  • To select the best oxygen carrier particle for syngas fueled chemical-looping combustor, the reduction reactivity and carbon deposition characteristics were determined in a thermogravimetric analyzer. Four kinds of oxygen carrier particles (NiO/bentonite, $NiO/LaAl_{11}O_{18}$, $Co_xO_y/CoAl_2O_4$, $NiO/NiAl_2O_4$) were tested with the simulated syngas (30% $H_2$, 10% $CO_2$, 60% CO) as a reduction gas. With each of these particles, the maximum conversion and oxygen transfer capacity increase with increasing the reduction temperature At the given experimental range, the optimum operating temperature to maximize oxygen transfer rate is found to be $900^{\circ}C$ and carbon deposition on the particles could avoid at the temperature above $800^{\circ}C$. Among four kinds of oxygen carrier particles, the NiO-based particles exhibits better reactivity than the CoO-based particle. Moreover, the NiO/bentonite particle produces the best reactivity based on the oxygen transfer rate and the degree of carbon deposition. The measured oxygen transfer rate increases as the metal oxide content in NiO/bentonite particle is increased thereby higher metal oxide contents could provide stable operation of chemical-looping combustor.

  • Tolerance on temperature and salinity of Ruditapes philippinarum was investigated in five different salinity, $32.0,\;25.6,\;19.20,\;12.80,\;6.40,\;3.20{\%_{\circ}}$ with increasing continuously $1^{\circ}C/day 2^{\circ}C/day\;and\;3^{\circ}C/day$ water temperature. R. philippinarum was acclimated to $18^{\circ}C\;and 25^{\circ}C$ before the experiment. Oxygen consumption rates and filtration rates of R. philippinarum were estimated during the experiment. $LT_{50}$ of two stocks acclimated to $18^{\circ}C\;and\;25^{\circ}C$ were similar. However, the maximum tolerance temperature of a stock acclimated $18^{\circ}C\;was\;36^{\circ}C$ while a stock acclimated $25^{\circ}C\;was\;37^{\circ}C$. This suggested that the higher water temperature a stock acclimated, the higher tolerance a stock showed, The surival rates of R. philippina겨m with the changes in salinities decreased below $19,2\;{\%_{\circ}}\;at\;18^{\circ}C\;and\;25^{\circ}C$. Oxygen consumption rates in the experimental group acclimated at $18^{\circ}C$ reduced with decreasing of salinity concentrations, while those of the experimental group acclimated at $25^{\circ}C$ showed irregular trend. Filtration rates revealed the maximum at 24{\~}28^{\circ}C$ in the experimental group acclimated ai $18^{\circ}C\;and\;31{\~}33^{\circ}C\;in\;those\;at\;25{\circ}C$. Filtraton rates shanty decreased at the lower salinity concentrations.

  • This study was designed to investigate the effects of silk fibroin powder (Mw 500) on oxidative stress and membrane fluidity in liver membranes of rats. Sprague-Dawley (SD) male rats (160$\pm$10g) were fed basic diet (control group), and experimental diets (SEP-2.5 and SFP-5.0 groups) added 2.5 and 5.0 g/kg BW/day for 6 weeks. Cholesterol levels resulted in a significant decrease (12.1% and 9.0%, respectively) in the liver mitochondria and microsomes of SEP-5.0 group compared with control group. Membrane fluidity as significantly increased (16.1% and 16.5%, 5.8% and 17.4%) in the liver mitochondria and microsomes were significantly inhibited (16.1% and 18.3%, 8.1% and 15.1%, respectively) at the SFP-2.5 and SEP-5.0 groups compared with control group. Induced oxygen radicals (BOR) in liver mitochondria and microsomes were significantly inhibited (16.1% and 18.3%, 8.1% and 15.1%, respectively) at the SFP-2.5 and SEP-5.0 groups compared with control group. Induced oxygen radicals (IOR) in liver microsomes were significantly inhibited (17.0% and 26.6%, respectively) at the SFP-2.5 and SFP-5.0 groups compared with control group, but IOR in liver mitochondria was significantly inhibited about 12.3% at the SWP-400 group only compared with control group. Lipid peroxide (LPO) levels were significantly decreased (8.3% and 18.0%, 13.4% and 18.4%, respectively) in the liver mitochondria and microsomes of SFP-2.5 and SFP-5.0 groups compared with control group. Oxidized protein (OP) levels were dose-dependently decreased (5.4% and 11.6%, 19.0% and 24.4%, respaectively) in the iver mitochondria and microsomes of SFP-2.5 and SFP-5.0 groups compared with control group. These results suggest that administration of SFP may play an effective role in attenuating an oxidative stress and increasing a membrane fluidity in liver membranes.

  • Water temperature (WT) is a major environmental factor of metabolic rate in fish; it directly affects food intake, ammonia excretion, oxygen consumption (OC), growth, and survival. Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate changes in the OC and the hematological response of olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus because of WT changes. In Exp. I, WT was increased from 20℃ to 29℃ within 18 h and maintained at 29℃ for 96 h. Then, WT was decreased from 29℃ to 20℃ within 18 h and maintained at 20℃ for 24 h. In Exp. II, WT was decreased from 20℃ to 11℃ within 18 h and maintained at 11℃ for 96 h. Then, WT was increased from 11℃ to 20℃ within 18 h and maintained at 20℃ for 24 h. The Exp. III maintained that the Exp. I and II was consecutively. In Exp. I, the OC increased from 116.7 mg O2 kg-1 hr-1 to 317.5 mg O2 kg-1 hr-1 with increasing WT. In Exp. II, the OC decreased from 96.5 mg O2 kg-1 hr-1 to 71.3 mg O2 kg-1 hr-1 with decreasing WT. In Exp. III, OC tended to increase or decrease in inverse proportion to temperature. In Exp. I, cortisol, glucose, and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) values increased with increasing WT. In Exp. II, Cl-, osmolality, AST, and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) values significantly changed during the experimental period: glucose values increased, whereas cortisol values decreased with decreasing WT. Exp. III was shown to be a more stressful environment to olive flounder than Exp. I and Exp. II. The results of our study will be useful for evaluating current aquaculture procedures of olive flounder and developing techniques to minimize stress in aquaculture farms.

  • Oxygen isotopic composition(${\delta}^{18}O$) of walleye pollock, Theragra chalcogramma, otoliths were measured to investigate interannual and regional correlation with habitat temperature. Specimens were collected from fishermen in Korea and Japan between $1997{\sim}1999$, while seawater temperatures were obtained from Korean and Japanese Oceanographic Data Centers. Seawater temperature was generally lower off the eastern Korean Peninsula than off eastern Hokkaido(Japan). Sagittal otoliths were removed for measurement of ${\delta}^{18}O$ using a micro-drilling technique. In most cases, ${\delta}^{18}O$ and habitat temperature exhibited negative relationship in Korean and Japanese waters. Higher ${\delta}^{18}O$ was observed in Korean pollock compared to Japanese pollock. The marginal parts of otoliths exhibited higher ${\delta}^{18}O$ than cores from both regions. This is an indication that somatic growth of walleye pollock occurs in deeper and cooler waters. Interannual variation in ${\delta}^{18}O$ was also observed. Mean ${\delta}^{18}O$ values acquired from 1997 otoliths were lower(2.15%) than those of 1998(2.67%) and 1999 (2.65%) in Korean pollock. These measurements coincided with changes in observed temperature in Korean waters, in which mean seawater temperature was warmer in 1997 than in 1998 and 1999. In Japanese waters, mean seawater temperature was lowest in 1997, which coincided with highest ${\delta}^{18}O$ values in the same year.

  • In an attempt to identify the neuroprotective effect of Cudrania tricuspidata (CT) leaves against ROS (reactive oxygen species)-induced oxidative stress in neuronal cells, the extracts from CT leaves were investigated using PC12 cells and N18-RE-105 cells. The methanolic and ethanolic extracts from CT were denoted as CTM (Cudrania tricuspidata Leaves methanolic extracts) and CTE (Cudrania tricuspidata Leaves ethanolic extracts), respectively. The neuroprotective effects of the extracts were measured by DCF-DA assay, MTT reduction assay, and LDH release assay. The PC12 cells exposed to $H_2O_2$-induced oxidative stress and the N18-RE-105 cells exposed to glutamate-induced oxidative stress were treated with various concentrations of CTM and CTE. The results, CTM treatments resulted in the induction of a dose-dependent protective effect in PC12 cells and N18-RE-105 cells. Interestingly, CTE also showed neuroprotective effect in PC12 cells and N18-RE-105 cells. Therefore, these results suggest that CTM and CTE could be a new potential candidate as neuroprotective agents against ROS-induced oxidative stress in neuronal cells.
