  • Depressive symptoms are one of the biggest mental health issues among Korean American adolescents. Previous studies have found that parental warmth and intergenerational family conflict have a major impact on depressive symptoms among Korean American adolescents. This cross-sectional study examines the mediation effects of intergenerational family conflict between perceived parental warmth and depressive symptoms among 97 Korean American adolescents aged 14 to 18 years old in the Pacific Northwest region. The results revealed that 60% of participants experienced depressive symptoms. In addition, mother-adolescent conflict significantly mediated between perceived parental warmth and depressive symptoms while father-adolescent conflict did not significantly mediate. The finding suggests the need to develop intervention programs for Korean American adolescents and their parents that focus on creating an understanding of the difference between Korean culture and American culture, identifying early signs of depressive symptoms, and decreasing intergenerational family conflict by teaching parents to express parental warmth effectively.

  • This study was aimed at examining the paths through which family socioeconomic status as indicated by family income and parental education influenced preschool-aged children's socioemotional and cognitive development through the mediating role of parental warmth and the home learning environment. The study made use of data from 1,080 families who participated in the 5th wave of the Panel Study on Korean Children, when their children were approximately 4 years of age. Structural equation modeling analysis revealed that the models, including both parental warmth and the home learning environment did not fit the data well. The effects of warmth on social competence and cognitive development were not statistically significant. The modified models, using the home learning environment as a mediator between family SES and child's developmental outcomes showed that higher level of family income and parental education predicted a more cognitively stimulating home environment, which in turn, predicted a child's greater levels of social competence and positive cognitive development. The social competence of preschool-aged children again significantly predicted their cognitive development. The mediating effects of the home learning environment were statistically supported.

  • Data were collected from 514 elementary school students from 1st to 6th grade with questionnaires on Parental Behavior, Bullying, and Peer-Victimization. Sixth graders reported the lowest perception of warmth-acceptance, and 1st graders reported the highest perception of rejection-restriction by fathers. Males perceived more parental rejection-restriction. Children perceived more warmth-acceptance from mothers, and they perceived more permissiveness-nonintervention from fathers. Parenting behaviors were significantly related to bullying and victimization. The Bullying/Victimization group reported the lowest parental warmth-acceptance. Both Victimization and Bullying/Victimization groups showed higher parental rejection-restriction than other groups. The Victimization group showed highest paternal permissiveness-nonintervention. Victimization and Bullying/Victimization groups reported higher maternal permissiveness-nonintervention than other groups.

  • The Purpose of this study was to examine how children's perceptuions of parental childrearing behaviors and family support were related to their interpersonal problem-solving behaviors. 580 subjects of the 5th 6th grades filled out questionnaires concerning the three research variables. The data were analyzed through correlation analyses and regression analyses. The results were as follows: The significant correlations were found between parental warmth·acceptance and children's interpersonal problem-solving behavior and between family support and problem-solving behaviors. Problem-solving behaviors showed higher correlations with maternal warmths·acceptance than paternal behaviors and with opposite-sex parents behaviors than with same-sex parents behaviors. Family support predicted children's social problem-solving behaviors better than parental warmth·acceptance especially among boys.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between children's self-efficacy, parental child-rearing attitude perceived by the child, and creativity. The study subjects were 120 5th and 6th graders at elementary school in Gyeongbuk. The instruments of measurement were question sheets, Self-Efficacy Scale, and Parental child-rearing attitude Scale. For creative thinking tests, the Kim Yong-Chae version of TTCT (Torrance Test of Creative Thinking) was used. The data were analysed through mean, standard deviation, frequency, percentile, Cronbach's $\alpha$, and Pearson's Correlation Coefficient. The major findings of this study were as follows: First, the results from the correlational analysis didn't yield significant and meaningful correlations between children's self-efficacy and thinking creatively with words. Nevertheless, children's self-efficacy was partly related to thinking creatively with pictures. Second, the results from the correlational analysis didn't yield significant and meaningful correlations between warmth vs. rejection altitude of father and thinking creatively with words. Warmth vs. rejection attitudes of father was not related to thinking creatively with pictures. However, the results from the correlational analysis yielded a number of significant and meaningful correlations between self-control vs. regulation attitudes of father and the thinking creatively with words. The self-control vs. regulation attitudes of father was significantly positively related to the thinking creatively with pictures. Third, the warmth vs. rejection attitudes of mother was significantly positively related to the thinking creatively with words. However the warmth vs. rejection attitudes of mother was not related significantly to the thinking creatively with pictures. The self-control vs. regulation attitudes of mother was not related to the thinking creatively with words. Moreover, self-control vs. regulation attitudes of mother was not related to the thinking creatively with pictures.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine, according to sex and grade, the relationship and difference between mothers' parenting attitudes and self-perceived competences of their children. 197 children of the 4th through the 6th grade were selected from an elementary school in Daejeon area. We used the Perceived Competence Scale for Children (Harter, 1982) to measure their self-perceived competence and the Mother's Parenting Attitudes Scale (1990, Lee & Park) to measure parenting attitudes of their mothers. Major findings are as follows: First, there were significant differences in the children's self-perceived competence according to their perception of parental warmth and control. Children with more perception of parental warmth and consistent control considered themselves higher in cognitive and social competences and in self-worth. Boys perceived higher mother's consistent control and positive participation in parenting-attitudes than girls. Girls perceived themselves higher than boys in global self-worth. Next, Out of the three grades the 4th graders indicated more perception of attachment, authoritarian control, and positive participation in parenting attitudes. There was statistically no difference in self-perceived competences of children according to their grades. Finally, there were correlations between mothers' parenting attitudes and perceived competences of their children. Children with more perception of parental warmth, attachment, positive participation, and consistent control showed higher level of physical competence, social competence, and global self-worth.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate how parental childrearing behavior and children's sibling relationships are related to children's self-esteem. 440 middle class families consisting of two children and their parents were the subjects of this study. The research instruments included a childrearing behavior questionnaire, the Sibling Relationships Questionnaire (Furman & Buhrmester, 1985), and the Self-Perception Profile for Children (Harter, 1985). Analyses of the data included correlation analysis, canonical correlation, regression, stepwise multiple regression, and MANOVA with stepwise discriminant analysis as the follow-up test. The most powerful predictors of children's self-esteem were the Warmth-Acceptance of childrearing behavior and the Warmth-Closeness of sibling relationships. The self-esteem dimension was best predicted by parental childrearing behavior and by children's sibling relationships was Global Self-Worth. Behavioral Conduct was best predicted by the Rejection-Restriction factor of childrearing, and by Conflict (for boys) and Rivalry (for girls) factors of sibling relationships. Children's self-esteem was related more strongly to the Warmth-Acceptance and the Rejection-Restriction of opposite-sex parents. The effects of Permissiveness-Nonintervention were stronger in same-sex parent-child dyads. Parental childrearing behaviors accounted for boy's self-esteem better than girl's with the exception of Behavioral Conduct. Sibling relationships accounted for girl's self-esteem better than boy's. The $2{\times}2$ MANOVA revealed interaction effects of parental childrearing behaviors and sibling relationships on children's self-esteem. Two factors of Rivalry and Conflict in sibling relationships and all three factors of childrearing behaviors showed significant interaction effects, The childrearing factor of Permissiveness-Nonintervention and the sibling factor of Rivalry, which were relatively weak predictors of self-esteem when acting alone, gained power in explaining children's self-esteem within the interactional context.
