  • Polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based carbon fibers have high specific strength, elastic modulus, thermal resistance, and thermal conductivity. Due to these properties, they have been increasingly widely used in various spheres including leisure, aviation, aerospace, military, and energy applications. However, if exposed to air at high temperatures, they are oxidized, thus weakening the properties of carbon fibers and carbon composite materials. As such, it is important to understand the oxidation reactions of carbon fibers, which are often used as a reinforcement for composite materials. PAN-based carbon fibers T300 and T700 were isothermally oxidized in air, and microstructural changes caused by oxidation reactions were examined. The results showed a decrease in the rate of oxidation with increasing burn-off for both T300 and T700 fibers. The rate of oxidation of T300 fibers was two times faster than that of T700 fibers. The diameter of T700 fibers decreased linearly with increasing burn-off. The diameter of T300 also decreased with increasing burn-off but at slower rates over time. Cross-sectional observations after oxidation reactions revealed hollow cores in the longitudinal direction for both T300 and T700 fibers. The formation of hollow cores after oxidation can be traced to differences in the fabrication process such as the starting material and final heat treatment temperature.

  • Hemolymph is oxidized and darkens visibly during the collection from silkworm due to the activity of tyrosinase in it. Toxic quinones are produced by the oxidation and consequently inhibit the cell growth. Heat treatment can be used to prevent the oxidation ; however, the oxidation may occur during the collection of hemolymph before it is heat-treated. It makes the hemolymph collection difficult especially on a large-scale preparation. Hemolymphs collected from 257 different strains of silkworms were examined to select the slowly oxidized hemolymphs. Hemolymphs collected from mutant strains such as Lemone, TBO, Cre, Y4, and wEb showed relatively slow color changes. Oxidation rates of the hemolymphs were measured by the absorbance change using a spectrophotometer. The hemolymph of wEb showed the slowest oxidation. The absorbance of this mutant hemolymph reached the saturation value at 20$^{\circ}C$ in 450 min, whereas the total oxidation time of the wild-type (Baekokjam) hemolymph at the same temperature was 120 min. We tested if this mutant hemolymph is useful as a medium supplement for insect cell culture. Cell growth rate and final cell concentration in the medium supplemented with the wEb hemolymph were almost same as those in the medium supplemented with the wild-type hemolymph. Hemolymph is collected on a small scale by clipping the abdominal leg; however, this method is not appropriate fro large scale preparation. Centrifugation after chopping the silkworm hemolymph by a blending mixer is a more appropriate procedure for large scale collection. Slowly oxidized wEb hemolymph resulted in higher cell concentration than the wild-type hemolymph when hemolymph was collected by the large scale preparation method.

  • Photocatalyzed degradation of trace level trichloroethylene(TCE) and toluene in air was carried out over near UV illuminated titanium doxide(anatase) pellet in a flow reactor. The authors investigaed the effects of humidity and trace contaminant levels on the oxidation rates of toluene. Inlet concentrations of TCE and toluene were 10∼100ppm. TCE photooxidation was very rapid under what conditions, and almost 100% conversion was achieved for TCE(up to 70 ppm) as a single air contaminant. An important finding was that competitive adsorption between humidity and trace contaminants has a significant effect on the oxidation rate of what.

  • The electrodeposition of indium onto a copper electrode from an aqueous sulfate solution containing $In^{3+}$ was studied by means of cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. Reduction and oxidation of indium on copper were investigated by using cyclic voltammograms at different negative limiting potentials and at different scan rates in cumulative cycles. Cyclic voltammograms indicated that reduction and oxidation processes of indium could involve various reactions. Chronoamperometry was carried out to analyze the nucleation mechanism of indium in the early stage of indium electrodeposition. The non-dimensional plot of the current transients at different potentials showed that the shape of the plot depended on the applied potential. The nucleation of indium at potential step of -0.6~-0.8 V was close to progressive nucleation limited by diffusion. However the non-dimensional plot of current transients for the indium nucleation showed different behaviors from theoretical curves at the potential step lower than -0.8 V.

  • In the present study, the oxidative stability of Korean evening primrose oil (EPO) stored in various conditions, i.e., dark, cool, fluorescent light and daylight irradiation were investigated. Furthermore difference between the compositional content of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) of EPO and that of alpha-linolenic acid of soybean oil (SOY) undergoing various modes of oxidation was observed. The results of the present study were as follows: More rapid autoxidative reations of EPO than that of SOY in vairous conditions increased in order of daylight, fluorescent light, cool and dark. Espectially, autoxidative rates of EPO increased rapidly on exposure to daylight and fluorescent light. This probably was due to chlorophyll functioned as a photosensitizer resulting in rapid oxidation of the EPO during irrdadiation of light. However, there was no difference between compositional content of GLA in EPO and alpha-linolenic acid in SOY undergoing various modes of oxidation. Therefore, theripid oxidative rate of EPO could be due to the catalytic effect of the chlorophyll on the photoxidation and the free radical reaction of PUFA.

  • The low-temperature Si oxidation kinetics by inductively coupled oxygen plasma has been studied. Linear rate constants had negative values when the oxide growth rate was described by linear-parabolic growth law. The analysis of transverse-optical mode frequencies and etch rates indicated that the density of surface oxide was lower than that of bulk oxide. The oxidation kinetics could be explained qualitatively by assuming a surface layer with larger diffusion coefficient and a bulk layer with smaller diffusion coefficient.

  • The initiation and growth of $\alpha$-Al2O3/metal composites by the directed oxidation of molten commercial AlZnMg-alloy at 1223-1423K were investigated. Spontaneous bulk growth did not occur on the alloy alone. but the uniform initiation and growth of the composite were obtained by putting a thin layer of SiO2 particles on the surface of the alloy. Without SiO2 the external surface of the oxide layer was convered by MgO and MgAl2O4. But with the SiO2 reaction initiate the porous ZnO layers were found on the growth surface. The higher process temperature yielded a lower metal content. The oxidation product of $\alpha$-Al2O3 was found to be oriented with c-axis parallel to th growth direction. The growth rates increased with temperature and the apparent activation energy was 111.8 kJ/mol.

  • The oxidation of carbon monoxide has been investigated on Ni-doped ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ catalyst at 300 to $450^{\circ}$. The oxidation rates have been correlated with 1.5-order kinetics; first with respect to CO and 1/2 with respect to $O_2$. Carbon monoxide is adsorbed on lattice oxygen of Ni-doped ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$, while oxygen appears to be adsorbed on oxygen vacancy formed by Ni-doping. The conductivities show that adsorption of CO on O-lattice produces conduction electron and adsorption of $O_2$ on O-vacancy withdraws the conduction electron from vacancy. The adsorption process of CO on O-lattice is rate-determining step and dominant defect of Ni-doped ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ is suggested from the agreement between kinetic and conductivity data.

  • The catalytic activities of palladium(0,Ⅰ,Ⅱ)-diphosphine complexes were investigated in styrene oxidation using H2O2 as terminal oxidant. The rates showed a dependence on the chelate ring patterns of complexes (PdCl2L); 5-membered ring (L=dppe: 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane) < 6-membered ring (L=dppp: 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane) < 4-membered ring (L= dppm: bis(diphenylphosphino)methane). This sequence correlates with the ligand field strength and interactions between metal and phosphine ligands. Pd(Ⅱ,Ⅰ)-diphosphine complexes which are capable of making 4-membered chelate ring showed an enhancement of catalytic activities for styrene oxidation. The catalytic activities of Pd(0,Ⅰ,Ⅱ)-diphosphine complexes are described in terms of electronic and steric factors.
