  • We investigate nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment on ion-beam exposed ZnO films. ZnO is optically transparent material in the visible range. We optimized the deposition parameters such as deposition temperature and gas ratio for high transmittance and resistivity. Using ion-beam treated ZnO films, LC cells are fabricated and the conditions such as exposure energy and time for uniform alignment are found. The NLC molecules align parallel to the ion-beam exposure direction. The electro-optic and response characteristics show the possibility of application of this method in liquid crystal display.

  • The cold hollow cathode gas ion source is under development for multi aperture focused ion beam (FIB) system. In this paper, we describe the cold hollow cathode ion source design and the general ion source performance using Ar gas. The glow discharge characteristics and the ion beam current density at various operation conditions are investigated. This ion source can generate maximum ion beam current density of approximately 120 mA/$cm^2$ at ion beam potential of 10 kV. In order to effectively transport the energetic ions generated from the ion source to the multi-aperture focused ion beam(FIB) system, the einzel lens system for ion beam focusing is designed and evaluated. The ions ejected from the ion source can be forced to move near parallel to the beam axis by adjusting the potentials of the einzel lenses.

  • A full-scale simulation of steel mill reheating furnace was performed by using parallel computing technology. Turbulent flow as well as chemical reaction is considered and solved in a coupled manner while radiation is also calculated. The movement of slab is taken into account so that a more precise observation of its heating characteristics becomes possible through this numerical analysis.

  • multi-beam optical drive is a method to improve the data transfer rate for the optical disc systems by parallel recording and reading on neighboring multi-tracks. In this paper, the beam rotating actuator, which is necessary for the multi-bean optical disc drive to from beam spots on multi-tracks simultaneously, has been developed. The Voice Coil Motor is used as a drive mechanism for high resolution and small size of the actuator. And rotating guide based on link structure is designed for frictionless and axisless rotation of rotating part including dove prism and for rotating in axis of geometric center of dove prism. The characteristics of the actuator are experimented by laser vibrometer, Polytec OFV1102 and a dynamic analyzer, HP35670A. It shows that the actuator has good linearity, rotating range $\pm0.34^\circ$, minimum rotating angle $0.0066^\circ$and natural frequency 113.9Hz. Therefore the actuator can be applied in a multi-beam optical disc system.

  • In this research, an active vibration suppression of a smart beam having piezoelectric sensor and actuators is investigated by designing separate controllers comprising a linear quadratic regulator and a neural network. Firstly, design of a smart beam which consists of a cantilever aluminum beam with surface bonded piezoelectric patches and a designed mechanism having a micro servomotor with a mass attached arm for obtaining variations in the frequency response function are presented. Secondly, the frequency response functions of the smart beam are investigated experimentally by using different piezoelectric patch combinations and the analytical models of the smart beam around its first resonance frequency region for various servomotor arm angle configurations are obtained. Then, a linear quadratic regulator controller is designed and used to simulate the suppression of free and forced vibrations which are performed both in time and frequency domain. In parallel to simulations, experiments are conducted to observe the closed loop behavior of the smart beam and the results are compared as well. Finally, active vibration suppression of the smart beam is investigated by using a linear controller with a neural network based adaptive element which is designed for the purpose of overcoming the undesired consequences due to variations in the real system.

  • There has been much effort to find suitable methods for structural analysis in the mid-frequency region where traditional low frequency methods have increasing uncertainties whilst statistical energy analysis is not strictly applicable. Systems consisting of relatively stiff beams coupled to flexible plates have a particularly broad mid-frequency region where the beams support only a few modes whilst the plate has a high modal density and modal overlap. A system of two parallel beams coupled to a plate is investigated based on the wave method, which is an approximate method. Muller's method is utilised for obtaining complex roots of a dispersion wave equation, which does not converge in the conventional wave method based on a simple iteration. The wave model is extended from a single-beam-plate system, to a plate with two identical beams which is modelled using a symmetric-antisymmetric technique. The important hypothesis that the coupled beam wavenumber is sufficiently smaller than the plate free wavenumber is experimentally verified. Finally, experimental results such as powers and energy ratios show the validity of the analytical wave models.

  • Laser diode is used as a crucial part for minimization of terrestrial 3D Laser Scanner. But it has certain limitations such as oval beam shape and inevitable astigmatism. In order to realize a parallel light with beam divergence below 1 mrad, These problems of laser diode can be solved through beam shaping by Pinhole and Aperture. Finally, this study could materialize a collimated beam with 0.3 mrad beam divergence angle and 3mm diameter, that performance and checked by using real manufacture.

  • It is the intention of this study to synthesize the effects of double-edge cracks on the dynamic characteristics of a beam. The stiffness matrix is first determined for a Timoshenko beam containing two same-line edge cracks. The presented model is then developed for elements with two parallel double-sided cracks, considering the interaction between the stress fields of adjacent cracks. Finally, a finite element code is implemented, to examine the influence of depth and location of double cracks, on the natural frequencies of the damaged system.

  • In this paper, a microstrip $18\times2$ dual beam array antenna is designed at 10 GHz. The radiating element is an aperture-coupled patch, and it is analyzed by the transmission line model. The feed is a tapered parallel-series type to reduce the side lobe level. To obtain dual beam at $\pm45^{\circ}$, The difference in phase excitation between the elements is $180^{\circ}$. In conclusion, the side lobe level is 25 dB, and the beam width $8^{\circ}$with two main lobes at $\pm44.5^{\circ}$.

  • In response to the current situation where general methods cannot effectively compensate for the phase delay of ordinary optical mixers, a multi-layer spatial beam-splitting optical mixer is designed using total reflection triangular prisms and polarization beam splittings. The phase delay is generated by the wave plate, and the mixer can use the existing parallel plates in the structure to individually compensate for the phase of the four output beams. A mixer model is established based on the structure, and the influence of the position and orientation of the optical components on the phase delay is analyzed. The feasibility of the phase compensation method is simulated and analyzed. The results show that the mixer can effectively compensate for the four outputs of the optical mixer over a wide range. The mixer has a compact structure, good performance, and significant advantages in phase error control, production, and tuning, making it suitable for free-space coherent optical communication systems.
