  • The interference between closely placed co-coverage satellites was analyzed. In general, a satellite network may use different orthogonal polarizations and frequencies to increase the throughput of a satellite. However, when orthogonal linear polarization (horizontal polarization and vertical polarization) or orthogonal circular polarization (left-handed circular polarization and right-handed circular polarization) is used, the signal from one polarization sense to another may be coupled, resulting in cross-polarization interference. This signal-coupling arises due to the finite value of the cross-polarization discrimination of the earth station. In this study, field equations were used to analyze the interference between adjacent satellites using co-frequency. The level of interference was compared to that when two adjacent satellites used the same polarization. The simulation results show that the interference mainly depends on the off-axis co-polar pattern and the cross-polar pattern of the earth station antenna.

  • This paper proposes a new polarization diversity scheme for OPFDM (Orthogonal Polarization and Frequency Division Multiplexing). OPFDM is an extension of OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) in conjunction with polarization multiplexing in order to ensure the orthogonality amongst subcarriers. Since OPFDM uses two orthogonally polarized channels, it can easily employ the polarization diversity. In order to get the diversity gain effectively in a frequency selective fading channel, the proposed scheme combines the signals in subcarrier-by-subcarrier basis. The computer simulation results confirm that the proposed scheme is superior to conventional one in the two orthogonally polarized two-ray Rayleigh fading channels with cross-talk between the two channels.

  • In this paper, we propose an optical encryption system based on the encryption of information using the phase component of a wavefront and orthogonal polarization in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. Since the incoherence of the two perpendicularly polarized lights removes interference component, the decrypted image is stable. In encryption process, the original image is converted into an image having random polarization state by the relative phase difference of horizontal polarization and vertical polarization, so we cannot obtain the original information from the random polarization distribution. To decrypt an Image, the random polarization distribution of encrypted image is divided into two orthogonal components, then key image must be placed on vertical path of Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The decrypted image is obtained In the form of intensity by use of an analyzer.

  • This paper proposes a new design of a dual-band orthogonal-polarization microstrip antenna for V2N(Vehicle to Nomadic Device) communication system. The proposed antenna consists of a perpendicular feeding structure for utilizing orthogonal linear polarizations and an microstrip radiator which loaded by close-looped H-shape slot for obtaining dual-band operation. Due to the geometrically different loading effect of the close-looped H-shape slot for each feeding location, the orthogonally linear polarization at dual-band operation of the proposed antenna can be successfully achieved. The proposed antenna theoretically and experimentally demonstrates the vertical linear polarization at the operating frequency of 1.8 GHz and the horizontal linear polarization at the operating frequency of 2.4 GHz, respectively. The simulation and measurement results of the implemented antenna have been in good agreement with the reflection coefficients, radiation patterns, and realized antenna gains.

  • This study presents a dual-band polarization-reconfigurable antenna that comprises a large square patch with a pair of corner-cut edges and two small square patches with a shorting via. Two PIN diodes are located between the large square patch and two small square patches. Depending on the bias state applied to the two PIN diodes, each small patch may be disconnected or connected to the large square patch. As a result, the proposed antenna can provide polarization reconfigurability between two orthogonal linear polarizations. Further, the proposed antenna operates at 2.51 GHz and 2.71 GHz. From the measured results, the proposed antenna shows a 10 dB bandwidth of 2.39% (2.49-2.55 GHz) and 2.58% (2.68-2.75 GHz). In this work, the frequency ratio can be easily controlled by changing the size of the small patch.

  • This paper will suggest that the 1 cross orthogonal loop type sensor improves on the orthogonal loop form sensor-head, which is available a calibration of the linear birefringence, when a fiber optic current sensor was composed. An output characteristics of the 1 cross orthogonal loop form, a general closed loop form, the orthogonal loop form are compared by the IEC(International Electrotechnical Commission) 60044-8 standard, and the state of polarization is compared with three forms. As a result, when the closed loop form was changed to the orthogonal loop form, retardation decreased 15.3[%]. When the closed loop form was changed to the 1 cross orthogonal loop type, the retardation decreased 33.8[%]. As a result of the Faraday Effect measurement, the 1 cross orthogonal loop form has the highest output characteristic and the lowest error ratio. It met the 0.5 class of the IEC 60044-8 standard. Thus, in application of the 1cross orthogonal loop form, the possibility to develop high reliability fiber optic current sensors that have a high output and stable error ratio rises is increased.

  • In orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, phase noise introduced by the local oscillators can cause bit error rate (BER) performance degradation. To solve the phase noise problem, a novel orthogonal-polarization-based phase noise self-cancellation (OP-PNSC) scheme is proposed. First, the efficiency of canceling the phase noise of the OP-PNSC scheme in the AWGN channel is investigated. Then, the OP-PNSC scheme in the polarization-dependent loss (PDL) channel is investigated due to power imbalance caused by PDL, and a PDL pre-compensated OP-PNSC (PPC -OP-PNSC) scheme is proposed to mitigate the power imbalance caused by PDL. In addition, the performance of the PPC-OP-PNSC scheme is investigated, where the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and spectral efficiency (SE) performances are analyzed. Finally, a comparison between the OP-PNSC and polarization diversity scheme is discussed. The numerical results show that the BER and SINR performances of the OP-PNSC scheme outperform the case with the phase noise compensation and phase noise self-cancellation scheme.

  • Dual-polarization means to use two orthogonal polarizations, namely two independent channels in communication. This can be used to deal with high datarate caused by large amount of observed data in future LEO satellite. However, when two orthogonal polarizations are not perfectly independent to each other in practical, interference is probably raised in each channel, meaning that noise level in passband increases. XPD (Cross-Polarization Discrimination) is the ratio of the signal level at the output of a receiving antenna that is nominally co-polarized to the transmitting antenna to the output of a receiving antenna of the same gain but nominally orthogonal polarized to the transmitting antenna. In this paper, the influence of XPD on the communication between satellite and ground station was analyzed under the assumption that X-Band dual-polarization was applied to KOMPSAT-2 (KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite-2). Through analysis, it was shown that more than 3dB of link margin was still achievable despite of worst axial ratio, 2.5dB, at ground station antenna when axial ratio of satellite antenna was about 0.5dB under 99% of environmental availability.

  • Two planar inverted-F antenna (PIFA) arrays are proposed as an alternative model to generate input and radiation characteristics of two orthogonal oriented circular loops, which has polarization diversity, but inherent mechanical instability of two orthogonal loops, in particular, in installation and operation conditions. Two $1\times2$ PIFA sub-arrays are orthogonally placed on a ground plane and two different feeding networks are applied to control horizontal and vertical radiation current flows for each sub-array, respectively. Equivalence of scattering parameters and radiation patterns between two antennas are validated by the available commercial simulator.

  • This paper proposes a CP-OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing using Circular Polarization) system for improving the system performance. The circular polarization has a characteristic that it cannot receive the reflected waves which are reflected by odd times. By reducing the influences of the reflected waves, the circular polarization can reduce the time delay spread and the inter-channel interference. The guard interval needed for the OFDM frame can be minimized and the orthogonality between subchannels can be improved by using circular polarization. Therefore the proposed CP-OFDM system can improve the system performance as well as the spectrum efficiency. Both theoretical analysis and system simulation results are described.
