This study examined which factors influence the parental borrowing for children's college education in the U.S. A double-hurdle model was applied to analyze both the parents’decision to borrow and the amount of borrowing. Parents’income and total costs of college attendance had significant positive effects on both the decision to borrow and the amount borrowed. Students’income, parents’cash and savings had significant negative impacts on the amount borrowed, while home equity and the students’expected future income were significant positive factors. Greater amounts of grants significantly increased the probability of borrowing, but reduced the loan amount. Parents with smaller household size, and those who were college graduates were more likely to borrow. White parents borrowed greater amounts than did their non-White counterparts. The age of the student was a significant negative factor in the probability, as well as the level, of borrowing.
This study was aimed at investigating the gender differences in the relationships among parental attachment, educational gender egalitarianism, and achievement motivation in university students in Korea. A total of 338 students from the Seoul and Kyungnam areas participated in this study. The results found that male students showed lower levels of mother attachment and educational egalitarianism and higher levels of achievement motivation compared to female students. For female students, parental attachment and educational egalitarianism were significantly correlated with achievement motivation; however, no such relationships were detected in male students. For male students, social and demographic variables were more predictive of achievement motivation than attachment or educational egalitarianism.
Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) such as infantile colic, constipation and colic occur in almost half of the infants. The aim of this paper is to provide a critical and updated review on the management of FGIDs and their impact on the health of the infant and family to health care physicians. Guidelines and expert recommendations were reviewed. FGIDs are a frequent cause of parental concern, impairment in quality of life of infants and relatives, and impose a financial burden to families, health care, and insurance. Therefore, primary management of the FGIDs should be focused on improving the infants' symptoms and quality of life of the family. If more than parental reassurance is needed, available evidence recommends nutritional advice as it is an effective strategy and most of the time devoid of adverse effects. The role of healthcare providers in reassuring parents and proposing the correct behavior and nutritional intervention by avoiding inappropriate use of medication, is essential in the management of FGIDs.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to construct a model to explain the parenting satisfaction associated with the role transition of older mothers with preschool children. Methods: The participants of this study were mothers of 3- to 6-year-old children who gave birth after 35 years of age, and were drawn from 16 child care centers and 8 kindergartens in 4 administrative districts of B city. Data were analyzed using SPSS for Windows version 22.0 and AMOS for Windows version 22.0. Results: Parental stress, mother-child interactions, parental beliefs regarding personality, and socioeconomic status (income, education, and occupation) had direct effects on parenting satisfaction. Social support also showed direct and indirect effects. Among the sub factors of child temperament, sociability had a significant effect. These variables explained 57.4% of the variation in parenting satisfaction. Conclusion: The results of this study will contribute to the development of effective programs to enhance the parenting satisfaction of older mothers, and will help older mothers through the role transition necessary for the growth of their children.

This study examined the relationship among preschoolers' temperament, parenting sense of competence, and mothers' parenting behavior. It also examined the mediating effects of parenting sense of competence on the relationship between preschoolers' temperament and mothers' parenting behavior. A total of 155 mothers with preschoolers aged 3 to 4(83 boys and 72 girls), living in Seoul, participated in this study. The mothers completed questionnaires designed to measure preschoolers' temperament, parenting sense of competence, and mothers' parenting behavior. The results indicated that preschoolers' temperament and mothers' parenting sense of competence were significantly related to warmth/acceptance and rejection/restriction. Additionally, preschoolers' temperament was significantly related to parental efficacy and dissatisfaction. Furthermore, parenting sense of competence mediated the relationship between preschoolers' temperament and mothers' parenting behavior. In particular, it was found that parental efficacy fully mediated the relationship between preschoolers' activity level and mothers' rejection/restriction. These findings imply that improving mothers' parenting sense of competence needs to be emphasized in designing prevention and intervention programs aimed at enhancing mothers' positive parenting behavior.

Objective : The purpose is to analyze the effects of parent training interventions in reducing the symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and to provide a basis for the effects. Methods : We collected literature published in international academic journals from 2009 to 2019 through ProQuest and Scopus databases. The search key terms were (ADHD OR Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) AND (Parent OR Mother OR Father) AND (Training OR Program OR Therapy OR Intervention) AND (Randomized OR Randomised OR Randomly). The PEDro scale was used to evaluate the quality of the studies, and a meta-analysis was conducted through Comprehensive Meta-Analysis 3.0. Results : Of 628 studies that we reviewed, 20 were eligible for inclusion. of parental training interventions for children with ADHD appeared close to a medium effect size while parent-child interventions (0.639) appeared to have a medium to large effect size. Oppositional defiant behavior and conduct disorder (0.737) in children and children's emotions (0.679) appeared close to a large effect size. ADHD symptoms hyperactivity and impulsivity (0.590) and child behavior (0.521) appeared to be over a medium effect size. We chose a random-effects model since heterogeneity tests showed significant results. Conclusion : We were able to confirm the effects of parent training interventions on the symptoms of children with ADHD. This will be used as evidence to provide a clinical basis for occupational therapists. More research related to parental training interventions should be carried out to ensure better reporting in the future.
The purpose of this study was to explore the concurrent and lagged effects of parental neglect and abuse on longitudinal changes in late childhood school adjustment. This study utilized survey data from the fourth through seventh iterations of the Korean Child Youth Panel Study conducted on fourth-year elementary school students through first-year middle school students. The data was analyzed using latent growth modeling. The results were as follows. First, the level of school adjustment decreased gradually. Second, both neglect and abuse had concurrent effects on school adjustment. Third, neglect had lagged effects on school adjustment but abuse did not. The paper discusses the implications of these results. The results of this study can be used to better understand and support children who have suffered neglect or abuse adjust to school during late childhood.
The purpose of this study is to examine the pathways of factors that influence adolescent's suicidal ideation of suicide attempters and non-attempters and to compare path coefficients between the two groups. Results from simultaneous analysis of multiple populations suggest that the path model was appropriate for both groups. However, significant differences in path coefficients were found. Parental abuse and peer victimization had direct effects on adolescent's suicidal ideation only among the adolescent suicide non-attempters. Burdensomeness and hopelessness had direct effects on adolescent's suicidal ideation, whereas thwarted belongingness did not have direct effects for both groups. Peer victimization appear to have an indirect effect through burdensomeness for both groups of adolescents. Only among the adolescent suicide non-attempters, parental abuse had an indirect effect on suicidal ideation through burdensomeness, and burdensomeness and thwarted belongingness had indirect effects on suicidal ideation through hopelessness. The results indicate that differentiated approaches are required to prevent suicidal ideation for adolescent suicide attempters and non-attempters.

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether or not loneliness affects the relationship between parental psychological control and SNS addiction tendency as well as smartphone game addiction in male and female middle-school students. The subjects were 259 male and female adolescents enrolled in A region Province (134 male and 125 female students). The results are as follows. First, the relationship between loneliness and SNS poisoning tendency was positively correlated with loneliness and SNS poisoning tendency in males, whereas there was no significant correlation in females. In addition, the relationship between parental psychological control and smartphone game addiction was positively correlated with psychological control by parents and smartphone game addiction in female students, whereas there was no significant correlation in males. Second, the relationship between parents' psychological control and SNS addiction depending on the level of loneliness did not significantly change between both male and female middle-school students. Third, as a result of examining the relationship between parental psychological control and smartphone game addiction in male and female middle-school students according to degree of loneliness, only male students showed a moderating effect. Finally, the limitations of this study and suggestions for follow-up studies were discussed.

The aim of this study was to investigate difference of child's dental fear and agreement between parent/child dyads according to parental rearing style. The subjects were 801 children aged 8 and 11-year old and their parents in Jeonju city. The parents were asked to answer a questionnaire which included four parental rearing style and the Children's Fear Survey Schedule - Dental Subscale(CFSS-DS) at home. Also, the CFSS-DS was completed by 8 and 11 years old children in a classroom. Authoritative, permissive, authoritarian and neglectful parenting styles were 53.4%, 45.8%, 0.2% and 0.6% respectively. Authoritative and permissive parents reported 5.7 and 7.5 points higher than dental fear scores reported by their children. At 8 years old, children of authoritative parents were significantly 3.9 points higher than them of permissive parents(p = 0.002). Also, parent/child dyads showed moderate agreement assessing dental fear at aged 8. Parenting styles are related to children's dental fear, and especially 8-year-old girls in authoritative parenting styles have the highest dental fear. However, as age increased, the impact of parental styles on children's dental fear decreased.
