  • This paper presents a strategic approach to effective soil conservation planning and management. To do this, the soil loss model, Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) was used to quantify soil erosion in two basins (Andong and Imha basin), which are distinct in terms of sedimentation in the reservoir of each basin. Areas with high soil erosion potential were analyzed on the basis of land surface characteristics handled by geographic information system (GIS), especially dividing the basin into several sub-basins and then examination was emphasized near the river channel (water-pollutant buffering zone), along which human activities are large. Modeling results show the approach suggested herein provides a basis and guideline for choosing prior erosion risk areas to be examined for soil conservation planning and management. Also, this approach is relatively simple and has wide practical applicability.

  • Recently demands for marine development are increasing due to limitation of land-based resources, occurrence of the demands for the new materials and the increase of marine transportation among nations. Development activities in marine area give rise to external dis-economic effects to marine species and their habitats. Marine Spatial Planning(MSP) is a system devised to seek sustainable use of marine ecosystem, and to overcome conflicts between conservation and development This paper 1) analysed the effects of MSP in three aspects: economic, ecological and political effects, 2) explained reasons why MSP is necessary in the Korean marine policy and 3) suggested the prerequisites for successful adaptation of MSP in Korea.

  • Museum storage area is one of the most important places because collections are central to museums. However it is often misunderstood and treated as the storage areas of general office buildings md factories. In this paper, lighting design factors for museum storage areas are reviewed, and illuminance values for the various storage areas of the KS and the other countries'are compared and discussed in consideration of collections' management and conservation. And paying our due regard to collections management it is found that the standard illuminance value for museum storage area of the KS is lower than those of the other storage places. Therefore it is raised to 200[㏓]and supplementary lighting which can be controlled separatedly should be provided to increase the illuminance of task lighting.

  • Portable devices generally have limited energy sources, so there is a need to minimize the power consumption of processor using energy conservation methods. One of the most common energy conservation methods is dynamic voltage scaling (DVS). In this paper, we propose a new DVS algorithm which uses workload of application to determine frequency and voltage of processors. The posed DVS algorithm consists of DVS module in kernel and specified function in application. The DVS module monitors the processor utilization and changes frequency and voltage periodically. The other part monitors workload of application. With these two procedures, the processor can change the performance level to meet their deadline while consuming less energy. We implemented the proposed DVS algorithm on PXA270 processor with Linux 2.6 kernel.

  • For optimal reservoir operation during flood period, a general and systematic policy is suggested to make balance of the conflicting purposes between water conservation and flood control. The purpose of this study is to decide the restricted water level of the reservoir during flood period specially to meet water demand in non-flood period. The optimal policy is derived by reallocation of storage capacity through the application of variable restricted water level(VRWL) and minimum required water level(MRWL) for shorter intervals. This study also suggests water level dconditions to secure conservation storage capacity at the end of the flood period estimated by reservoir operation study. This paper illustrates an application of the Daecheong Dam and Chungju Dam respectively during flood and the results are reviewed.

  • There are three natural conservation systems that UNESCO assigns: World Heritage, Biosphere Reserve and Geopark. Geopark is one of three preservation zones that UNESCO conducts. In this paper I will explain the meaning of a Geopark as well as suggest that one should be set up in Korea. Geotourism is one important aspect of Geopark. Geopark's main purpose is not only for sightseeing but also conservation and understanding the value of nature through geological and geographical features. I have analyzed the local guide's interpretations from a Hongdo Island cruise tour and suggested new way of interpretation for the tour with the concept of Korean Geotourism in mind.

  • Since the CBD(Conservation on Biological Diversity)'s 10th Conference of the Parties adopted the protocol on access to genetic resources and benefit sharing in Nagoya 2010, the importance of endangered species studies such as habitat distribution, protection and management have been more emerged. Corylopsis coreana, an endangered species in Korea, was isolated nationally and has been damaged by anthropogenic factors. In this paper, we identified the factors affecting C. coreana habitat at the national scale and regional scale using National Survey of Natural Environment and predicted the distribution of C. coreana. Annual precipitation, precipitation of wettest quarter, temperature seasonality and Digital Elevation Model(DEM) were derived as important factors at the national scale, and precipitation of wettest quarter, DEM and solar radiation on spring were identified as important factors at regional scale. Colylopsis distribution was affected by an effect of climate significantly at the national scale, and by additionally the microclimate and topography at regional scale. These findings will be used as the basis on habitat conservation and restoration plan and climate change.

  • Energy efficiency is critical for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) since sensor nodes usually have very limited energy supply from battery. Sleep scheduling and nodes cooperation are two of the most efficient methods to achieve energy conservation in WSNs. In this paper, we propose an adaptive energy optimization approach for target tracking applications, called Energy-Efficient Node Coordination (EENC), which is based on the grid structure. EENC provides an unambiguous calculation and analysis for optimal the nodes cooperation theoretically. In EENC, the sleep schedule of sensor nodes is locally synchronized and globally unsynchronized. Locally in each grid, the sleep schedule of all nodes is synchronized by the grid head, while globally the sleep schedule of each grid is independent and is determined by the proposed scheme. For dynamic sleep scheduling in tracking state we propose a multi-level coordination algorithm to find an optimal nodes cooperation of the network to maximize the energy conservation while preserving the tracking performance. Experimental results show that EENC can achieve energy saving of at least 38.2% compared to state-of-the-art approaches.

  • The wall painting and Relief type sculpture were a part of an architecture. Therefore they had better to be preserved in situ, differing with other works of arts. But we confronted inevitable cases to transfer them in appropriate place to conserve. And considering their fragility and a potential danger such as a vibration and shock in process of transfer, we had to do the preventive treatments to prohibit unexpected deteriorations. In this paper, I mention the transferring process when Kwon's 'Relief' was faced to be removed by reconstruction program. A preventive treatment and packaging method were referred in priority.

  • The aim of this paper is to propose the preservation of buffaloes not only as productive livestock, but also as a part of the biodiversity of wetlands and especially of the Greek wetlands. The water buffalo used to be an integral part of the biodiversity of many Greek wetland ecosystems, enriched their landscape, and provided invaluable services and products to the rural people and to the economy in general. Its total population before the 1950s was over 100,000 animals. Presently, it is found only in four wetland sites in Macedonia and Thrace and in the estuaries of Rivers Gallikos and Axios, with a total population of a few hundred animals. These wetlands are Ramsar Sites. Even this small population is threatened with immediate extinction because of the rapidly changing rural socio-economic conditions and the expansion of cultivated fields into wet meadows. Farmers and consumers are rapidly losing contact with this mammal and its products. This species possesses minimum requirements for treatment and is characterized by the ability of utilizing roughage of variable nutritional value. These factors are promising to render buffalo breeding a valuable branch of the Greek livestock sector, which can also contribute to the maintenance of the wetlands.
