  • To evaluate training effect, the step exercise was loaded to three mem for nine weeks. Step score, cardiopulmonary functions and blood constituents were measured before, during and after the test exercise (50 cm-step exercise and treadmill running), and were compared with the pre-tranining values. The results were as follows: 1) By the training, Harvard step score increased remarkably, expecially in the early stage of training. 2) The post-training values of maximal oxygen uptake increased very significantly and it seemed to be due to increases of stroke volume and tissue oxygen extraction. 3) After the training, the degree of increase in expired volume was small during the treadmill exercise. 4) By the training, increasing rate of respiratory quotient lessened during the exercise and it was considered to be caused by the decreases of carbohydrate consumption and anaerobic metabolism. 5) The blood cholesterol concentrations were harldy changed with this degree of training. 6) The blood lactate level decreased during the recovery periods and the values of the recovery 0 and 5 minutes decreased remarkably, in comparison with the pre-trained values. The above results suggest that the 9 week-training of the step exercise brings about the enhancement of circulatory functions and tissue oxygen utilization, and changes of food-stuffs used during the exercise.

  • Cochtodinium votykrikoides -related red tide is the most notorious tidal bloom, resulting in mass mortality to marineanimals. This study aimed to test the effect of C. polyknkoides on the lethality to Haliotis discus hannai under con-trolled conditions. The oxygen demand of C. polykrikoides increases to reach its peak duhng the night, while the oxy-gen usage by H. discus hannai was continuously decreased with a threshold of 2 mg L U. The addition of C.polykrikoides did not effect the respiration of the H. discus hannai. However, the usage of oxygen by C. polykrikoidesduhng the night may lead to anoxia in the animal. With aeration, the level of dissolved oxygen (D.O.) was between6.06 and 7.28 mg LU; 90% of abalones survived even with a high concentration of C. potykrikoides (9000 cells mL U).Without aeration (3 mg LU of D.O.), however, the H. discus hannai suffocated immediately. Once 20 hours hadelapsed, all of the abalones were dead. The density of the H. discus hannai population contributed to their mortality. Therefore, aeration during the night and maintaining lower abalone densities is the best way to promote the sur-vivorship of H. discus hannai during a C. polykrikoides red tide.

  • Effect of oxygen content in the ultrafine tungsten powder fabricated by electrical explosion of wire method on the behvior of spark plasma sintering was investigated. The initial oxygen content of 6.5 wt% of as-fabricated tungsten powder was reduced to 2.3 and 0.7 wt% for the powders which were reduction-treated at $400^{\circ}C$ for 2 hour and at $500^{\circ}C$ for 1h in hydrogen atmosphere, respectively. The reduction-treated tungsten powders were spark-plasma sintered at $1200-1600^{\circ}C$ for 100-3600 sec. with applied pressure of 50 MPa under vacuum of 0.133 Pa. Maximun sindered density of 97% relative density was obtained under the condition of $1600^{\circ}C$ for 1h from the tungsten powder with 0.7 wt% oxygen. Sintering activation energy of $95.85kJ/mol^{-1}$ was obtained, which is remarkably smaller than the reported ones of $380{\sim}460kJ/mol^{-1}$ for pressureless sintering of micron-scale tungsten powders.

  • This study was investigated to the effect of oxygen barrier of four different packaging films of the shelf life of proessed meat product by the simulated distribution test and storage test. The microbial growth, pH, VBN content, TBA value, color change and sensory evaluation were compared during the 2-month storage period at 4, 10, $20^{\circ}C$ after finished the simulated distribution test. The oxygen transmission rates ($cc/m^2$ day) were BF001: 27,88; BF003; 12.30;NY; 77.98; EVOM; 0.41 respectively. The packaging films were not effected on the changes of pH, VBN content, TBA value and color during the storage period. The aerobic microbial growth was increased only at $20^{\circ}C$ in the order of growth rate in the following films;NY > BF001 > BF003 > EVOH. Therefore, the microbial growth was affected significantly by the properties of oxygen barrier off packaging films and it should be an indicator of establishing the shelf life processed meat product.

  • A significant amount of nitrous oxide ($N_2O$), which is one of the serious greenhouse gases, is emitted from nitrification and denitrification of wastewater. Batch wastewater nitrifications with enriched nitrifiers were carried out under oxygen-limited condition with synthetic (without organic carbon) and real wastewater (with organic carbon) in order to find out the effect of ammonium concentration on $N_2O$ emission. Cumulated $N_2O$-N emission reached 3.0, 5.7, 6.2, and 13.5 mg from 0.4 l of the synthetic wastewater with 50, 100, 200, and 500 mg/l ${NH_4}^+$-N, respectively, and 1.0 mg from the real wastewater with 125 mg/l ${NH_4}^+$-N. The results indicate that $N_2O$ emission increased with ammonium concentration and the load. The ammonium removal rate and nitrite concentration also increased $N_2O$ emission. Comparative analysis of $N_2O$ emission from synthetic and real wastewaters revealed that wastewater nitrification under oxygen-limited condition emitted more $N_2O$ than that of heterotrophic denitrification. Summarizing the results, it can be concluded that denitrification by autotrophic nitrifiers contributes significantly to the $N_2O$ emission from wastewater nitrification.

  • $SnO-2$ thin films for thin film secondary battery anode were deposited n glass substrate with stain-less steel collector and charge/discharge experiments were conducted to investigate feasibility of $SnO-2$ thin film as a new anode material. The as-deposited films were pure $SnO-2$ phase which is not related to deposition condition. The grain size on the surface of as-deposited films increased with increase of oxygen partial pressure. However, the grain size did not show any change above oxygen partial pressure of 80:20. The surface roughness of the as-deposited films increased after decreasing because of resputtering effect of oxygen negative ion in plasma. All films showed typical $SnO-2$ anode characteristics which has a side effect at the first cycle, which is not related to the deposition condition. The charge/discharge experiments of 200cycles indicated that capacity of $SnO-2$ films depended on oxygen contents and surface roughness. The cycle characteristics was determined by initial charge/discharge reaction. The $SnO-2$ film with low initial capacity showed more stable cycle characteristics than film with high initial capacity.

  • Hafnium oxide thin films for gate dielectric were deposited at $300^{\circ}C$ on p-type Si (100) substrates by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) and annealed in $O_2$ and $N_2$ ambient at various temperatures. The effect of hydrogen treatment in 4% $H_2$ at $350^{\circ}C$ for 30 min on the electrical properties of $HfO_2$for gate dielectric was investigated. The flat-band voltage shifts of $HfO_2$capacitors annealed in $O_2$ambient are larger than those in $N_2$ambient because samples annealed in high oxygen partial pressure produces the effective negative charges in films. The oxygen loss in $HfO_2$films was expected in forming gas annealed samples and decreased the excessive oxygen contents in films as-deposited and annealed in $O_2$ or $N_2$ambient. The CET of films after hydrogen forming gas anneal almost did not vary compared with that before hydrogen gas anneal. Hysteresis of $HfO_2$films abruptly decreased by hydrogen forming gas anneal because hysteresis in C-V characteristics depends on the bulk effect rather than $HfO_2$/Si interface. The lower trap densities of films annealed in $O_2$ambient than those in $N_2$were due to the composition of interfacial layer becoming closer to $SiO_2$with increasing oxygen partial pressure. Hydrogen forming gas anneal at $350^{\circ}C$ for samples annealed at various temperatures in $O_2$and $N_2$ambient plays critical role in decreasing interface trap densities at the Si/$SiO_2$ interface. However, effect of forming gas anneal was almost disappeared for samples annealed at high temperature (about $800^{\circ}C$) in $O_2$ or $N_2$ambient.

  • This study was undertaken to determine whether Juglandis Semen (JAS) extract exerts protective effect against oxidant-induced inhibition of $Na^+-pump$ activity in cerebral cortex. $Na^+-pump$ activity was estimated by measuring ouabain-sensitive oxygen consumption. The oxygen consumption significantly inhibited by 1mM t-butylhydroperoxide (tBHP), which was prevented by addition of 2% JAS extract. The oxygen consumption was increased by an increase in $Na^+$ concentration from 5 to 100 mM, $K^+$ concentration from 0.5 to 10 mM, and $Mg^{2+}$ concentration from 0.2 to 5 mM. These changes in ion concentrations did not affect the inhibitory effect of tBHP and protective action of JAS on oxygen consumption. tBHP (l mM) produced a significant increase in lipid peroxidation in cerebral cortex, which was prevented by 2% JAS extraction. These results suggest that JAS exerts protective effect against tBHP-induced inhibition of $Na^+-pump$ activity in the cerebral cortex, probably through action as antioxidant.

  • The adverse effect of diving on the fetus may extend beyond n gestational process and outcome. Primiparous Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned to one of ten exposure schedules during gestatred $PO_2$ level, the following question about the effect of exposing a pregnant female to high partial pressure of inspired oxygen has been raised. 'What effect does an increased maternal $PIO_2$ have on fetal arterial $PO_2$ and therefore on possible fetal oxygen poisoning?' This study was carried out to observe the effects of maternal hyperoxia on gestational process and outcome. Primiparous Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned to one of ten exposure schedules during gestation. The treatment groups were subjected to either the high concentration of oxygen, or the high atmospheric pressure. On day 21 of gestation, laparotomy was performed to examine for number and distribution of implantations and live and resorbing embryos. Fetuses were weighed, and examined for gross malformations. Subsequently, they were fixed, measured in physical parameters, and examined for visceral anomalies. Minor visceral anomalies and anatomical variation was not found. Similarily, there were no significant differences when number of resorptions, mean fetal weights, pregnancy interruption rate were compared by analysis of variance. These results indicate that exposing rats to oxygen at increased atmospheric pressure doese not affect fetal health or survival.

  • Many researchers have paid attention to the studies on the interaction between non-thermal plasma and aqueous solutions for biomedical applications. The gas composition in the plasma is very important. Oxygen and nitrogen are the main gases of interest in biological applications. Especially, we focus on the oxygen concentration. In this experiment, we studied the role of oxygen concentration in plasma induced chemical reactions in solution. At first, the amount of ions are measured according to changing the oxygen concentration. And we checked the relationship between these ions and pH value. Secondly, when the oxygen concentration is changed, it identified the type and amount of radical generated by the plasma. In order to confirm the effect of these chemical property change to biological material, hemoglobin and RBCs are chosen. RBCs are one of the common basic biological cells. Thirdly, when plasma treated according to oxygen concentration in nitrogen feeding gas, oxidation of hemoglobin and RBC is checked. Finally, membrane oxidation of RBC is measured to examine the relation between hemoglobin oxidation and membrane damage through relative hemolysis and Young's modulus. Our results suggest that reactive species generated by the plasma differsdepending on the oxygen concentration changes. The pH values are decreased when oxygen concentration increased. OH decrease and NO increase are also observed. These reactive species makes change of chemical properties of solution. We also able to confirm that the difference in these reactive species to affect the oxidation of the Hb and RBCs. The Hb and RBCs are more oxidized with the high oxygen concentration conditions. But membrane is damaged more by plasma treatment with only nitrogen gas. It is shown that red blood cells membrane damage and oxidation of hemoglobin are not directly related.
