A mill trial was performed in a kraft paper mill in order to evaluate the possibility of utilizing dual polymer dry strength aids system consisting of cationic PVAm and anionic PAM. It was found that the cationic PVAm - anionic PAM dry strength additives can improve paper strength without significantly disturbing the stability of the kraft papermaking process when virgin UKP was used as a furnish. Tensile strength (25.3% in machine direction, 48.4% in cross machine direction), elongation of paper (31.6%, 15.6%) and tensile energy absorption (48%, 54%) were improved. Air permeability of the kraft paper was improved as well (22%). Tear strength was decreased with PVAm dry strength aids system, but it can be compensated with decreasing refining degree. In addition, the mill trial results indicate that highly air permeable kraft sack paper can be produced by the addition of PVAm dry strength agents at the stock with reduced freeness.

Recently, the use of recycled fibers was increased in order to replace the virgin pulp for low production cost and forest conservation. However, the recycled fibers decreases drainage rate, papermaking efficiency and product quality by short fibers and low wettability because of hornification. To overcome the limitation of low drainage rate, the technology of organic fillers were applied. Wooden fillers gave high bulk and stiffness of paper, but they reduced the strength of paper. In order to improve strength properties 4 types of strength additives were added and analyzed. Cationic starch, branched strength additive, linear wet strength additive, and linear dry strength additive were used. The drainage rate and paper properties such as bulk, air permeability and tensile strength were measured. As results of analysis, addition of branch type of strength agent such as C-starch was effective than linear type of strength agent in the drainage rate. Nevertheless there was no effect on the drainage rate by adding the pretreated wooden fillers. By adding the pretreated wooden fillers, bulk, air permeability and tensile strength of handsheets were improved with low dosage than non-pretreated fillers.

In this paper, the flame-retardant wall paper was successfully prepared with recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) short cut fiber with flame-retardant property and wood pulp using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as binder followed by treatment of non-halogen flame retardant. Physical properties such as formation index, tensile strength, elongation, and burst strength increased as defibrillation increased except tear strength. Bulk increased but formation index, tensile strength, elongation and burst strength decreased along with addition of PET short cut fiber. It was also found that tear strength rose significantly up to 30% of PET short cut fiber and then declined (fell) rapidly. As addition level of PVA increased tensile strength, elongation and burst strength increased, but tear strength decreased slightly. Addition of 20% of PET short cut fiber and 13% of PVA provided the flame-retardant wall paper with both improved flameproofing and physical properties.

This study was performed to evaluate the effect of paper property changes by internal addition of surface strength agent on printability. Advances in printing technique has required the development of paper qualities in many aspects. Basically paper structure is composed of hydrogen bonds which induce many problems in high speed printing machine because of weak bonding strength. One of the important printing problems is surface picking when mechanical pulp or recycled pulp are used. It was caused by the ink-stained blanket in printing process because accumulations of pollutant in white water and other elements which are bonded weakly or do not have hydrogen bonds. Debris at paper surface adheres to blanket which deteriorates printing efficiency and causes various problems. To complement these problems, Pennocel 5137 of polysaccharide structure was used as an agent to improve paper's surface property, strength and printability. Paper surface picking was analyzed by RI-1 test. As the dosage amount increased tensile strength, fiber bonding strength and ZDT strength were improved. Further more formation, smoothness and surface picking resistance were improved. It was confirmed that when adding polysaccharide structure polymers to improve surface strength such as surface picking resistance, it was also possible to improve tensile strength, fiber bonding strength, formation and smoothness.

The purpose of this study is to use paper sludge ash as a material in manufacturing high strength admixture. The reactivity of paper sludge ash as iteself is low for the crystallized non-reactive $SiO_2$, but when the $SiO_2$ was removed, the phase component is mainly composed of glass phase which could react with cement hydrates. In this study, we manufactured high strength admixture using separated paper sludge ash, and examined the strength of mortar, spun concrete with and without this high strength admixture in steam curing. The strength of spun concrete with high strength admixture including paper sludge ash was more higher than that of spun concrete without admixture. As a result, it was found that paper sludge ash could be used to a pozzolanic material in manufacturing high strength admixture.
In paper I, the relationships between compressive strength and splitting tensile strength or modulus of elasticity were proposed. In this paper, new prediction model is investigated from estimating splitting tensile strength and modulus of elasticity with curing temperature and aging without compressive strength. New prediction model is based on the model which was proposed to predict compressive strength, and splitting tensile strength and modulus of elasticity calculated by this model are compared with experimental values of paper I. To evaluate in-situ applicability of the model, strength and modulus of elasticity tested with variable temperatures are estimated by the prediction model. The prediction model reasonably estimates the strength and the modulus of elasticity of type I and V cement concretes tested in paper I and experimental results with variable temperature tested in this paper.
The objective of this research is to develop paper sludge reinforced thermoplastic composites which incorporate the advantages of each component materials. The effects of paper sludge content(0, 10, 20, 30, 40----), mesh size(20~40, 60~80, less than 100mesh), and coupling agent(Epolene E-43 and Epolene G-3003) on the mechanical properties of paper sludge-polypropylene composites were investigated. Composite density increased with an increase in the paper sludge content. When paper sludge is incorporated into a polypropylene matrix, the flexural properties of the composite increase significantly with an increase in the paper sludge mixing ratio. Especially, flexural modulus was improved with increasing paper sludge content. The flexural strength of composites was improved, but flexural modulus reduced somewhat with decreasing paper sludge particle size. The flexural properties of paper sludge-polypropylene composites were improved by using coupling agents to enhance the bonding between reinforcing filler and matrix. Use of the epolene E-43 and G-3003 resulted in considerable improvement in the flexural strength over control specimens. The flexural strength of the G-3003 composite system is higher than that of the E-43 system. Generally, izod notched impact strength of paper sludge-polypropylene composite decreased slightly, whereas izod unnotched impact strength decreased significantly with increasing paper sludge contents. There was no effects of paper sludge particle size on impact strength of paper sludge-polypropylene composites. And izod unnotched impact strength of epolene E-43 composite system sharply decreased but that of G-3003 composite system was no tendency with increasing additive content.

Paper consists of fiber network and paper properties were highly affected by fiber characteristics. Many researchers have tried to relate fiber and paper properties. Softwood and hardwood fiber's are quite different in their properties. Generally, softwood fiber's are longer and more flexible than hardwood fibers. At present, many paper mills make mixed paper with softwood and hardwood fibers except for special grade. During fracture some fiber's are broken and others are pulled out. In this paper, the number of broken and pulled out fiber's during fracture is analyzed depending on the mixing ratio of softwood and hardwood fiber's. Fiber length, curl, kink, coarseness, WRV and formation index were measured. Double-edged strength samples were prepared to observe the number of broken and pulled out fiber's. Mixed paper strength was decreased with increasing hardwood fibers ratio. During fracture, softwood fiber's were more likely broken and hardwood fibers were more likely pulled out. The strength of paper which consists of softwood fibers was determined by fiber's broken strength and that of hardwood fibers by fiber's debonding strength. Paper strength was changed depending on the fiber's bonding capability. If the fiber is longer and more flexible, the fiber network becomes stronger and stiffer.

In this paper, tests are carried out in order to investigate the strength development of concrete under various binder types, W/B and curing temperature ranged from $5{\sim}20^{\circ}C$. Fly ash and blast furnace slag were incorporated by as much as 30%, respectively. Strength development of concrete are estimated using Logistic model and strength ratio of concrete at 28days to that at early age are also investigated. According to experimental results, it is found that good agreements are obtained between measured values and calculated ones using logistic model below $20^{\circ}C$. Strength ratio of concrete at 28days to that at early age increases in case W/B decreases and curing temperature increases. Tables and graphs for strength ratio of concrete are provided in this paper. It is capable of obtaining and predicting the periods to attain design strength by considering increment factor of strength easily with the table and graphs presented in this paper. This paper presents the reference data to decide removal time of form, time to reach target strength and strength inspection of remicon whether the test specimens meet the specified criteria of compressive strength. Multi regression models with respect to the relationship between 7days compressive strength and 28 days compressive strength depending on W/B and admixture types are presented.

Results are shown on the preparation and characterization of homopolymer of 2-methacryloyloxyethyl isocyanate(MOI) ad copolymers of MOI with styrene synthesized by radical polymerization. The significant effectiveness of the polymers as additives for paper dry and wet strength was found. Dry strength can be increased by 75% and wet strength retention of sheets can reach 30% based on the increased dry strength and about 50% based on the dry strength of untreated sheet. Based on isocyanate group consumption, copolymers containing less isocyanate can give better effect than homopolymer in sheet wet strength improvement. Furthermore, the base paper containing a small amount of polyallylamine hydrochloride was used for polymer treatment and got higher wet strength improvement.
