  • Objectives: To summarize and make a reference number of herbal plant-derived antioxidant researches worldwide. Methods: We surveyed all papers of antioxidant-focused studies using plants in PubMed database as "herbal plant AND antioxidant" of Default Tag "Title". The type of materials used in the studies, formation of experiments, frequency of herbal plants studied and their actions, and main study subjects were analyzed. Results: The number of studies on herbal plant-related antioxidant effects have increased worldwide since 2000. Studies have been performed using mainly single plant and single compounds for medical disorders such as immunity, heart/blood, liver, and central nerve functions. The list of plants frequently includes SalviamiltiorrhizaBge.,GinkgobilobaL., ScutellabaicalensisGeorgi.,and so on. Most of these plants have strong effects against oxidative stress and also against free radicals and increase the activities of antioxidant enzymes. Conclusion: This study produced an overview of previous research on antioxidant-focused herbal plants. This result will provide useful information for the field of Korean traditional medicine for the development of drugs related to antioxidants.

  • Objectives To make comprehensive feature of clinical trials using herbal medicine and their results by today, then help a strategy for herbal medication-derived clinical studies in the future. Methods Through medical website (Pubmed EBSCO Medline), foreign clinical literatures about atopic dermatitis and herbal medicine were searched. And domestic clinical literatures about atopic dermatitis using internet website (OASIS) and hand-searching. Analysis was performed according to distribution mainly by subject, study design, number by year and its efficacy. Results and Conclusions Seventy-nine (Domestic literatures: Fifty, Foreign literatures: Twenty-nine) literatures were selected according to inclusion criteria of clinical study. 80% of domestic clinical literatures were observational studies, 50% of foreign were intervention. There were six adverse effect case studies, two follow-ups, one case report, four translational and four uncontrolled clinical trials in foreign literatures. And nineteen case reports, eighteen case series, two follow-up and five uncontrolled clinical studies in domestic. Six RCTs have established by four external herb therapy and two decoctions in Korea, showed positive effects. Three out of four external applications RCTs, four out of seven decoctions showed positive results in foreign studies. This study revealed the current status of atopic dermatitis clinical research using herbal drugs. To put clinical trials to use of herbal medicine in the treatment atopic dermatitis, scientific and objective-based studies should be needed.

  • The hub of weight bearing in the human body for both static and dynamic activities is the lumbopelvic region. It is a key region of extraordinary stability, since the trunk and ground forces converage in this region. The two sacroiliac joints form an integral part of this lumbopelvic unit. Considerable effort has been expended to study and quantify the normal range of movement of the sacroiliac joints Mitchell suggests that the ilium rotates in a posterior direction at heel strike and progresses in an anterior direction as the individual passes through the stance phase. The overall key appears to lie in determining the weight-bearing pattern of the sacroiliac (lumbopelvic) region from above and below that results in the familiar pain of sacroiliac dysfunction, assessing the status of the injured tissues, and intervening with the proper treatment protocols that maximize the body's healing processes. The purpose of this chapter is to provide a comprehensive overview of the sacroiliac joint's tissues and biomechanics, as well as concepts of evaluation and treatment. This overview is aimed at assisting the clinician in identifying the forces that are potentially destructive to the lumbopelvic tissues.

  • Hypersecretion of pulmonary mucus is a major pathophysiological feature in allergic and inflammatory respiratory diseases including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Overproduction and/or oversecretion of mucus cause the airway obstruction and the colonization of pathogenic microbes. Developing a novel pharmacological agent to regulate the production and/or secretion of pulmonary mucus can be a useful strategy for the effective management of pathologic hypersecretion of mucus observed in COPD and asthma. Thus, in the present review, we tried to give an overview of the conventional pharmacotherapy for mucus-hypersecretory diseases and recent research results on searching for the novel candidate agents for controlling of pulmonary mucus hypersecretion, aiming to shed light on the potential efficacious pharmacotherapy of mucus-hypersecretory diseases.

  • Pneumonia is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality, particularly in old adults. The incidence and etiologic distribution of community-acquired pneumonia is variable both geographically and temporally, and epidemiology might evolve with the change of population characteristics and vaccine uptake rates. With the increasing prevalence of chronic medical conditions, a wide spectrum of healthcare-associated pneumonia could also affect the epidemiology of community-acquired pneumonia. Here, we provide an overview of the epidemiological changes associated with community-acquired pneumonia over the decades since pneumococcal conjugate vaccine introduction.

  • Recently, diagnoses of and operations for medial orbital blowout fracture have increased because of the development of imaging technology. In this article, the authors review the literature, and overview the accumulated knowledge about the orbital anatomy, fracture mechanisms, surgical approaches, reconstruction materials, and surgical methods. In terms of surgical approaches, transcaruncular, transcutaneous, and transnasal endoscopic approaches are discussed. Reconstruction methods including onlay covering, inlay implantation, and repositioning methods are also discussed. Consideration and understanding of these should lead to more optimal outcomes.

  • Although lobectomy remains the gold-standard surgical treatment for non-small-cell lung cancer, the frequency of thoracoscopic segmentectomy is increasing. Multiple factors must be considered in the choice of the procedure, ranging from adequate surgical planning or simulation, tumor localization, and identification of the intersegmental plane to severing the intersegmental plane to achieve an oncologically safe surgical margin with no or minimal manual palpation and different landmarks. In this article, we present an overview of methods for each procedural step of thoracoscopic segmentectomy, from preoperative planning to division of the intersegmental plane.

  • Plasmodium vivax is more challenging to control and eliminate than P. falciparum due to its more asymptomatic infections with low parasite densities making diagnosis more difficult, in addition to its unique biological characteristics. The potential re-introduction of incidence cases, either through borders or via human migrations, is another major hurdle to sustained control and elimination. The Republic of Korea has experienced re-emergence of vivax malaria in 1993 but is one of the 32 malaria-eliminating countries to-date. Despite achieving successful nationwide control and elimination of vivax malaria, the evolutionary characteristics of vivax malaria isolates in the Republic of Korea have not been fully understood. In this review, we present an overview of the genetic variability of such isolates to increase understanding of the epidemiology, diversity, and dynamics of vivax populations in the Republic of Korea.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this review is to overview the research trend of herbal medicine for urticaria. Methods : We searched for studies of urticaria treated with herbal medicine published from 2010 until March 2022, through 5 web databases. After searching studies, we analyzed selected studies. Results : As a result, 7 studies have been found and analyzed. Three studies were randomized controlled trials, and four studies were before & after clinical research. All of research which selected have reported that herbal medicine treatment was effective for urticaria. Conclusion : According to the results, herbal medicine treatments can be effective treatment for urticaria. Further clinical studies are expected using evaluation methods to analyze the results and to establish high level of evidence.

  • The oocyte quality is of great importance in infertility as it reflects the follicle developmental potential and further affects the embryo development, clinical pregnancy outcomes. The analysis of gene expression in somatic cells is an important study to better clinical in vitro fertilization (IVF) outcomes in embryo selection reflecting the appropriate communication between the oocyte and somatic cells. Specifically, somatic cell transcriptomic technology can help assess biomarkers of oocyte and embryo ability. The present article aims to overview the basic aspect of folliculogenesis and review studies involving changes in candidate gene expression of cumulus or granulosa cell related to clinical outcomes in human IVF.
