Regional cancer epidemiology is an important basis for determining the priorities for cancer control in different countries worldwide. There is no reliable information about the pattern of head and neck cancer in western Nepal and hence an attempt was here made to evaluate the situation based on hospital data, which provide the only source in the western region of Nepal. A clinicopathological analysis of head and neck cancers treated between 2003 and 2006 in Manipal Teaching Hospital affiliated to Manipal College of Medical Sciences, Pokhara, Western Development Region, Nepal was performed. A total of 105 head and neck cancer cases were identified with a male to female ratio of 1.8:1. The median ages of male and female patients were 62 and 64 years, respectively. Ninety-seven (92.4%) of the cancer patients were suffering from carcinoma, three (2.9%) had blastoma, three (2.9%) had sarcoma, and two (1.9%) had lymphoma. The majority (61.9%) of carcinoma cases were squamous cell carcinoma followed by anaplastic carcinoma (7.2%). Of the carcinoma cases, the most common site of primary lesion was larynx (19.6%), followed by the thyroid (14.4%), the tongue and hypopharynx with 10.3% cases each. Comparative analysis among males and females did not reveal any sex difference in type of head and neck cancers. The head and neck cancer pattern revealed by the present study provides valuable leads to cancer epidemiology in western Nepal and useful information for health planning and cancer control, and future research in western Nepal.

Objectives : This study is to evaluate the status of health promotion behaviors and life styles in rural areas. Methods : A self-administered questionnaire survey was carried out for 1,350(men 461 persons, women ; 889 persons) people in rural areas ages of 30 years and older in Buk-myun, Uljn-Gun and Kikye-myun, Pohang-City, Kyungsangbuk-Do from March 13 to 25 in 1999. We established health promoting scores by using data results. Collected data was analyzed through the chi-square trend test, Student's t-test, ANOVA and multiple comparison. The data was analyzed using a SPSS/win statistical package. Results The age-adjusted prevalence of individual health promoting behavior by sex was 39.4% in men and 94.0% in women in regard to non smoking 39.4% and 92.5% in non-drinking 17.2% and 13.1% in physical exercise on a regular basis 79.8% and 80.0% in a regular diet 81.6% and 75.6% in maintaining desirable body mass index 81.2% and 78.2% in sufficient physical rest 84.2% and 82.1% in sufficient mental rest 48.4% and 40.6% in supplemental intake for health. The age-adjusted proportion for a screening examination in stomach cancer by sex was 39.9% in men and 37.1% in women 31.8% and 28.0% in liver cancer 17.0% and 12.7% in colon cancer 37.0% and 31.0% in undergoing a medical health screening. The health promoting scores were statistically significant, higher in the younger aged women's group(p<0.01). In spite of very low health promoting scores, some men thought of themselves healthy. Conclusions : The health promoting scores showed a gradual improvement as ages in men increase. Although men in ages of 30 to 40 were found to have lower scores in their health promoting scores, they were still to believe that none of health status is problematic. However, it was shown a vice-versa effect in women. They thought of their health as in a bad condition, but in measurement scores outranked their personal beliefs. In general, as ages increase one tends to consider of his or her health status poor. Therefore the plans for health improvement are needed to be come up.
The aims of the work were to examme the variability induced by EMS (ethyl methanesulfonate) mutagenesis of soybean plants, and to isolate mutants altered in nodulation and other growth characters. Seeds of two soybean cultivars, ‘Hwanggeumkong’ and ‘Baegunkong’ were treated with 30 and 50mM EMS(pH 7.0) for 6 hours and were planted directly in the field. Field emergency of$M_1 seed was averaged to be 61.0%, and frequency of plants with chlorophyll-deficient sectors of the first trifoliolate is about 0.7%. Regardless of varieties and does of EMS, $M_1 plant injury at harvest was present in plant height, pod and seed number per plant when compared to those of original-type soybean plants. The $M_2 variability of nodulation process induced by EMS treatment was found to be narrower than that of shoot dry weight. On the basis of the occurrence of chlorophyll-deficient plants, mutated cell frequency within $M_1 seed ranged from 5.3% to 84.2%, suggesting that mutation frequency on the $M_1 seed induced by EMS occurred partly and randomly regardless of varieties and doses of EMS. The putative mutant, which had more nodulation than original-type plant, was short in plant height. Sparse-nodulating soybean mutant was lower in leaf chlorophyll content and showed reduced growth.

Self-evidence factor - element related with function visualization through product structure which may make possible the consolidation of shape and function. Rigid factor - element, based on the human factors engineering, related with the safety and efficiency of users. This classification was obtained by defining major characteristics of products considering the target consumer and market characteristics. In this classification factor structuring design process which efficiently deducted a differentiated final product by synthesizing factors of higher importance as dominant factors was proposed. With this kind of factor structuring process, product differentiation may be achieved by bestowing individual characteristics to each product by combining design dominant factors associated with the product for a specific purpose from the stages of product concept development. Moreover, this may be used as an approach to actively correspond to the various and specific demands of the comsumer.
Brown leaf spot caused by Phyllosticta cruenta from 2007 to 2009 occurred severely in an herbs exhibition on Doonggulle (Polygonatum odoratum) at Gangju pond in Jeongchon-myon, Jinju city, Gyeongnam province, Korea. The typical symptoms of this disease were appeared on the brown leaf spot of leaves. Lesions on the leaves were appeared elliptical or irregular with 2~8 mm in size. Infected leaves were wilted, blighted and eventually died. Pycnidiospores and pycnidia of the fungus were abundantly formed on PDA. The optimum temperature for mycelial growth was $20{\sim}{25^{\circ}C}$. Pycnidiospores were not readily formed on PDA, colorless in color, globose~subglobose in shape, $10{\sim}18{\times}5{\sim}12{\mu}m$ in size and appendage hanged $4{\sim}15{\mu}m$ in size. Pycnidia were globose~subglobose in shape, dark brown in color and $60{\sim}162{\times}70{\sim}174{\mu}m$ in size. On the basis of mycological characteristics and pathogenicity test on host plants, the fungus was identified as Phyllosticta cruenta (Kunze: Fries) Kickx. This is the first report on the brown leaf spot of Doonggulle caused by P. cruenta in Korea.

A total of 10,753 oligotrophic bacteria were isolated from the cultivated soils of red-pepper infected by Phytophthora blight disease in various regions of Korea (Chungju, Anmyon, Taean, Andong, Eumsung and Goesan). Seven bacteria isolates among these collected resources were selected by the first screening of in vitro antagonistic assay against major several plant pathogenic fungi including Phytophthora capsici. Finally, strain 7F was selected by pot assay for a possible biological control agent against Phytophthora blight disease of pepper seedling in the greenhouse. Strain 7F was identified as Bacillus subtilis on the basis of its 16S rDNA sequence analysis and as standardized biochemical characteristics assay kits such as API20 NE. In the experiment of P. capsici zoospore infected red-pepper on the pot test, infection rate of red-pepper with nonetreatment to Phytophthora blight disease was 87%, while the rate was only 6% in the pot treated with strain 7F. This result indicated that the Bacillus subtilis strain 7F will be useful as a potential biocontrol agent for Phytophthora blight disease of red-pepper.

Purpose: The purpose of this prospective multi-institutional study was to evaluate the nutritional status of patients undergoing radiotherapy (RT) for treatment of head and neck, lung, or gastrointestinal cancer. Materials and Methods: A total of 1,000 patients were enrolled in this study at seven different hospitals in Seoul, Korea between October 2009 and May 2010. The nutritional status of patients after receiving 3 weeks of RT was evaluated using subjective global assessment (SGA). The nutritional status of each patient was rated as well nourished (A), moderately malnourished (B), or severely malnourished (C). Results: The mean age of patients in this study was $59.4{\pm}11.9$ years, and the male to female ratio was 7:3. According to the SGA results, 60.8%, 34.5%, and 4.7% of patients were classified as A, B, or C, respectively. The following criteria were significantly associated with malnutrition (SGA B or C; p < 0.001): loss of subcutaneous fat or muscle wasting (odds ratio [OR], 11.473); increased metabolic demand/stress (OR, 8.688); ankle, sacral edema, or ascites (OR, 3.234); and weight loss ${\geq}5%$ (OR, 2.299). Conclusion: SGA was applied successfully to assess the nutritional status of most patients. The prevalence of malnutrition in a radiation oncology department was 39.2%. The results of this study serve as a basis for implementation of nutrition intervention to patients being treated at radiation oncology departments.
Effect of soil moisture level on the growth of ginger plant was investigated through a pot experiment. The soil used for this study was collected from a newly reclaimed hillside land. The soil was a silty clay loam(19% sand, 57% of silt and 24% of clay), acidic in soil rection(pH 4.7, in $H_2O$) and low in organic matter content(1.2%). Soil moisture levels selected for the experiment were 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30% on weight basis. Under the soil moisture of 20-25%, the emergence ratio was 80-100%, 25 days alter planting. The performance of above ground parts was best under 20-25% of soil moisture. When the soil moisture content was far from 25%, high or low, the die out of above ground parts of ginger tended to increase. Under 20-25% of soil moisture the growth of roots was best and the occurrence of root rot was minimal.
This study determines the processing suitability of pumpkin powder by assessing, the physicochemical properties of pumpkin powder subjected to different treatments: steaming, freezing and roasting. Pumpkin powder containing 13.61-16.05% moisture, 39.40-9.53% protein, 1.35-1.43% lipid, 0.26-0.50% ash, 5.01-5.65% yield, and 9.40-10.50 mg% sugar was used. In terms of color values, the L-value of control, a-value of the steamed sample, and b-value of the roasted sample waere the highest. The steamed sampled had the highest DPPH radical-scavenging activity. Reduction in sugar concentration varied significantly by treatments conditions (p < 0.05). Carotenoid concentration was the highest in control (19.75 mg%), followed by steamed sample (17.91 mg%), frozen sample (15.17 mg%), and the roasted sample (14.04 mg%). On the basis of these results, steamed pumpkin powder was identified as the most suited for instant processing.
Background: To date, there are few data on the risk factors for severe cases and deaths associated with the 2009 pandemic H1N1 influenza A. Here, we describe the clinical and epidemiologic characteristics of patients hospitalized for pneumonia and identify those factors associated with the development of major complications (MC). Methods: We reviewed the medical records of 41 cases of pneumonia admitted to a university-affiliated tertiary hospital between Aug 26 and Dec 10, 2009, and who had confirmed H1N1 influenza A based on real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase-chain-reaction assay. There were 7,962 patients that fit these criteria. We compared the clinical features and demographic characteristics of patients who developed MC to with those who did not develop MC. Results: During the study period, 10 patients developed MC (required admission to the intensive care unit, n=10; required ventilator therapy, n=6; death, n=4). Patients with MC were significantly older than those without MC and more frequently had underlying medical conditions (90.0% vs 41.9%, p-value <0.01). In the patients with developed MC, the median $PaO_2/FiO_2$ ratio of 230.0 (145.0~347.3) at admission and pneumonia severity index (PSI) score of 141.5 (88.3~158.5) were higher than patients without MC. However, no differences were observed in laboratory findings or in viral shedding between the 2 groups. Conclusion: In hospitalized pneumonia patients of 2009 H1N1 influenza, old age, a history of malignancy, initial hypoxemia, $PaO_2/FiO_2$ ratio, and PSI score appear to be risk factor significantly related to developing MC. These findings might be the basis to influence strategies for admitting patients to an intensive or intermediate care unit and for pre-emptive antiviral therapy.
