Purpose: Periodontitis, the most prevalent chronic inflammatory condition affecting teeth-supporting tissues, is diagnosed and classified through clinical and radiographic examinations. The staging of periodontitis using panoramic radiographs provides information for designing computer-assisted diagnostic systems. Performing image segmentation in periodontitis is required for image processing in diagnostic applications. This study evaluated image segmentation for periodontitis staging based on deep learning approaches. Materials and Methods: Multi-Label U-Net and Mask R-CNN models were compared for image segmentation to detect periodontitis using 100 digital panoramic radiographs. Normal conditions and 4 stages of periodontitis were annotated on these panoramic radiographs. A total of 1100 original and augmented images were then randomly divided into a training (75%) dataset to produce segmentation models and a testing (25%) dataset to determine the evaluation metrics of the segmentation models. Results: The performance of the segmentation models against the radiographic diagnosis of periodontitis conducted by a dentist was described by evaluation metrics(i.e., dice coefficient and intersection-over-union [IoU] score). MultiLabel U-Net achieved a dice coefficient of 0.96 and an IoU score of 0.97. Meanwhile, Mask R-CNN attained a dice coefficient of 0.87 and an IoU score of 0.74. U-Net showed the characteristic of semantic segmentation, and Mask R-CNN performed instance segmentation with accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score values of 95%, 85.6%, 88.2%, and 86.6%, respectively. Conclusion: Multi-Label U-Net produced superior image segmentation to that of Mask R-CNN. The authors recommend integrating it with other techniques to develop hybrid models for automatic periodontitis detection.

This paper describes a color image segmentation algorithm based on region merging using hue difference as a restrictive condition. The proposed algorithm using mathematical morphology and a modified watershed algorithm does over-segmentation in the RGB space to preserve contour information of regions. Then, the segmentation result of color image is acquired by repeated region merging using hue differences as a restrictive condition. This stems from human visual system based on hue, saturation, and intensity. Hue difference between two regions is used as a restrictive condition for region merging because it becomes more important factor than color difference if intensity is not low. Simulation results show that the proposed color image segmentation algorithm provides efficient segmentation results with the predefined number of regions for various color images.
While recognition of isolated units of writing, such as a character or a word, has been extensively studied, emphasis on the segmentation itself has been lacking. In this paper we propose an active segmentation method for handwritten Hangul address strings based on the Run-length code. A slant correction algorithm, which is considered as an important preprocessing step for the segmentation, is presented. Three fundamental candidate estimation functions are introduced to detect the clues on touching points, and the classification of touching types is attempted depending on the structural peculiarity of Hangul. Our experiments show segmentation performance of 88.2% on touching characters with minimal over-segmentation.

Proper consumer segmentation is receiving more attention from industry professionals as markets become more diverse and consumer-centered. Researchers have recognized the limitations of the traditional cluster analysis technique and this research study analyzes market segmentation using Mixture-model or latent-class segmentation. This study used a questionnaire to determine the characteristics of clothing shoppers using a new technique that proved its superiority over traditional techniques. Questions included items measuring fashion shopping behavior, store choice criteria, apparel consumption styles, price perception by product type, and demographic characteristics. Data were collected from 1074 males and females in their 20s and 30s through an online survey. SPSS 16.0 and Latent GOLD 4.0 were used to analyze the data. The ideal typology of clothing shoppers using the Mixture-model were: 'brand loyalty orientated group', 'group of conservative late 30s', 'group of pleasure-emotion early 20s', 'value oriented consumer product with high-income group', 'group of eco/symbol oriented consumer', and 'group of utility/goal oriented male consumer'. This study showed differences in fashion product purchasing behavior by conducting market segmentation for clothing shoppers using the Mixture-model.

This paper presents a semantic object extraction method using user's stroke input, color, and depth information. It is supposed that a semantically meaningful object is surrounded with a few strokes from a user, and has similar depths all over the object. In the proposed method, deciding the region of interest (ROI) is based on the stroke input, and the semantically meaningful object is extracted by using color and depth information. Specifically, the proposed method consists of two steps. The first step is over-segmentation inside the ROI using color and depth information. The second step is semantically meaningful object extraction where over-segmented regions are classified into the object region and the background region according to the depth of each region. In the over-segmentation step, we propose a new marker extraction method where there are two propositions, i.e. an adaptive thresholding scheme to maximize the number of the segmented regions and an adaptive weighting scheme for color and depth components in computation of the morphological gradients that is required in the marker extraction. In the semantically meaningful object extraction, we classify over-segmented regions into the object region and the background region in order of the boundary regions to the inner regions, the average depth of each region being compared to the average depth of all regions classified into the object region. In experimental results, we demonstrate that the proposed method yields reasonable object extraction results.

The advances in image display devices necessitate display images suitable for the user's purpose. The display devices should be able to provide object-based image information when a depthmap is required. In this paper, we represent the algorithm using a histogram-based image segmentation method for depthmap generation. In the conventional K-means clustering algorithm, the number of centroids is parameterized, so existing K-means algorithms cannot adaptively determine the number of clusters. Further, the problem of K-means algorithm tends to sink into the local minima, which causes over-segmentation. On the other hand, the proposed algorithm is adaptively able to select centroids and can stand on the basis of the histogram-based algorithm considering the amount of computational complexity. It is designed to show object-based results by preventing the existing algorithm from falling into the local minimum point. Finally, we remove the over-segmentation components through connected-component labeling algorithm. The results of proposed algorithm show object-based results and better segmentation results of 0.017 and 0.051, compared to the benchmark method in terms of Probabilistic Rand Index(PRI) and Segmentation Covering(SC), respectively.
Biologist must have to do 2DGE biological experiment for Protein Search and Analysis. This experiment coming into being 2 dimensional image. 2DGE (2D Gel Electrophoresis : two dimensional gel electrophoresis) image is the most widely used method for isolating of the objective protein by comparative analysis of the protein spot pattern in the gel plane. The process of protein spot analysis, firstly segment protein spots that are spread in 2D gel plane by image processing and can find important protein spots through comparative analysis with protein pattern of contrast group. In the algorithm which detect protein spots, previous 2DGE image analysis is applies gaussian fitting, however recently Watersheds region based segmentation algorithm, which is based on morphological segmentation is applied. Watersheds has the benefit that segment rapidly needed field in big sized image, however has under-segmentation and over-segmentation of spot area when gray level is continuous. The drawback was somewhat solved by marker point institution, but needs the split and merge process. This paper introduces a novel marker search of protein spots by watersheds-based hierarchical threshold, which can resolve the problem of marker-driven watersheds.
A connected component analysis from a binary image is a popular character segmentation method but occasionally fails to segment the characters owing to image noise and uneven illumination. A multimethod binarization scheme that incorporates two or more binary images is a novel solution, but selection of binarization methods has never been analyzed before. This paper reveals the best combination of binarization methods and parameters and presents an in-depth analysis of the multimethod binarization scheme for better character segmentation. We carry out an extensive quantitative evaluation, which shows a significant improvement over conventional single-method binarization methods. Experiment results of six binarization methods and their combinations with different test images are presented.
A fast method of Hangul address word verification is presented in this Paper. Pre-segmentation and recognition by DP matching is adopted in this paper. An address line image is over-segmented by analyzing the topology of connected components and the projection profile. A fast individual Hangul character verifier was developed by applying SVM (Support Vector Machine). The segmentation hypothesis was represented by lattice structure, and a best path search by dynamic programming generates the most probable segmentation path and the final verification score. The word verifier was tested on 310 address image DB, and it show the possibility of improvements of this method.

We propose a background subtraction method for moving cameras based on trajectory classification, image segmentation and label inference. In the trajectory classification process, PCA-based outlier detection strategy is used to remove the outliers in the foreground trajectories. Combining optical flow trajectory with watershed algorithm, we propose a trajectory-controlled watershed segmentation algorithm which effectively improves the edge-preserving performance and prevents the over-smooth problem. Finally, label inference based on Markov Random field is conducted for labeling the unlabeled pixels. Experimental results on the motionseg database demonstrate the promising performance of the proposed approach compared with other competing methods.
