  • Objectives : Our study aims to help users take the medicinal materials in a desirable manner by providing toxic and contraindicating information, based on the ontology of medicinal materials in traditional Korean medicine (TKM). Methods : The toxic and contraindicating data are extracted for 160 medicinal materials from 67 books published in Korea and China. The extracted data are linked to the medicinal material in the ontology, respectively. Results : We in this paper construct an ontology for toxic and contraindicating data of medicinal materials in traditional Korean medicine (TKM), extending our conventional ontology. Based on the ontology, we devised a web-based searching tool that enables users to share the toxic and contraindicating information of medicinal materials. Conclusions : The contents in our ontology are facts based on the books, while the addition of clinical knowledge may elaborate the ontology. Moreover, the addition of easy explanations for terminologies in our ontology is required to help users which are not familiar to TKM.

  • To summarize and make a reference number of natural materials used to treat diabetic peripheral neuropathy. We surveyed all papers of diabetic peripheral neuropathy studies using natural materials in PubMed as "diabetic peripheral neuropathy AND plant", "diabetic peripheral neuropathy AND herbal", "diabetic peripheral neuropathy AND herb", etc. The number of papers, the formation of experiments, frequency of natural materials studies, and main studies were analyzed. Total 48 studies were finally selected. Of the papers, experiments with rats were the most common. Most studies were about fatty acids or herbal medicines. Rehmannia glutinosa, Cinnamomi Ramulus, Astragali Radix and so on were relatively studied much. This study produced an overview of worldwide natural materials used for diabetic peripheral neuropathy. This result may provide a valuable information of development of Korean herbal medicine used to treat diabetic peripheral neuropathy.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze harmful heavy metals, sulfur dioxide and residual pesticides in 30 kinds of oriental medical materials. This study was carried out on 30 samples of oriental medical materials. The examination's methods fallow the guideline of Food and Drug Administration. Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (ICP-OES) was used to analyze lead, arsenic, cadmium. Mercury was analyzed by amalgamation method. A modified Monier-Williams method was used to analyze sulfur dioxide. The Gas Chromatography / Electron Capture Detector (GC/ECD) was used to analyze residual pesticides. Most of the results were within normal limits at baseline. but Cadmium was detected 0.523 mg/kg more than 0.3 mg/kg in Cinnamomi ramulus and Endosulfan was detected 11.595 mg/kg more than 0.2 mg/kg in Alismatis rhizoma. We needs to keep the quality of herbal medicines assessing and controling for safety of herbal medicines.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze harmful heavy metals, sulfur dioxide and residual pesticides in 27 kinds of oriental medical materials. This study was carried out on 27 samples of oriental medical materials. The GC-ECD(Varian, CP-3800) was used to analyze residual pesticides. ICP-OES(Varian, Vista-MPX) was used to analyze lead, arsenic, cadmium. Mercury was analyzed by amalgamation method. A modified Monier-Williams method was used to analyze sulfur dioxide. Arsenic was detected less than 3(mg/kg) in 14 samples and was not detected 13 samples. Lead was detected less than 5(mg/kg) in 15 samples and was not detected 12 samples. Mercury was detected less than 0.2(mg/kg) in 15 samples and was not detected 12 samples. Cadmium was detected more than 0.3(mg/kg) in 3 samples was detected less than 0.3(mg/kg) in 16 samples and was not detected 11 samples. A few residual pesticides was detected, but all residual pesticides was safe. Sulfur dioxide was detected in all samples, but all residual sulfur dioxide was safe.

  • Objecitve: To present criteria for acupuncture standardization, which will improve the quality of acupuncture and secure safety, through studies of the biocompatibility of acupuncture needles. Methods: Acupuncture needles distributed in Korea were studied. Acute poisonous tests and pyrogenicity materials tests were executed to study the biocompatibility of acupuncture needles. Results & Conclusions: All 3 brands of acupuncture needles commonly distributed in Korea were found suitable for medical use, through acute poisonous tests and pyrogenicity materials tests. However, the medical instrument standards of the Korea Food and Drug Administration for acupuncture lack criteria concerning acute poisonous tests and pyrogenicity materials tests. The criteria for these tests should be standardized in order to secure the biocompatibility of acupuncture needles.

  • All medicines are poisonous, and there are none free from poison. Thus, all things may be regarded as poisonous. And poison and medicine is the same one of which actions differ from each other. Medicine may be good medicine or poison according to doses, whether chemical medicine or herbal one. Herbal medicine falls into the category of natural materials. From ancient times humankind has Been using animals and plants as food, but on the other hand, chemical medicine is unfamiliar relatively to natural materials. Somecine is unfamilis, absorbed into the human boan, are transformed and help deemicfication. Other medicines protect the gastric mucous membrane and are demulcent, and inhibithemica materials from being absorbed. In some cases, ine is unfamilis function as deemicfiers in combination withhemica materials, and remove the toxicity and side effect caused by drug properties. Herbal medicine causes less side effects, as compared to chemical one, and thus can work effectively. As the case stands, some deem that herbal medicine does not cause problems despite high dose and long-term use because it is nontoxic or low-toxic. However, herbal medicine may be also poisonous though it is used at a very low dose. Even a deadly poison may produce therapeutic results satisfactorily without side effects, on condition that it is used properly.

  • In this study, we considered the usecase of formulas containing either Fritillaria Bulb (川貝母) or Fritillaria Thunbergii Bulb (浙貝母). These two medicinal materials are distinguished in the Korea Pharmacopoeia and circulating the market separately. But only term "貝母" is traditionally written for describing formulas, and the proper material will have to be determined by a subjective point of view. So, we have comparatively studied the nature, flavor, meridian entry, effect and indication of two materials first. Then we have chosen 54 formulas that "貝母" was used as a primary material from the Donguibogam and the Bangyachappyun, and we have compared effects, indications of two materials and indication of 54 formulas. Finally, we have suggested proper materials for each formula by referring the results above and sentences, which is explaining formulas and the roles of materials in the combination for treatment. The analysis showed that Fritillaria Bulb is proper to 15 formulas, Fritillaria Thunbergii Bulb is proper to 31 ones. This number is 85.2% of 54 formulas and this result shows that we need to distinguish between two materials for "貝母" in the formulas from old traditional literature. For the rest 8 formulas (14.8%), we could not analyze which material is proper or not.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to investigate on storage characteristics of flavouring oriental medicine materials according to Packaging method(Aluminum package, PP). Methods : This experiments were carried out by field survey and storage characteristics were carried out by physicochemical determination. Results : Flavouring oriental medicine materials were used to in aluminum package to keep original flavour in Japan and Chinese by field and study survey. In view of this survey results, it is very desirable to use zipper Aluminum package in flavouring oriental medicine materials(Perilla perfrutescens var. acuta, Mentha arvensis L. var. piperascens malinvaud). Conclusions : This study results revealed that Aluminum package were superior to any other package method on the basis of keeping original flavour and to reduce microbial contamination in oriental medicine materials.
