Purpose: As a result of dramatic advances in the medical and surgical management of congenital heart disease (CHD), many babies born with cardiac anomalies today can expect to reach adulthood. The main purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between parenting stress and personal resources of mothers of children with CHD. Method: Fifty-one mothers of children with CHD were recruited at the pediatric cardiac outpatient clinic from July 14th to September 25th 2006. Abidin's parenting stress index/short form (PSI/SF) and Brandt and Weinert's personal resource questionnaire (PRQ) were used. PSI has 3 sub-concepts; parental role distress, dysfunctional parent-child interaction, and difficult child. PRQ has 4 sub-concepts; intimacy, social integration, worth, and assistance. Data were analyzed using SPSS 13.0 version. Results: Correlation analysis showed that parenting stress was significantly related to 'intimacy', 'social integration', and 'worth' of mothers. Multiple regression analysis showed that parenting stress was significantly related to personal resource of mother and information by internet. Conclusion: Mothers who felt they had supportive friends and family, high self esteem, and social integration reported lower parenting stress. Also, internet may be an effective method to provide information and share experience for mothers of children with CHD.
The main purpose of this study was to examine the relations of children's shyness and maternal involvement in children's peer relations to children's social competence, and the relative influence of children's shyness and maternal involvement in children's peer relations on children's social competence. 195 mothers of 3-year-olds and their 13 teachers in Seoul and Gyeonggi province participated in the study. The data were obtained using three kinds of questionnaires regarding shyness, parental involvement, and social competence. Findings revealed that shy children showed less popularity leadership and social participation for both boys and girls. The more orchestrations mothers exerted, the more popularity leadership boys showed. And the more advice and support mothers provided, the more interpersonal adjustment girls showed. For boys, shyness was more influential on popularity leadership than maternal orchestrations were. Findings are discussed in terms of the role of shyness in children's early social competence for both boys and girls.
In this study, unwed mothers residing in nine residental facilities were surveyed by questionnaires. Those facilities were selected from national welfare facilities officially registered for single-parent families in 2011. The selected facilities were two places in Seoul, six places in Gyeonggi Province and one place in Chungcheong Province. The surveyed data were analyzed by statistical methods such as frequency, percentage, one way ANOVA, chi-square test and t-test, binary logistic regression using SPSS ver.17.0 program. As a result, their decision of adoption or self-nurture on their child was significantly affected by various factors. Among pregnancy-related factors, pregnancy recognition time was significantly different between two groups. Among personal factors, their age and cognition of parental role were important factors to differentiate two groups. In the analysis related with social resources, the self-nurture group had significantly higher experience and satisfaction on welfare service and lodging & boarding service compared to those of the adoption-choice group.
The purpose of this research was to analyze scolding experiences of three parents with children of same gender. For this research, a narrative inquiry was used as the research method. The research results showed that scolding toward children and scolding from parents resembled each other while the experiences of the three parents regarding scolding were revealed as the following four larger themes and three smaller themes: mimicking the scolding of their parents (taking on the parental role toward the projected, internal self of the past, acceptance of familiarity, providing a safety fence to the children), transforming the scolding of their parents, projecting the unsolved task of parenting to children, beginning to transform and evolve scolding, and cautious practice within daily living. In the discussion, methods for transforming and evolving scolding based on experiences of the three parents regarding scolding were studied, while research on parents scolding children with differing genders and how positive experience such as praising, encouragement, and support, from parents reemerged within children are suggested.
In orthodontic field, although lots of new materials have been developed and many mechanics intro duced, we can face the case patient cooperation still remain a problem to solve. So, factors related to the compliance of 254 adolescent orthodontic patients using intraoral elastic or extraoral orthopedic appliances were under investigation. The study subjects were 11 to 18 years old and from 5 exclusive orthodontitc clinics in seoul. The subjects were asked to fill a questionnaire and compliances were evaluated by their assigned orthodontists. The questionnaire was consisted of 63 questions, and they represent 13 factors-7 psychological & 6 nonpsychological fators. The collected data were analyzed using ANOVA test between the compliance group and the factors. 1. The compliances were evenly distributed in both sex and age groups. 2. As a whole, it was found that the Attitude towards appliances ffactor affected the degree of compliance. 3. Besides that, in younger(11-12) age group, Pain and discomfort associated with treatment factor was also found to be related to the degree of compliance. 4. On the contrary, in older(16-18) age group, the degree of compliance was influenced by the factor of Achievement motivation, Role expectation, parental relationship.
This study recognizes the changes of the father's role and the importance of family mealtimes as well as examines the individual, family and social contexts surrounding the father's family mealtime. This study analyzed the trend of the father's family mealtime frequency and factors affecting them in order to explore the current conditions of their father's work and family balance through family mealtimes. Data from 492 fathers who have school aged children were collected through an online survey. The overall trend of the frequency of father's family meals showed an average of 2.4 breakfasts and an average of 3.2 dinners per week. The frequency of the father's family meals showed statistically significant differences according to the father's age, children's school age, dual income, weekly working hours, working flexibility, leaving on-time and the priority of work and family. The analysis of hierarchical linear regressions was conducted to determine factors affecting the frequency of father's family mealtime to show that the frequency of father's family mealtime was best explained by father's working conditions and perception variables. Working conditions such as working hours, leaving work on time, working flexibility were significant variables in regards to the father's family mealtime frequency. The father's perception towards parental efficacy, wife's support, and work-family priority were significant factors in regards to the father's family mealtime frequency. This study is meaningful in that it provides basic data on policy making for the compatibility of the father's work and family.
Stromata of the white root rot fungus, Rosellinia necatrix, were produced on diseased roots although they were reported to develop rarely in nature. Forty-two (42) out of 47 samples produced synnemata while 23 developed stromata. Forty-seven (47) isolates obtained from diseased root samples were divided into 24 mycelium compatibility groups (MCGs). Sixteen (16) out of 24 MCGs produced stromata. Single ascospore isolates from 10 stroma samples produced dsRNA-containing isolates from diseased tissue beneath stromata. The frequency of synnema production on axenic culture varied among isolates with different origin. The dsRNA was not transmitted vertically to the ascospore offspring despite the infection of various dsRNA in the parental isolates. The dsRNA was absent in 35 ascospore isolates in two stroma samples that originated from the isolates, in which dsRNA was not eliminated by hyphal tip isolation. Consequently, sexual reproduction in the white root rot fungus was suggested to produce propagules as a new infection source and to have the function to eliminate infectious factors such as mycoviruses.
The purpose of this study was the development of the parenting stress scale, necessary to understand the details of the difficulties for a working mother having children from infant to preschooler. Relevant works were reviewed to collect 44 items for the questionnaire from the previous researchs, and additional 34 are combined as a set of measure items. The 78 items were analyzed for the fitness of structure based on the chi-square test and Cramer's V coefficients, and 35 were selected as a final set for the questionnaire. Further factor analysis on the 35 items showed that they could be selected 32 items of the 35 item scale and composed of 3 subscales; namely, the first factor(12 items) as‘typical stress due to the parenting’, the second(12 items) as‘pressures pertaining to the parental role and distress’, and the third(8 items) as’guilty to the parenting by others’. This final questionnaire composed of 32 items was also tested for the concurrent validity based on Pearson's correlation with Goldberg's General Health Questionnaire (GHQ), which is a well-known index to represent the socio-psychological stress. The correlation factor is .41(p<.001), which justifies the fitness of the newly designed questionnaire. To find the confidence level, the Cronbach α was evaluated, which results .88 for the overall questionnaire and ranges between .76 and .82 for each subcale. This parenting scale can be also utilized as a measure to exploit proper programs for the parent-child relations, parent education and rehabitilation of the family function.
This study was designed to identify the relation between the perceived family support and social adjustment of discharged patients with chronic mental illnesses. The subjects for this study were 50 patients with chronic mental illnesses receiving out-patient treatment at one general hospital and one private hospital in Seoul. The data were collected during the period from April 25, 1991 to May 27, 1991. The perceived family support was measured by the Family Support Scale developed by Hyun Sook Kang. A questionnaire which was developed by Weissman was modified by the author of this study to measure the Social Adjustment. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and Pearson Correlation Coefficients, using the SPSS program. The results of this study can be summarized as following ; 1) For the perceived family support, the mean was 2.63 points and the source of family support was almost always the mother. 2) For the social adjustment level, the mean was 2.62 points, and the results showed the best social adjustment was in the area of parental role and family adjustment, and the poorer adjustment was in the area of work and leisure. 3) The relationship between the perceived family support and social adjustment revealed a significant correlation.(r=.38, p<.05) Therefore the hypothesis “the higher the level of perceived family support, the higher the social adjustment level” was accepted. In conclusion, the study revealed that family support is an important factor related to the social adjustment level in patients with chronic mental illnesses.
This ethnographic case-study explores the daily experiences in child-rearing and education among Korean full-time housewives. For this purpose, 11 full-time housewives in their thirties and forties from the middle class were interviewed with an unstructured questionnaire. The findings are as follows: Full-time housewives tend to assume the full responsibility for child-caring and education. Their time is structured around the schedules of caring children and participating in educational programs for children. The most demanding tasks for them include preparing for a preschool, getting the children ready for school, rendering supports for children's schools, extra curricular education, and arranging and offering gift money to teachers. They feel that their husbands do not provide enough supports for child-caring and education. Despite all the negative experiences, Korean full-time housewives put in whatever they have to make sure their children's well-being and to provide the best education possible for their children; the maternal identity plays a role of the utmost importance in them.
