The peroxone process overcomes many of the limitations associated with conventional and advanced water treatment systems using chlorine disinfection and ozone oxidation processes. Ozone and hydrogen peroxide generate highly reactive hydroxyl free radical which oxidize various organic compounds and has highly removal efficiency. The key issue to operate peroxone process is developing the method to achieve high process effectiveness when scavengers that inhibit generation of OH radicals or consume OH radicals are co-existing in the process. Also many studies, to minimize inorganic oxidative by-products such as bromate and to reduce disinfection by-products after chlorination behind peroxone process, are needed. And we should consider the excess residual hydrogen peroxide in the water. On-line instruments and control strategies need to be developed to ensure effective and robust operation under conditions of varying load. If problems above mentioned are solved, peroxone process will be applied diversely for water treatment.

The effets of the pretreatments of tropical kapok fibers were evaluated in this study in terms of water sorption capacity and oil sorption capacity. The alkali treatments with NaOH resulted in the reduction of lignin, oil and hemicellulose, which were detected with FT-IR spectrum. The reduction of the lyphophilic components such as fat on kapok fiber by the ozone treatments were also measured with FT-IR spectrum. The oil sorption capacity of kapok fiber was decreased by the alkali treatments and the ozone treatments, while the water sorption capacity was increased. The liquid sorption capacity were greatly affected by the mechanical cutting of kapok fiber which exposed the big lumen of kapok fiber. The hydrophilic property of kapok fiber could be controlled by the pretreatments, which would increase the applicability of kapok fiber for preparation of various functional paper products.
Pyrene of natural and anthropogenic sources is one of the toxic, mutagenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) listed as priority pollutants. The objectives of this research are to break down pyrene by using ozonation, identify the intermediates and byproducts of pyrene, and test the biodegradability of intermediates and byproducts of pyrene in the aqueous phase. Since pyrene is non-polar, hexane was chosen as a solvent to effectively dissolve pyrene. Pyrene solutions were treated with ozone, as it has high oxidation capacity and electrophilic characteristic. After different ozonation pretreatment times (2, 3, and 10 minutes), intermediates of pyrene in the form of yellowish solid were collected from the hexane solution using a centrifuge. They were identified by gas chromatography/mass spectrometer (GC/MS). $BOD_5$, COD, and E-coli toxicity tests have been performed to assess the ozonation products.
This study was conducted to investigate the possibility of utilizing various types of nozzles and gas-liquid mixers to increase the dissolution rate of plasma gas containing ozone generated in a dielectric barrier plasma reactor. After selecting the air atomizing nozzle with the highest gas dissolution rate among the 13 types of test equipment, we investigated the influence of the operating factors on the air atomizing nozzle to determine the optimal plasma gas dissolution method. The gas dissolution rate was measured by a simple and indirect method, specifically, the measurement of KLa instead of direct measurement of ozone concentration, which requires a longer analysis time. The results showed that the KLa value of the simple mix of air and water was $0.372min^{-1}$, Which is 1.44 times higher than that ($0.258min^{-1}$) of gas emitted from a normal diffuser. Among the nozzles of the same type, the KLa value was highest for the nozzle having the smallest orifice diameter. Among the 13 types of devices tested, the nozzle with highest KLa value was the M22M nozzle, which is a gas-liquid spray nozzle. The relationship between water circulation flow rate and KLa value in the experimental range was linear. The air supply flow rate and KLa value showed a parabolic-type correlation, while the optimum air supply flow rate for the water circulation flow rate of 1.8 L / min is 1.38 times.
In this study, ozone oxidation experiment was carried out for the removal of fluorescent whitening agent which is widely used in textile dyeing and paper industry. The stilbene fluorescent whitening agent has been industrialized since the earliest, and the amount of current production is the highest. Due to the characteristics of the fluorescent whitening agent that can not be removed by conventional wastewater treatment methods, the fluorescent whitening agent in wastewater treatment has difficulty in using as recycled water in the process. Pre-treatment ozone oxidation experiment was conducted prior to the introduction of Membrane Bio Reactor(MBR) treatment process by converting biodegradable materials into biodegradable materials. The removal efficiencies of fluorescent whitening agents, a diaminostilbenedisulfonic acid derivative by ozone oxidation were evaluated by $UV_{254}$ Scan, $COD_{Mn}$, T-N and color using a synthetic wastewater sample ($COD_{Mn}=433.0mg/{\ell}$) and paper and paper mill wastewater ($COD_{Mn}=157.2mg/{\ell}$).

Pd/activated carbon (Pd/AC) and Pd/alumina (Pd/AO) catalysts were prepared by the impregnation of palladium into activated carbon and alumina. The catalytic characteristics according to the kinds of support materials were compared. The decomposition efficiencies of ozone according to kinds of support materials are about the same when these were compared by adding 10 g of catalysts into the water saturated with ozone. The decomposition efficiencies and the oxidation characteristics (TOC, $COD_{Cr}$) of dichloroacetic acid were compared with the ozone only process and the catalytic ozonations using Pd/activated carbon and Pd/alumina catalysts. The decomposition efficiencies of dichloroacetic acid by catalytic ozonations were better than the one by ozone only process, but there was slight difference of the one between Pd/activated carbon and Pd/alumina catalyst. The decomposition efficiency of dichloroacetic acid was increased with increasing ozone dose at a constant concentration of dichloroacetic acid, but the one was little increased with increasing ozone dose at more than 1.0 L/min of ozone dose. It was seemed that the bicarbonate and the chloric ion formed throughout the decomposition of dichloroacetic acid acted as the scavenger of hydroxyl radical.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was the investigation of bromide and bromate in drinking water of water supply plants, mineral springs and small water supply system located in northern area of Gyeonggi province. Methods: Analytical method was based on EPA 326.0 to use Postcolumn reaction (PCR). The instrument was 887 professional UV/VIS detector IC manufactured in Metrohm. Results: Bromate was detected at $0.5{\sim}2.4{\mu}g/L$ in tap water from 5 water supply plants. These plants were used as disinfection method for sodium hypochlorite and on-site chlorine that causes generate bromate as a by products even if not used ozone. Conclusions: The bromate was detected up to $2.5{\mu}g/Lin$ drinking water in northern Gyeonggi area that showed within $10{\mu}g/L$ for standard of tap water. However, the continuous monitoring of bromate is necessary in drinking water.

Fish culture is constantly threatened by various infectious diseases which are largely transmitted by water. Plasma technology is being used to sterilize polluted water in many industries. In this study, two bacterial pathogens Aeromonas salmonicida and Streptococcus iniae, and a virus (viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus, VHSV) were subjected to plasma water that was produced by a corona discharge system. Growth of A. salmonicida was greatly inhibited from 105.61 CFU/ml in positive control to 103.51 CFU/ml in treated group by only 60 sec contact with plasma water. Similarly, S. iniae was inhibited from 105.85 CFU/ml to 103.40 CFU/ml. VHSV titer also decreased from 104.1 TCID50/ml to 101.45 TCID50/ml by the same treatment. Activation of water by the plasma was confirmed by the existence of ozone in the plasma water. These results suggest that plasma water could efficiently disinfect fish pathogens, possibly by the action of reactive oxygen species contained in the plasma water.
The main goals of this work are to investigate the effect of molecular weight distribution(MWD) and activated carbon adsorption capacity after conventional coagulation and enhanced coagulation. The ozonation was very effective to decompose the NOM to smaller size and to remove molecular smaller than 1,000. The concentration of DOC was reduced 0.25mg/L and 0.56mg/L by the conventional coagulation and the enhanced coagulation, respectively The conventional coagulation was not effective to remove NOM. However, the enhanced coagulation was effective to remove MW bigger than 10,000. The higher MW was shifted to smaller weight by ozonation in the raw water and the after conventional coagulation. After enhanced coagulation the MW had not changed significantly by ozonation. Also, it was observed that the ozone dosage did not have significant impact on MW shifting to smaller size. The adsorption capacity simulated by IAST comparing K values showed that the adsorption capacity was not impacted by ozone doses. There was very strong correlation between MW smaller than 10,000 and the mid- and strongly adsorbable fractions.
