Purpose: To investigate the effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) on chronic low back pain in elderly patients with impaired functioning in daily life. Methods: 35 subjects with chronic low back pain were randomly allocated into two groups, HBOT group and Placebo group. We applied TENS and mechanical massage to the lower back in both groups. Then 35% oxygen at 1.4 ATA was given to the HBOT group and atmospheric oxygen at 1 ATA to the placebo group. Results: Comparing the HBOT group with the placebo group after performing interventions six times in 2 weeks, a statistically significant difference in the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) scores was observed between the two groups. There was a statistically significant difference in VAS and ODI scores (56% and 34.97% respectively) between the HBOT group and the placebo group. A statistically significant difference was ascertained in the degree of variables VAS and ODI in the HBOT group. Conclusion: Application of HBOT in chronic low back pain could be beneficial for reducing pain and could help in functional recovery.
Effect of mercury (Hg) toxicity on survival, growth, feed efficiency and oxygen consumption were examined in the juvenile olive flounder. Paralichthys olivaceus. Fishes were exposed to sublethal concentrations of Hg ranging from 0 to 0.13mg/L for 6 weeks. Hg reduced survival rate in a concentration and exposure period-dependent way and suddenly reduction occurred at Hg concentrations greater than 0.05mg/L after 6 weeks. Growth rate and feed efficiency also significantly decreased at greater than 0.028 and 0.05 mg/L respectively. Oxygen consumption rate was significantly decreased to 25 and 32% than that of the control at the Hg concentration of 0.05 and 0.13 mg/L respectively. These results suggest that Hg toxicity inhibit physiological function including growth, feed efficiency and oxygen consumption in the juvenile olive flounder, resulting in survival failure at high concentration.

We have investigated the thermal reaction property and the oxygen behavior of TiN/Ti/Si structure after different hear treatments using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy measurements. During the heat treatment in N$_2$ amibient, the considerable amount of oxygen atoms incorporates into TiN/Ti/Si Structures. It is found that oxygen atoms pile up at the top surface of TiN and TiN/Ti interface, forming a compound of TiO$_2$ above $600^{\circ}C$. Inside the TiN film, the oxygen content increases as the annealing temperature increases, mostly TiO and Ti$_2$O$_3$ rather than thermodynamically stable TiO$_2$. Above the annealing temperature of 55$0^{\circ}C$, the TiSi$_2$ formation has initiated. One thing to note is that a severe blistering is observed in the sample annealed at $600^{\circ}C$, due to (1) the difference of thermal expansion coefficient between TiN and Si` (2) the compressive stress induced by the volume reduction caused by the Ti-Silicide grain while elevating temperatures.
A successful combination of “oxygen-assisted chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process” and Co catalyst nanoparticles to grow highly pure single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) was demonstrated. Recently, it was reported that addition of small amounts of oxygen during CVD process dramatically increased the purity and yield of carbon nanotubes. However, this strategy could not be applied for discrete Fe nanoparticle catalysts from which appropriate yields of SWNTs could be grown directly on solid substrates, and fabricated into field effect transistors (FETs) quite efficiently. The main reason for this failure is due to the carbothermal reduction which results in SiO2 nanotrench formation. We found that the oxygen-assisted CVD process could be successfully applied for the growth of highly pure SWNTs by switching the catalyst from Fe to Co nanoparticles. The topological morphologies and p-type transistor electrical transport properties of the grown SWNTs were examined by using atomic force microscope (AFM), Raman, and from FET devices fabricated by photolithography.
We report on the photoelectrochemical properties of partially reduced mesoporous titania thin films. The fabrication is achieved by synthesizing mesoporous titania thin films through the self-assembly of a titania precursor and a block copolymer, followed by aging and calcination, and heat-treatment under a $H_2$ (1 torr) environment. Depending on the temperature used for the reaction with $H_2$, the degree of the reduction (generation of oxygen vacancies) of the titania is controlled. The oxygen vacancies induce visible light absorption, and decrease of resistance while the mesoporosity is practically unaltered. The photoelectrochemical activity data on these films, by measuring their photocurrent-potential behavior in 1 M NaOH electrolyte under AM 1.5G 100 mW $cm^{-2}$ illumination, show that the three effects of the oxygen vacancies contribute to the enhancement of the photoelectrochemical properties of the mesoporous titania thin films. The results show that these oxygen deficient $TiO_2$ mesoporous thin films hold great promise for a solar hydrogen generation. Suggestions for the materials design for improved photoelectrochemical properties are made.
This study was carried out to examine the effects of bis (tribytyltin)oxide (TBT), endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs). on the changes of survival, growth and oxygen consumption rate in the oliver flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus. Oliver Flounders were exposed to sublethal concentration of TBT (0, 1.67, 3.20, 6.30 and 12.50 $\mu\textrm{g}$/L) during 6 weeks. Survival rate was decreased in a concentration and exposure period-dependent way and suddenly the reduction of more than 20% occurred at TBT concentration greater than 3.20 $\mu\textrm{g}$/L. after exposure 6 weeks. Growth rate and feed efficiency significantly decreased at concentration greater than 3.20 $\mu\textrm{g}$/L. Oxygen consumption rate was also decreased in a concentration-dependent way and significantly decreased to 17,48 and 67% than that of the control at the TBT concentration of 3.20, 6.32 and 12.50 $\mu\textrm{g}$/L, respectively. This study revealed that high TBT concentration ($\geq$3.20 $\mu\textrm{g}$/L) reduced growth and oxygen consumption rates of the juvenile oliver flounder suggesting potential influence on the natural mortality of Paralichthys olivaceus in the coastal areas.

To investigate an effect of the ethanol extract of Lycium chinense(EELC) on the activities of enzymes scavenging oxygen free radicals or detoxicating alcohol. The ground Lycium chinense was extracted with 30% edible ethanol and then diluted with 6% ethanol to contain 2% EELC(w/v). Three different groups of male Sprague-Dawley rats had taken a drink EELC, ethanol(ETH) or water(control), respectively for 2 months. At the end of experimental period, the animals were sacrificed and obtained the following findings. The EELC-treated animals showed the highest activity of hepatic glucose-6-phosphatase among three groups. The activities of xanthine oxidase and cytochrome p-450 from EELC treatment group were lower than those from ETH-treated group. However, the activity of superoxide dismutase was higher in the EELC-treated group than the ETH-treated(p<0.005). Furthermore, hepatic alcohol or aldehyde dehydrogenase activity, and glutathione content and glutathione peroxidase were significantly higher in EELC-treated animals than in ETH-treated those. The activity of glutathione S-transferase in liver was appeared the orderly higher value in EELC, ETH and control-treated group. As the result, EELC may affect the reduction of oxygen free radical production and help the detoxication of ethanol.
The present experiments were performed to confirm the hypothesis that xanthine oxidase[XOD], as a source and mechanism of oxygen radical production, plays an important role in the genesis of the reperfusion injury of ischemic myocardium. The experimental ischemic-reperfusion injury was induced in isolated, Langendorff preparations of rat hearts by 60 min. Of global ischemia with aortic clamping followed by 20 min. of reperfusion with oxygenated Krebs-Henseleit solution[pH 7.4, 37*C]. The results were as follows: 1. The releases of creatine phosphokinase and a lipid peroxidation product, malondialdehyde[MDA] into the coronary effluent were abruptly increased upon reperfusion of ischemic hearts. The increases of the enzyme and MDA were suppressed significantly in the hearts removed from rats pretreated with allopurinol, a specific XOD inhibitor[20mg/kg, oral, 24 hrs and 2 hrs before study]. This effect of allopurinol was comparable to that of oxygen radical scavengers, superoxide dismutase[5, 000U] and catalase[12, 500 U]. 2. The increased SOD-inhibitable reduction of ferricytochrome C, which was infused to the hearts starting with reperfusion, was significantly suppressed in allopurinol pretreated hearts. 3. Activities of myocardial XOD were compared in the normal control hearts and the ischemic ones. Total enzyme activities were not different in both hearts. However, comparing with the control, the ischemic ones showed higher activity in 0-form and lower activities in D-form and D/O-form. 4. In the ischemic hearts, phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride, a serine protease inhibitor, prevented significantly the increase of 0-form and the decreases of D and D/O-form, while thiol reagents did not affect the changes of the enzyme. 5. The increase of 0-form and the decreases of D and D/0-form were not significant in both calcium-free perfused and pimozide, a calmodulin inhibitor, treated ischemic hearts. 6. The SOD-inhibitable reduction of ferricytochrome C were suppressed by PMSF and pimozide treatment as well as by calcium-free perfusion. It is suggested from these results that in the ischemic rat myocardium, xanthine oxidase is converted to oxygen radical producing 0-form by calcium, calmodulin-dependent proteolysis and plays a contributing role in the genesis of ischemic-reperfusion injury by producing oxygen free radicals.

Age from 4 to 6, FPRS, Oxygen saturation and Pain behavioral check list were significantly different in theraputic intervention group when compare to control group. But the heart rate were not significantly different when compare to control group. 3. Age from 7 to 9, FPRS and Pain behavioral check list were significantly lower in therapeutic intervention group when compare to control group but Heart rate and Oxygen saturation were not significantly different when compare to control group. Conclusion : The results of this study concludes that most children experience acute pain during IV therapy and it can be reduced by age specific therapeutic intervention and by change of surrounding environment.
Low-pressure plasmas (LPPs) were generated with different gases such as air, oxygen and nitrogen, and their inactivation effects against Escherichia coli were compared in order to evaluate the potential as a non-thermal microbial disinfection technology. Homogeneous plasmas were generated under low pressure below 1 Torr at gas flow rate of 350 mL/min regardless the types of gases. Temperature increases by LPPs were not detrimental showing less than ${10^{\circ}C}$ and ${25^{\circ}C}$ increases after 5 and 10 min treatments, respectively. The smallest temperature increase was observed with air LPP, and followed by oxygen and nitrogen LPPs. More than 5 log reduction in E. coli was achieved by 5 min LPP treatment but the destruction effect was retarded afterward. The LPP inactivation was represented by a iphasic first order reaction kinetics. The highest inactivation rate constant was achieved in air LPP and followed by oxygen and nitrogen LPPs. The small D-values of the LPP also supported its potentialities as a non-thermal food surface disinfection technology in addition to the substantial microbial reduction of more than 5 logs.
