  • Alumina tapes, having various ratios of alumina to alumina+binder+plasticizer (a/(a+o)) and binder to binder+plasticizer(b/(b+p)), were prepared by the tape casting method. The tapes were thermocompressed varying the thermocompression parameters such as temperature, pressure, and duration time. Among the parameters, the pressure was the most influential to the tape packing density. The packing density varied in two different ways depending on the a/(a+o) ratio. For the tapes having low a/(a+o) ratio, a saturation density was reached by applying very a low pressure of 1 MPa. For tapes with high a/(a+o), on the contrary, the saturation density was obtained at a relatively high pressure. These different responses to the pressure are attributed to the fact that the rearrangement of alumina particles by the pressure becomes easy as an organic content in the tapes is high.

  • Injection molding is one of the most general manufacturing processes of polymers. The deformation of final molded parts occurs because of the change of temperature and pressure during injection molding process. The deformation of injection molded parts depends on many operational conditions, such as, melt temperature, injection speed, mold temperature, packing pressure, and the structure of mold. In the present paper, injection molding experiments were performed to find the process conditions to affect the average shrinkage in thickness direction and the replication ratio of fine patterns on the surface for the final injection-molded LGP samples. As a results, in the cases of PC(Polycarbonate), when the melt temperature was under $285^{\circ}C$, both average shrinkage and replication ratios were mainly influenced by packing pressure. However, the replication ratio was more influenced by melt temperature than packing pressure for the cases of higher melt temperature.

  • Pressure drop and flow characteristics through a filter medium have been investigated numerically. A basic model similar to the filter employed in a hard disk drive was established so that the inflow velocity was 0.1 m/s and the box size was $40mm{\times}50mm{\times}30mm$. The filter medium specifications were 0.38mm of thickness, $1{\mu}m$ of fiber diameter, 0.05 of packing density. And the filter medium was pleated by 10 within the filter box. Twenty-one sets of calculation were performed with different inlet velocities, pleated numbers, and packing densities from the basic model. As the result, it was found that the velocity after filter medium had maximum value at the rear of the upstream pleated line, but had minimum value at the rear of the downstream pleated line. This made the velocity distribution have sinusoidal form immediately after the filter medium. As the inlet velocity increased, the pressure drop increased linearly. But as the packing density increased the pressure drop increased quadratically.

  • As Kori unit 1 is undergoing the decommissioning process, estimating the disposal amount of waste from the decommissioned nuclear reactor has become one of the challenging issues. Since the waste disposal amount estimation depends on the packing of the waste, it is highly desirable to optimize the waste packing plan. In this study, we developed an efficient scheme for packing waste component segments. The scheme consists of 1) preparing three-dimensional models of segments, 2) orienting each segment in such a way to minimize the bounding box volume, and 3) applying hybrid genetic algorithm to pack the segments in the disposal containers. When the packing solution converges in the algorithm, it comes up with the number of containers used and the placement of segments in each container. The scheme was applied to Kori-1 reactor pressure vessel. The required number of containers calculated by the developed scheme was 24 compared to 42 that was the estimation of the prior packing plan, resulting in disposal volume savings by more than 40%. The developed method is flexible for applications to various packing problems with waste segments from different cutting options and different sizes of containers.

  • In this study, we try to formularize simultaneous equations to make a prediction about pressure drop for designing intravascular artificial lung assist device. Designing parameters to predict the effect of pressure drop and designed modules under various conditions were studied through an experimental modeling before inserting the artificial lung assist device into as venous. We measured pressure drop in various number of hollow fiber membranes, when the inside diameter of shell is fixed in 3 cm, and tried to develope the prediction equations by curve fitting based on the correlation between the experimental pressure drop and the device frontal area or packing density. The results showed that pressure drop increased with 2nd order functional formula as the liquid flow rate, the frontal area, and the packing density increased. Also, we can estimate the pressure drop as a function of the frontal area or packing density. The pressure drop obtained from the experiment was similar to that from the equation, confirming the usefulness of the equation.

  • For the evaluation of operability of MOV(Motor Operated Valve), the precision prediction of thrust/torque acting on the valve is important. In this paper, the analytical prediction method of thrust/torque was proposed. The design basis stem thrust calculation typically considers the followings: Packing thrust, Stem rejection load, design basis differential pressure load. In general, test results show that temperature, pressure, fluid type, and differential pressure, independently and combination, all have an effect on the friction factor. The prediction results of thrust/torque are well agrement with dynamic test results.

  • The valve applied air pressure type of high pressure packing is developed to prolong the lifetime and to enhance the airtight. The effective valve developed enables to get remove the remaining pressure through the part of valve in handle so that a separate valve to drain is no need. The character of valve developed in this experiment is high packing of valve through special form and having drain hole in stem that enables a drainage regardless the status of vale is closed or opened.

  • The influences of the powder packing density on the Bi-2223/Ag tape have been investigated. For packing powder, both method of uniaxial press and packed rod form made by cold isostatic press(CIP) have been applied. As the pressure of cold isostatic press(CIP) is increased, fill factor and critical current (Ic) of Bi-2223/Ag tape is increased. At a pressure of 2000kgf/cm$^2$, fill factor reach ∼3l% and this sample has the engineering current density(Je) value of ∼8.5kA/cm$^2$(Ic ∼77A, Jc ∼ 30kA/cm$^2$). The tape sample packed by uniaxial press method shows more sawsaging effect than the sample processed by cold isostatic press(CIP), resulting from inhomogity of powder distribution produced by the process of uniaxial press.

  • The purpose of this research is the warpage reduction for intake-manifold which is made to the injection molding. Intake-manifold is assembling to ultra sonic welding after forming. Therefore deformation is influence on the performance and manufacture to intake-manifold product. Location and number of gates, filling time, mold temperature, packing time, packing pressure and cooling time are factors that affect the deformation of injection molding product. Therefore, the injection molding characteristics of intake-manifold and the estimated deformation are detected by CAE analysis and compare measuring data in this study.

  • Prediction of the maximum packing volume fraction with non-spherical particles has been one of the important problems in powder technology. The sphericity of fly ash particles depending on the particle diameter was measured by means of a CCD image processing instrument. An algorithm to predict the maximum packing volume fraction with non-spherical particles is proposed. The maximum packing volume fraction is used to predict the slurry viscosity under well dispersed conditions. For this purpose, Simha's cell model is applied for concentrated slurry with wide particle size distribution. Also, Usui's model developed for aggregative slurries is applied to predict the non-Newtonian viscosity of dense fly ash - water slurry. It is certified that the maximum packing volume fraction for non-spherical particles can be successfully used to predict slurry viscosity. The pressure drop in a pipe flow is predicted by using the non-Newtonian viscosity of dense fly ash-water slurry obtained by the present model. The predicted relationship between pressure drop and flow rate results in a good agreement with the experimented data obtained for a test rig with 50 mm inner diameter tube. Base on the design procedure proposed in this study, a feasibility study of fly ash hydraulic transportation system from a coal-fired power station to a controlled deposit site is carried out to give a future prospect of inexpensive fly ash transportation technology.
