In this research, we tried to develop the application method to water management and treatment using toxicity test method. When we measure the toxicity of environmental samples, we have to decide whether we take some countermeasures to reduce the toxicity or not. The first issue is how to set these action levels in each bioassays. A new idea was attempted to authorize indirect approach of each bioassays through the response characteristics against mixture of chemicals in water quality standard. The significant response in the cell-growth-inhibition bioassay was detected for standards-mixture(STDs). For acute toxicity assay, STDs-based implicit correlation between risks to humans and bioassay data showed a rational approach to set action levels in practical management. A simple model was proposed to describe and predict the changes in the total toxicity based on the concentrations of toxic-controlling chemicals during the ozonation of landfill leachates. On the basis of this simple model, toxicity reduction was predicted for pre-aggregation treatment before ozonation and ozone concentration during the ozonation. The method proposed in this study would be useful in optimizing water treatment processes and their running conditions in terms of the toxicity reduction efficacy.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of different sanitizers and contact times on storage quality and microbial growth in fresh-cut broccoli. Fresh broccoli samples were cut into small pieces, washed each for 90 s and 180 s in normal tap water (TW), $100\;{\mu}/l$ chlorinated water (CL, pH 7), electrolyzed water (EW, pH 7.2) containing $100\;{\mu}/l$ free chlorine, or $2\;{\mu}/l$ ozonated water ($O_3$). Then, samples were packaged in 30-${\mu}m$ polyethylene bags and stored at $5^{\circ}C$ for 9 days. No significant differences were observed in gas composition and color parameters ($L^*$, $a^*$, $b^*$, and hue angle) among different sanitizers with contact times. No off-odor was detected during the storage. A longer contact time was not effective in reducing microbial population, except with $O_3$ washing. $O_3$ with 90 s was not much effective in reducing microbial population compared with Cl or EW. However, samples washed with $O_3$ for 180 s observed the lowest numbers of total aerobic and coliform plate counts. The result suggested that, a longer contact time of ozone can be used as a potential sanitizer to maintain the microbial quality and safety of fresh-cut broccoli.
The hybrid discharge reactor was designed for the application of wastewater treatment and the removal of hazardous volatile organic substances in water. This discharge type was similar to the barrier discharge, and the surface discharge on the dielectric surface was propagated to the water surface. That caused the heterogeneous chemical reaction strongly at the interface between the working gases and the water surface. Changes of the conductivity, acidity, and the dissolved ozone with respect to the treatment time and water quantities were studied as the fundamental experiment. The concentration of hydrogen ions largely increased with increasing the treatment time and the conductivity increased with respect to the increase of water quantities under the constant other discharge parameters.

The characteristics of ozone generator targeted for air or water sterilizing in the vessel utilizing the surface corona discharge between the electrodes on the ceramic substrate was investigated by using the frequency control method. The frequency control was achieved by controlling the degree of resonance between the secondary winding inductance of transformer and the electrode capacitance of ceramic discharge plate, and the range of control was found to be 5 times of discharge current. This frequency control method showed the efficiency of 28 mP ozone generation and the stability within 3.4 % when the input voltage was varied within 40% range. The frequency control method is regarded to be more efficient way of corona discharge control compared to the conventional on/off control or voltage control methods.
Life Cycle Assessment(LCA) has been carried out to evaluate the environmental impacts of glass bottle recycle. The LCA consists of four stages such as Goal and Scope Definition, Life Cycle Inventory(LCI) Analysis, Life Cycle Impact Assessment(LCIA), and Interpretation. The LCI analysis showed that the major input materials were water, materials, sand, and crude oil, whereas the major output ones were wastewater, $CO_2$, and non-hazardous wastes. The LCIA was conducted for the six impact categories including 'Abiotic Resource Depletion', 'Acidification', 'Eutrophication', 'Global Warming', 'Ozone Depletion', and 'Photochemical Oxidant Creation'. As for Abiotic Resource Depletion, Acidification, and Photochemical Oxidant Creation, Bunker fuel oil C and LNG were major effects. As for Eutrophication, electricity and Bunker fuel oil C were major effects. As for Global Warming, electricity and LNG were major effects. As for Ozone Depletion, plate glasses were major effects. Among the six categories, the biggest impact potential was found to be Global Warming as 97% of total, but the rest could be negligible.
Ultra High molecular weight polyethylene(UHMWPE) films were photooxidized by UV/ozone irradiation. Reflectance of the irradiated films decreased in the low wavelength regions of visible light, indicating destructive interference of visible light due to roughened surface. The UV treatment developed the nano-scale roughness on the UHMWPE films surface, which increased by two-fold from 82.6 to 156.6nm in terms of peak-valley roughness. The UV irradiation caused the oxygen content of the UHMWPE film surface to increase. Water contact angle decreased from $83.2^{\circ}$ to $72.9^{\circ}$ and surface energy increased from 37.8 to 42.6mJ/$m^2$ with increasing UV energy. The surface energy change was attributed to significant contribution of polar component rather than nonpolar component indicating surface photooxidation of UHMWPE films. The increased dyeability to cationic dyes may be due to the photochemically introduced anionic and dipolar dyeing sites on the film surfaces.
Solar energy is attenuated by absorbing gases (ozone, aerosol, water vapour and mixed gas) and cloud in the atmosphere. And these are measured with solar instruments (pyranometer, phyheliometer). However, solar energy is insufficient to represent detailed energy distribution, because the distributions of instruments are limited on spatial. If input data of solar radiation model is accurate, the solar energy reaches at the surface can be calculated accurately. Recently a variety of satellite measurements are available to TERA/AQUA (MODIS), AURA (OMI) and geostationary satellites (GMS-5, GOES-9, MTSAT-1R, MTSAT-2 and COMS). Input data of solar radiation model can be used aerosols and surface albedo of MODIS, total ozone amount of OMI and cloud fraction of meteorological geostationary satellite. The solar energy reaches to the surface is calculated hourly by solar radiation model and those are accumulated monthly and annual. And these results are verified the spatial distribution and validated with ground observations.

1,4-Dioxane is an EPA priority pollutant often found in contaminated ground waters and industrial effluents. Conventional water treatment techniques are limited to decompose this compound effectively. Therefore, an advanced oxidation process system (AOP) was used for the degradation of 1,4-dioxane. This research investigates the effect of adding oxidants, such as ozone, air, and $H_2O_2$ during the UV irradiation of 1,4-dioxane solution. In order to analyze 1,4-dioxane, a modified 8270 method, which is an improved method of U.S EPA 8720, was used. Degradation efficiencies of 1,4-dioxane by only UV irradiation at various temperatures were not significant. However, The addition of oxidants and air bubbling in the UV irradiation system for 1,4-dioxane decomposition showed the higher 1,4-dioxane degradation rate. And, during AOP treatment the tendency of TOC changes was similar to that of 1,4-dioxane decomposition rate.
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a major concern because of their potential mutagenic and carcinogenic risks to human beings. One of these harmful, yet commonly observed PAHs is pyrene. Pyrene is one of the 16 PAHs listed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency as priority pollutants. The purposes of this research are to develop a method of pretreatment for PAH contaminants prior to a typical biological treatment and to demonstrate the biodegradablity of these compounds. Since pyrene is non-polar, hexane was chosen as a solvent to effectively dissolve pyrene. Pyrene solutions were treated with ozone, as it has hish oxidation capacity and electrophilic character. The intermediates and byproducts of pyrene were dissolved in alkaline water at pH 11.4 and neutralized to test for $BOD_5$, COD, and toxicity. These solutions were further ozonated and assessed of biodegradability. The first-order rate constant to was found to be between $0.121day^{-1}$ and $0.081 day^{-1}$, depending on the duration of reozonation. The $BOD_5/COD$ ratio was found to 0.66. The toxicity test showed that after 10 min of reozonation time, the byproducts and intermediates of pyrene were within the lion-toxic range of ${\pm}10%$ inhibition for E-Coli bacteria.

In the ozone disinfection unit process of a piston type batch reactor with continuous ozone analysis using a flow injection analysis (FIA) system, the CT values for 1 log inactivation of Cryptosporidium parvum by viability assays of DAPI/PI and excystation were $1.8{\sim}2.2\;mg/L{\cdot}min$ at $25^{\circ}C$ and $9.1mg/L{\cdot}min$ at $5^{\circ}C$, respectively. At the low temperature, ozone requirement rises $4{\sim}5$ times higher in order to achieve the same level of disinfection at room temperature. In a 40 L scale pilot plant with continuous flow and constant 5 minutes retention time, disinfection effects were evaluated using excystation, DAPI/PI, and cell infection method at the same time. About 0.2 log inactivation of Cryptosporidium by DAPI/PI and excystation assay, and 1.2 log inactivation by cell infectivity assay were estimated, respectively, at the CT value of about $8mg/L{\cdot}min$. The difference between DAPI/PI and excystation assay was not significant in evaluating CT values of Cryptosporidium by ozone in both experiment of the piston and the pilot reactors. However, there was significant difference between viability assay based on the intact cell wall structure and function and infectivity assay based on the developing oocysts to sporozoites and merozoites in the pilot study. The stage of development should be more sensitive to ozone oxidation than cell wall intactness of oocysts. The difference of CT values estimated by viability assay between two studies may partly come from underestimation of the residual ozone concentration due to the manual monitoring in the pilot study, or the difference of the reactor scale (50 mL vs 40 L) and types (batch vs continuous). Adequate If value to disinfect 1 and 2 log scale of Cryptosporidium in UV irradiation process was 25 $mWs/cm^2$ and 50 $mWs/cm^2$, respectively, at $25^{\circ}C$ by DAPI/PI. At $5^{\circ}C$, 40 $mWs/cm^2$ was required for disinfecting 1 log Cryptosporidium, and 80 $mWs/cm^2$ for disinfecting 2 log Cryptosporidium. It was thought that about 60% increase of If value requirement to compensate for the $20^{\circ}C$ decrease in temperature was due to the low voltage low output lamp letting weaker UV rays occur at lower temperatures.
