In this paper a boundary element method is developed for the general flexural-torsional buckling analysis of Timoshenko beams of arbitrarily shaped cross section. The beam is subjected to a compressive centrally applied concentrated axial load together with arbitrarily axial, transverse and torsional distributed loading, while its edges are restrained by the most general linear boundary conditions. The resulting boundary value problem, described by three coupled ordinary differential equations, is solved employing a boundary integral equation approach. All basic equations are formulated with respect to the principal shear axes coordinate system, which does not coincide with the principal bending one in a nonsymmetric cross section. To account for shear deformations, the concept of shear deformation coefficients is used. Six coupled boundary value problems are formulated with respect to the transverse displacements, to the angle of twist, to the primary warping function and to two stress functions and solved using the Analog Equation Method, a BEM based method. Several beams are analysed to illustrate the method and demonstrate its efficiency and wherever possible its accuracy. The range of applicability of the thin-walled theory and the significant influence of the boundary conditions and the shear deformation effect on the buckling load are investigated through examples with great practical interest.

Simple methods are developed to predict temperatures of a satellite box during launch stage. The box is mounted on outer surface of satellite and directly exposed to space thermal environment for the time period from fairing jettison to separation. These simple methods are to solve a 1st order ordinary differential equation (ODE) which is simplified from the governing equation after applying several assumptions. The existence of analytical solution for the 1st order ODE is determined depending on treatment of time-dependent molecular heating term. Even for the case that the analytical solution is not available due to the time dependent term, the 1st order ODE can be solved by relatively simple numerical techniques. The temperature difference between two different approaches (analytical and numerical solutions) is relatively small (Jess than $1^{\circ}C$ along the time line) when they are applied to STSAT-I launch scenario. The present methods can be generally used as tools to quickly check whether a satellite box is safe against space environment during the launch stage for the case that the detailed thermal analysis is not available.

The removal of nitrogen oxides(NOx) from $N_{2}/O_{2}$ gas using a pulsed corona discharge was investigated as a function of the reduced electric field(E/N) and the energy density(J/L). A kinetic model was developed to characterize the chemical reactions taking place in a pulsed corona discharge reactor. The model calculates the fractional concentrations of radical species at each pulse-on period and utilizes the radicals to remove NOx for the subsequent pulse-off period. Electron collision reaction data are calculated using ELENDIF program to solve Boltzmann equation for electron energy distribution function, and the subsequent chemical reactions are calculated using CHEMKIN-II program to solve stiff ODE(ordinary differential equation) problems for species concentrations. The corona discharge energy per pulse and the time-space averaged E/N were obtained by fitting the model to experimental data. The model calculation shows good agreement with the experimental data, and predicts the formation of other species such as $NO_{2}$, $O_{3}$ and $N_{2}O$.
Analytical solutions are developed to predict temperature of a satellite box during launch stage under the assumption of worst hot condition. The considered time period is from fairing jettison to separation of satellite during launch stage. After fairing jettison, a box mounted on outer surface of satellite are exposed to space environments such as direct solar flux, Earth IR, Albedo, and free molecular heating. The thermal governing equation is simplified to 1st order ordinary differential equation such that analytic solutions are acquired after the box is assumed as a single lumped mass. The analytical solutions are also available for mass varying box. Finally, the practical application is performed for the case of STSAT-1 launch scenario.

This paper deals with buckling loads of the column with the constant surface area. The shape function of variable column depth is chosen as the linear taper. The ordinary differential equation governing buckled shapes of the column is derived based on the dynamic equilibrium equation of such column subjected to an axial load. Three kinds of end constraint of hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped and clamped-clamped are considered in numerical examples. Effects of the column parameters on buckling loads are extensively discussed. Especially, section ratios of the strongest column are calculated, under which the maximum, i.e. strongest, buckling loads are achieved. Also the buckled shapes are obtained for searching the nodal points where the inner transverse supports are simply installed to increase the buckling loads.
A method is developed for the separation of the major base flow in a river hydrograph combining the numerical techniques and the empirical methods. The linearized Boussinesq equation and the storage function are used to obtain the base flow recession. The shape of base flow curve made by the recharge of the groundwater table aquifer resulting from rainfall in determined by the Singh and Stall's graphical method, and the continuous from for the curve is approximated by the multiple and polynomial regression. this procedure was successfully tested for the separation of base flow and the establishment of hydrograph in a natural watershed. It was found that the direct numerical method applied to the homogeneous linear second order ordinary differential equation system is not suited to obtain the recession curve, and the case that the loss is generated in the partially penetrating stream can not be solved by the method of this study.

Analytic solutions are derived for wave scattering by a semi-infinite breakwater or a breakwater gap with partially reflective front and fully reflective back. The water depth is constant and a regular wave train is normally incident to the breakwater. Wave scattering is studied based on the linear potential wave theory. The governing equation is transformed into ordinary differential equation by using the method of variation of parameters and coordinate transformation. Comparison with finite element numerical solution shows that the analytic solution obtained in this paper gives quite good results. Using the analytic solution, the tranquility of harbor entrance is investigated by changing the reflection coefficient at the breakwater.

A steady transonic dilute premixed combustion in a diverging channel is investigated by using asymptotic analysis. This model explores the nonlinear interactions between the near-sonic speed of the flow, the small changes in geometry from a straight channel, and the small heat release due to the one-step first-order Arrhenius chemical reaction. The reactive flow is described by a nonhomogeneous transonic small-disturbance (TSD) equation coupled with an ordinary differential equation for the calculation of the reactant mass fraction in the combustible gas. Also the asymptotic analysis reveals the similarity parameters that govern the reacting flow problem. The results show the complicated nonlinear interaction between the convection, reaction, and geometry effects and its effect on the flow behavior.

Investigated was the effect of propene(C3H6) on the NO-NO2 conversion in dry exhaust gases from lean burn engine using a pulsed corona discharge. A kinetic model was developed to characterize the plasma chemistry in simulated exhausts containing propene. The model uses ELENDIF program to solve Boltzmann equation for electron energy distribution function, and CHEMKIN-II program to solve stiff ODE(ordinary differential equation) problems for species concentrations. The corona discharge energy per pulse and the time-space averaged E/N were obtained by fitting the model to experimental data. The model calculation shows good agreement for NO and NO2 concentrations with the experimental data, and predicts the formation of byproducts such as CH2O, CH3HCO, CO AND CH3NO2 Propene enhances the NOx conversion enormously at lower energy density and the NOx conversion increases with the increase of initial propene and oxygen concentration, and temperature.

Vibration analysis of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is very essential field owing to their many promising applications in tiny instruments. In current study, the Eringen's nonlocal elasticity theory with clamped-clamped and clamped-free end conditions is utilized for the vibration analysis of armchair and zigzag SWCNTs. The Fourier method is utilized to solve the ordinary differential equation. The motion equation for this system is developed using a novel wave propagation method. Complex exponential functions have been used and the axial model depends on BCs that has been described at the edges of CNTs. The behavior of different nonlocal parameters is considered to find the vibrational frequency of SWCNTs. It is exhibited that the effect of frequencies against aspect ratio by varying the bending rigidity. It has been investigated that by increasing the nonlocal parameter decreases the frequencies and on increasing the aspect ratio increases the frequencies for both the tubes. To generate the fundamental natural frequencies of SWCNTs, computer software MATLAB engaged. The numerical results are validated with existing open text. Since the percentage of error is negligible, the model has been concluded as valid.
