  • The purpose of this research was to compare the nutrient removal efficiency, and to estimate the net reaction time in order to calculate a "phase" transfer rate. SBR(SBR1) with flexible verticals and single reactor SBR(SBR1). Consequently, the removal efficiencies of $COD_{Cr}$, and $BOD_5$ in SBR1 and SBR2 were 91.5%, 97.5% and 90.4%, 97.3%, Respectively. Accordingly, the organic removal efficiency was not distinguished in both processes. In the T-N and T-P removal efficiencies, however, SBR1 obtained higher removal efficiency than SBR2, at 12.1% and 7.6% respectively. Also, in the experiment to estimate the "phase" transfer rate, SBR1 was higher than SBR2 Because SBR1 has two phases in the single reactor simultaneously, it has the buffer capacity to reduce the "phase" transfer time and provides a definite reaction condition.

  • The Gwangtonggyo(bridge) on the Cheonggyecheon(river) is mainly composed of biotite granite with coarse grain. The rock consists mainly of quartz, plagioclase, microcline, orthoclase and biotite with lesser amount of muscovite, sericite and chlorite. Muscovite and sericite may be formed from feldspars and chlorite from biotite by alteration(including weathering). These rocks are relatively deteriorated by weathering, polluted water running the river and heavy traffic. The main phenomena of damages are surface exfoliation, grain separation, deceleration, pollution of organic and heavy chemical elements, cracks and breakage. These phenomena have been analyzed by polarized microscope, XRD and SEM/EDX. The analyzed results show organic pollution and secondarily formed gypsum and apatite on the rock surface and micro-pores. NaCl and $CaCO_3$ as rock salt and calcite probably may be formed secondarily in some points. Also heavy chemical elements such as Cr, Pb, Pd, W, La, Zn and Nd are polluted in some samples. The contacts between rocks are generally breakdown in small scale or cracks are developed due to mainly load and vibration shock of heavy traffic.

  • The static stability of the otter board in relation to the angle of attack ($\alpha$) was studied analytically and experimentally from the moments of tensions and hydrodynamic force acting on it. Three flat plates of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 aspect ratios (λ) and four cambered plates of 5, 10, 15, and 20% camber ratios (CR) with the same aspect ratio (λ=1.5) were tested in a circulating water tank for measuring the hydrodynamic forces and moments relevant to the position of hydrodynamic center. And, center-of-pressure coefficients ($C_p$) and moment coefficients ($C_M$) of each plate as a function of the angle of attack were calculated for estimating the static stability from hydrodynamic forces. The obtained results are summarized as follows ; 1. When the angle of attack for otter board is changed from equilibrium for some reason, moments depending upon tensions of warp and sweep line always act in order to have the static stability, respectively. 2. Position of center-of-pressure of each flat plate moves from leading edge to center of plate with the increase of the angle of attack. It means that the moment of hydrodynamic force acting on flat plates also increases the static stability of plate. 3. With the increase of the angle of attack for cambered plates, the positions of center of-pressure move from trailing to leading edge, and then turn toward center of plate. As the camber ratios increase, the ranges of the angle of attack of the static un stability depending on moment of hydrodynamic force become wide.

  • Inconel 713C which of a commercial Ni super alloy have the composition of 70 % Ni, 12 % Cr, 6 % Al and 4 % Mo. Mo is very expensive and have some economic value to recover in the alloy. In this study, liquid-liquid exraction(solvent extraction and stripping) has been performed to separate Mo from the synthetic leaching solution of spent Inconel 713C alloy and prepare to Mo powder by dying, evaporation and heat treatment. The experiments were conducted by using synthetic leaching solution which was prepared $NaMoO_4$ $2H_2O$ by dissolved in distilled water. Alamine336 and Cyanex272 dissolved in kerosene were used as extractants. The extraction percentage of Mo by Alamine336 is 99 % in the condition of the range of pH 1 to 4 and 1 % of concentration of Alamine336. The stripping solutions are used by HCl, $H_2SO_4$ and $HNO_3$ solutions and the concentrations were controlled by distilled water. The concentrations of HCl, $H_2SO_4$ and $HNO_3$ as stripping solutions are increased, the stripping percentages of Mo are increased and the stripping percentage of Mo by $HNO_3$ is higher than other stripping solutions. After liquid-liquid extraction and heat treatment, $MoO_3$ powder which of the purity of 97.5 % was prepared.

  • Purpose : Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is a fundamental parameter in assessing renal function and predicting the progression of chronic renal disease. Because the use of serum creatinine has several disadvantages, many studies have investigated the use of cystatin C for estimating GFR. We compared creatinine clearance and GFR with formulas using serum creatinine and cystatin C. Methods : We retrospectively analyzed 211 patients with various renal diseases and classified them into two groups according to creatinine clearance (Group 1: CrCl >$90mL/min/1.73m^2$, Group 2: CrCl <$90mL/min/1.73m^2$). We measured serum creatinine, cystatin C, and creatinine clearance. We calculated GFR using the Schwartz, Counahan, Filler and Lepage, Bokencamp et al, and Grubb et al formulas. Results : GFR determined by the Schwartz formula had the highest correlation to creatinine clearance (r=0.415, P=0.00). GFR determined by various formulas using cystatin C had lower correlation to creatinine clearance (r=0.187, r=0.187, r=0.291). The Schwartz and Counahan formulas showed greater diagnostic accuracy in detecting decreased GFR than cystatin C in group 2 (areas under the curve: Schwartz, 0.596; Counahan, 0.572; Filler, 0.512; Bokencamp, 0.508; and Grubb, 0.514). Conclusion : GFR determined by the Schwartz and Counahan formulas using serum creatinine showed higher correlation coefficient than that determined by formulas using cystatin C. The formulas using cystatin C were not superior to those using serum creatinine in detecting decreased GFR. Cystatin C measurement was not satisfactory for assessing GFR in patients whose renal function was not severely decreased.

  • The hypoglycemic effects of Korean wild vegetables : Capsella bursa-pastoris Medicus(CBM) Commelina communis L. (CCL) Calystegics japonica Choisy(CJC) Discorea japonica Thunb(DJT) and Persicaria perfolidata Gross(PPG) in diabetic rats were determined. Sixty male Sprague-Dawley diabetic rats(130~180g) induced by the streptozotocin (45mg/kg) injection into the tail vein were fed either a control or experimental diets for four weeks. The plasma levels of glucose and cholesterol were measured. The urinary glucose levels were monitored. Crude fiber mineral(Ca, Fe, Zn and Cr) and ascorbic acid contents of the wild vegetables were analyzed. The extents of blood glucose decrement in CCL. DJT or PPG fed rats were greater than that in the control group. This extents of decrement in CBM or CJC fed rats were not significan-tly different from that in the control group. The urinary glucose was shown to be negative to Band reagent strip in CCL or DJT group at the 4th week. The plasma cholesterol levels of all the groups including control group were not essentially different. It is suggested that the intakes of CCL or DJT could be useful for prevetive and therapeutic approches to alleviate the hyperglycemic status in diabetes mellitus.

  • Purpose : The reliability of hair mineral analyses regarding nutritional status, environmental exposure or diseases is controversial. The aim of this study was to determine the normal reference range of hair mineral concentration of Korean children. Methods : We examined hair mineral concentrations of 223 children(3-12 yrs old, 110 boys, 113 girls, mean age $8.8{\pm}2.2$ yrs old) living in the northern area of Seoul. The trace elements including six toxic elements(Al, As, Cd, Ba, Hg, Pb) and 11 nutritional elements(Na, Mg, P, K, Ca, Cr, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Se) were analyzed by inductive coupled plasma mass spectrometry(ICP-MS). Results : The mean concentrations of Ca and Mg were higher in girls than in boys. The mean concentrations of Cd, Pb and Cr were higher in boys than girls. The Zn, Ca, Mg, Cu and Hg levels in hair samples were positively correlated with increasing age. The Zn levels of the Korean children's hair samples appear to be lower than that of other countries' reference values. Conclusion : There are considerable differences in hair mineral concentrations by age, sex and race. Additional research is needed to establish Korean reference values, and to evaluate the usefulness of hair mineral analyses as a screening tool for nutrition- and environment-related childhood diseases.

  • Soldering is the usual method used to correct an unstable fixed partial denture framework at patient's try-in; However, presoldering base metal alloys is technique-sensitve and results are unstable because it is difficult to maintain uniform heat distribution and to prevent oxidation of an alloy. A cast-joining technique has been developed by Weiss and Munyon for repair, correction and addition to base metal framework. This joining technique eliminates the problem with presoldering of non-precious frameworks. The object of this study was to 1) compare the relative flexure strength and the joining effectiveness of Ni-Cr-Be cast in two pieces and 'pre-soldered' versus in two pieces and 'cast-joined'. 2) determine the effect of increasing the number of retentive grooves on the face of the cast and 3) determine the effect of the relative matched position of groove patterns on flexure strength. The joining effectiveness can be expressed by the ratio of the mean flexure stress of soldered or cast-joined specimens to that of one-piece cast. Resin rods 3mm in diameter were used as pattern of specimens for one-piece casted, presoldered, and cast-joined groups. Cast-joined specimens had two different patterns of retentive grooves on the joined faces. Type A had cross-shaped grooves 1mm in depth. 0.6mm in width. Type B was the same except for the addition of one more retentive groove. In the experiment connecting cast-joined specimens, half of specimens with type A pattern had their patterns on the faces of paired casts matched with each other as mirror image. With the rest pairs, it was proceeded that one of paired casts turned 45 degrees so that the patterns crossed. Half of specimens with type B pattern also had the patterns matched as mirror image; However, here, one of paired casts turned 90 degrees with the other pairs. Retentive groove in this study lacked the intentional undercuts, in contrast with the suggestion of Weiss and Munyon. The specimens were subjected to four-point flexural loading in an Instron testing machine. The midspan flexural stress was calculated at the point of initial plastic strain as determined from a strip-chart recorder or at the point of failure if this occured at a lower stress level. Within the scope of this study, the following results were obtained. 1. The presoldered group showed flexural strength at least 2 times higher than the cast-joined groups. Its joining effectiveness was 82%. 2. In cast-joined groups, the flexural strength of joints with type B patterns exhibited 1.5 times that of joints with type A patterns. Joining effectivenesses were 38% for type B patterns, 25-26% for type A patterns. 3. The relative matched position of groove patterns did not have any significant effect on flexural strength of the cast-joined specimens with either type A patterns or type B patterns(p>.05).

  • Objectives: This study investigated the levels and components of floor-settled dust in two elementary schools located at different sites (one near the Shihwa industrial complex and the other in a rural area) in order to evaluate the amounts of trace metal elements (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn) and microorganisms. Methods: Over twenty settled-dust samples were collected from the two elementary schools. Trace metal elements were extracted from the dust using hydrochloric acid and nitric acid, and the amounts were measured by ICP-OES. Microbiological analysis was performed by bacterial culturing using R2A medium and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). Results: The results showed that the amounts of three metal elements (Cr, Pb, and Zn) were significantly different between the schools (${\alpha}$=0.05, p<0.04). In addition, microbial communities in each school were highly correlated with one another. Among the identified microorganisms, a number of potentially opportunistic microorganisms, including antibiotic-resistant bacteria such as Acinetobacter baumannii, were found. Conclusions: This study will provide preliminary data for assessing levels and types of chemical and microbiological agents in elementary schools and for further evaluating human health risks associated with the agents.

  • This work carried out to analyze the physicochemical properties and investigate the assessment of heavy metal contamination of stream sediments of the Yudeung and the Gab streams in the Daejeon area. The pH of stream sediments of the Yudeung stream shows the range of weak acid and weak alkaline. Most of stream sediments contain about 80% sand grain and have low water and cation retention capacity. Hence the stream sediments are not suitable fur various plans to grow up. The analysis of heavy metals in the stream sediments shows that the concentration of Pb, Cr and Cd increases from upstream to down stream. It is likely that the trend has a relationship with the water. Contamination of stream water. The authors recommend that clay materials be replenished in the stream sediments to increase the self-purification capacity and to make the suitable condition for growing up of various plants, and that water quality of the stream which can Influence into the contamination of stream sediments be monitored.
