  • Indoor air quality in public transportation such as railway, subway and bus is hard to control because of spatial restrict and variation of passenger's number. On January 2007, The Ministry of Environment announced "the guideline of indoor air quality in public transportation" for the concentration managements of particulate matter and carbon dioxide. In this study, we measured the PM10 concentration inside the Mugunghwa-ho passenger cabin and outdoor air and counted passengers. By the statistical analysis using SigmaPlot 2001 and SPSS 13.0, we found that indoor PM10 concentration is significantly affected by outdoor air. It is suggested that the air quality of inflow to the passenger cabin for air exchange must be controlled to support the indoor environment comfortably.

  • This outline survey of indoor and outdoor radon concentrations in five major cities in Korea was carried out with Electrostatic Integrating Radon Monitor(EIRM) from February to December, 1996 and January to december, 1998. The mean indoor and outdoor radon concentrations in five major cities in 1996 were $21.9{\;}Bq/\textrm{m}^3$ and $9.6{\;}Bq/\textrm{m}^3$, respectively. The mean indoor and outdoor radon concentrations in 1998 were $20.8{\;}Bq/\textrm{m}^3$ and $9.0{\;}Bq/\textrm{m}^3$, respectively. These were below the U.S.EPA radon action level. The range of indoor to outdoor radon concentrations were $0.8{\;}Bq/\textrm{m}^3{\;}~{\;}45.6{\;}Bq/\textrm{m}^3$ in 1996, $0.5{\;}Bq/\textrm{m}^3{\;}~{\;}15.2{\;}Bq/\textrm{m}^3$ in 1998, respectively. The result of our analysis showed that radon concentrations in indoor air were clearly higher than those in outdoor air. Inspection of seasonal distribute pattern indicates the enhancement during winter relative to summer.

  • To estimate the cooling load for the following day, outdoor temperature and humidity are needed in hourly base. But the meteorological administration forecasts only maximum and minimum temperature. New methodology is proposed for predicting hourly outdoor temperature and humidity by using the forecasted maximum and minimum temperature. The correlations for normalized outdoor temperature and specific humidity has been derived from the weather data for five years at Seoul, Daejeon and Pusan. The correlations for normalized temperature are independent of date, while the correlations for specific humidity are linearly dependent on date. The predicted results show fairly good agreement with the measured data. The prediction program is also developed for hourly outdoor dry bulb temperature, specific humidity, dew point, relative humidity, enthalpy and specific volume.

  • This research is based on self-filling survey which 656 dental hygienists who work in, seoul, the metropolitan area, jeon-buk area participated on July 2006 through August 2006. This survey was analyzed the relationship between the subjective symptoms(6 types) and outdoor air quality($O_3,\;NO_2,\;CO,\;SO_2,\;PM_{10}$) As follows analyzed results. The health condition of dental hygienists were "Feel Good" more than 50% in last month. The experience the symptoms level is higher then non-experience level in "Dry eye, itch, smarting", "Headaches", "Fatigue and sleepiness", "Red eye", "Hypersensitivity", "Dorsalgia, omarthralgia, cervicodynia". We anticipated that the more experience the subjective symptom the more likely it is that outdoor air quality will be high rate level. But we could not find the uniformity in metropolitan-area and seoul-area. In the case of jeonbuk area, the group's pollution density levels which experienced the subjective symptom were appeared high rate than inexperienced group except $SO_2$. It probably comes from sensibility for an air pollution in this area. Dental hygienists who work in jeonbuk area have an unusual sensibility for an air pollution because outdoor air quality of jeonbuk area was rule good rather than others area. especially $SO_2$ was revealed out even though low rate level in inexperienced group it is that the number of cars in jeonbuk area is increasing rapidly.

  • The rapid development in modern industrialization pollutant the water and atmospheric air across the globe that have a major impact on the human and livings health. In worldwide, every country government increasing the importance to improve the outdoor air pollution monitoring and control to provide quality of life and prevent the citizens and livings life from hazard disease. We proposed the environmental dust level detection method for outdoor facilities using sensor fusion technology to measure precise micro-dust level and monitor in realtime. In this proposed approach use the camera sensor and commercial dust level sensor data to predict the micro-dust level with data fusion method. The camera sensor based dust level detection uses the optical flow based machine learning method to detect the dust level and then fused with commercial dust level sensor data to predict the precise micro-dust level of the outdoor facilities and send the dust level informations to the outdoor air pollution monitoring system. The proposed method implemented on raspberry pi based open-source hardware with Internet-of-Things (IoT) framework and evaluated the performance of the system in realtime. The experimental results confirm that the proposed micro-dust level detection is precise and reliable in sensing the air dust and pollution, which helps to indicate the change in the air pollution more precisely than the commercial sensor based method in some extent.

  • Despite the wide distribution of air pollutants, the concentrations of indoor air pollutants may be the dominant risk factor in personal exposure due to the fact that most people spend an average of 80% of their time in enclosed buildings. Researches for improvement of indoor air quality have been developed such as installation of air cleaning device, ventilation system, titanium dioxide$(TiO_2)$ coating and so on. However, it is difficult to evaluate the magnitude of improvement of indoor air quality in field study because indoor air quality can be affected by source generation, outdoor air level, ventilation, decay by reaction, temperature, humidity, mixing condition and so on. In this study, evaluation of reduction of formaldehyde and nitrogen dioxide emission rate in indoor environments by $TiO_2$ coating material was carried out using mass balance model in indoor environment. we proposed the evaluation method of magnitude of improvement in indoor air quality, considering outdoor level and ventilation. Since simple indoor concentration measurements could not properly evaluate the indoor air quality, outdoor level and ventilation should be considered when evaluate the indoor net quality.

  • Exposure assessment methodology for outdoor air inhalation pathways (i.e., inhalation of volatile compounds and fugitive dust in outdoor air) was investigated. Default values of several parameters currently used in Korea (e.g., Q/C; inverse value of concentration per unit flux, and frs; soil fraction in PM10) may not be suitable and lack site-specificity, as they have been adopted from the risk assessment guidance of the United States or the Netherlands. Such limitation can be addressed to a certain degree by incorporating the volatilization factor (VF) and the particulate emission factor (PEF) with Box model. This approach was applied to an exposure assessment of a site contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons in Korea. The result indicated that the suggested methodology led to more accurate site-specific exposure assessment for outdoor inhalation pathways. Further work to establish methodology to determine site-specific Q/C values in Korea needs to be done to secure the reliability of the exposure assessment for outdoor air inhalation pathways.
