  • Based on the redox couples of a nitroxide radical, organic radical polymers were utilized as the electrode-active or charge-storage component for a secondary battery. We call a battery composed of the radical polymer electrode as "organic radical battery". Organic radical battery has several advantages: high capacity, high power-rate performance, long cycle ability, and environmentally-benign features. Synthesis and electrochemical studies of nitroxide polymers are described. Battery fabrication and cell performance are also reported.

  • In this study, homo and copolymers of 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidyl methacrylate(TMA) and synthesized styrene derivative, 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-4-vinylbenzyl ether(TVBE) were obtained by radical polymerization and oxidized to produce corresponding polymer radicals. The polymer radicals were mixed with carbon black, binders and coated onto Al current collector. The battery performance is then characterized by fabricating coin cells. As results, the polystyrene based organic radicals show lower oxidize efficiency and discharge capacity than methacrylate based one. However, the former shows better capacities from discharge experiments performed at $60^{\circ}C$ which suggests a possible way to overcome the high temperature fade out of performance in usual organic radical batteries. Also as expected, an excellent C-rate performance is observed in all the cells consisted of organic polymer radicals.

  • An organic radical polymer (ORP) was prepared by radical polymerization and following oxidation into nitroxyl radical. Two different oxidation methods were employed and their radical concentrations were measured using electroparamagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR) and UV-visible absorption (UV-vis) spectroscopy. From these measurements, $H_2O_2-Na_2WO_4$ oxidation method exhibited a complete oxidation, which resulted in 97.6% spin concentration. Also, it was revealed that convenient and cheap UV-vis measurement was useful for preliminary radical concentration comparison. After applied as a cathode material in lithium ion batteries, ORP electrode showed a high initial capacity ($110mAh\;g^{-1}$), a good initial efficiency (96%), a very high rate performance (70% charging during 1.2 min) and stable cycle performance.

  • Many researchers have made efforts to control the stereoregularity in radical polymerization of vinyl monomers because the physical and chemical properties of the polymer are significantly affected by the stereostructure.[1]-[4] In general, monomer design, reaction conditions(e.g. solvent, temperature, and monomer concentration), and additives can alter the stereochemistry of the radical polymerization of acrylic monomer. • Various new active ester monomers based on (meth)acrylates and 4-vinylbenzoic acid have been prepared. Investigation of the controlled radical polymerization behavior of the respective monomers resulted in excellent polymerization control, thus, opening synthetic routes to reactive block copolymers. Polymer analogous reactions with amines yielded functional polymers. In the case of the copolymer poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acetone oxime acrylate) a lower critical solution temperature could be measured at $52^{\circ}C$. Thus, the reactive copolymer features two characters: reactive AND stimuliresponsive behavior.

  • Hyperbranched polysiloxysilanes (HBPSs), with a variety of terminal functional groups (vinyl, epoxy, carboxyl and hydroxyl), were synthesized by the self-polymerization of an $AB_3$ type monomer of tris(dimethylvinylsiloxy) silane, with subsequent end-functionalizations, such as epoxidation and radical addition reaction, respectively. The ratio of the $\alpha-and$ $\beta-addition$ linkages in the HBPS polymerized by hydrosilylation of the $AB_3$ monomer was found to be approximately 1 to 3. The thermal stability and solubility were affected by the terminal functional groups.

  • In order to mitigate oxidative degradation of polymer membrane during fuel cell operation, an organic radical quencher was introduced. Rutin was selected as a radical quencher and mixed with sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) to prepare composite membrane. Physicochemical properties of the composite membranes such as water uptake and proton conductivity were characterized. Hydrogen peroxide exposure experiment, which can mimic accelerated oxidative stability test during fuel cell operation, was adopted to evaluate the oxidative stability of the membranes. The composite membranes containing Rutin showed similar proton conductivity and enhanced oxidative stability compared to pristine ones.

  • Carbon nanodots were prepared by the pyrolysis of a triblock copolymer. The triblock copolymer, poly(methyl methacrylate)-b-polystyrene-b-poly(methyl methacrylate) was synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization using an initiator containing a diacetylene group. A polymer thin film on a mica substrate was prepared by spin-casting at 2,000 rpm from a 0.5 wt% toluene solution of the triblock copolymer. After drying, the cast film was vacuum-annealed for 48 h at $160^{\circ}C$. The annealed film formed a spherical morphology of polystyrene domains with a diameter of approximately 30 nm. The film was exposed to UV irradiation to induce a cross-linking reaction between diacetylene groups. In the subsequent pyrolysis at $800^{\circ}C$, the cross-linked polystyrene spheres were carbonized and the poly(methyl methacrylate) matrix was eliminated, resulting in carbon nanodots deposited on a substrate with a diameter of approximately 5 mn.

  • A variable surface coating with the potential to fulfill the requirements of industry will be presented. Via controlled radical polymerization methods from a functionalized Polymethylsilsesquioxane delivers an inorganic-organic block copolymer, which can be easily modified and tuned for different applications. Spin coated or dip coated on various substrates show promising results. By using different block copolymers the contact angle on a silicon wafer can be varied in a range of $90^{\circ}\;up\;to\;145^{\circ}$ After curing and complete condensation a perfect adhesion on glasses, plastics and metals is achieved.

  • The paper describes the preparation and characterization of conductive polyaniline-modified polymers by growing of aniline onto functionalized poly(styrene-co-p-methylstyrene) [P(St-co-MSt)]. For this purpose, P(St-co-MSt) was synthesized via nitroxide mediated radical polymerization (NMRP) and then N-boromosuccinimide was used for introduction of bromine to the benzylic positions of copolymer. Afterwards, 1,4-phenylenediamine was linked to the brominated P(St-co-MSt) and functionalized copolymer $[P(St-co-MSt)-NH_2]$ was prepared. The graft copolymerization of aniline monomers onto functionalized P(St-co-MSt) was initiated by oxidized phenylamine groups after addition of ammonium peroxydisulfate (APS), and p-toluenesulfonic acid-doped PANI was chemically grafted onto P(St-co-MSt) via oxidation polymerization. The obtained terpolymer was studied by FTIR and UV-Vis spectroscopy and its thermal behaviour were examined by DSC and TGA analyses. The conductivity of terpolymer was measured by four-point probe method and electroactivity was measured by cyclic voltammetry (CV). The solubility of P(St-co-MSt)-g-PANI was examined in common organic solvents.
