Fly ash application with a rate of 0, 50, 100, $150Mg\;ha^{-1}$ in clay loam paddy, which had properties of pH 5.3 and low contents of silicate and boron, gave a strongly positive effects on the growth and yields of malting barley showing better responses in bituminous coal fly ash(BCFA) than anthracite fly ash(AFA). Especially, soil chemical characteristics improved greatly by fly ash were pH, available phosphate, exchangeable calcium, available silicate, and boron. Shoot length and the number of tiller till defrosting season appeared the most positive responses by application of BCFA $50Mg\;ha^{-1}$ and AFA $100Mg\;ha^{-1}$. However, the number of spikelet per panicle at heading stage was proportionally increased to the rates of each fly ash. As a result, the grain yields of malting barley were increased to $13.8(4.221Mg\;ha^{-1}){\sim}37.7%(5.106Mg\;ha^{-1})$ by application of BCFA and to $1.1(3.75Mg\;ha^{-1})-20.6%(4.473Mg\;ha^{-1})$ by application of AFA. Protein contents in the grain was the highest in $150Mg\;ha^{-1}$ plot, showing 10.5 and 10.8% by BCFA and AFA application, which were suitable for malting. At harvesting, plants showed 49 and 58% of lodging indices by application of BCFA 100 and $150Mg\;ha^{-1}$, respectively, which were equivalent to two fold values of those by AFA.
A pot experiment was conducted to study the influence of potassium and cesium carrier on the uptake of radionuclide $Cs^{137}$ which is an element released usually from nuclear facilities, by paddy rice upon prolonged cropping of contaminated soils. The results are summarized as follows: 1) Visual toxic symptoms on the growth of rice plant due to treatment of radioactive cesium were not observed up to $20 {\mu}Ci/10Kg$ soil in a pot. 2) The yield and potassium content in rice plant were increased with potassium application, while the reverse was true for the calcium and magnesium. The addition of potassium to the soil markedly reduced $Cs^{137}$ uptake by rice plant but the addition of Cs carrier increased $Cs^{137}$ uptake. 3) Potassium and $Cs^{137}$ showed uniform distribution in all parts of plant and the contents of these two elements were high in the stems and leaves, and low in the heads. The ratio of $Cs^{137}$ to K was, however, not uniform in all parts of a plant. It was shown that this ratio was higher in the seed part, that is, chaff and hulled grain than in the leaves and stems. 4) $Cs^{137}$ absorption rate in rice plant was remarkably reduced with increase of potassium application and it was ranged from $0.02{\sim}0.47%$ in potassium non-treated plot to 0.01∼0.04% in plot treated with a concentration of 16Kg/10a. 5) The amount of $Cs^{137}$ and potassium uptake of rice plant depended on soil type. Uptake of $Cs^{137}$ by rice plant was higher in the soil with low pH and potassium content. The $Cs^{137}$ uptake by rice plant decreased as the potassium content and pH of soil was increased, but $Cs^{137}$ uptake increased when CEC and clay content in soil was high.
This study was carried out by investigating the changes of physico-chemical and mechanical properties of Gwanghwal and Poseung series in order to obtain basic information on the soil improvement and management. 1. In Gwanghwal series, the content of salt in soil and ground water before rice transplanting at the 21st year after reclamation were 0.29 and 1.02 percent respectively, and the safty cultivation of paddy rice was possible after 33 years of reclamation in both soil series. 2. Clay contents. atterberg limits and clay activity according to the age of reclaimation showed negative correlation. but sand content and N-value were positive in them. 3. Cone index was lower than $3kg/cm^2$ for the first 5 years after reclaimation in both soil series, and the formation of hard pan were 33rd and 49th year after reclamation in Gwanghwal and Poseung series respectively, and its thickness was more in Poseung than in Gwanghwal series. 4. Shearing resistance decreased with the age of reclaimation in both soil series. and friction resistance increased in Gwanghwal than Poseung siries. 4. Shearig resistance decreased with the age of reclaimation in both soil series, and friction resistance increased in Gwanghwal than Poseung series. 5. Soil pH. available, $SiO_2$, $Mg^2$, $K^+$, $Na^+$ and C. E. C showed negative correlation. with the year cultivated paddy rice. but O. M. ava ilable $P_2O_5Ca^{2+}$ and T-N had positive one in both soil series. Contents of O. M and $Ca^{2+}$ and T-N had positive one in both soil series. Contents of O. M and $Ca^{2+}$ were high in Gwanghwal, but C. E. C. was in Poseung series.
A green manure crop were used in many ways, such as for reducing chemical fertilizer, improving physical and chemical properties of soils, protecting soil loss, and creating landscape when it's grown in agricultural land. Experiments were conducted to find out carbon emitted with applying green manure crops in paddy field. Amounts of carbon absorbed in the green manure crops during the winter were 1.22 ton $ha^{-1}$ in hairy vetch, 1,24 ton $ha^{-1}$ in barley, and 1.54 ton $ha^{-1}$ in hairy vetch/barley. The soil carbon content was the highest at days before transplanting of rice and decreased after days after harvesting the plant. Soil carbon contents were higher with hairy vetch or barley treatment than with hairy vetch/barley treatment. The content of emitted methane ($CH_4$) was the highest at 7 days after transplanting rice plant, and was 17 ~ 25 times higher with green manure treatments than with chemical fertilizer application. The $CH_4$ emission was the highest with hairy vetch treatment and than followed by hairy vetch/barley and barley treatments. The content of carbon absorbed in rice plant increased during the cultivation period but was not different with the applications of different green manure crops. The yield amounts of rough rice and rice strow were 5 ~ 13% higher with the green manure treatments than the chemical fertilizer application. In particular, they were the highest with hairy vetch/barley treatment as 14.07 ton $ha^{-1}$.

Higher yield in rice paddies is greatly dependent on adequately balanced and timely supply of water. A majority of rice paddy in Korea is generally irrigated by rainfall, but in many cases it has to be supplemented by artificial irrigation for optimum rice culture. Although the water requirement of rice plant is far higher than that of other crops, submerged condition of rice paddy is not necessarily required. The moisture requirement of rice plant varies with its growing stages, and it is possible to increase the irrigation efficiency through reduction of water loss due to percolation in rice paddies. An experiment was conducted on the effectiveness of economical use of water by different irrigation period and different method of cultivation. The experimental plots were set up by means of randomized block design with three duplications; (a) Alltime submerged (b) Economically controlled, and (c) Extremely controlled. Three different irrigation periods were (a) Initial stage (b) Inter-stage, and (c) last stage. The topsoil of the three plots were excavated to the depth of 30cm and then compacted with clay of 6 cm thickness. Thereafter, they were piled up with the excavated top soils, leveled and cored with clay of 6cm thickeness arround footpath in order to prevent leakage. The results obtained frome the experiments are as follows; (1) There is no difference among the three experiment plots in terms of physical and chemical contditions, soil properties, and other characteristics. (2) Colulm length and ear length are not affected by different irrigation methdos. (3) There is no difference in the mature rate and grain weight of rice for the three plots. (4) The control plot which was irrigated every three days shows an increased yield over the all the time submerged plot by 17 persent. (5) The clay lined plot whose water holding capacity was held days long, needs only to be irrigated every 7 days. (6) The clay lined plot showes an increased yield over the untreated plot; over all the time submerged plot by 18 percent, extremely controlled plot by 18 percent, and economically controled plot by 33 percent.
The net flux of global green house gases such as carbon dioxide($CO_2$), methane($CH_4$), and nitrous oxide($N_2O$) emitted from the rotation of paddy-upland soil during growing sesaon under different cropping system was determined. The results obtained were summarized as follows : 1. The net flux of $CO_2$ during the growing season was the highest from continuous cultivation of rice but the lowest from rotation cultivation of rice-soybean. Under the different cropping system the highst emission was from soil of continuous cultivation of rice, but the lowest from converted system. 2. The net emission of methane was the highest from the sold of continuous cultivation of rice, but the flux was remarkably decreased by differing the cropping system. 3. $N_2O$ was emitted greatly from the every two year rotation of potato-chinese cabbage and the next rank was from continuous cultivation of rice, but was decreased notably from rotation cultivation of rice-soybean and potato-chinese cabbage under rotation of paddy-upland cropping system. 4. The ratio of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the soil air was much different with glowing season, the ratio was varied with 4~10 percents for oxygen and 1~22 percents for carbon dioxide. The ratio of carbon dioxide was dozens or hundreds times to that of air, and the variation was very high also. 5. The emission of global green house gases such as carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide was affected by the moisture, temperature and nutrients of soils and the growth period of crops.

Soybean yield has been low and unstable in Japan and other areas in East Asia, despite long history of cultivation. This is contrasting with consistent increase of yield in North and South America. This presentation tries to describe perspective of breaking stagnation of soybean yield in East Asia, considering the factors of the different yields between regions. Large amount of rainfall with occasional dry-spell in the summer is a nature of monsoon climate and as frequently stated excess water is the factor of low and unstable soybean yield. For example, there exists a great deal of field-to-field variation in yield of 'Tanbaguro' soybean, which is reputed for high market value and thus cultivated intensively and this results in low average yield. According to our field survey, a major portion of yield variation occurs in early growth period. Soybean production on drained paddy fields is also vulnerable to drought stress after flowering. An analysis at the above study site demonstrated a substantial field-to-field variation of canopy transpiration activity in the mid-summer, but the variation of pod-set was not as large as that of early growth. As frequently mentioned by the contest winners of good practice farming, avoidance of excess water problem in the early growth period is of greatest importance. A series of technological development took place in Japan in crop management for stable crop establishment and growth, that includes seed-bed preparation with ridge and/or chisel ploughing, adjustment of seed moisture content, seed treatment with mancozeb+metalaxyl and the water table control system, FOEAS. A unique success is seen in the tidal swamp area in South Sumatra with the Saturated Soil Culture (SSC), which is for managing acidity problem of pyrite soils. In 2016, an average yield of $2.4tha^{-1}$ was recorded for a 450 ha area with SSC (Ghulamahdi 2017, personal communication). This is a sort of raised bed culture and thus the moisture condition is kept markedly stable during growth period. For genetic control, too, many attempts are on-going for better emergence and plant growth after emergence under excess water. There seems to exist two aspects of excess water resistance, one related to phytophthora resistance and the other with better growth under excess water. The improvement for the latter is particularly challenging and genomic approach is expected to be effectively utilized. The crop model simulation would estimate/evaluate the impact of environmental and genetic factors. But comprehensive crop models for soybean are mainly for cultivations on upland fields and crop response to excess water is not fully accounted for. A soybean model for production on drained paddy fields under monsoon climate is demanded to coordinate technological development under changing climate. We recently recognized that the yield potential of recent US cultivars is greater than that of Japanese cultivars and this also may be responsible for different yield trends. Cultivar comparisons proved that higher yields are associated with greater biomass production specifically during early seed filling, in which high and well sustained activity of leaf gas exchange is related. In fact, the leaf stomatal conductance is considered to have been improved during last a couple of decades in the USA through selections for high yield in several crop species. It is suspected that priority to product quality of soybean as food crop, especially large seed size in Japan, did not allow efficient improvement of productivity. We also recently found a substantial variation of yielding performance under an environment of Indonesia among divergent cultivars from tropical and temperate regions through in a part biomass productivity. Gas exchange activity again seems to be involved. Unlike in North America where transpiration adjustment is considered necessary to avoid terminal drought, under the monsoon climate with wet summer plants with higher activity of gas exchange than current level might be advantageous. In order to explore higher or better-adjusted canopy function, the methodological development is demanded for canopy-level evaluation of transpiration activity. The stagnation of soybean yield would be broken through controlling variable water environment and breeding efforts to improve the quality-oriented cultivars for stable and high yield.
To comply with stricter regulations provoked by increasing odor nuisance, it is imperative to practice effective odor control for sustainable livestock production. This study was conducted to assess odor and odorous compounds emitted from liquid animal manure with different treatment methods such as Fresh Manure(without treatment, FM), Anaerobic Digestion(AD) and Thermophilic Aerobic Digestion(TAD) and their application to soil. Air samples were collected at the headspace of liquid manure, upland and paddy soil, and analyzed for odor intensity and offensiveness using an olfactometry; odor concentration index using odor analyser; nitrogen-containing compound such as ammonia(NH3) using fluorescence method; and sulfur containing compounds such as hydrogen sulfide(H2S), methyl mercaptan(MeSH), dimethyl sulfide(DMS) and dimethyl disulfide(DMDS) using gas chromatography-pulsed flame photometric detector, respectively. Odor intensity, offensiveness and concentration index from TAD liquid manure was statistically lower than those from FM and AD(p<0.01). Mean concentrations of H2S, MeSH, DMS, DMDS and NH3 were 65.93ppb, 18.55ppb, 5.26ppb, 0.33ppb and 10.57ppm for liquid manure with AD; and 5.15ppb, 0.97ppb, 0.80ppb, 0.56ppb and 1.34ppm for liquid manure with TAD, respectively. More than 60% of malodorous compounds related to nitrogen and sulfur were removed by heterotrophic microorganisms during TAD treatment. When liquid manure was applied onto upland and paddy soil, NH3 removal efficiencies ranged from 51 to 94% and 22 to 91% for AD and TAD liquid manure, respectively. The above results show that liquid manure with TAD is superior to AD and FM with respect to the odor reduction and odor problem caused by land applied liquid manure is directly related to the degree of odor generated by the manure treatment method.
A laboratory experiment was carried out with loamy paddy soily under Hooded condition to study the effects of some pesticides on the decomposition rate of urea and the transformation of nitrogen. The pesticides used in this study are ten kinds, which are usually applicable for rice cropping. The soil was treated with 200ppm of fertilizer urea-N and different levels of pesticides and then incubated at $28{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ for two weeks. The kinds of pesticides used in this study were three kinds of herbicides (2,4-D, Machete and TOK), three kinds of fungicides (Rabcide, Neo-asozine and Phenazine) at the levels of 20,100 and 200ppm and four kinds of insecticides (Birlane, Diazinon, Sumithion and Bux) at the levels of 50,250 and 500ppm. respectively. The results obtained may be summarized as follows. 1. The treatments of herbicides and fungicides show little effect on the decomposition rate of urea at the levels of 20 and 100ppm, but by the treatment of 200ppm it was retarded markedly after one day incubation aside from Rabcide and Neo-asozine. The decomposing rate of urea was inhibited weakly by the treatment with 250ppm of Sumithion and Bux, however, 500ppm of all kinds of insecticides treated in this study brought about strong inhibitory effect (over 50%) after only one day incubation. The applied urea was disappeared nearly completely in three days in all cases with and without pesticides. 2. The production of ammonium-N was increased with the increase of pesticide concentrations gradually through two weeks and otherwise in the control sample a loss of inorganic-N resulted in about 20% extent. 3. The inhibitory effect of the all applied pesticides on_the_ nitrification under flooded condition was observed markedly and may be ordered as insecticides, herbicides and fungicides according to its inhibiting action.
The aim of this study was to determine the residual amounts of PAHs in environmental samples such as crop, soil and water collected from paddy, upland fields and forestlands near industrial zone and/or a thermal power plant in South Korea. All of the samples were analyzed by GC-mass spectrometer. The average contents of total PAHs in soil samples were 140.2 ${\mu}g\;kg^{-1}$ and the range was from 4.3 to $662.9{\mu}g\;kg^{-1}$. The detection of benzo(a)anthracene, chrysene, benzo(b)fluoranthene, benzo(k)fluoranthene, benzo(a)pyrene and dibenzo(a,h) anthracene which have strong carcinogenecity was ranged from 14.2 to 167.8 ${\mu}g\;kg^{-1}$. The residual amounts and detection frequency of PAHs in soil samples from the iron and heavy industrial areas near Pohang and Busan were 3-folds more than those of the other areas. Amounts of PAHs in upland soil samples was 1.5 folds higher than those of paddy soil samples, suggesting that it may be related to the content of organic matter in soil. The average contents of total PAHs in crop samples were 9.7 ${\mu}g\;kg^{-1}$ which ranged from 4.5 to 52.2 ${\mu}g\;kg^{-1}$. However, the residual amounts of PAHs in water samples were not detected. These results showed that soils and crops were slightly contaminated with PAHs. Therefore, the investigation should be continued for evaluating a safety or risk assessment through expansion of regions and crops.
