Comparative Clinical Study between Oriental Medicine and Oriental-Western Medicine Treatment on Bell's palsy (특발성 말초성 안면신경마비(Bell's Palsy)에 대한 한방치료와 양방병용치료의 비교 고찰)

  • Objective : Lately variable oriental-western medicine treatment have been used for Bell's palsy. The purpose of this study is comparison of clinical treatment outcome between oriental medicine group and oriental-western medicine group. Materials and Methods : From 08-01-2000 to 07-30-2001, 30 Bell's palsy out-patients who visited within 5days after onset and treated more than 3weeks at the Department of Acupuncture & Moxibustion, Bundang CHA Oriental Medicine Hospital were selected for two groups. One group(A group) was treated by oriental medicine therapy(Acupunture, Herb, Physical therapy), the other group(B group) was treated by oriental-western medicine therapy(Acupunture, Herb, Physical therapy, Administration of prednison). Two group was composed of 15 patients respectively and measured by HBGS(House-Brackmann Grading System) and DEFS(Detailed Evaluation of Facial Symmetry of Pillsbury and Fisch) at first visit and 3weeks after. Result and Conclusion : A group was marked more higher than B group in treatment outcome. But we discovered that it is not significant differences between two groups.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to show a case of patient with dysfunction of autonomic nervous system improved by oriental medical treatment. Methods: This patient was 66 year-old woman who complained pantalgia including abdominal pain and headache, cold sweating, anxiety, palpitation and fatigue. She was treated by herbal medicine(加味溫膽湯 $ji\bar{a}w\grave{e}iw\bar{e}nd\breve{a}nt\bar{a}ng$), acupuncture, moxa and aroma therapy. We used VAS(Visual analogue scale) to measure the progress of symptoms. Results : The symptoms of dysfunction of autonomic nervous system was improved after oriental medical therapy. Conclusions : This study suggests that oriental medicine therapy is effective in the trearment of dysfunction of autonomic nervous system.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical application of oriental medical therapy(OMT) and psychotherapy to a somatoform disorder patient with chronic pelycalgia and hemiparesis. Methods: We treated the patient with psychotherapy such as relaxation therapy and suggestion. OMT that we used is represented by retention enema therapy. The recovery of the pelycalgia was evaluated by Visual Analogue Scale(VAS). Results: Following the treatment the patient's pelycalgia and hemiparesis was improved. The sum of VAS score was rapidly decreased(from 113 to 28). Conclusion: OMT and psychotherapy have positive effects on the patient with chronic pelycalgia and hemiparesis.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of needle-embedding therapy against facial wrinkle. Methods : Ten patients with facial wrinkles were treated with needle-embedding therapy. Pictures and satisfaction questionnaire were compared before and after the treatment. And all patients were examined for adverse side effect after needle-embedding therapy. Results : After treatment, facial wrinkles were visibly improved after needle-embedding therapy. There were no adverse side effect except bruise. Conclusions : This study suggests that needle-embedding therapy can improve facial wrinkles.

  • Objective : The purpose of this case is to show a case of buerger's disease improved by leech therapy. Methods : The patient received Leech Therapy and Oriental medical therapy(acupuncture and herb medicine). Result : We evaluate through visual analog scale(VAS), neuropathic total symptom score(TSS), fontaine grade and picture of patient's foot. Conclusion : Leech therapy and Oriental medical therapy had a good effect on buerger's disease.

  • Objective : Stroke is the most frequent cause of death in Korea. Because it remains severe disablities disturbing normal life, it is important to carry out intervention preventing from progression of condition in patients with acute ischemic stroke within therapeutic time window. Thus early western intervention is necessary and beneficial for patients with acute stroke. However its therapeutic efficacy is not known in combination with Sasang Constitutional medical therapy. In this study, we investigated the clinical effect of East(Sasang Constitutional Medicine)-West integrated therapy. Methods : Among 54 patients with acute onset of stroke no later than seven days, 34 patients received East(Sasang Constitutional Medicine)-West integrated therapy and 20 pateints received West medical therapy. We estimated the subjects's status with Sasang Constitutional Symptomatic Scale (SCSS) prior to therapy and at 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks after the starting each therapy. Results : There is no significant difference in SCSS between two group from admission to 1 week. But significant difference was observed after 2 weaks. Conclusion : The results of these investment suggest that East(Sasang Constitutional medicine)-West integrated therapy is more effective in Sasang Constitutional Pathology.

Chuna Therapy and Myofascial Release Technique for the Pain Relief and Cobb's Angle Improvement in Patients with Scoliosis: Case Report (추나요법과 근막이완요법의 척추측만증 환자 4례에 대한 증례 보고)

  • Objectives: This study is designed to report the valid result of complex of Chuna Therapy and Myofascial Release Technique(MRT) on scoliosis patients. Methods: The correction program for scoliosis takes 3 month per case. Chuna Therapy and MRT were given once a week and other oriental medicine care was given twice a week to care the complications of scoliosis. The Cobb's angle(by X-ray, Full spine view) and Visual analogue scale(VAS) were evaluated before and after the treatments. Results: After the program, both of Cobb's angle and VAS decreased. Conclusions: Though it is a case report, we found Chuna Therapy and MRT might have valid effect on scoliosis patients. Further rigorous case series and controlled trials are warranted.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study is to compare the effect of Bee-Venom Therapy and common acupuncture therapy for the lateral epicondylitis. Methods : This study has been carried out for 24 cases of ankle sprain patients who have visited Dr. An Keun Hyeong's Oriental Clinic from april 1, 2004 to august 30, 2004. We have treated 12 cases of them by Bee-Venom therapy(group I) and the other 12 cases by common acupuncture therapy(group II). And we have compared those two group. Results : 1. There were statistical significance on the pain and grip strength with bee-venom therapy group. 2. There were statistical significance on the pain and grip strength with common acupuncture therapy group. 3. Bee-venom therapy group was more statistical significance than common acupuncture therapy group on the pain. 4. There were no statistical significance between bee-venom therapy group and common acupuncture therapy group on the grip strength.

A Case Study on a Patient with Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease(NAFLD) Improved on Sonography by Oriental Obesity Therapy (한방비만치료 후 초음파 영상에서 비알코올성 지방간의 호전을 보인 환자 치험 1례)

  • Objectives The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical effect of oriental obesity therapy on obese patient with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD). Methods The patient was treated from November 17, 2008 to May 15, 2009 for obesity treatment. And the patient had intensive care through admission treatment from November 17, 2008 to November 29, 2008. Electrolipolysis, auricular acupuncture, herbal medicine, low calorie diet and aerobic exercise were done during the treatment period. Results His body Weight decreased from 102.8kg to 82.7kg. The BMI decreased from 35.2kg/m$^2$ to 28.9kg/m$^2$. NAFLD effectively improved on sonography form grade II${\sim}$III to grade I${\sim}$II after oriental obesity therapy, AST decreased from 65 to 19. ALT decreased from 152 to 18. Oriental obesity therapy could be effective to treat obese patient with NAFLD. Conclusions The obese patient with NAFLD improved on sonography by oriental obesity therapy.

A Case Report of Degenerative Spondylolisthesis Treated By Oriental Medical Treatment (한방치료를 적용한 퇴행성 척추전방전위증 환자 치험 1례)

  • Objectives : This study was performed to report the effect of oriental medical treatment including chuna manual therapy for the spondylolisthesis patient. Methods : We treated him by oriental medical treatment including acupuncture, herb therapy and chuna manual therapy. And the result was assessed by numerical rating scale(NRS), walking distance at once and radiological examination. Results : After treatment, NRS changed from 8 to 4, walking distance at once changed from 175m to 500m, percent of slip changed from 28.62% to 19.80% and slip angle changed from $20.0^{\circ}$ to $22.8^{\circ}$. Conclusions : In this study, oriental medical treatment including chuna therapy was effective in spondylolisthesis patient. But additional studies will be needed.
