Regarding the familiarity with medicinal herbs, the subjects, regardless of their age, showed a high perception of easily accessible medicinal herbs; younger subjects preferred Schisandrae fructus, Rubi fructus and Acanthopanacis cortex. The higher the perception and the eating frequency were, the higher the familiarity was. Regarding the development of medicinal food menus, the older the subjects were, the more positive they viewed the development of menus. Also, dietitians with 15 years of experience showed a high interest in the development of new menus.
Objecives : Aucklandiae Radix is a root of Aucklandia lappa which has been widely used for regulating the flow of vital energy, invigorating the spleen, alleviating pain. Aucklandiae Radix contains the costunolide which is the main ingredient. The substitutive Aucklandiae Radix are Inulae helenii Radix, Aristolchiae Radix, Vladimiriae Radix, and Inulae racemosi Radix in Korea and China. This paper is analysised and compared the costunolide and HPLC pattern in Aucklandiae Radix and substitute herbs. Methods : Chromatographic separation performed using C18 column(Luna 5 u, 250 mm ${\times}$ 4.6 mm) with a mixture of methanol and water(65:35)(v/v). The analyses detected at UV(210 nm). Results : Optimal extraction condition of costunolide was 100% methanol for 2hr. Costunolide was detected in Aucklandiae Radix and Vladimiriae Radix, but other herbs were not detected. In Korea herbal market, Aristolchiae Radix merchandise was identified as the imported Inulae helenii Radix. Conclusions : According to above results, this method was useful identified to Aucklandiae Radix and substitutive herbs. In Korea herbal market, Aristolchiae Radix was identified as Inulae helenii Radix.
Objectives : Imyosan (IMS), a drug preparation comprised of Phellodendri Cortex (PC) and Atractylodis Rhizoma (AR), is commonly used as a traditional herbal medicine in Korea and China for the treatment of various inflammatory diseases. However, little is known about the effect of IMS and its component herbs on inflammatory mediators in RAW 264.7 cells. Therefore, in this study, methanol extracts of IMS and its component herbs were examined to determine if they inhibited inflammatory effects in RAW 264.7 cells. Methods : Cytotoxic activity of IJHT and its components on RAW 264.7 cells was using 5-(3-carboxymethoxyphenyl)-2H-tetrazolium inner salt (MTS) assay. The nitric oxide (NO) production was measured by Griess reagent system. And proinflammatory cytokines were measured by ELISA kit. The levels of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression were detected by western blot. Results : Methanol extract of IMS and its component herbs were significantly reduced iNOS and COX-2 expression as well as NO, PGE2, $IL-1{\beta}$ and IL-6 production in RAW 264.7 cells. Conclusions : The results of this study indicated that the anti-inflammatory effect of Imyosan extract is more potent than that of extracts of its component herbs in macrophages.
Objective : This study aims to study core herbs and formulas in Internal medicine on Spleen system, to enhance efficiency in teaching Internal medicine on Spleen system, Herbalogy, Formula science, and to increase integration of the courses. Objectives & Methods : To compare the medicinal herbs between Ayurvedic medicine and traditional Korean medicine(TKM), we took reference of major publications related to Ayurvedic medicinal herbs such as Indian Herbal Remedies, Prime Ayurvedic Plant Drugs, with those of TKM. We selected most widely used 130 herbal species of Ayurvedic medicine and compared the similarities and differences with TKM. Comparative factors were the origin, habitation, synonyms, usage, medicinal parts, and precautions. Results : 1. The medicinal herbs Resinatum Lignum(沈香), Arecae Pericarpium(大腹皮), Arecae Semen(檳榔), Carthami Flos (紅花), Camphorum(樟腦), Crotonis Semen(巴豆), Curculiginis Rhizoma(仙茅) used in TKM did exactly correlate in their origins with those of Ayurvedic medicine. 2. Varieties of allied species were found in their origins. Benincasae Pericarpium(冬瓜皮), and Benincasae Semen(冬瓜子) derive from the same plant Benincasa hispida Cogn. for both Ayurvedic medicine and TKM. Interestingly, B. cerifera Savi. is also claimed for same uses in Ayurvedic medicine. This broadened use of allied species is found in various Ayurvedic herbal medicine such as Cannabis Semen(火麻仁) using Cannabis indica Lam., and Curcuma Longae Rhizoma(薑黃) using Curcuma domestica Valeton. This suggests the possibility of their usage also in TKM. 3. Myrrha(沒藥), and Curculiginis Rhizoma concorded their usage with TKM. While Arecae Pericarpium(大腹皮), Arecae Semen(檳榔), Aquilariae Resinatum Lignum(沈香), Pericarpium(冬瓜皮), Benincasae Semen(冬瓜子), Cannabis Semen(火麻仁), Carthami Flos(紅花), Camphorum(樟腦), Crotonis Semen(巴豆), Curcumae Radix(鬱金), Curcuma Longae Rhizoma(薑黃) and Zedoariae Rhizoma(莪朮) revealed varied efficacies according to their part used or usage forms. Conclusion : Both Ayurvedic medicine and TKM reflect the traditional medicine of its regions where is founded. Mutual understanding improves the capability of coping of diverse ailments of present days and also replacing some plants in the days of increasing threat to our environment. Abundant external applications of various plants found in Ayurvedic medicine were particularly useful for TKM to complement its strength in herbal intake.

We re-classified traditional medicinal prescriptions in Dong-Eui-Bo-Gam for the modern application using Tradimed database. They could be devided into 6 categories by the definitions of the related laws. Herbal ethical drugs are the majority, 3926 items, account for 60.21% of total items. Herbal Health Functional Foods stands second, 1480 items, 22.70%, Herbal over the counter drugs are 893 items, 13.69%. These three categories are about 83% of total items. Herbal medical supplies are 158 items, 2.42%, Herbal medical tools are 44 items, 0.67%, Herbal cosmetics are 20 items, occupied 0.31 %. Therefore we have known that traditional medicinal prescriptions can be used not only as drugs, but also as funtional foods, cosmetics, and tools. So they should be developed as modern products to make best use of them. And we suggested that we need official criteria of herbs of careful use and higher standards for herbs which can be used as foods.
Objectives & Methods : The main point of this literatual study was to develop an external treatment on sprain using adhesive herbal pack. Results & Conclusions : The herbs which was used in adhesive treatment matched the same function with oral herb medicine such as, promoting blood flow to remove blood stasis, relieving rheumatic conditions, and removing obstruction in meridians and collaterals. Based on these function it was reviewed that adhesive herbal pack directly effected the sprain region from herbs by using alcohol, water to produce the pack. But even though it is known that the method of adhesive herbal treatment changes, most treatment still uses the traditional method. So researching on adhesive herbal treatment is required in the future.
