  • A case of paraganglioma of the retroperitoneum diagnosed by fine needle aspiration cytology is described. A 60-year-old man presented with abdominal discomfort for 4 months. The smear revealed cellular sheets with partly rosettoid appearance. Many piexiform capillaries were distributed between the cellular sheets or encircled the cellular nests forming zell-ballen pattern. The tumor cells were monotonous and oval to round. The cytoplasm was amphophillc, finely granular and poorly defined. The nuclei were round and had evenly dispersed chromatin and small nucleoli. Cells having large or spindle nuclei were some-times observed. The tissue sections showed typical findings of paragnglima. The cytological differential diagnoses included islet cell tumor of the pancreas and carcinold tumor. The clinical and histoloigic findings as well as cytologic findings were helpful to confirm the diagnosis.

  • Extrathoracic metastases of thymomas are extremely rare, occurring in less than 2% of cases. We present a case of metastatic thymoma in the liver diagnosed by aspiration biopsy. A fine-needle aspirate from a hepatic mass of a 65-year old man who had a history of malignant thymoma locally invading pericardium was examined. Nests of epithelial cells with few scattered lymphocytes were present. The nuclei of the epithelial cells were round to oval and appeared relatively uniform and regular, with fine chromatin pattern. They had one or two, small but lather conspicuous nucleoli. Unlike previous reports on the findings of the aspiration cytology of thymomas, the characteristic biphasic pattern was not present in this case.

  • Ganglioneuromas are a fully differentiated tumor that contains no immature elements. The majority of sanglioneuromas are diagnosed in patients older than 10 years and are most often located in the posterior mediastinum, followed by the retroperitoneum. The location of these tumors in the parapharyngeal region is extremely uncommon and there are only a few reports on the cytologic appearance of the tumor. We report a case of ganglioneuroma presenting in a parapharyngeal location in a 4 year-old boy, diagnosed by fine needle aspiration cytology. The smears revealed scattered large oval to polygonal cells with voluminous, granular cytoplasms. The nuclei were one to two in number and had a prominent nucleolus. Clusters of benign spindle-shaped cells were also present.

  • A 33-year-old woman who was diagnosed as medullary carcinoma by fine needle aspiration of thyroid mass is presented. The smear revealed dispersed pattern and small clusters of cells without follicular or papillary structures. The nuclei were round, oval or spindle shaped and eccentrically located. The cytoplasm was abundant and showed red-stained cytoplasmic granulation and tail-like projection with indistinct border. Clumps of amorphous, light-green material were intermingled with tumor cells.

  • Chondroblastoma is a benign bone tumor accounting for less than 1 % of bone tumor. It infrequently involves the flat bones, among which ribs are particularly rare. On fine needle aspiration cytology, the diagnostic smear consists of chondroblasts, osteoclast-like giant cells, and chondroid matrix. The cytologic hallmark to differentiate from other giant cell-containing lesions is chondroblasts. We experienced a case of chondroblastoma in a 13-year-old female. Fine needle aspiration cytology from the 5 th rib revealed dispersed chondroblasts and osteoclast-like giant cells on hemorrhagic background. Chondroblasts had round to oval nuclei with fine, evenly distributed chromatin and distinctive grooves or indentation. Their cytoplasm was well-defined.

  • The authors have observed a case o hemangioendothelioma occurred on the left palate and buccal mucosa of a 40 year old woman. The results are as follows. 1) A blue-red round mass, 1.0cm in diameter, appeared on the palate and a blueviolet oval mass, 1.2cm in diamcter, on he buccal mucosa, and both of them showed a tendency to bleed after even slight trauma. 2) Microscopically the lesion was composed predominantly of masses of endothelial cells proliferating in and about the undifferentiated vascular channels. 3) well-vascularized tissue was made up of vascular spaces, showing infilitration of small round cells.

  • We localized a calcium-binding protein, calretinin, in the superior colliculus of the mouse and studied the distribution and effect of eye enucleation on the distribution of this protein. Calretinin was localized with immunocyto-chemistry. A dense plexus of anti-calretinin-labeled fibers was found within the superficial layers. The highest density was found in the deep superficial gray layer. Monocular enucleation produced an almost complete reduction of calretinin-immunoreactive fibers in the superficial layers of the superior colliculus contralateral to the enucleation. Furthermore, many calretinin-labeled cells appeared in the contralateral superior colliculus. These newly appeared neurons had small oval or round cell bodies. The results demonstrate that calretinin identify unique neuronal sublaminar organizations in the superior colliculus of the mouse. They also suggest that the retinal projection may control in part the content of calretinin in some neurons in the superficial layers of the mouse superior colliculus.

  • A case of spindle cell tumor was presented in a 16-month-old, female syrian hamster. In the left chest area, a 3cm firm elevated recurrent mass was found, surgically removed, and submitted to the Department of Veterinary Pathology, Seoul National University for diagnosis. The mass was soft to firm and tan on sectioning, and contained hemorrhagic area. Histologically, the tumor was composed of sheets of interlacing bundles of spindle-shaped cells with moderate amount of cytoplasm and oval to fusiform nuclei. They were plemorphic and contained 1 to 3 prominent nucleoli. Based on the gross and histological findings, the tumor was diagnosed as a subcutaneous spindle cell tumor. However, the exact origin of neoplastic cells remained undetermined.

  • A six-year-old male captive nutria (Myocastor coypus) maintained in a closed space with a small vent was found dead in his cage. Gross findings showed multifocal nodules in varying sizes, small 0.5 to large 5 cm in diameter, intermixed with normal parenchyma were scattered all over the surface of the lungs and a kidney, which the cut surface was smooth, compact and whitish in color. Microscopically, small round to oval neoplastic cells with modest to slight amounts of cytoplasm formed acinar and gland-like structures. Immunohistochemically, cells were strongly positive for E-cadherin and slightly reactive for thyroid transcription factor-1 (TTF-1). Based on those diagnostic features, the neoplasia was diagnosed as primary pulmonary adenocarcinoma (small cell type) and metastasized into the kidney. This is the first case report of malignant pulmonary tumor and its metastasis in the nutria.

  • The oval shaped pericardial cells are clustered along the lateral sides of the heart and irregularly connected with the heart. The cells are bounded by a basement membrane. The basement membranes of the connected two peicardial cells are irregularly linked each other there-fore funnels are formed. The multiple invaginations of the cell membrane are observed and septate junctions develope at the part of enterance of the cell membrane. The coated pits are appeared in the inner side of the invaginated cell membrane. The coated vesicles, tubular and spherical shaped vesicle, Golgi complex containing high electron densed material in the cisternae and mitochondria are observed in the cytoplasm and lysosomes are remarkably well developed. The whirled membrane structures in the multiformed complex bounded by single membrane are linked with low electron densed granules and spherical shaped small granules having high electron density with $0.03{\mu}m$ in diameter are located between the whirled membrane in a row and gradually secretes the granules and then they produced the multilamellar body. The lysosomal regions of cytoplasm of pericardial cell are appeared negative reaction to the acid phosphatase and according to the results of the electrophoresis, lipoproteins having acid phosphatase activity are contained. The axon is contacted with the pericardial cells.
