The influences of coating on oak veneer overlaid Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) were evaluated. The hardness of 9mm-MDF by hardness test were increased about 28% with coating on MDF and the more increased hardness of 31% with oak veneer overlaid MDF. The hardness of veneer overlaid MDF increased with increment of the veneer thickness and that of overlaid MDF showed the higher hardness compared to non-overlaid MDF. The optimum moisture content in terms of the hardness of panels MDF was in the range of 7% to 10% and the hardness was decreased with increasing of the moisture content. Any cracks were not overlaid coated on the MDF but the cracks were observed on the overlaid MDF after Soak under Vacuum Dry 10-cycle. The thicker veneer-overlaid MDF showed more cracks.

The flexural and horizontal shear behavior of overlaid concrete slabs is investigated in the present study. An experimental program was set up and several series of overlaid concrete slabs have been tested to study the effect of different surface preparation ; and dowels between old slab and overlay under service load. The present study indicates that the overlaid concrete slabs behave integrally with existing bottom slabs up to yield range for rough and doweled joints.
We consider an overlaid broadcast service, where a spread spectrum (SS)-based broadcast signal is overlaid onto the existing terrestrial Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (T-DMB) band. The system is similar to the augmented data transmission in the ATSC DTV, for which it was investigated mostly in terms of link level performance, such as bit error rate. Our focus in this paper is on the system-level performances. More specifically, utilizing both a large scale path loss and a small scale fading channel model, the primary objective is to explore the tradeoff between the coverage and the achievable rate of the overlaid service and, finally, to determine the achievable rate in the overlaid service for marginal coverage reduction in the existing broadcast service. The analytical and simulation results show that an SS-based add-on service of 10 kbps to 20 kbps can co-exist with the T-DMB service while resulting in only a marginal degradation in T-DMB coverage (for example, less than one percent reduction).
The research is to insure the soundness of the stainless steel overlaid weld metal(21/4Cr-IMo steel + SUS 309L) for a pressure vessel application. Detail studies were conducted for the PWHT influence on the micrstructure and intergranular corrosion characteristics of the overlaid weld metal as well as initiation of hydrogen embrittlement crack(or Disbonding) when welded metal are exposed to the hydrogen atmosphere. Hydrogen was experimentally charged to the overlaid weld metal in order to study PWHT effect on the susceptibility of hydrogen embrittlement crack. The results of this research are as follows: 1. At the bond region, austenite grain of the stainless steel side became coarsed and Cr23C6 type carbide was precipitated at the coarsed austenitic grain boundaries. Intergranular Corrosion width(by Straiss test) increased with increasing PWHT temperature and PWHT time.
This study was carried out to manufacture very thin natural elm veneer overlaid charcoal board for enhancing aesthetic value of charcoal board for the indoor application, and to use the advantageous properties of the charcoal as a building material for solving the sick house problem. The thin elm veneer had 26.9% opening ratio. The experiment results showed that the spreading area and the nonvolatile content of adhesive did not affect the gas adsoprtion of fancy veneer overlaid charcoal board. The natural thin elm veneer overlaid charcoal board enhanced not only the aesthetic beauty but also showed the same gas adsorption by the charcoal board.

In this paper we propose the resource allocation scheme for the overlaid macro-femtocell networks, which considers the type of handovers such as the inter-macrocell, macrocell-to-femtocell, femtocell-to-macrocell, or inter-femtocell in order to guarantee Quality of Service (QoS) and expand the accommodation capacity. Our proposed scheme takes into account the movement of mobile terminals, the QoS degradation, or the load control which trigger handovers in the overlaid networks, before it allocates resources dynamically. Moreover it considers QoS requirements of realtime or non-realtime mobile multimedia services such as video communication, Video on Demand (VoD) and dataa services. Simulation results show that our scheme provides better performances than the conventional one with respect to the outage probability, data transmission throughput and handover failure rate.
Objective: This study examined two traffic signals with a countdown indicator in terms of driver's reaction time and subjective satisfaction score and their performance was compared with a standard traffic signal in driving simulation. Background: Dilemma zone is created when a traffic light changes at intersections. It often pushes drivers to rush in urgent and premature decision making whether to go or stop and thus induces unnecessary mental load among drivers, which may lead to sudden conflicts with following vehicles at intersections. Method: Forty college students (male: 20, female: 20) participated in this driving simulation study. Three traffic signals were employed: (1) standard traffic signal; (2) countdown-separated signal; and (3) countdown-overlaid signal. The countdown-separated and countdown-overlaid signals were designed to inform drivers of the remaining time of a green light before tuning to an amber light. Reaction times (sec) and satisfaction scores (7-point scale) for the two signals with a countdown indicator were compared with those for the standard traffic signal. Results: Reaction times of the countdown-separated (0.49 sec) and countdown-overlaid (0.43 sec) signals were significantly shorter than that of the standard signal (0.67 sec). Satisfaction scores of the countdown-separated (5.3 point) and countdown-overlaid (5.6 point) signals were greater than that of the standard signal (3.8 point). Lastly, the countdown-overlaid signal showed better performance than the countdown-separated signal, but their differences in reaction time (0.06 sec) and satisfaction score (0.3 point) were small. Conclusion: Traffic signals with a countdown indicator can improve drivers' reaction time and satisfaction score than the standard traffic signal. Application: Traffic signals with a countdown indicator will be useful for reducing the length of dilemma zone at intersections, by allowing drivers to predict the remaining time of a green light.
The failure phenomenon of overlaid concrete structures, such as surface crack, and peel-off failure, shear bond failure in the end contact zone, was investigated due to humidity changes. To investigate this failure phenomenon, the surface tensile stress, and the shear stress, the vertical tensile stress in the contact zone were analysed using the non-linear stress-strain relationship of material such as strain-hardening- and strain-softening diagrams. Overlay thickness and overlay material were the main variables in the analyses. It is assumed that the initial surface humidity of overlaid concrete structures was 100% r.H. With a atmospheric humidity of 55% r.H. and two load cases for drying(LCI), curing and drying(LC2), the stress states of overlaid concrete structures were calculated. The result shows that only fictitious cracks occurred in the overlay surface of CM2O, ECM25, and no shear bond failure occurred in the contact zone without CM2O. The peel-off failure was proved to be the main cause of the damage in the overlaid concrete structures. Only for overlay thickness of 1cm occurred no peel-off failure in the case of drying after a long-term public use(LC1). In the case of curing and drying during overlay work(LC2) occurred the peel-off failure within 1.5days for all the overlaid concrete structures.
Casting are widely used nodays as complicated and diversified forming materials due to its superior castability. However the welding of cast iron has not been accompaniced satisfactory resulting in an microstructure change happened in the heat affected zone (HAZ), especially the graphite are formed and shaped consecutively in the area and it has great impact on the crack occuring and growth together with martensite forming in this area. It case of gray cast iron welding, it is required for pre-heat treatment or specific welding consumables to restrain forming the martensite in the HAZ. In this study, by applying the plasma surface overlaid welding. Fe-Mn-Al steel powder has been used for improvement of anti-crackability in the HAZ and much attention has been paid to establish the overlaid welding method for gray cast iron so that optimum welding conditions may prevent the cracking. With our experiments, we have found that to prevent defects which may occur in the HAZ, the overlaid welding technique for gray cast iron has been developed.
The flexural and horizontal shear behavior of overlaid concrete slabs with polymer interface is investigated in the present study. An experimental program was set up and several series of overlaid concrete slabs have been tested to study the effect of different surface preparations and dowel bars between old slab and overlay under service and ultimate loads. 'The cracking and ulti mate load behavior for various cases including acryl emulsion treatment and doweled joints has been studied. The present study indica.tes that the overlaid concrete slabs behave integrally with existing bottom slabs up to ultimate range for rough and doweled joints with polymer interface. The pres ent study provides a firm base for the realistic design of two-layered RC slabs in bridges.
