Shelf-life Extension of Fresh and Processed Meat Products by Various Packaging Applications

  • This article delves into the current status of various packaging technologies, which are currently being applied or are under development for the shelf-life extension and quality improvement of fresh and processed meat products. Traditional packaging methods include vacuum packaging, modified atmosphere packaging, and air-permeable packaging. Recently, innovative packaging methods have been introduced that utilize technologies such as barrier-films, active packaging, nanotechnology, microperforated films, far-infrared radiations, and plasma treatment. All of these packaging methods have their own merits and drawbacks in terms of shelf-life and quality maintenance. A right choice of packaging system for fresh and processed meat products must be made in accordance with the conditions of the raw material, storage, and distribution in the market and household, and while considering the environmental sustainability and consumer's expectations.

  • The production, distribution, and consumption of Korean medicinal herbs have increased every year because of an increase of health considerations. But there are no sufficient standardization procedures in packaging and distribution systems related to these herb products. The standardization of packaging material and dimension could be a good addition for establishing proper quality control methods for Korean medicinal herbs. Medicinal herbs deteriorate under physical, chemical and biological hazards such as oxidation, textural change under high moisture content, color change by light, sanitation problems by insect invasion and contamination. Packaging standardization with proper functional packaging materials is critical to ensure the qualities of medicinal herbs. Also, storage and distribution efficiencies can be improved by achieving packaging dimension standardization. This review summarizes recent research trends related to quality evaluation methods and major quality deterioration factors of Korean medicinal herbs. This paper also offers reviews on some of problems and challenges in current packaging and distribution systems of medicinal herb industries and briefly suggests advanced quality control methods through packaging standardization.

21세기의 포장산업의 전망 (Prospects of Packaging Industry in Japan for the 21st Century)

  • This paper is discussed on the prospects of packaging industry and technologies of Japan for comming 21th century. It is clear that packaging industry depends on living style and social mechanizms. A trends of numerical consumption, amounts of money and composisition of packaging materials are one of a measure of development of packaging industry. Total consumption of packaging materials in Japan of 1965, 1980 and 1993 were $6,344.5{\times}10^3,\;15,898.7{\times}10^3\;and\;21,603.3{\times}10^3$ tons respectively and also, shipping money of packaging materials were $7,073{\times}10^{11},\;45,421{\times}10^{11}\;and\;63,902{\times}10^{11}$ yen, respectively. It is estimated from these data that the packaging industry is also increasing in future according of GNP of country. Compositions of packaging materials from 1965 to 1993, however, are somewhat changing according to development of new materials or social conditions such as platics packaging or wooden packaging materials. Technical forcasts of packaging industry are shown from view point of national living style, energy and resorces as well as environment of world based on forcasting committee of pulp & paper in Japan, report of research committee for the 21th packaging in JPI and materials of symposium in Kanagawa University in this paper. As a my conclusion, many functional packaging materials shall be developed in the future and accordingly Life Cycle Assesment plays a important role of packaging fields. Furthermore, I am estimating in future the new cellulosic materials such as nonwood fiber resources instead of paper, board, wooden containers and a part of plastic packaging materials shall be developed. 종이 기반과 플라스틱 기반 보건마스크 패키징의 환경영향 비교 (Comparison of Environmental Evaluation for Paper and Plastic Based Mask Packaging)

  • In this study, environmental evaluation of high barrier coated paper (coating layer/paper) packaging is conducted in comparison with conventional aluminum laminated (PET/VMPET/LLDPE) plastic packaging. The target product for this packaging is a KF94 mask, which requires a high barrier of water and oxygen to maintain the filtration ability of the mask filter. The functional unit of this study is 10,000 mask packaging materials based on a material capable of blocking oxygen (<1 g/m2day) and moisture (<3 g/m2day) for the preservation of KF94 masks. In order to understand the results easily, paper-based mask packaging system divided into 6 stages (pulp, pulping & paper making, calendaring & coating, printing, packing and waste management), while plastic-based mask packaging consists of 5 stages (material production, processing, printing, packing, waste management) In case of paper-based mask packaging, most contributing stage is calendaring & coating, resulting from heat and electricity production. On the other hand, plastic-based mask packaging is contributed more than 30% by material production, specifically due to linear low density polyethylene and purified terephthalic acid production. The comparison results show that global warming potential of paper-based mask packaging has 32% lower than that of plastic-based mask packaging. Most of other impact indicators revealed in similar trend.

Application of Nanotechnology in Food Packaging

  • Nanocomposite has been considered as an emerging technology in developing a novel food packaging materials. Polymer nanocomposites exhibit markedly improved packaging properties due to their nanometer size dispersion. These improvements include increased barrier properties pertaining to gases such as oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water vapor, as well as to UV rays, and increased mechanical properties such as strength, stiffness, dimensional stability, and heat resistance. Additionally, biologically active ingredients can be added to impart the desired functional properties to the resulting packaging materials. New packaging materials created with this technology demonstrate an increased shelf life with maintaining high quality of the product. Nanotechnology offers big benefits for packaging. Nanocomposite technology paves the way for packaging innovation in the flexible and rigid packaging applications, offering enhanced properties such as greater barrier protection, increased shelf life and lighter-weight materials.

Potential Use of Biopolymer-based Nanocomposite Films in Food Packaging Applications

  • Concerns on environmental waste problems caused by non-biodegradable petrochemical-based plastic packaging materials as well as consumer's demand for high quality food products has caused an increasing interest in developing biodegradable packaging materials using annually renewable natural biopolymers such as polysaccharides and proteins. However, inherent shortcomings of natural polymer-based packaging materials such as low mechanical properties and low water resistance are causing a major limitation for their industrial use. By the way, recent advent of nanocomposite technology rekindled interests on the use of natural biopolymers in the food packaging application. Polymer nanocomposites, especially natural biopolymer-layered silicate nanocomposites, exhibit markedly improved packaging properties due to their nanometer size dispersion. These improvements include increased mechanical strength, decreased gas permeability, and increased water resistance. Additionally, biologically active ingredients can be added to impart the desired functional properties to the resulting packaging materials. Consequently, natural biopolymer-based nanocomposite packaging materials with bio-functional properties have huge potential for application in the active food packaging industry. In this review, recent advances in the preparation and characterization of natural biopolymer-based nanocomposite films, and their potential use in food packaging applications are addressed.

RFID의 패키징 적용에 관한 연구 (A Study on RFID Applications to Packaging)

  • The excitement over radio frequency identification (RFID) technology has gained momentum in the last five years, with a diversification in the range of applications. Besides academic research into radio frequency identification (RFID) has proliferated over the last few years, however there is much to be desired on Packaging industry. In this paper, we present a literature reviews of researches of RFID system on Packaging, especially focused on RFID system standardization into packaging. There is not any packaging standard or guidance about tag locations, classification with the materials and so on. Therefore it hampers reduction of the distribution costs on political and corporate sides, and lack consistency of applying RFID system. The main focus of this review paper is to establish a constituency about legislating RFID system standard on packaging. It is hoped that the review will be a good resource for future research in order to applly RFID system to Packaging industry effectively.

한일 패키징 콘테스트 수상작에 관한 비교 분석 (Comparative Study on the Packaging Contest Winners' Work of Korea and Japan)

  • Compared to the 2007 packaging contest winners' work of Korea and Japan, their packaging trends have been studied in this study. Environmental-friendly packaging have been turned out the main trend at the same time in both Korea and Japan markets in this comparative research. In applied technology aspects, there was a remarkable distinction compared to packaging technology of both countries; Korea's technology was evaluated out to be lagged behind Japan by three or four years in this study. The road map for future packaging development plan shall be suggested by following comparative studies from the annual packaging contests which are supposed to be held in many developed countries.

화장품의 친환경적인 포장개발에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Development of the Environmental Friendly Packaging of Cosmetic Products)

  • Packaging has been regarded as a environmental problem because of its relatively high portion of municipal solid wastes. Especially, cosmetic packaging has been focused because of characteristics of cosmetic packaging. Cosmetic products are highly sensitive products that pursue the beauty differently from other products. Cosmetic packaging materials are difficult to be recycled. Purpose of this study is to suggest the method to improve the environmental friendly packaging of cosmetic products. This study contains the major governmental policies on the cosmetic packaging in terms of environment issues in Korea, and suggested methods to develop the environmental friendly packaging of cosmetic products.
