This study aims to compare and analyze somatotype characteristics in clothing ergonomics as well as Sasang (Oriental physical constitution type classification into 4 kinds: taeyang, taeeum, soyang, soeum) medicine. The subjects were women collegians in their 20s. As a result, a new approach was made in somatotype classification. The following are conclusions: 1. The results of body measurement of the subjects belonged to 1 in most items when they were compared with the average records of female adults in their 20s in the national standard physique report. Thus, the subjects belonged to the average somatotype. 2. According to Sasang physical constitution classification, no subjects belonged to taeyang-type. Taeeum type (28.4%), had lower-body development greatest height and even development in width, thickness and girth. Soeum-type(37.8%) had the smallest physique. Soyang-type(33.8%) showed small values in height but great values in width, thickness and girth. 3. The factor analysis revealed 5 factors of somatotype characteristics: lower body factors including body weight, upper body factors, height factors including stature, belly width factors including waist and belly, and other factors comprising ankle and head size. 4. A cluster analysis by way of factor scores resulted in 3 types: cluster 1 44.6%, biggest values, largest somatotypes; cluster 2 17.6%, average somatotypes; cluster 3 tiniest somatotypes in most items. 5. In the crosstabs analysis, taeeum-type (57.6%) appeared a lot in cluster 1, soyang-type (76.9%) appeared most in cluster 2, and soeum-type (69.9%) was mostly seen in cluster 3. To sum up, the somatotype analysis of clothing ergonomics had something to do with constitution classification suggested in Sasang medicine. For clear justification, more systematic and scientific research should be followed with even more diverse subjects in sex and age.
Myeong(明) Dynasty Period put together clinically various medical theory in Song(宋) Dynasty and Geum-Won(金元) age, organized medical system. They have been developed in theory, which thought of Byeonjeungronchi(辨證論治) more important, and clinical part which included diagnosis, therapy, prevention. In that age reactional medical thought was in fashion because of affect of Ihak(理學), therefore pediatrics have been affected from them. Especially, looking at the symptom of Byeonjeungronchi doctors, Manjeon(萬全), Nobaeksa(魯伯嗣), Wangdaeryun(王大綸), Wanggeungdang(王肯堂), Nuyeong(樓英) had succeed to Jeoneul(錢乙)' the five viscera Byeonjeung(辨證) system. Manjeon advocated Samyuyeosabujokron(三有餘四不足論) about Jangbu(臟腑) and organized the curative principle about Ojangheosil(五臟虛實). Gupyeong(寇平), commented on diagnosis of five viscera and classification of disease of five viscera. Wangdaeryun in the close of Myeong Dynasty Age explained main pulse, pulse of illness in detail according to weakness or strength of five viscera, pathological or physiological features of five viscera and Saenggeuk(生克) relation of Ohaeng(五行) in the book of "Yeongdongryuchwe(嬰童類萃)". Wanggeungdang and Nuyeong had organized system of argument which classified disease as a result of symptom of five viscera. "Yugwajeungchijunseung(幼科證治準繩)" and "Uihakgangmok(醫學綱目) Soabu(小兒部)" had been written by this principle. Nobaeksa had arranged the principle of cure about five viscera and explained method of common use about each organ's disease. Besides, Seolgi(薛己), Janggyeong-ak(張景岳), insisted about Myeongmun(命門) because he thought of Bisin(脾腎) of children and vigor by nature importance. Seolgi had applied and used very well Bojung-ikgitang(補中益氣湯) based on Idongwon(李東垣)'s Biwiseol(脾胃說) and controled and helped spleen and stomach. At the same time, he took a serious view about supplementing children's Sin-gi(腎氣) according to so many spleen and stomach disease was fallen because they couldn't make warm the spirit of Jungju(中州), result of weakening Hwa(火) of Myeongmun. Also Janggyeong-ak took a serious view strengthen of Bisin, so he assorted and used Insam(人蔘) and Buja(附子) to supplement children's weaken energy in kidney Jeonggi(精氣).

Objective : Hedyotis diffusa has been used as an anticancer agent for several decades in oriental medicine. We test whether the methanol extract of the herb affects transcriptional activation factors including $NF-{\kappa}B$ and AP-1. Methods : 1. HL-60 cells were treated with various concentrations(from 200 to $50{\mu}g/ml$) of methanol extract and $H_2O$ extract($200{\mu}g/ml$)of hedyotis diffusa, After 48h later, the cells were tested for viability by MTT assay. 2. The HL-60 cells were treated with $200{\mu}g/ml$ of methanol extract for the indicated periods. First. Nuclear extracts were isolated and incubated with oligonucleotide probe of $NF-{\kappa}B$ and AP-1. Second. Nuclear extracts were isolated and reacted with p50, p65. c-rel pan-Jun, c-Jun, JunB. JunD antibody on ice for 30min. Finally The cell lysates were prepared and analyzed by western blotting using anti-Fas, anti-FasL and anti-p53 antibody. Results : 1. The methanol extract decreases the viability of human lymphoid origin leukemia HL-60 cells in a dose-dependent manner. 2. $NF-{\kappa}B$ is rapidly activated by the addition of the methanol extract, reaches a peak at 30min and gradually returns to resting level. We confirm that $NF-{\kappa}B$ is a heterodimer mainly composed of p65 subunit with c-Rel. 3. Transcriptional activation of AP-1 is detected at 30min and reaches a maximum at 1hr after stimulation of the cells with the methanol extract. AP-1 is mainly composed with Jur-D and partially Jug-B proteins. 4. the methanol extract of Hedyotis diffusa induces the expression of Fas, Fas ligand and p53 proteins of HL-60 cells in a time dependent fashion. Conclusions : These results suggest that the methanol extract of Hedyotis diffusa exerts anticancer effects to induce the death of human leukomic HL-60 cells via activation of trascriptional factors such as $NF-{\kappa}B$ and AP-1, increase in expression of Fas mediated signalling proteins, and induction of tumor suppressor gene. p53.
Objectives : This study was carried out to determine whether Juglandis Semen herbal acupuncture (JSA) exerts the protective effect against toxic agent-induced live. cell damage. Methods : The cell damage was estimated by measuring lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release, and lipid peroxidation was estimated by measuring maiondialdehyde (MDA), a product of lipid peroxidation, in rabbit liver slices. Results : When tissues were incubated with 0.5 mM Hg for $10{\sim}120\;min$, LDH release and lipid peroxidation were increased as a function of incubation time, and these effects were significantly prevented by addition of 0.1% JSA. Hg increased LDH release and lipid peroxidation in dose-dependent manner over the range of $0.1{\sim}l\;mM$ concentrations, which were reduced by 0.1% JSA. When tissues were treated with 0.5 mM Hg in the presence of $0.05{\sim}l\;%$ JSA, LDH release and lipid peroxidation induced by Hg were prevented by JSA in a dose-dependent fashion. JSA at 0.5 and 1% prevented completely effects of 0.5 mM Hg. When tissues were treated with 0.5 mM Hg for 60 min, LDH release and lipid peroxidation were increased, which were significantly prevented by addition of 0.1 % JSA. tert-Butyl hydroperoxide (tBHP) increased LDH release and lipid peroxidation, which were significantly reduced by 0.1 % JSA. Such protective effects were similar to those of N,N'-diphenyl-p-phenylenediamine (DPPD), a potent antioxidant. When tissues were treated with 0.5 mM Hg, activities of catalase and glutathione peroxidase were inhibited, and glutathione content was also reduced. Such effects were prevented by JSA, but not by DPPD. JSA prevented Hg-induced morphological changes. Conclusions : These results indicate that JSA exerts the protective effect against liver cell injury induced by toxic agents through antioxidant action, and this effect may be attributed to an increase in activities of endogeous anitoxidant enzymes and GSH content. However, antioxidant effect of JSA is different from that of a well-known potent antioxidant DPPD.

Epidemiological studies have indicated that the ubiquitous consumption of seaweeds is a protective factor against some types of cancer. Previous results showed that the administration of seaweed powder or extract reduced the incidence rate of chemically induced tumorigenesis using in vivo animal model. Recently, we reported that the extracts of Gloiopeltis furcata, a kind of Korean edible seaweed, caused he cell growth inhibition of various human cancer cell lines, among them methanol extract exhibited a relatively strong antiproliferative activity. However, the molecular mechanisms of this seaweed in malignant cells have been poorly studied until now. To elucidate this problem, we investigated the effects of methanol extract of G. furcata (MEGF) on the growth inhibition in several human cancer cell lines, and further we analyzed the effects of this extract were tested on the activity of apoptosis induction in human leukemic cells. The results demonstrated that MEGF treatment resulted in the morphological changes and the growth inhibition in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, MEGF potently suppresses the growth of human leukemic U937 cells by induction of apoptosis, which was associated with induction of cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p21(WAF1/CIP1) in a tumor suppressor p53-independent fashion and up-regulation of Fas/FasL system. Further studies will be needed to identify the active compounds that confer the anticancer activity of MEGF. Once such compounds are identified, the mechanisms by which they exert their effects can begin to be characterized.

Peroxynitrite ($ONOO^-$) is a reactive oxidant formed from superoxide anion radical (${\cdot}\;O_2-$) and nitric oxide (NO), which can oxidize cellular components such as essential protein, non-protein thiols, DNA, low-density lipoproteins and membrane phospholipids. ${\cdot}\;O_2-$ and $ONOO^-$ have contributed to the pathogenesis of diseases such as stroke, heart disease, Alzheimer's disease and atherosclerosis. Because of damaging effects of ${\cdot}\;O_2-$ and $ONOO^-$ oxidants, Vespae Nidus, which has been known to strengthen the kidneys to preserve the vital energy. was tested as a potential specific scavenger of those oxidants. In this study, the viability of Vespae Nidus (1, 10, 50 g/ml) to scavenge ${\cdot}\;O_2-$, NO, $ONOO^-$ and so to protect cells against tert-butylhydroxyperoxide (t-BHP) induced cell death was tested. The levels of ${\cdot}\;O_2-$ and $ONOO^-$ were detected by staining with DCFH-DA and DHR 123, respectively. Protein expression levels of COX-2, iNOS and $NF{-\kappa}B$ were assayed by western blot. Vespae Nidus blocked t-BHP-induced cell death in a dose-dependent fashion. Vespae Nidus inhibited t-BHP-induced production of ${\cdot}\;O_2-$, NO and $ONOO^-$ in YPEN cells. The lipid peroxide level was increased and glutathione level was decreased in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated ICR mouse, whereas the ones in the Vespae Nidus-administered group were regulated beneficially. Vespae Nidus inhibited the expression of COX-2, iNOS and NF-κB (p65 and p50) genes in LPS-treated ICR mouse. The present study suggests that Vespae Nidus is a powerful antioxidant and promotes cellular defense activity by scavenging the toxic oxidants such as ${\cdot}\;O_2-$ and $ONOO^-$.
This study was undertaken to determine Juglandis Semen extraction (JS) has a protective effect against the cell injury caused by oxidants, t-butylhydroperoxide (t-BHP) and $H_{2}O_2$ in rabbit lung slices. Cell injury was estimated by measuring tissue water content and peroxidation of membrane lipids was assessed by measuring malondialdehyde (MDA), an end-product of lipid peroxidation. t-BHP significantly increased water content in lung tissues over concentrations of 2-10 mM, and such effects were prevented by 5% JS. JS exerted the beneficial effect in a dose-dependent manner. $H_{2}O_2$ (100 mM) also increased water content in tissues, which was almost completely prevented by 5% JS. t-BHP induced lipid peroxidation in a dose-dependent fashion in lung tissues over concentrations of 0.5-10 mM. JS significantly reduced t-BHP induced lipid peroxidation and oxidant-independent endogenous lipid peroxidation, and such effects were dose-dependent at concentration of 0.5-10%. JS prevented $H_{2}O_2$ (100 mM)-dependent lipid peroxidation. These results suggest that JS prevents ceil injury induced by oxidants in the lung, and such effects may be attributed to inhibition of lipid peroxidation. The precise mechanisms remains to be explored.

The fruits of Cornus officinalis have been used in traditional Oriental medicine for treatment of inner ear diseases, such as tinnitus and hearing loss. In the present study, we showed that the ursolic acid obtained from Corni fructus protected HEI-OC1 auditory cells from hydrogen peroxide cytotoxicity in a dose-dependent fashion. In addition, to investigate the protection mechanism of ursolic acid on hydrogen peroxide cytotoxicity toward HEI-OC1, we measured the effects of ursolic acid on lipid peroxidation and activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) in hydrogen peroxide treated cells. Ursolic acid (0.05 - 2 ${\mu}g/ml$) had protective effect against the hydrogen peroxide-induced HEI-OC1 cell damage and reduced lipid peroxidation in a dose-dependent manner. Pre-treatment with ursolic acid significantly attenuated the decrease in activities of CAT and GPX, but SOD activity was not affected by the ursolic acid or hydrogen peroxide. These results indicate that ursolic acid protects hydrogen peroxide-induced HEI-OC1 cell damage through inhibition of lipid peroxidation and induce the antioxidant enzymes CAT and GPX.
This study was undertaken to determine if Salviae Radix (SR) exerts protective effect against oxidant-induced inhibition of phosphate uptake in renal proximal tubular cells. Membrane transport function and cell death were evaluated by measuring phosphate uptake and trypan blue exclusion, respectively, in opossum kidney (OK) cells, an established proximal tubular cell line. $H_2O_2$ was used as a model oxidant. $H_2O_2$ inhibited the phosphate uptake in a dose-dependent manner over the concentration range of 0.1-0.5 mM. Similar fashion was observed in cell death. However, the phosphate uptake was more vulnerable to $H_2O_2$ than cell death, suggesting that $H_2O_2$-induced inhibition of phosphate uptake is not totally attributed to cell death. Decreasedphosphate uptake was associated with ATP depletion and inhibition of $Na^+$-pump activity as determined by direct inhibition of $N^+-K^+$-ATPase activity. When cells were treated with $H_2O_2$ in the presence of 0.05% SR, the inhibition of phosphate uptake and cell death induced by $H_2O_2$ was significantly attenuated. SR restored ATP depletion and decreased $Na^+-K^+$-ATPase activity, and this is likely responsible for the protective effect of SR on decreased phosphate uptake. The protective effect of SR was similar to the $H_2O_2$ scavenger catalase. SR reacts directly with $H_2O_2$ to reduce the effective concentration of the oxidant. The iron chelator deferoxamine prevented the inhibition of phosphate uptake and cell death induced by $H_2O_2$, suggesting that $H_2O_2$-induced cell injury is resulted from an iron-dependent mechanism. These results indicate that SR exerts the protective effect against $H_2O_2$-induced inhibition of phosphate uptake by reacting directly with $H_2O_2$ like the $H_2O_2$scavenger enzyme catalase, in OK cells. However, the underlying mechanism remains to be explored.
