  • 3D printing has been expanding beyond the bio/nano field to the automobile and aviation industries. 3D-printing technology has to overcome real problems to have economic value compared to its unlimited usability. Typically, the difference in mechanical strength along the lamination direction requires sufficient research to ensure reliability. In this paper, we study the anisotropic properties of ABS based on the stacking method of FDM 3D printing. Specifically, the mechanical properties of ABS material are determined through a tensile test and 3-point bending test, and the in-plane orthotropic properties are ascertained.

  • The cell modeling homogenization method to derive the constitutive equation considering the microstructures of the fiber reinforced composites has been previously developed for composites with simple microstructures such as 2D plane composites and 3D rectangular shaped composites. Here, the method has been further extended for 3D circular braided com-posites, utilizing B-spline curves to properly describe the more complex geometry of 3D braided composites. For verification purposes, the method has been applied for orthotropic elastic properties of the 3D circular braided glass fiber reinforced com-posite, in particular for the tensile property. Prepregs of the specimen have been fabricated using the 3D braiding machine through RTM (resin transfer molding) with epoxy as a matrix. Experimentally measured uniaxial tensile properties agreed well with predicted values obtained for two volume fractions.

  • In order to optimize the design of unidirectional fiber reinforced composite C-rings, a viscoelastic load relaxation behavior was analyzed under a point load. Initially, the deflection and bending stiffness were calculated based on the elastic beam theory and the viscoelastic relaxation and creep behaviors were derived from the elastic solution using the correspondence theorem. Besides the orthotropic mechanical properties of the composite, asymmetric mechanical property due to the different tensile and compressive properties were also considered. Except the deviation affected by the relatively large thickness of the specimen compared to the radius, the calculated relaxation showed good agreement with the experimental result.

  • As the rate of increase in areal density of the HDD has accelerated, dynamic characteristics of the HDD actuator need to be improved with respect to the performance of the tracking servo and shock transmission. Therefore, it is important to analyze the vibration characteristic of the HDD actuator that consists of the VCM part, E-block and pivot bearing. In this paper, vibration modes of the HDD actuator are investigated the using finite element and experimental modal analyses methods. To develop a detailed finite element model, finite element models of each components of the actuator assembly are constructed and tuned to the results of the EMA. The VCM coil is modeled as an equivalent finite element model that has an orthotropic material property using auto-model updating program. Auto-model updating program with improved sensitivity based iterative method is applied to build a detailed finite element model using the result of the EMA. A detailed finite element model of the HDD actuator is then constructed and analyzed.

  • Like composite material. the coil winding pack of the KSTAR (Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research) consist of multiphase element such as metallic jacket material for protecting superconducting cable, vacuum pressurized imprepregnated (VPI) insulation, and corner roving filler. For jacket material, four CS (Central Solenoid) Coils, $5^{th}$ PF (Poloidal Field) Coil, and TF (Toroidal Field Coil) use Incoloy 908 and $6-7^{th}$ PF coil, Cold worked 316LN. In order to analyze the global behavior of large coil support structure with coil winding pack, it is required to replace the winding pack to monolithic matter with the equivalent mechanical properties, i.e. Young's moduli, shear moduli due to constraint of total nodes number and element numbers. In this study, Equivalent Young's moduli, shear moduli, Poisson's ratio, and thermal expansion coefficient were calculated for all coil winding pack using Finite Element Method.

  • A prototype of 500Wh class flywheel energy storage device was designed and manufactured to check the previously predicted system performance. The system was intentionally designed to show rigid body behavior up to the maximum operating speed of 60000Tpm and to have its 2nd rigid critical mode, of which nodal point lies on the flywheel center of mass, around 4000 to 6000rpm with radial magnetic bearing stiffness of l.e+6 N/m. Numerous experiments an the system behavior showed that the PM axial bearing, designed utilizing a commercial code, acts as resonably as predicted and, most importantly, the system becomes stable after the 2nd critical speed. The EM radial bearing, however, was found out to have orthotropic property with much less radial stiffness values than expected, so that it was observed that the 2nd forward and backward critical modes were excited at 310 and 590rpm respectively with larger vibration amplitudes. Thus, in order to improve the system dynamic behavior, the EM radial bearing is currently being re designed so as to get bigger stiffness and, in turn, smoother operation of the system.

  • This study proposed a simplified finite element analysis procedure for designing the nonstructural masonry wall in the out-of-plane direction. The proposed method is a two-step elastic analysis procedure by bilinearizing the behavior of the masonry wall. The first step analysis was conducted with initial stiffness representing the behavior up to the effective-yield point, and the second step analysis was conducted with post-yield stiffness. In addition, the orthotropic material property of the masonry was considered in the FE analysis. The maximum load was estimated as the sum of the maximum loads in the first and second step analyses. The maximum load was converted into the moment coefficients and compared with those from the yield line method applied in Eurocode 6. The moment coefficients calculated through the proposed procedure showed a good match with those from the yield line method with less than 6% differences.

  • The free vibration problem of symmetrically laminated composite rectangular plates is formulated based on anisotropic thick plate theory including the effects of shear deformation and rotary inertia. Considering the difficulty of obtaining closed-form solutions, Rayleigh-Ritz analysis using polynomials having the property of Timoshenko beam functions as trial functions is adopted. The boundary conditions elastically restrained against rotation are accomodated as well as classical boundary conditions. From the results of numerical studies, the validity of the present method is verified. And it is also found that the adoption of thick plate theory for the vibration analysis of laminated composite plates is essential because of the relatively large shear deformation effect, and that the convergence of the Rayleigh quotient to the stationary value is less rapid in anisotropic composite plates than that in the orthotropic ones due to more complicated mode shapes of the former.
