This study represents that a removal efficiency of organic matters in wastewater is activated by a sludge process using new mixed microbial population. In case of mixed microorganisms, removal rates of suspended solid (SS), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were over 90 percent under experimental condition, and removal efficiency of organic matters, sludge density index (SDI) and capillary suction time (CST) in mixed population were higher than that in not-mixed microorganism, while total kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) and total phosphorus (T-P) which indicate a degree of eutrophication were removed easily in both case. From these results, we may propose that an application of the mixed microbial population is useful to treat domestic wastewater including a great deal of organic matters.
The effects of various organic wastes on anaerobic fermentative hydrogen production were studied using enriched mixed microflora in batch tests. Rotten fruit, corn powder and organic wastewater enriched with sulfate (up to 1,000 mg/L) were used for experiments. Maximum hydrogen production (547.1 mL) was observed from rotten apple with initial substrate concentration of 132.2 g COD/L. The experimental result on sulfate enriched organic wastewater indicated that hydrogen production is not adversely influenced by relatively high sulfate concentration. Residual sulfate content remained at 96-98 % after 75 hours of reaction, which showed that no major sulfate reduction was occurred at pH 5.3-5.5 in the reactor. The volatile fatty acid (VFA) fractions produced during the reaction was in the order of butyrate > acetate > propionate in all experiments. The results of this study would be useful for controlling the conditions on fermentative hydrogen production using different feedstocks.
This research aims to investigate the effects of an internal carbon source in the denitrification of piggery wastewater. In this study, the raw wastewater and the effluent from each of anoxic basin and anaerobic basin were used as the internal carbon sources. The experiments were carried out in batch system and the results are as follows ; i) Denitrification rates were the highest in the raw wastewater and the lowest in the anaerobic effluent. ii) The piggery wastewater contained about 60 percent of the readily biodegradable organic(RDCOD), which led to a conclusion that the raw wastewater could be used as the internal carbon source for the denitrification. For the efficient denitrification, pre-denitrification process was found profitable. iii) In denitrification, alkalinity production rates were in the range of 3.4 to $3.6mgCaCO_3/mgNO_3-N$. iv) The denitritation of piggery wastewater came out to be possible, and the rate of organic carbon consumption decreased about 10 percent.
The purpose of this study was to suggest the alternative measures to properly manage the water quality of Lake Euiam, Chuncheon. Current pollution level of Gongji stream (influent to Lake Euiam) and sources of contamination in Lake Euiam were investigated. Particle size, organic matter and nutrient contents, heavy metals were analyzed for sediment samples taken from lower region of Gongji stream. Average organic matter content of nine sediment samples was 5.7%, and for nitrogen and phosphorus it was 750 mg/kg and 977mg/kg, respectively. Heavy metals including aluminum, iron, manganese and zinc were measured, whereas Cd and As were not detected. Effluent from Chuncheon Wastewater Treatment Plant appeared to be one of the main cause of organic matter and nutrients level in Lake Euiam. Inhibition of primary production and consequent reduction of organic matter content within the Lake should be a key measure to protect the water quality of Lake Euiam. Preventive measures to reduce the level of nutrients in wastewater treatment effluent were found necessary.

The objective of this work was to analyze organic matter removal, nitrification, biomass growth and membrane fouling in a submerged flat-sheet membrane bioreactor, fed with synthetic wastewater, of similar composition to the effluents generated in a fish meal industry. After biomass acclimatization with saline conditions of 12 gNaCl/L and COD/N ratio of 15 in the bioreactor, results showed that the organic matter removal was higher than 90%, for all organic loading rates (0.8, 1, 1.33 and $2gCOD/L{\cdot}d$) and nitrogen loading rates (0.053, 0.067, 0.089 and $0.133gN/L{\cdot}d$) tested during the study. However, nitrification was only carried out with the lowest OLR ($0.8gCOD/L{\cdot}d$) and NLR ($0.053gN/L{\cdot}d$). An excessive concentration of organic matter in the wastewater appears as a limiting factor to this process' operating conditions, where nitrification values of 65% were reached, including nitrogen assimilation to produce biomass. The analysis of membrane fouling showed that the bio-cake formation at the membrane surface is the most impacting mechanism responsible of this phenomenon and it was demonstrated that organic and nitrogen loading rates variations affected membrane fouling rate.
In this research, the synthetic livestock wastewater was prepared to study the characteristics of organic matter removal, the change of VFA production, and the amount of gas production with respect to the change of ammonium nitrogen concentration in the waste using anaerobic fixed bed process, which is an anaerobic biofilm process. The HRT and operation temperature were 1 day and $35{\pm}1^{\circ}C$, respectively. Also, the characteristics of organic matter removal and the inhibitory effect on microorganism in the anaerobic process were studied on the organic loading and ammonium nitrogen concentration. The results obtained were as follows: For COD loading of $10kg/m^3$-day and five levels of ammonium nitrogen concentration ranging from 1,000 to 5,000 mg/L, organic removal efficiencies were about 81, 74, 67, 58, and 51%, and gas productions were 3,860, 3,520, 3,240, 3,020, and 2,790 ml/l-day, respectively. Average methane contents in the gas produced on COD loading of $10kg/m^3$-day was about 76%. Throughout the whole period of experiment, remaining VFA (as COD base) in the effluent was over 90% of remaining COD. This result indicated the inhibitory effect of high concentration of ammonium nitrogen through the facts that accumulated VFA was almost COD and organic removal efficiency decreased also with the increase of ammonium nitrogen. Especially, that implys which high concentration of ammonium nitrogen not only inhibits methane forming bacteria, but also acid forming bacteria.

BNR process is an effective method to remove high strength nitrogen included in wastewater and piggery wastewater. There have been many former studies about the induction of nitritation which have many advantages than full nitrification and the impacting factors on nitritation. Especially, it is reported that organic matter has a relation with nitritation. In this study, laboratory sacle reactor was operated using effluent of anaerobic digester, piggery wastewater and anaerobic digester effluent of piggery wastewater. After analyzing the operating results, the impact of organic matter on nitritation was analyzed by classified COD fractions. It was showed that nitritation is affected by organic matter especially by Ss. In conclusion, organic matter should be managed not just as a single gross parameter but in a classified form.
The removal efficiency of organic compounds and the toxicity evaluation of microorganism have been studied in dye wastewater treatment using $UV/TiO_2$ and $UV/H_2O_2$ photooxidation system. Sample waters tested in this work were raw dye wastewater and dye wastewater treated in $UV/TiO_2$ and $UV/H_2O_2$ photooxidation system respectively. Total organic carbon(TOC) removal rate was 50% in $UV/TiO_2$ process and 80% in $UV/H_2O_2$ process. It has been investigated with colony counting agar method and paper disk method whether the type of treatment process has affected the microorganism growth. In the raw wastewater, more than four types of microorganisms have survived. But, little of microorganisms were alive at TOC removal rate of 50% in $UV/TiO_2$ system. In contrast to that, two types of microorganisms were found at TOC removal rate of 80% in $UV/H_2O_2$ system.

Carbon nanomaterials (CNMs), particularly carbon nanotube and graphene-based materials, are rapidly emerging as one of the most effective adsorbents for wastewater treatment. CNMs hold great potential as new generation adsorbents due to their high surface to volume ratio, as well as extraordinary chemical, mechanical and thermal stabilities. However, implementation of pristine CNMs in real world applications are still hindered due to their poor solubility in most solvents. Hence, surface modification of CNMs is essential for wastewater treatment application in order to improve its solubility, chemical stability, fouling resistance and efficiency. Numerous studies have reported the applications of functionalized CNMs as very promising adsorbents for treating organic and inorganic wastewater pollutants. In this paper, the removal of organic dye and phenol contaminants from wastewater using various type of functionalized CNMs are highlighted and summarized. Challenges and future opportunities for application of these CNMs as adsorbents in sustainable wastewater treatment are also addressed in this paper.
In order to treat effectively various type of wastewater discharged from the manufacture factory of organic phosphorous agricultural pesticides by the activated sludge process. The acclimation test of sludge was carried out by the dilution of completely mixed raw wastewater. The results of experiment were obstained as follows. 1. The moderate dilution rate of mixed raw wastewater was founded to about 30 times. 2. The available range of BOD-SS loading was 0.1~0.15 $kg\cdot BOD/kg\cdot SS\cdot day$ and it was similar to the case of extended aeration activated sludge process. 3. After the acclimation of activated sludge, the concentration of MLSS was 2000 mg/L, removal efficiency of BOD more than 90%, and SVI 100, respectively. 4. The oxygen respiratory rate of acclimated sludge was $47 mg\cdot O_2/g\cdot hr$ and this was increased about 5 times than $10 mg\cdot O_2/g\cdot hr$ of ordinary sludge.
