  • We have fabricated and evaluated a new Si pin photodetector for APF optical link. The fabricated device has the $p^{+}$-guard ring around the metal-semiconductor contact and the web patterned $p^{+}$-shallow diffused region in the light absorbing area. From the measurements of electo-optical characteristics under the bias of -5 V, the junction capacitance of 4 pF and the dark current of 180 pA were obtained. The optical signal current of 1.22 $\mu$A and the responsivity of 0.55 A/W were obtained when the 2.2 $\mu$W optical power with peak wavelength of 670 nm was incident on the device. The fabricated device showed the maximum spectral response in a spectrum of 650-700 nm. It is expected that the fabricated device can be very useful for detecting the optical signal in the application of red light optics.

  • P. M. Cohn called a ring R reversible if whenever ab = 0, then ba = 0 for $a,b{\in}R$. In this paper, we study an extension of a reversible ring with its endomorphism. An endomorphism ${\alpha}$ of a ring R is called strong right (resp., left) reversible if whenever $a{\alpha}(b)=0$ (resp., ${\alpha}(a)b=0$) for $a,b{\in}R$, ba = 0. A ring R is called strong right (resp., left) ${\alpha}$-reversible if there exists a strong right (resp., left) reversible endomorphism ${\alpha}$ of R, and the ring R is called strong ${\alpha}$-reversible if R is both strong left and right ${\alpha}$-reversible. We investigate characterizations of strong ${\alpha}$-reversible rings and their related properties including extensions. In particular, we show that every semiprime and strong ${\alpha}$-reversible ring is ${\alpha}$-rigid and that for an ${\alpha}$-skew Armendariz ring R, the ring R is reversible and strong ${\alpha}$-reversible if and only if the skew polynomial ring $R[x;{\alpha}]$ of R is reversible.

  • The level of genetic diversity and genetic relationships among Korean ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus karpowi) habitat and subspecies have been investigated based on Inter Simple Sequence Repeat (ISSR) markers. Wild and domesticated Korean ring-necked pheasant, hybrids between domesticated Korean ring-necked and foreign subspecies, and four foreign subspecies; Chinese ring-necked (P. c. torquatus), Melanistic mutant (P. c. mut. tenebrosus), XL White (P. c. mut) and Southern green (P. c. versicolor) were used for comparison. On the basis of the results of AMOV A, 94.08% of genetic diversity in Korean ring-necked was allocated among individuals within habitat differences. Estimate of $\Phi$st, which represents the degree of genetic differentiation among habitats was 5.9%. Based on the dendrogram reconstructed by UPGMA, Yangpyung habitat of the eight habitats turned out to be distinct from others habitat. Interestingly, domesticated Korean ring-necked and hybrid mixture showed closer genetic relationship with four foreign subspecies than Korean ring-necked. As a consequence of AMOVA, 96.63% of genetic diversity in four foreign subspecies was allocated among individuals within subspecies. Estimate of $\Phi$st representing the degree of genetic differentiation among subspecies was 3.4%, which was lower than that among habitats of Korean ring-necked. The lower level of genetic difference among four foreign subspecies showed that these subspecies were genetically closer even though they were morphologically classified into four different subspecies. When seven habitats of Korean ring-necked pheasant and four foreign subspecies were divided into Korean and Foreign Pheasant Groups, respectively, more than 17% of genetic diversity was allocated between groups (about 4% among habitats/subspecies within groups). This observation implied that Korean ring-necked pheasant is genetically quite different from four foreign subspecies. On the basis of cluster analysis, three foreign subspecies (Chinese ring-necked pheasant, Melanistic mutant pheasant, and XL White pheasant) formed a distinct group with domesticated Korean ring-necked pheasant and hybrid mixture at 98% confidence interval.

  • General physical properties and radiation durabilities of some domestic woods and imported lauans were measured and discussed as a preliminary study on the preparation of W. P. C. The data obtained indicate that 1) the hardness of wood is generally proportional to the specific gravity and to the bending strength, 2) the hardness of wood measured in tangential direction to the annual ring increases along with the distance from the center of the annual ring to the peel, 3) the changes of specific gravity under 100 Mrad gamma irradiation are not remarkable, 4) the hardnesses of the soft woods are decreased more -readily than those of the hard woods, but the decreases of hardnesses are not extreme upto 10 Mrad sugges ting that the woods are sufficiently durable to gamma irradiation of below 10 Mard in the preparation of W. P. C.

  • Some modular representations of reflection groups related to Weyl groups are considered. The rational cohomology of the classifying space of a compact connected Lie group G with a maximal torus T is expressed as the ring of invariants, H*(BG; ℚ) ≅ H*(BT; ℚ)W(G), which is a polynomial ring. If such Lie groups are locally isomorphic, the rational representations of their Weyl groups are equivalent. However, the integral representations need not be equivalent. Under the mod p reductions, we consider the structure of the rings, particularly for the Weyl group of symplectic groups Sp(n) and for the alternating groups An as the subgroup of W(SU(n)). We will ask if such rings of invariants are polynomial rings, and if each of them can be realized as the mod p cohomology of a space. For n = 3, 4, the rings under a conjugate of W(Sp(n)) are shown to be polynomial, and for n = 6, 8, they are non-polynomial. The structures of H*(BTn-1; 𝔽p)An will be also discussed for n = 3, 4.

  • Acid dissociation constants of 5-acetyl-8-hydroxyquinoline have been determined by spectrophotometric and potentiometric methods at $25^{\circ}C$. $pK_1$, $pK_2$ values obtained by potentiometric method were 4.56, 8.20 respectively and $pK_1$ obtained by spectrophotometric method was 4.21. pK values were lower than those of 8-hydroxyquinoline. The lower basicity of 5-acetyl-8-hydroxyquinoline compared with 8-hydroxyquinoline was considered as the result of the electronic attraction of the acetyl group with aromatic ring.

  • The initiation and cessation of cambial activities were investigated to find out the growth characteristics of the major species growing in Chuncheon, Korea. The division of cambial zone in Pinus densiflora and Pinus koraiensis began from the middle of March through the end of March. The activity of cambial zone in P. densiflora and P. koraiensis was vigorous from the end of May through the middle of July. During this period the number of cells increased rapidly in radial direction. However, the number of cells in P. densiflora was gradually increased. The division of cambial zone in ring-porous wood, such as Quercus mongolica and Robinia pseudoacacia began in the middle of March, before the formation of vessel. The division of cambial zone in diffuse-porous wood, such as Cornus controversa and Prunus sargentii, began in early April, and then the formation of vessels began after one to three weeks. It was considered that the cambial zone in softwood was ceased from the beginning of November, whereas cambial activities in hardwood ceased in the middle of October. Consequently, the formation of growth ring was different among the species, even though the trees were grown under the same conditions.

  • Near-rings considered are right near-rings and R is a near-ring. $J_0^r(R)$, the right Jacobson radical of R of type-0, was introduced and studied by the present authors. In this paper $J_1^r(R)$ and $J_2^r(R)$, the right Jacobson radicals of R of type-1 and type-2 are introduced. It is proved that both $J_1^r$ and $J_2^r$ are radicals for near-rings and $J_0^r(R){\subseteq}J_1^r(R){\subseteq}J_2^r(R)$. Unlike the left Jacobson radical classes, the right Jacobson radical class of type-2 contains $M_0(G)$ for many of the finite groups G. Depending on the structure of G, $M_0(G)$ belongs to different right Jacobson radical classes of near-rings. Also unlike left Jacobson-type radicals, the constant part of R is contained in every right 1-modular (2-modular) right ideal of R. For any family of near-rings $R_i$, $i{\in}I$, $J_{\nu}^r({\oplus}_{i{\in}I}R_i)={\oplus}_{i{\in}I}J_{\nu}^r(R_i)$, ${\nu}{\in}\{1,2\}$. Moreover, under certain conditions, for an invariant subnear-ring S of a d.g. near-ring R it is shown that $J_2^r(S)=S{\cap}J_2^r(R)$.

  • P. M. Cohn called a ring R reversible if whenever ab = 0, then ba = 0 for a, $b\;{\in}\;R$. Commutative rings and reduced rings are reversible. In this paper, we extend the reversible condition of a ring as follows: Let R be a ring and $\alpha$ an endomorphism of R, we say that R is right (resp., left) $\alpha$-shifting if whenever $a{\alpha}(b)\;=\;0$ (resp., $\alpha{a)b\;=\;0$) for a, $b\;{\in}\;R$, $b{\alpha}{a)\;=\;0$ (resp., $\alpha(b)a\;=\;0$); and the ring R is called $\alpha$-shifting if it is both left and right $\alpha$-shifting. We investigate characterizations of $\alpha$-shifting rings and their related properties, including the trivial extension, Jordan extension and Dorroh extension. In particular, it is shown that for an automorphism $\alpha$ of a ring R, R is right (resp., left) $\alpha$-shifting if and only if Q(R) is right (resp., left) $\bar{\alpha}$-shifting, whenever there exists the classical right quotient ring Q(R) of R.

  • Ring chromosome 21 causes a multitude of phenotypes, ranging from severe abnormalities to normal. The proposed mechanism of ring formation, breakage of both short and long arms of a chromosome with subsequent end to end fusion, remains unproven. We encountered a 4-year-old boy who presented developmental delay, microcephaly, micrognathia, hypertelorism, low-set ears, mild optic nerve hypoplasia, cleft lip and palate, scoliosis and left foot valgus, but normal brain MRI. Chromosome study from peripheral blood showed 46,XY, r(21)(p11.2q22.1) karyotype. The authors report the first case of ring chromosome 21 in Korea with a review of the literature.
