  • The five viscera[五藏], one of the key concepts from Traditional Oriental Medicine in understanding the nature of human body, endows the characteristic of five phases[五行] on the five representative organs, based on the five phases theory[五行論]. Although the theory from "Geummun-Sangseo(今文尙書)" which states the order of 'liver-mok[肝木] heart-hwa[心火] pancreas-to[脾土] lung-geum[肺金] kidney-su[腎水]' is now widely approved by present-day academics concerning arrangement of five changes and the five viscera, there are some other less-known theories of arrangement. "Gomun-Sangseo[古文尙書]" had suggested the order of 'pancreas-mok[脾木] lung-hwa[肺火] heart-to[心土] liver-geum[肝金] kidney-su[腎水]', which was never practiced, and "Dong-uisusebowon(東醫壽世保元)" of Ijema(李濟馬) expressed the theory of 'lung-mok[肺木] pancreas-hwa[脾火] heart-to[心土] liver-geum[肝金] kidney-su[腎水]'.

  • In order to investigate the meanings and bases of transforming theories of diseases(病傳論), several relevant theories were collected from medical books since . The outside-to-inside changing process(pyoree jeon) was the fundamental pattern in febrile diseases regardless of slang han and wen bing after Han dynasty. But in case of numb disease the three exogenous pathogenic factors of wind, cold and dampness got into each viscera through five tissues like skin, vessesl, flesh, tendons, bones respectively. It was called corresponding changing process(sanghap jeon) here. The pathogenic changing process(byungsa jeon) had complicated details to explain pathologic processes, but could give useful informations on evaluating relative strength of pathogens and tendency ahead. The changing process of diseases of internal injuries were explained in case of emotional distress which is outbroken abruptly didn't follow regular order of viscera-emotion relations. So it was named random changing process(bulcha jeon) after 's usage. And marasmus and asthenic disease followed top-to-down or down-to-top changing process(sangha jeon) based on . There are many types of changing process of diseases between viscera and viscera or viscera and bowels like generation changing process, restriction changing process, changing process between couple, changing process of mutual transmission based on attributions of each element by the theory of 5 phases(五行論). And changing process to a neighbor doesn't have any special relations within two organs but has anatomical contiguity and physiological continuity between them. The transforming theories of diseases bring forth useful understanding on comings and goings of pathogenic factors and tendency and prognosis of disease, so they are needed to be taught in the course of pathology class.

  • The "Ojangyukbudo五臟六腑圖", cited in "Ojangmun五藏門" of "Euibangyuchwi醫方類聚", was written by Ho Eum, a woman Taoist master who lived in Dang Dynasty. She put stress on the medical theory of the five viscera and the six entrails to overcome the side effects of Oedansul[alchemy for immortality] which prevailed during the period of Dang, and established a medical system which was based on six viscera and entrails and combined with Taoist theories. The major features of "Ojangyukbudo五臟六腑圖" can be summarized in the six-part medical system, the diagrams which describe the principles of viscera and entrails in detail, and the methods of Suyang[修養法:mental training], Tonap[吐納 法:respiration] and Doin[導引法:physical training] for regulating the functions of viscera and entrails and curing diseases. The "Dongeuibogam東醫寶鑑", a medical book from Joseon Dynasty, accepted the methods of Suyang and Doin, and the "Yorayak要略", a transcript from Joseon's later period, accepted the Taoist medicine based on six viscera and entrails, combined it with the contents of "Dongeuibogam東醫寶鑑", thus composing a unique medical system. Especially, the "Yorayak要略" is a literature important for the study of Joseon's Taoist medicine.

  • The study is written for the purpose of examining Na Cheon Ik(羅天益)'s medical ideology mentioned in Euian(醫案) of "Wi-saeng-bo-gam 衛生寶鑑". The publication of this book is reflected in the 13th century perplexed conditions. In this thesis, after the writer analyzed Na Cheon Ik(羅天益)'s medical theory in "Wi-saeng-bo-gam 衛生寶鑑", knew that he emphasized practical use on all occasions. So far, Na Cheon Ik(羅天益)'s medical ideology in "Wi-saeng-bo-gam 衛生 寶鑑" is hardly studied. "Wi-saeng-bo-gam 衛生寶鑑" is a medical book which was written in the process of systemic recognized of medical theories of various and special academic parties in the period J inYuan(金元). The medical theory that appears in "Wi-saeng-bo-gam 衛生寶鑑" is rooted in Li Dong Yuan(李東垣)'s theory, but also Na Cheon Ik(羅天益)'s medical ideology is distinguished from Li Dong Won(李東垣)'s ideology. First of all, Na Cheon Ik(羅天 益) recognized the importance of discerning not only On-Bo(溫補) but also Han-Ha-To(汗下吐) and various ways in medical treatment. Secondly, the fact that Na Cheon Ik(羅天益) made good use of moxibustion tells the difference between the two. In conclusion, "Wi-saeng-bo-gam 衛生寶鑑" holds systemic medical information which was originated with Na Cheon Ik(羅天益)'s various and special experience. • We have known that "Chimgudaeseong(鍼灸大成)" had been written by Yanggyeju(楊繼洲) in Myeong(明) Dynasty. And it had been the only text book of acupuncture & moxibustion for 300 years. This book is composed of 10 chapters dealing almost all the medical theories of that times. This book is so enormous that it is hard to understand essential ideas of author. The reading medical records is one of the best way to develop one's abilities of curing a disease without clinical practice. so we can't help dealing with medical records, because it is one of important method of understanding Oriental Medicine. On this study, we investigate a objective method on understanding medical records in "Chimgudaeseong(鍼灸大成)".

  • Objective : The objective of this study is to verify the characteristics of acupuncture methods of Joseon Dynasty by looking into the relationship between five viscera diagnosis and acupuncture methods. Material & Method : In the process, I've reviewed the relationship between meridian/exterior and viscera/bowels, along with a thorough comparison of the academic tendency in acupuncture of Ming-China, Qing-China and Joseon. Result & Conclusion : The two fields of meridian and exterior, and viscera and bowels had been theoretically merged, and based upon that, foundation methods applying the five viscera diagnosis were designed. Joseon acupuncture exceeded the existing concept of viscera which simply related itself to the exterior meridian and exterior by integrating the concepts from the visceral manifestation theory. With this, large proportions of medicine related to the visceral manifestation theory were invited into acupuncture, expanding therapeutic boundaries for acupuncture treatment. A historical review on medical texts starts from the Hyangyakjipseongbang("鄕藥集成方") which familiarized the public with mainstream acupuncture knowledge up until the Song dynasty, followed by Uibangyuchwi("醫方類聚"), which sparked up interest on the acupuncture methods based on viscera and bowels. Donguibogam("東醫寶鑑") organized the medical theories up until then, building a foundation upon which viscera/bowel-based acupuncture was able to develop further. In Chimgugyeongheombang("鍼灸經驗方"), viscera/bowel-based acupuncture methods started to blossom, integrating the meridian and exterior theory with the viscera manifestation theory, which in turn provided various methods through five viscera diagnosis. In the Saamdoin acupuncture method(舍岩道人鍼法), diagnostic criteria moved on to the five viscera diagnosis, and new methods resulting from the inter-complimentary and inter-prohibiting relationships between the five phases were introduced, opening a new world of acupuncture.
