The effects of liquid pig manure (LM) on the yield and quality of rice as well as soil chemical properties were determined in the field of sandy loam soil under the different fertilizer management. Treatments consisted of 100%, 130% and 160% N application rates of liquid manure as calculated on the basis of the recommended rate of nitrogen (9 kg N/10a) for rice cultivation. Chemical fertilizer (CF) was used as control. Concentrations of T-N and T-P in paddy water were measured by 5-day intervals up to 20days after application. LM treatments significantly increased T-N concentrations in paddy water proportionally with increasing rates of LM (13.2 to 25.7 mg/L). Similarly Total-P content in paddy water was increased right after LM applications but was well below the quality standard of wastewater and manure. Plant height and tillers in 100% and 130% N LM treatments were lower than those in CF control. In the 160% LM treatment, however, plant height and numbers of tillers were higher than those in the CF control. Yields in 100% LM and 160% LM plots were decreased by 3 and 5%, respectively, as compared with 422 kg per 10a in the CF plot. Rice protein contents were similar between 100% LM and CF control (about 6.8%) but it was increased to 7.2% and 7.7% in 130% LM and 160% LM treatments, respectively. Toyo-taste value in the 100% LM treatment was higher than in CF control plot. The proportions of perfect grain of the brown rice were lower in 130% LM and 160% LM treatments than that in CF control. Soil organic matter content, heavy metal and exchangeable cations were highest in the 160% LM plot. Thus considering yield and quality of rice and heavy metals contents in soil, 130% N basal application of liquid manure can be recommended for rice cultivation in this experiment.
This study was carried out to investigate the changes in soil chemical properties and yields of crops by rice-soybean rotation cropping system at silt loam soil. There were 4 rotation cropping systems; continuous rice cultivation, annual, biennial and triennial rotation of soybean and rice. There were little change in pH, organic matter, $Ca^{2+}$ and $K^+$ contents with decrease in available phosphate content in the continuous rice cropping. The cropping system of soybean-rice caused to increase in available $P_2O_5$, $K^+$ and $Ca^{2+}$ in the soil after harvest. Content of $NH_4-N$ in the soil also increased after the rotation of soybean than the continuous rice cropping in the soil during the rice growth period. These chemical change in the soil caused to increase rice growth in number of the panicles and the spikelet per square meter. The yield of rice was increased by the rotation with soybean, and was gradually increased in the triennial rotation of soybean and rice. But the yield of soybean was decreased in continuous cultivation for two or three years in the paddy field. It was recommended for annual rotation to prevent the yield of soybean from decrease.

This study investigated the chemical characteristics and microbial population during incubation of four kinds of aerated compost teas based on oriental medicinal herbs compost, vermicompost, rice straw compost, and mixtures of three composts (MOVR). It aimed to determine the effects of the aerated compost tea (ACT) based on MOVR on the growth promotion of red leaf lettuce, soybean and sweet corn. Findings showed that the pH level and EC of the compost tea slightly increased based on the incubation time except for rice straw compost tea. All compost teas except for oriental medicinal herbs and rice straw compost tea contained more ${NO^-}_3-N$ than ${NH^+}_4-N$. Plate counts of bacteria and fungi were significantly higher than the initial compost in ACT. Microbial communities of all ACT were predominantly bacteria. The dominant bacterial genera were analyzed as Bacillus (63.0%), Ochrobactrum (13.0%), Spingomonas (6.0%) and uncultured bacterium (4.0%) by 16S rDNA analysis. The effect of four concentrations, 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.4% and 0.8% MOVR on the growth of red leaf lettuce, soybean and sweet corn was also studied in the greenhouse. The red leaf lettuce with 0.4% MOVR had the most effective concentration on growth parameters in foliage part. However, 0.8% MOVR significantly promoted the growth of root and shoot of both soybean and sweet corn. The soybean treated with higher MOVR concentration was more effective in increasing the root nodule formation by 7.25 times than in the lower MOVR concentrations Results indicated that ACT could be used as liquid nutrient fertilizer with active microorganisms for culture of variable crops under organic farming condition.
BACKGROUND:Cultivation of alternative crops in paddy fields is necessary because of the decrease in rice consumption and the increase in excess stock of rice. The study was conducted to investigate the effects of alternative crops cultivation in paddy fields on soil physico-chemical characteristics and crop yield. METHODS AND RESULTS: Soybean (Glycine max), red-clover (Trifolium pratense), and water convolvulus (Ipomoea aquatica) were selected for alternative crops in the first and/or second year and rice was planted in the third year. When alternative crops were cultivated in the previous year, soil bulk density, soil hardness, and water content were lower than those for rice cultivation. Water-depth decreasing rate and aggregate content were greater for the upland-upland-paddy cropping system than upland-paddy-paddy cropping system. Cultivation of red-clover and water convolvulus for two years resulted in the high soil organic matter content. In the third year, available phosphate, exchangeable potassium, and soil cation exchange capacity were relatively high when soybean was cultivated in the previous year. In the first year, water convolvulus cultivation showed greater productivity than red-clover cultivation while the opposite pattern was found in the second year. Rice yield in the third year was greater for soybean or red-clover as a previous crop than for water convolvulus as a previous crop. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that cultivation of alternative crops in paddy fields can improve soil physical properties including bulk density, hardness, water content, and aggregate content as well as rice productivity.

A flooded rice field is one of the significant sources of anthropogenic methane (CH4) with the intensity of the emissions dependent on management practices. Incorporation of rice straw, which is one of the organic amendments, induces the increase of methane emissions during the flooding season. In this study, we measured of methane emission according to applications of rice straw in different soil textures during a cultivation period in 2017 and 2018. The fallow treatments were non application of rice straw (NA), spring plowing after spring spreading of rice straw (SPSA), spring plowing after previous autumn spreading of rice straw (SPAA), and autumn plowing after previous autumn spreading of rice straw (APAA). The SPSA treatment emitted the highest total methane from loam soil in both 2017 (596.7 CH4 kg ha-1) and 2018 (795.4 CH4 kg ha-1). The same trend was observed in silt clay loam soil; the SPSA treatment still emitted the highest amount of methane in both 2017 (845.9 CH4 kg ha-1) and 2018 (1,071.7 CH4 kg ha-1). The lowest emission among the rice straw incorporated plots came from the APAA treatment for both soil texture types in all the seasons. The conversion factors of the SPAA were 0.79 and 0.65 from the loam and silt clay loam soils, respectively. Relatedly, the conversion factors of the APAA were 0.71 and 0.43 from the loam and silt clay loam soils, respectively. The above observations mean therefore that incorporation of rice straw early in the fallow reduces methane emissions in the main rice growing season.
A field experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of N-use efficiency and rice yield by rapeseed cake(organic fertilizer) application at panicle initiation stage in machine transplating cultivation from 1999 to 2000. The rice yield increased by 4% in "50% rapeseed cake application", by 2% in "30% rapeseed cake application" at panicle initiation stage, respectively. Amount of fertilizer N uptake was high according to increasing amount of rapeseed cake application at panicle initiation stage compared with conventional treatment, but percentage recovery of fertilizer N was higher in 30% rapeseed cake application than in 50% rapeseed cake application at panicle initiation stage. Thus, this result was thought that there was more adventageous in 30% rapeseed cake application than 50% rapeseed cake application at panicle initiation stage in the fertilizer reduction or N-use efficiency respects in rice paddy.
This study was carried out to select economical byproduct composts as the substitute for the traditional organic fertilizer, Yacto, in the cultivation of ginseng seedlings, and to investigate the application method of a selected compost. Among tested byproduct composts, popped rice hull compost was the best substitute for Yacto, while the application of domestic animal manure composts resulted in red skinned roots of ginseng seedlings. Optimal mixing ratio of the popped rice hull compost with virgin soil (fine sand) were 3~4 : 1 in bulk, showing the same root yield compared to that of conventional seedbed soil. When the popped rice hull compost was lower than $1\;{\pm}\;0.1%$ in nitrogen content, the expeller cake of oil seed was added to seedbed soil to rise nitrogen content until $1\;{\pm}\;0.1%$.
The crop rotation of rice and ginseng in paddy field has very important meaning because up-land field suitable for ginseng cultivation is now being insufficient day by day in main ginseng production area. This studies were conducted to define basic problems related to ginseng cultivation and replanting in paddy field. In Keumsan district, the most serious problem on ginseng cultivation in paddy field was excess of mineral salts left behind in the soil of rice cultivation. The amounts of organic matters, CEC and the mineral elements including potassium were higher in the soil of paddy ginseng field compared to those of upland. Plant growth of 3 and 4 year old ginseng and root yield of four year old ginseng cultivated in paddy field of 1st and replanting were not decreased compared to those of 1st - planting of up-land field, but those were significantly decreased in replanted compared to those of first planted upland field. Crop rotation with ginseng and rice in paddy field seemed to be a good way to avoid hazards of continuous cropping of ginseng with it's outyield of root and less infection of diseases. Amounts of crude saponin and ginsenosides of ginseng cultivated in paddy field were not differ from those of upland field.
A long-term experiment was initiated in 1979 at Experiment Farm of Honam Agricultural Research Institute, to investigate the effects of continued use of organic matter (rice straw and compost) along with different levels of nitrogen fertilizer in rice cultivation. The soils of experimental plots is classified as Jeonbug series developed on Fluvio-marine deposits. The application rates of rice straw and compost were 5 Mg/ha/year and 10 Mg/ha/per year, respectively. The fertilizer N application rates per season were 0, 100, 150, 200, and 250 kg/ha. In 2002, after 24 years of experiment, the effect of different treatments on soil pH, characteristics soil organic matter, soil N and P were investigated. The results of the study is summarized as following. The continue use of organic matter tended to lower the soil pH, to increase organic matter and available phosphate contents. The rice straw tended to lower soil pH more than compost, while the effect of compost was greater in increasing soil organic matter and available soil P then rice straw. The application of organic matter resulted in the increase in total organic N in the soil. Such effect was greater in compost application than in rice straw application. In organic N, greatest was amino acid-N, followed by unidentifiable organic N. The least was amino sugar-N. The application of organic matter with and without nitrogen fertilizer affected the in organic fractions of P, particularly Fe-P and Al-P. The application of rice straw tended to increase Ca-P.

This experiment was conducted to investigate nutrient leaching and mobility through soil column for application of biochar pellet during rice cultivation. For nutrient leaching through soil column experiment, it was also consisted with four treatments as control, 100% of pig manure compost pellet (PMCP), biochar pellet (pig manure compost:biochar, 6:4)(BP), and slow release fertilizer (SRF). For experimental results, it was observed that $NH_4-N$ concentration in the leachate was gradually decreased at pick of 35 days and $NO_3-N$ concentration was highest from 60 to 98 days after transplanting. $PO_4-P$ concentration in the leachate was shown to be lowest in the PMCP and BP. K concentration in the leachate was highest in the control, but lowest in SRF. For mobility of nutrient in soil depths, it shown that $NH_4-N$ concentrations were highest from 40 to 60cm and did not significantly different among treatments except the control. It was observed that the deeper depth, the higher concentration for $NH_4-N$ concentrations, but for $PO_4-P$ concentrations the deeper depth, the lower concentration. And also $PO_4-P$ concentration was highest in the control. For K mobility in soil, its pattern was appeared to be approximately same between the control and PMCP, and between BP and SRF. Therefore, it might be potential to be applied biochar pellet to reduce mobility of plant nutrients for rice cultivation.
