitudes and behaviors. It was found that parents from North Korea felt a safe existence including safety from hunger in South Korea but they were afraid of the many cars and unfamiliar diseases in South Korea. They had many difficulties with unfamiliar child rearing practices and parental roles in South Korea. Their confusion about good parenting was compounded by psychological and physical after-effects of the escape from their native country. They found help in adjusting to parenting in South Korea by such social networks as child care centers.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate parenting attitudes and to identify factors influencing this parenting attitude in mothers of children with hemophilia. Method: The participants in this study were 119 mothers of children with hemophilia (under 18 years of age) who were registered members of the Korea Hemophilia Foundation. Data were collected using the Mother-Infant Attachment Scale, Maternal Guilt Scale and Parenting Attitude Scale. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS program. Results: The parenting attitude was 3.02 (total possible score=4). By subcategories, achievement attitude was the highest (3.45). Of the factors influencing parenting attitudes, mother-child attachment, maternal guilt and self-esteem account for 45.6% of the variance. Conclusion: The findings of this study show that attitudes of parents of children with hemophilia were positive. As mother-child attachment and maternal guilt were identified as major factors in predicting parenting attitudes, there is a need to consider interventions that will increase mother-child attachment and decrease maternal guilt.

  • Objectives: Adolescent suicide, a major cause of adolescent death, is affected by various factors, including attitudes toward suicide. This study investigated the association between parenting style and adolescents' attitudes toward suicide and the mediating role of attitude toward suicide between parenting style and suicidal ideation. Methods: We surveyed 1,071 adolescents from eight middle schools in Incheon, Korea. The survey included sociodemographic information, attitudes toward suicide, perception of parenting style, depression severity, and suicidality. Results: Students in the authoritarian parenting group had a more permissive attitude toward suicide compared with the democratic and permissive parenting groups. These students considered that suicide is justified in certain situations and that choosing suicide is an individual's right. They also had a negative attitude toward talking about suicide or intervening in others' suicide. This association remained statistically significant after adjusting for the impact of confounding factors that could affect attitudes toward suicide, except for suicidal processes and preparedness to prevent suicide. In the mediation analysis, we observed that some factors of the attitudes toward suicide mediated between authoritarian parenting attitudes and suicidal ideation, namely, suicide as a right, preventability, suicide as normal/common, preparedness to prevent suicide, and resignation. Conclusion: This study revealed the significant impact of parenting style on children's attitudes toward suicide. Educating parents about the appropriate parenting attitudes-sympathetic and rational-can help prevent youth suicide.

  • The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of economic hardship. parents'intro-eatrovert personality, and depression on parenting. The subjects were 487 seventh to ninth grade children and their parents. Data were collected through questionnaires. Children from which family experienced severe income loss perceived fathers'child-rearing attitudes as more warm/nurturant when fathers had extrovert personality. On the other hand, children under the worse paternal working condition perceived mothers'child-rearing attitudes as more warm/nurturant when mothers had introvert personality. The impacts of family income loss on mothers'rejecting/inconsistant child-rearing attitudes were exacerbated by its indirect effect through maternal depression.

  • Having developed a parent education program for guidance of internet-using children, we evaluated the effectiveness of this program. The program consisted of five two-hour sessions. It was test-run with nineteen participants, which included mothers of elementary school children. In the evaluation of the program, we employed so-called 'pretest-posttest control group design' which compares the difference in the parenting sense of competence, parents' sense of role satisfaction, parents' sense of insecurity, and parents' rearing attitudes between the experimental group and the control group. Program evaluation revealed that the parenting sense of competence and role satisfaction increased in the group that participated in the program compared to the non-participating group. Furthermore, the parents' sense of insecurity decreased and democratic rearing attitudes were fostered in the participating group.
